In the Driving Seat Hope everyone has been enjoying the autumnal weather we have been having. Mark and I took the opportunity for a road trip between Easter and Anzac Day and travelled up the West Coast and back down the east. We usually travel north to south down the coast so travelling up the coast to Blenheim was interesting in that you get a different perspective. Having fantastic clear skies was also a bonus. It was also the first opportunity to come down the Kaikoura Coast since the earthquakes. Fantastic engineering has been installed to protect the road. While in Blenheim we took the opportunity to visit the Marlborough branch and join their weekly meeting. Thank you to Rob and the members for their hospitality. Coming up in June is our AGM and I would really encourage you to consider standing for the committee especially as there will be some vacancies. Being on the committee is a great way to give back to the branch and help lead it in the coming years. Please feel free to contact any of the committee for further information. May is the annual restoration rally with the judging for the annual restoration of the year award prior to the start. Entry forms for both are in the Road Runner or from Marion. If you just lift your valve and shout out a question, he will probably tell to go on. He will do this if he is too proud or too courteous, but in ninety- nine cases out of a hundred he would really prefer you to stop, and if he doesn't actually need help or a spare part, he will be jolly glad to have a chat while he is labouring. Also, his trouble will very likely prove to be instructive, and his treatment of it may help you in a similar situation someday. So, what's new? TOUR
YEARS 4th- 6th November 2022
Important Notice to All VCC members This year, 2022 is the 50th Anniversary of the Otago Branch Taieri Tour. Over the past years many events have been cancelled, postponed or curtailed due to the Covid pandemic. It is our intention that the 50th Taieri Tour will not suffer the same fate. Celebrations will follow similar lines to the original event. This will be a three-day event beginning on Friday 4th November with registration and a get together. Saturday 5th November, will be on the lines of a midmorning tour with a lunch (probably BYO) followed by field events. Saturday night a big dinner with a little light entertainment is under planning with catering for around 100 or more places. Sunday 6th November will have a light morning tea at the Otago Branch VCC clubrooms with the parts shed open. There may even be a small-localised tour of some sort as well. Costing is under way and we hope to be able to have more definite figures around August. However, the dates are definite so all you out of town types, especially if you were on the first Taieri Tour, can book accommodation now. This could be our first big opportunity to get some real life back into the Vintage and Classic car movement so get planning and get ready. Travis Michelle, Rally Organiser 8

2022 VCC National Day On Sunday 21 August 2022 NEWSLETTER #1
Although August may seem a way off, we are eagerly anticipating that hundreds of vehicles on that day will either be on the road ‘driving our history’, or on display increasing the profile and awareness of the VCC and most importantly promoting your Branch. We’ll be raising money once again for our nominated charity, the NZ Cancer Society. The 2022 campaign is shaping up to be a winner so ‘Save the date’. Otago Branch plan to join with South Otago Branch with a run finishing at Wingatui Racecourse for a public display.
Thursday Mid-Week Run A small number of us ventured over to Waihola Domain for a picnic afternoon tea on Thursday 24th of March. Nova presented the ladies with a crocheted poppy to pin on to our tops at the start. When we got to Waihola she showed us how easy it is to create a lovely crocheted flower with stem and leaves. We spent a good few hours in the sun, enjoying each others’ company. The temperature was pleasant and could have encouraged a BBQ tea! Maybe we could have a session for the ladies with Nova to show more of us her crochet skills! Marion 9
National Veteran Rally /70th Dunedin Brighton Run 2024 Our branch will be hosting the National Veteran Rally in combination with the 70th Dunedin Brighton Run in 2024.
This will potentially be a big event – Colin Winter and his team will be looking for members to assist on the organising committee and during the event. He would be grateful for as much assistance as possible. MANY HANDS MAKE LIGHT WORK. And working with a team like this is always a lot of fun and gives everyone the opportunity to get to know one other better.

Change of Address/phone number/email address - Contact National Office directly to advise these changes! Name Badges - If you do not yet have one please contact David Ross – treasurer to order one. They are $10 each and good to wear when attending events. We have a number of new members and it can be difficult for everyone trying to identify and remember who you are. Club events - as you will all be aware there have been a lot of events postponed, changed or cancelled. This will be a continuing issue in the months ahead. As changes come about I will endeavour to advise you via emails. Tech Talks – Last Friday of the Month Club Nights ––Thanks to those who have offered their time and resources to give presentations during these club nights over the year ahead. We are always looking for more interesting speakers. Please get in touch with a committee member if you have any contacts. BRANCH NEWSLETTERS: - newsletters on the Club Website should now be up to date. ENTRY FORMS FOR OTHER BRANCH EVENTS These can be accessed via the branch newsletters on the VCC website. Or there should be a copy in the clubrooms or contact me for a copy. Entries usually close within two weeks of the event. NNB: Please if you are planning to enter a local event, and running late with entry forms, please contact the organizer by phone or email to let them know you are coming. They need to know numbers for printing the instructions, and catering purposes for some events. SPARE PARTS SHED: – Parts shed is usually open every Wednesday morning, and Friday evenings when the clubrooms are open. Reminder – see if you can effectively recycle your parts before scrapping them. NO TYREs by request.

ARE PRESENT BEFORE FORWARDING TO YOUR BRANCH VEHICLE REGISTRAR – It gets very time consuming when we need to contact you time and again to ensure everything is sorted. THE VIC CARD BELONGS TO THE VCC AND MUST STAY WITH THE CAR! CHANGED VEHICLE OWNERSHIP - SOLD OR SELLING YOUR VIC’D VCC VEHICLE – YOU NEED TO ADVISE NATIONAL OFFICE!!! ENSURE YOU SEND YOUR VIC CARD ALONG WITH CHANGE OF OWNERSHIP DETAILS – There is a form that needs to be completed for this (available from Branch Secretary or on the VCC website) VIC information is the property of the National Club – this is their way of keeping records of Vehicle ownership etc.

Garage Raid: 9th April Report
From the “Garage Raiders” to the “Garage Owners” - Thank you to Stu and Lyn, Malcolm and Alison, Colin and Judy for opening your garage doors and houses to view the great displays. It was much appreciated by the twenty raiders. Leaving the club rooms at 10.15am and heading down the harbour to Sawyers Bay, no traffic stops, we were able to check out the cycle/ walkway trail on the way. Stu and Lyn both had displays of many things they have collected over the years at swap meets and the like. It was then back to the clubrooms for lunch and a cuppa, where Rob F produced the scone with jam he had acquired on the previous Wednesday morning (he must have taken the advice of putting it in the freezer until he needed it!). After lunch it was off to Malcolm and Alison’s place on Highcliff Road to view their Holden and Rally car memorabilia, plus other goodies. From there we went down the road to Colin and Judy’s place where we got to see a nice collection which included a miniature steam engine working after a natter and a welcome afternoon tea. We also got see ‘Grandma’ being started! This ended what appeared to be a successful day for everyone who attended. Kevin Mason

Otago Rally: 9th April Report
Despite the fact that there was another event happening at the same time with the Otago Branch, we managed to get the 6 members requested for Road Block Marshalling during this years Otago Rally. Our branch has assisted with Road Block marshalling for many years now and we manage to get members who are interested in the sport to come along and marshal at various points as requested, on several stages. This year Steven Wesselingh, Graeme Duthie and I went out to Loop Road of the Palmerston /Dunback Road – and were entertained by the members of the public trying to get a park as close as possible to the course. They had to park back a bit and across a river bed. This needed to be crossed in order to reach the course. Some thought to bring their gumboots others not so. One guy took passengers across the water several times before parking up himself, and then there were the ones who managed to get a piggy back ride across. The rest well they got wet feet! It was a pleasant 3 hours as we ensured that the public kept off the course, while they tried to find the perfect vantage points. The perfect spots were also where they caught all the dust as the cars sped past. So, a lot of dusty people at departure time. Most had left the course when the 3rd to last car that came through provided the best entertainment and a moment of breath holding – as it rode up the bank and almost tipped over! – thankfully he righted the car in the nick of time. John Dow and two of his friends travelled over to Shag Valley Back Road for their Marshalling duties, where a good number of spectators were also expected. Not sure how his team got on, but assume they did not have too many issues either. Thanks to you all for coming out and assisting with marshalling. This is always a good fundraiser for our branch. Gerald Lynch-Blosse Memorial Rally
On Sat 9th of this month seven of our two wheeler boys trailered the bikes to Oamaru, a chilly morning but out came the sun and after the normal morning tea and riders briefing from Robert, it was away at intervals as the timed section was from the start. I'm sure many couldn't care less as many departed in groups. Entries from Christchurch, Ashburton, Timaru, Invercargill and Alexandra totalled 40 - a number the organisers were really pleased with. The roads inland from Oamaru are just the best for motorcycling whether old or new machines, and the temperatures rose as we headed inland for the lunch stop at Duntroon. With plenty of time to inspect the bikes and taking lunch it was a non-competitive ride back by a different route to even more food we didn't need, I'm sure. Robert announced the section winners, I don't think any of our seven were among them, but who cares! A great rally and a catch up with folk we haven't seen for some time.
