With Daylight Saving upon us, you know that we are in a busy season of club and branch events. While quite a number of larger activities have been cancelled due to the uncertainty through Covid, we have been lucky that we have been able to continue with the branch calendar. The most recent rally was the PWV/P60/P80 rally which went to Macrae’s Domain on a pictureperfect day. A report on this will be in the next Road Runner however in the meantime congratulations to Kevin Fowler (PWV) Mark (P60) and Kevin Mason (P80) for winning their respective categories. Coming up is the annual Dunvegan Rally during which Bob Woodford, on Friday night 2 October will be presented with his 50year badge. Congratulations Bob - this is a fantastic achievement. Following Dunvegan is the Taieri Tour, Commercial Veteran Rally and Xmas BBQ. Details as usual can be found in the Road Runner with a follow up reminder from Marion. Last year I set up a branch Facebook page which I use to showcase branch events that have either just been held or are upcoming. I am happy to receive photos etc. to upload onto the site and you can either email these to me or send directly to the page – Otago Vintage Car Club. The page has also been used by members of the public looking for particular cars, and to notify us of particular car parts etc. that could be of interest. Recently I was contacted by a young lady trying to locate a car that was rebuilt by her grandfather. She was trying to track down the current owner as she wanted to get a photo of her daughter in the car she remembered and had fond memories of when she was a girl and went on rallies with her grandparents. Luckily both Mark and I knew her grandfather when he was alive plus who bought the car. Within a couple of hours, I was able to put her in touch with the current owner and they are arranging to met up. A very happy outcome all around. Safe driving. Nicola 7
July Tech Talk Report from Bob Woodford Since my talk at the monthly meeting night in July I have been asked to give a summary of my topic ”The way it was”, the title came about after the start of the Otago rally stage start in the Octagon, a group of us adjourned to one of the many bars that along with coffee shops have changed the face of the lower Octagon and Stuart Street. My friend visiting for the week-end stated that the bar we were in was originally a second hand and hardware shop I disagreed and said it was a grocery shop, the second-hand shop [City Traders] was next door had a wider frontage and a stairway to the basement. Once out on the street sure enough it was as I describe it. I got to know this area very well as I got an after-school job at the age of 14 going on 15 - late night Friday and then the August and Christmas holidays. The shop I worked at was Robinson’s Trading Company [now Two Chefs] the company had a shop in Wellington and two in Auckland. I gave some previous history of the area in particular the P. Haymands fire [29th April 1952] this is to date the biggest fire our city has experienced. I told how the street was in the late 50s and 60s was the busiest street in Dunedin as it was the major thoroughfare from the railway station. The street had a great variety of retail shops and other businesses on the upper floors. Most of the retailers had been in the street before WW2 or just after. After I finished high school I was asked to come and work permanently at Robinsons. I enjoyed many of the aspects of the job, we were pawn brokers, buyers of gold, silver, antiques and portable merchandise. I spoke of some of the characters who were regulars at pawning items. We had a few remittance people mainly men but we did have two ladies. All the retailers in the street were very friendly and would greet each other every morning as you swept the footpath in front of your shop, even at an early stage of working in the street I got to know several of the police and recognise many of the lawyers on court days. After the Christmas rush was over Keith the manager would take his holidays and left me to manage the shop. Around me I had a great network of minders, several would call in for a chat but really they were checking to see if all was OK. During one of these holiday breaks I got a unexpected visit by a very dapper little gentleman who introduced himself as Horace Robinson, he knew I was on my own and had visited the Wellington manager the day before and decided to see this young guy in Dunedin. I later went and worked in the Auckland shops. On the 5th of February 1962 I got to the Stuart street shop and started with my normal routine, one job was to remove the metal security grills from the outside of the windows, only part way through I was on my way to lift in the last one in when a terrific explosion shook the shop, this was the parcel bomb that had been posted to James Ward a well-known and respected lawyer who had his office in the Security Building on the first floor, his office was on the corner Stuart St and Moray place. James Ward was admitted to hospital but died that afternoon. I knew all the staff in his office and up until four years ago would meet with his nephew for a drink occasionally. Who delivered the parcel to him. That murder is unsolved in police files. During my talk a number of those present had fond memories of the street, and remembered some of the shops, thanks for every-one who participated. Bob Woodford 8

CLUB NIGHT – TECH TALKS – Will start again in the New Year when our motoring events slow down. Newsletters for all New Zealand Branches All branch newsletters are available to read on the VCC website. I do get them all emailed to me each month, but I do not see the point of forwarding them on to everyone, when you know that they are available to see on the website. It is then up to you to chase them if you want to have a look at them. Entry forms and other relevant information from other branches will however still be forwarded on to you via email. Upcoming Events at other branches - Entry Forms If you would like a copy of entry forms for events that are happening elsewhere, there should be a copy in the clubrooms or contact me for a copy. I have a pile of different ones at the moment as we head into a busy few months of motoring. Entries usually close within two weeks of the event. Library Roster: We have had a few members pull out of the library Roster. If you can spare a few hours on a Friday evening every 5-6 weeks please let us know. Thanks VIC Applications – please note - VIC Application forms have been updated - again. When completing these forms please ensure that you have the most up to date form titled Sept 2019 – Check the VCC website. –These continue to be updated as procedures change etc. NNB: Please if you are planning to enter a local event, and running late with entry forms, please contact the organizer by phone or email to let them know you are coming. They need to know numbers for printing the instructions, and catering purposes for some events. Spare Parts Shed – Parts shed is usually open every Wednesday morning, and Friday evenings when the clubrooms are open. Reminder – see if you can effectively recycle your parts before scrapping them. NO TYREs by request. The nearest AED defibrillator to the clubrooms is on the outside wall of the 4 Square shop on corner of Bayview Road. Please make a point of familiarising yourself of its location – Never know when it might be needed. SOLD OR SELLING YOUR VIC’D VCC VEHICLE ENSURE YOU SEND VIC CARD ALONG WITH CHANGE OF OWNERSHIP DETAILS TO NATIONAL OFFICE – Remember this paperwork is the property of the National Club – this is their way of keeping records of Vehicle ownership etc. Vero Insurance Scheme - Just a reminder, the VCC Vero insurance scheme is set up for those with current VCC membership. ROADWORKS AROUND THE CLUBROOMS We have been advised that over the next few months the Council and Fulton Hogan will be doing realignment work on Forbury Road at the Bayview Road Corner. As a result parking for cars will be at a premium. Access to the clubrooms may be limited at certain times – so please be aware of this and plan to park a little further away. There is also a back entrance to the club grounds off Bayview Road – where parking may be a little easier. Please be patient with the workers and the work that is being done, and be kind to everyone as work through any challenges that this might brink. National Motorcycle Entry Form 2021 The entry form for the National Motorcycle Rally being held in the Wairarapa in March, 2021. Observations from an afternoon of Daffodil Deliveries for the Cancer Society Yes, Hi Marion. Just to say thanks for your effort organising our group to do this delivery, it was a very enjoyable experience. We had according to Charlotte, one of the bigger deliveries and according to Bryan about last to finish, at least we were out motoring and doing some good. At our first drop-off, I parked in the council car park just east of our start point, while waiting to find a gap this scruffy looking dude came up and said cool car mate. I replied thanks, he knew what it was, he did a 360 around the car and walked off, a few minutes later he found me and handed me a handful of coins, these are for the Daffodil Appeal. Before I could explain he was gone, how cool is that. At a drop-off in Bond Street Margaret came back to the car with two handsome young guys in tow - I said you are only supposed to drop off the flowers not pick up blokes. They enjoyed that and liked the car. It amazes me how the younger ones like those 80’s cars. I find it strange as it wasn’t that long ago that I was selling them as near new cars. We did enjoy the experience, it made you feel really humble and lucky, as we received many comments from the person that we left the flowers with at the firms, as to how they had family or friends affected by this terrible disease and how appreciative they were of the Cancer Society. THOUGHTS FROM OUR CLUB CAPTAIN KEVIN MASON Kevin has been pondering over a number of suggestions that have been coming his way from our members. Branch Overnight Run A few of us have been looking at the possibility of doing another Overnight Run : 21-23rd March 2021 (Anniversary weekend) around South Otago, Southland - please let Kevin Mason or committee know if you are interested in a 1-2 night overnight run with visits to a selection of places over that time. You will be responsible for arranging your own accommodation. Coast to Coast Run This idea has been tossed around for a few years now. Kevin would like to see this happen. The suggestion has been to do this in early June around the shortest day. More details on this to come.

TAIERI TOUR BADGES WANTED The committee is looking at putting together a display board of Taieri Tour Badges. As we are nearing the 40th Taieri Tour we feel it would be good opportunity to be able to do this. If any of you still happen to have any of the earlier badges and are happy to donate them to the branch they would be gratefully received. Any double ups will be returned. Would also be great to get a bit of back ground on the earlier ones. The badges over recent years have had a photo inserted in relation to the area on the Taieri that we would be visiting. Motorcycle Restoration of the Year - 2020: 1939 Norton International 490 Owned by Bill Veitch THE NORTON
Back in 2010 or thereabouts I did some mechanical repairs to this 1038/9 International Norton, and as it had previously been stored in a wet shed I offered to store it until better conditions were found even though it was already in a rather rough state. Some years went by and in 2016 the family who really had no interest in bikes, and certainly none for a rusty old bike that had been stripped to race many years ago wished to dispose of it. The timing was about right as I'd not long finished an Ariel so the purchase was made and on my shelves there was a shabby but correct headlamp including the also correct brackets plus enough parts to complete a generator. Spokes and English chrome rims were imported plus a number of engine parts to complete the rebuild of the single OHC motor, a time consuming job setting the bevel drives. Interestingly this engine design started life in 1931 and up until the mid 50's was virtually unchanged, The gearbox was sound and with a number of parts on my shelves a good gearbox and clutch were assembled. Sometime after WW2 the owner must had decided to fit a later model fuel tank, not great as it was totally unsuitable and too large for a pre- war model. Repro Indian made gas tanks don't have a great reputation but thought it was worth a try. Well it arrived looking quite good apart from the filler spout, I'm sure it had been rolled from a s/h tobacco tin. Not a big problem, machined a new filler ring and hinge. So from 2016 until early this year many hours were spent on the rebuild, the vin/ reg completed in Jan. Just 30 miles ridden before the lockdown and now with weather improving hopefully some more testing in the coming months. The original owner is unknown but a motorcycle club member in Dunedin was an entry at the NZ Grand Prix at Cust for two years 1951/2, he does not show in the placings. The next owner I knew well but I never saw it running from 1954 when I joined the OMCC. Sixty seven years this Norton has been hibernating in Dunedin, hopefully it will now do some mileage and give pleasure to future owners. Bill Veitch 14

GM NIGHT RALLY REPORT
This was held on Saturday 12th of September - starting from the clubrooms. Thanks to Ruth and Gil Edmunds for arranging the route and challenges for this. George and Marjorie Martin were their support crew, ensuring that the supper was organised and results out in good time. There was a good crowd of branch members and members of GM aligned groups including Vauxhall, Mini, Austin and Landrover. About 25 teams. We arrived with clipboards, pens and torches at the ready. After briefing we headed off with instructions to find information at points along the route. Heading into the Marina at the back of Forsyth Stadium, we had to record the names of the various clubs in the area – we didn’t realise how many rowing clubs are based out that way. With a long row of vehicles along the Marina, headlights on, we wonder if security was wondering what was going on there. Having managed to find the sculpture of the dog on the rail track – in pitch darkness – we finally made our way towards Port Chalmers. Still haven’t figured out what the word on the green container was! We headed up and over the Mount Cargill Road, some took the short piece of gravel on Green Road – which took us back towards Clava Road and down Norwood Street. (This street was used for hill climbs in the past). At the bottom we caught up with Stewart Hewson in his little Austin. He managed to navigate, find the clues and drive the route, keeping up the same speed as us. No hood. It was a cool calm clear night. The harbour was picture perfect with the cities lights reflected on its still water. From Forrester Park we made our way back to the clubrooms for a well earned supper and prizegiving. The crew in a Landrover won this years event. We Private Collection of all look forward to seeing Vintage Originals what challenges they can provide next year.
