FROM THE DRIVERS SEAT What a difference a week can make –one day we are living normally in level one and overnight we are back at level 2. It just goes to show that you cannot take this virus for granted. I hope that everyone is taking all precautions – including to sign in and out when you are at the club rooms plus regularly using the sanitizer. At this stage we will continue to proceed with branch events as planned and advise you via email and phone if this changes. Due to the move back to level 2, the ensuring uncertainty at the time as to how long we would be at that level, both here in Dunedin and in the North Island, I made the decision not to attend the national AGM. I had been looking forward to catching up with the other delegates and club members however not in this current environment. Marion has a copy of all the reports which she can email out if you would like to read them. At the July club night Bob Woodford gave an informative talk based on when he worked at Robinson’s second hand store (not sure if this is the exact name) in Stuart Street. It was interesting to hear of the “characters” that used to frequent the shop wanting to pawn items for cash plus the different shops that were in the area some of which I remember still being there in the 70’s and 80’s. Planning for the Taieri Tour is well underway and due to a prior booking the Wingatui Hall is not available this year so there will be a new venue for the drivers briefing and morning tea – details will be on the entry form. As there may be limited parking on Forbury Road due to the installation of the roundabout we are also looking at an alternative venue for the dinner and prizegiving. Take care and safe travels. Branch Overnight Run A few of us have been looking at the possibility of doing another Overnight Run in March 2021 over Anniversary weekend around South Otago and Southland - please let Kevin Mason or any committee member know if you are interested in a 1-2 night overnight run with visits to a selection of places over that time —so planning can start. 7

COVID 19 UPDATE - As we return to Level 2 of the Covid 19 pandemic – we still need to be mindful of our own health and safety as well as everyone else’s. So please remember to stay at home if you are unwell. Speak up and get checked if you get symptoms of the virus that you would not normally have. WHEN VISITING OUR CLUBROOMS – REMEMBER TO PUT YOUR NAME ON THE REGISTER AND SANITISE YOUR HANDS – AVOID TOUCHING AND SHARING MULTIPLE SURFACES WHILE YOU ARE THERE. CLUB NIGHT – TECH TALKS Thank you to Bob Woodford who gave a very interesting talk about the business’s based on Lower Stuart Street during the time he worked there. He recalled how busy the street was especially with the number of adults and school children who would be catching the train to and from their place of work, school and home. Many of those present enjoyed this trip down memory lane There will be one more Tech Talk at the end of September. We will take a break then until next year in Autumn when our rallying slows down a bit. TAIERI TOUR Kevin and Travis have started planning our Main Rally for the year. The Taieri Tour. Entry forms are elsewhere in this Roadrunner. Due to the roadworks that is planned around the clubrooms at that time we have had to find another venue for the Prizegiving dinner. We have booked the Forbury Raceway Restaurant for a buffet meal. If Lockdown levels increase we may need to revisit this. But will keep you updated with any changes. MARSHALLS NEEDED – as in previous years if you able to assist with marshalling please let the organisers know as soon as possible. Your help will help with the success of this rally. GARAGE RAIDS There have been mutterings of the possibility of members doing some garage raids. These can only happen if members are willing to open their sheds to allow members to come along and see what you have in your shed, and what projects you are working on. Please talk to a committee member if you would be happy to open up your shed or work room. Suggestions or ideas for Activities for the ladies would also be appreciated. 9
VIC Applications – please note - VIC Application forms have been updated - again. When completing these forms please ensure that you have the most up to date form titled Sept 2019 – Check the VCC website. – These continue to be updated as procedures change etc. Spare Parts Shed – is usually open every Wednesday morning, and Friday evenings when the clubrooms are open. Reminder – see if you can effectively recycle your parts before scrapping them. NO TYRES by request. The nearest AED defibrillator to the clubrooms is on the outside wall of the 4 Square shop on corner of Bayview Road. Please make a point of familiarising yourself of its location – Never know when it might be needed. The VCC of NZ Otago Branch Inc invites members to join us for our major event of the year, the Annual Taieri Tour. Get prepared for some good vintage motoring in the Taieri area with a picnic lunch stop. Bring your own lunch and hot drinks. Hot Water will be available at lunch venue. We welcome you to take part in this friendly, informal, family event. NB Getting to Forbury Raceway – From Clubrooms drive east towards the beach- turn Left at crossroads onto Victoria Road. Follow VCC signs as you come to Forbury Raceway on your left.
TOUR FORMAT: 9.30 am Assemble at Forbury Raceway - Collect Rally Packs and Morning tea 10.00 am Driver briefing 10.15 am First car away 12.30–2 approx Lunch - Hot water available 2.00 approx after field tests - You are free to motor back to your accommodation / Forbury Raceway at your leasure. 4.30 pm Drinks available at the bar 5.30 pm Dinner and Prizegiving will be held at Forbury Raceway. ELIGIBILITY: The Tour is open to all VCC of NZ eligible vehicles and will be divided into the following classes: Veteran, Vintage, PV, PW, P60, P80 Motorcycles. Includes commercials and motorcycles over all classes. All entrants must be financial members of the VCC of NZ. TROPHIES: A Trophy cup will be presented to the overall winner of the Tour. Trophies and Certificates will be awarded in each class. As I write this short update our largest city is currently in Level 3 lockdown, while the rest of us are abiding to Level 2 rules. A bit of a cliché I know, but we really are living in uneasy times and all trying our best to stay upbeat and project calm, without having any idea from one day to the next what the outlook is going to bring us. In the meantime, with trepidation we must all remain positive, and carry on as best we can with the planning of our future motoring events. Therefore, the organisers of the Highland Fling Rally have great pleasure in confirming to you the Highland Fling Rally is scheduled and booked in the VCC ‘Calendar of Events’ to take place Anzac Weekend 2021! My joint ‘Organiser Extraordinaire’ Alastair Jones sends this very positive message to you all. …”It has been most heartening to receive such a large number of emails and phone-calls of encouragement urging us not to give up on running “Highland Fling,” and many of our erstwhile entrants even asked to leave their monies with us until next year. No doubt this was to ensure they had a place in the “Fling” There was even quite a number who asked whether it was possible to reschedule it to later 2020, since the thought of having to wait until 2021 was a bit much to bear. On that note we didn’t consider it possible to fit it into an already jam-packed motoring event calendar, and as well late Autumn delivers superb colours, which are bound to captivate the considerable number of the ‘tender gender’ who have indicated they will be attending. All this preamble is to assure you it will be Anzac Weekend in 2021 even if we only have NZ entrants. Inevitably this dreaded virus has had an effect in a small way on our accommodation providers in Taihape as one of the smaller providers has been bought by the Government, for emergency housing, and Taihape Motels has been sold by Con (the Greek) who was such a good supporter of car club users, but alas to no avail the new owner is keen for a booked out weekend! There was an initial concern that lack of business at our Saturday lunch-stop bought about by canned tourism might cause them to shut-up shop, however, they seem to be made of back -country “hardiness” and are hanging right on in there. On that, not all who would have been involved this year have been told we will be back at the same time next year and keener than ever because of having to wait. With the long wait through “lockdown” I am sure your time will have been well spent in going over your vehicles which will eliminate all involuntary stops” ... So, there you have it folks, watch this space, because we will be endeavouring to do our very best to make sure this event happen is going to happen. By the end of September, you will receive the Entry Form and another Newsletter. And for those members who were as keen as mustard last time to be sporting the new exclusive Highland Fling apparel, (caps and polo shirts,) I will include with the Entry Form a separate order form with the ordering details etc. In the meantime, please look after yourself and your loved ones, and most importantly, stay healthy. Part IV What I did in the Lockdown (by Trevor Kempton, continued from August Roadrunner) Bugger, back to level 2! The GT380 is now in about a zillion less six pieces as assembly commenced during the month. The C-ring and the fork seals have reappeared and have been put carefully in another place I hope I am more likely to remember. No reason to start assembly now but it is good for morale and the frame is not a bad place to store things which otherwise will likely get knocked around. This is where you must try to remember the order in which you dis-assembled so that you don’t have to take something off again to tighten a bolt in behind it. I find that just approaching a resprayed component with a tool in my hand seems to chip the paint so the fewer times the better! What have I learned during the month? The steering stem is supported by two ball race sets. Disassembling a set which has not been greased in 45 years is normally followed by the vacuum cleaner to pick up the balls off the floor. Stepping on one in thin slippers or bare feet can be an eye watering experience! Replacement is normally with a set of tapered roller bearings. The top required 25mm ID and the bottom 27mm ID to fit a step at the base of the stem. Unfortunately, 27mm standard bearings don’t exist. I asked the man who machined the stem to take a 25mm at the bottom why we have different IDs when the ODs are the same? He convincingly explained the number of machining and assembly steps which were saved in manufacture and assembly by doing it that way. I was impressed! Until recently I have only been aware of two uses for toilet roll centres. One is just that and the other is to make a set of binoculars for a three-year-old. Well, with all the panic buying and, I presume, increased use of toilet paper during lock down there is no shortage. So I am saving the planet and having learned the hard way, wrapping my newly painted frame with them much to the amusement of Carol. Still feeling good about the project but about to start motor assembly…………… Trevor Kempton

Roads will be approx. 50/50 sealed and shingle. For those that prefer no, or very little shingle, then an alternative all sealed route is available Accommodation will be the entrants choice and responsibility. We have been advised that over the next few months the Council and Fulton will be doing realignment work on For bury Road at the Bayview Road Corner. Parking for cars will be at a premium. Access to the clubrooms may be limited at certain times – so please be aware of this and plan to park a little fur ther away. There is also a back entrance to the club grounds off Bayview Road – Please be patient with the workers and the work that is being done, and be kind to everyone as work through any challenges that this might bring.
