2022 Reflecting back over the past 12 months it is pleasing to see how the branch has continued to carry on even with Covid 19 being continually on our doorstep. We may have needed to cancel some events during and following the second lockdown however for the main we have managed to proceed and adapt accordingly. Club Captain Kevin Mason has continued to plan exciting events for the branch, in particular another successful garage raid, the day trip to Roxburgh and the monthly weekday runs for both cars and bikes. The Wednesday group is also growing in numbers and I know a number of you look forward to this weekly gathering. One of the highlights for the year was the launch of the branch history “Our 60 Glorious Years” held during the annual dinner. It was great looking around the room seeing members with their noses in the book – possibly the quietest annual dinner for some time. The majority of branch members have now received their copy plus we have received interest from past members, families and the wider public. At the 2015 National AGM the club approved a strategic plan to help ensure that we as a club can continue to survive and remain relevant in the future. This includes governance, communication, member recruitment and publicity. Like all plans these needs to be reviewed, adapted or changed which is now on the agenda for the next National Executive meeting. Part of the plan was to review the club branding so during the year we held a robust discussion on the proposed changes to the branch logo. I would like to thank members who took the opportunity to attend both presentations prior to both National Executive meetings. This confirms that you have a strong interest in the governance of the Vintage Car Club and also gives me as your delegate a strong mandate of how to vote when required. The amendments to the Incorporated Societies Act finally came into law in April. Until October 2023 we remain subject to the rules in the 1908 Act however at some point between October 2023 and April 2026, we must re-register with the Companies Office or we will cease to exist as an incorporated society. There are a number of changes within the new Act which we will need to incorporate within the updated constitution however we have time on our side to work through this. As an example, part of the changes to the constitution will be around the election of committee members and also dispute resolution. The National Management Committee are reviewing the Act and will come out with their recommendations on how to proceed so this is mainly a heads up to be aware that there will be changes that need to be made. I envisage that part of the recommendations would be a suggested template for the constitution for all branches to adopt. Continuing as branch chairman over the past 12 months would not be possible without the help and support of family and in particular Mark and secondly the committee. I would also like to personally thank the current committee for the work they have put in over the past year – you have been a great team to work with and I know each and every one of you want the best for our branch. Chairman’s Report 2022 continued To the members working outside of the committee, either helping around the club rooms, bar, parts shed, library, branch BBQ, or anything else that arises for the betterment of the branch, I would like to thank you for the valuable work you do. Looking forward to the coming 12 months we have the 50th Dunvegan Rally which was postponed from last year and the 50th Taieri Tour. At the start of 2024 we are hosting the National Veteran Rally in conjunction with the 70th Dunedin to Brighton Veteran Rally and I would encourage you all to support the organisers for all of these events to ensure their success In closing I want to thank you again all for your support and encouragement over the past 6 years. Vehicles wanted for a Movie set in 1929 I've been asked if I know of any cars in the Dunedin area suitable for a movie set in 1929, gangland USA. The shooting (ie cameras, not guns!) will be later this year in Dunedin. Being set in the US we need LHD cars - but RHD is good for vehicles in background scenes or parked in streets. If so, please would you send me a current pic of the car that I can forward to the director. We have a number of new members and it can be difficult for everyone trying to identify and remember who you are. Club events - as you will all be aware there have been a lot of events postponed, changed or cancelled. This will be a continuing issue in the months ahead. As changes come about I will endeavour to advise you via emails. Tech Talks – Last Friday of the Month Club Nights - Thanks to those who have offered their time and resources to give presentations during these club nights over the year ahead. We are always looking for more interesting speakers. Please get in touch with a committee member if you have any contacts. BRANCH NEWSLETTERS: - newsletters on the Club Website should now be up to date. To access other branch newsletters, go to www.vcc.org.nz scroll to News from our Branches, as hard copy newsletters are not mailed out now. ENTRY FORMS FOR OTHER BRANCH EVENTS These can be accessed via the branch newsletters on the VCC website. Or there should be a copy in the clubrooms or contact me for a copy. Entries usually close within two weeks of the event. NNB: Please if you are planning to enter a local event, and running late with entry forms, please contact the organizer by phone or email to let them know you are coming. They need to know numbers for printing the instructions, and catering purposes for some events. SPARE PARTS SHED: – Parts shed is usually open every Wednesday morning, and Friday evenings when the clubrooms are open. Reminder – see if you can effectively recycle your parts before scrapping them. NO TYREs by request. Vero Insurance Scheme - Just a reminder, the VCC Vero insurance scheme is set up for those with current VCC membership. If you become unfinancial you will no longer receive discounted insurance premiums.

Thursday Mid week Run: 26 May On Thursday 26th of May a good number of our members took a drive north to Waikouaiti, for afternoon tea at the Café, then some of us a look around the 2nd hand shops there. They could almost be called Museums with the age of most of the items in them! 11
Branch AGM report We had a reasonable turnout of members to our Pot Luck Lunch and AGM on Sunday 19th June. We welcome Mark Wilkinson on board as Branch Chairman for the coming year, and Nicola will remain on Committee as Immediate Past Chairman for the year. Also, we farewelled Ken Pledger who has served 4 years on committee and thank him for the work he has done during this time. We know that he will continue to support the team of workers at the clubrooms on Wednesday mornings or whenever needed. We welcome on board as a committee member Ross McTaggart, and look forward to being able to work with him. Bill Partel is also standing down as Vehicle Registrar for VIC compliancing. If there is another person who would be able to do this please let a committee member know. Thanks goes out to all the other members of our branch who work in the back ground to ensure that everything runs smoothly at the clubrooms and also as a branch.

2022 GRAHAM DALTON CUP -MOTORCYLE RESTORATION OF THE YEAR 1952 Comet Motorcycle - Owned by Bill Veitch History - was imported from the UK with a family who immigrated in the 1970’s It was the father’s ride to work bike back home. The son used it here for a time until the gearbox gave problems then parked it. Condition - Complete but in rough condition. The gearbox partially dismantled. Fortunately, the registration had been kept on hold for over 20 years. Vehicle components - All main components are original. The machine has been completely dismantled and rebuilt with a considerable amount of new parts still available in the UK and Australia. Wheel rims, spokes, guards, and some engine parts Restoration - The dual seat had been recovered previously. All work by the owner, apart from paint. A problem with a stripped exhaust flange thread required professional machining by outside engineers.
2022 RESTORATION CUP CAR RESTORATION OF THE YEAR 1930 Model A – Owned by Travis Michelle History - Purchased the car 12 years ago from Trevor Magon at Otakia near Momona. Condition - The car was stripped and rebuilt by the owner and son Brian all assisted by Rod Flocton. Vehicle components - Many reproduction body parts were imported. LeBoney upholstery kit was imported and installed by A1 Auto Upholsterers. Restoration -Engine was overhauled by R McCulloch of Invercargill. Painting completed by G Axe of Outram.

Newsletter Number 3
We have been busy. The short route for the day has been laid out. We have kept in mind fragile cars and similar drivers. This course is ideal for, but not restricted to, veteran cars. Over the next few months, we will revisit it and do some fine-tuning. The aim for this course is to have a good touring day. Most of the fiddly stuff is at the start and then you break out onto the Taieri for some good long stretches of motoring finishing up at the afternoon venue. As we say, it is for the cars that have minimal power and minimal braking piloted by drivers that are in the same category. When the 50th Brighton run occurred, there was a photo shoot of the cars that were there on the first day. We would like to have the same photo op for this event. If you own or know of the whereabouts of such cars, please ask the owners to turn up. It would be great to have as many of the old originals as possible on the day. The same could be applied to previous owners who were there on the first run. They may not drive now or own a car, but we would like to have some contact with them. Perhaps we may be able to get them together or arrange a ride in some of the present member’s motors. These things would add to the day and be great for the older people who were the backbone of the club in earlier days. Travis 15

mrdavidmills@gmail.com Newsletter Number 4 Things are now starting to fall into place. The three routes for the day are well in place. We just need one or two bits of fine tuning and keep an eye on them for any changes that may occur. Venues and the ‘get togethers’ are well into planning. The Friday night will have registration at the Dunedin Rugby Football Club on Moana Rua. Entry fee will be set at no more than $35. This is for your badge and administration as well there will be a light supper provided. The Sunday barbeque will be free but we have yet to finalise. The dinner on Saturday night is being prepared by Barbeque Bill at the Rugby club, and while it is a ‘little out there’ we have not confirmed the final cost yet. However, it involves three cooked meat choices, and three deserts. The whole weekend for two with a supper, dinner, two light morning teas and a lunch will cost less than $150 at this stage, which we think is not bad. This is the aim and we feel it should be possible. I have mentioned some figures here and they will be the top limit. We may be able to lower these yet. If people know of older VCC members who do not drive or cannot participate, perhaps consider bringing them to one of the functions. Just include them in your entry when you register. It would be nice to bring some of them out for this tour. As always, check with us if you have any worries.

TARGA SOUTH ISLAND 2022 TIME TRIAL DATE CHANGE 1. October Date Change: Many of you may already have received an email from Peter Martin last week advising of new dates for Targa events this October. In case you didn't, the new dates are: Friday 14th, Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th October 2022. Apologies to those who've already entered, made travel & accommodation bookings, and/or arranged leave from work, but this latest change was beyond our control. Hopefully there's sufficient notice for you to make alternative arrangements. I've contacted all 3 accommodation providers on the attached Itinerary/ Accommodation sheet, and they've all kindly agreed to transfer their discount codes to the new dates. (For those travelling from afar, we recommend that you get to Nelson by Thursday evening, 13th October, to be ready bright and early for Scrutineering etc which starts Friday morning 14th October at 8.30am. For those travelling from the North Island, I recommend that you check out ferry booking options for you and your car via the Cook Strait Crossings website asap). 2. Advertising and Promotion: Thanks hugely to all our primary advertisers: NZ Classic Car, NZ Classic Driver, Petrolhead and VCC Beaded Wheels who've pulled out all stops to ensure that this latest date change was able to be included in all current and future advertising. Quite a task, considering that in some cases we'd exceeded their print deadlines! However, they did it, and we very much appreciate their assistance. I've attached an example of updated advertising and request your assistance to use this to promote our event with new and corrected dates for October please.

In addition, look out for the latest July issue #379 of NZ Classic Car (available from this Monday 27th June), which features a brilliant article from managing editor Ian Parkes who was co-driver/navigator for John Corbett in John's stunning 1964 Jaguar E Type Series 1 FHC in our recent 5 day North Island event - Enjoy your read. (A future edition of NZ Classic Driver will also feature an article from Allan Horner, who along with Frank Karl, competed in Allan's nifty 1963 Austin Healey Sprite, so look out for that one too). 3. Targa Website Update: Special thanks also to Targa GM Victoria Main, who just today has created an exclusive VCC tab on the Targa website for us to share essential information for our events. I've been working with Vicki to provide time trial content etc, which is now live, so check it out - Top right of the menu selection on the Targa website, between "Seria Campione Documents" and "FAQ". Having just one point of reference will ensure that essential VCC time trial info is easily accessible, along with simplifying my event administration. Hopefully you find it useful, and in future newsletters I'll alert you to content updates. 4. October "Top of the South" Event and Awards: In addition to most of our current awards, we're introducing two new award categories to engender some inter car make and inter VCC branch competition: 4.1 Inter car make award: For the top 3 placed cars of the same make, (not necessarily the same model), based on least timing demerit points achieved. 4.2 Inter VCC branch award: For the top 3 placed cars entered by drivers from the same VCC branch, again based on least timing demerit points achieved. So come on now - Here's your chance to extend the invitation to like minded car owners and branch members to join us for some friendly rivalry! Hopefully we'll see teams of Alfas, Bentleys & Rolls Royces, BMWs, Citroens, Fords, Healeys, Holdens, Jags, Mazdas, Mercs, MGs, Renault, Triumphs and everything in between join us, along with strong representations from as many VCC branches as possible! Here's our challenge: We're hoping to exceed 40 entries for October (50 would be even better), so please spread the word to friends and colleagues. (We've already got 18 - 20 entries, so there's plenty of room for more). 5. May 2022 North Island 5 Day and 2 Day Time Trials: Thanks to all those who attended and contributed to the success of these two outstanding events. How lucky were we with the weather?!! Starting from Monday afternoon with scrutineering at the Holden Museum through to Sunday evening in Havelock North - Fine, fine, fine! For enduring memories, check out Proshotz website for some amazing photos of the cars on-event, especially those stunning shots on Day 3 with Mt Egmont/Mt Taranaki in the background! You can also select, order and pay for these via that link to the Proshotz website. An unexpected bonus for this brilliant May event was "Suck and Pluck" (Jeff Sewell and Paul Newton in MGB #34), who provided outstanding entertainment at our VCC dinner on Saturday evening, along with impromptu roadside performances. Thanks guys - Your enthusiasm and expertise was enjoyed hugely!

6. May 2022 North Island Awards: Congratulations again to all our 5 and 2 day time trial award recipients. (Please refer to the full list attached). 7. Next: Having almost recovered from a serious bout of flu, Anne and I'll be back on the road to New Plymouth early July to visit Mum in her new rest home. We'll then return to Wanaka via Blenheim and Nelson to check out facilities/venues and meet with car clubs and VCC branch management in preparation for October. My next newsletter in July will also include reference to content updates on our wizzy new Targa website VCC tab. In the meantime, please help us by spreading the word to attract more entries. National Veteran Rally 2023 Friday 24 - Sunday 26 February Hosted by Auckland Branch Based in rural Franklin in Tuakau, 56km south of Metro Auckland
Registration open to all veteran vehicles manufactured before 31 Dec.1918 VIC required. The rally is based in the expansive grounds of LaValla Estate less than 2km from the historical small township of Tuakau. Tuakau is located in the district of Franklin. Franklin lies between State Highway 1 and the west coast and is known as the breadbasket of Auckland, growing potatoes, vegetables, and other products on its rich volcanic soils. The area offers great motoring country for veteran vehicles.
To reach Tuakau and LaValla, those coming from the south can leave the Waikato Expressway (SH1) at Pokeno, just south of the Bombay Hills. Those coming from the north exit the motorway at Bombay. The registration fee covers: ‘Meet & Greet’ breakfast; light refreshments at start and finish of each day’s run; three lunches; final banquet dinner; Movie Night (in the small cinema at LaValla); Rally Pack and plaque. Key Dates The event runs over the last weekend of February, the weekend following the Art Deco Festival in Napier. The rally commences on Friday morning with registration from 8.30 and breakfast and rally briefing from 9.00 to 10.00, ready to depart on the first day’s run at 10.30. The rally concludes with a celebratory dinner and awards on Sunday evening. Rally Headquarters The rally is based at LaValla. Registration, the first ‘Meet & Greet’ breakfast and the final dinner are held at LaValla. Each day’s run departs and finishes at LaValla with light refreshments. There will be ample opportunity to catch up with old friends and meet new friends in a beautiful, relaxing setting. ..continued 20
National Veteran Rally 2023 continued LaValla has an interesting history as a former Marist college, now in private ownership. It is less than 2km out of the township of Tuakau, made up of well-maintained and expansive grounds (109 acres) overlooking rural countryside. LaValla provides a secure site where veteran vehicles, modern cars and trailers can be safely parked for the duration. There is limited accommodation at LaValla, and more accommodation is also available at the nearby boutique Tuakau Hotel. Other options are the motels in Pukekohe and Pokeno. Rally Programme Franklin lies between State Highway 1 and the west coast, bounded to its south by the Waikato River. Built-up areas, busy roads and steep roads will be avoided. There are short and long routes each day. Day 1: The route uses roads criss-crossing the Bombay Hills including the old main roads before the motorway was opened. Day 2: The route crosses the Waikato River on the iconic Tuakau Bridge and follows the river to its mouth at Port Waikato. Day 3: The destination is the historical port town of Waiuku, taking in Glenbrook Vintage railway close by.

St Josephs Cathedral pupils Neil Hodgkin ended up being the only one who could supply a vehicle for St Josephs Cathedral pupils on 10th July. Others pulled out due to various reasons. Looks like the kids and Neil enjoyed the visit. Thank you Neil for taking the time to attend on a nice day as well.
