The annual Dunvegan Rally was held at the beginning of October and from all account the entrants had a good weekend. Beaded Wheels Chairman Kevin Clarkson was in town and during the Friday night noggin and natter represented National President Dianne to present a 50-year membership badge and citation to Bob Woodford. 35-year membership badges were also presented to Max and Barry Dewar. Congratulations to all three members and thank you to everyone who turned up to support them. By the time you read this the National Veteran Rally held in Gore will have been held as well as the election. By all accounts the branch had a good representation at the National Veteran Rally. The South Canterbury Branch is in the early stages of planning for a National Vintage Rally to be held in 2021 – watch the magazine for details. We are in the lead up to Christmas which is a busy time for the branch. First up is the Annual Taieri Tour, followed a couple of weeks later with the Commercial and Veteran Rally, then in mid-December the Xmas BBQ. Details for the BBQ are in the Road Runner – please put your name down and come along to join us – it is a great night and full of camaraderie. Our Club Captain is working on adding some new events to the calendar for 2021 including a combined garage raid (will be something for everyone), Coast to Coast Rally and another overnighter. Planning for all three are all still in the initial stages however keep an eye out from details in future Road Runner magazines.

You are reminded that if you have not paid this by the 20th of October that you will now need to pay the full amount invoiced. Christmas BBQ - Don’t for get to let us know you intentions for the Christmas BBQ. Bring along you children and grandchildren - it would be good to be able to include them in this. Upcoming Events at other branches - Entry Forms If you would like a copy of entry forms for events that are happening elsewhere. There should be a copy in the clubrooms or contact me for a copy. I have a pile of different ones at the moment as we head into a busy few months of motoring. Entries usually close within two weeks of the event.
Library Roster: We have had a few members pull out of the library Roster. If you can spare a few hours on a Friday evening every 5-6 weeks please let us know. Thanks
VIC Applications – please note - VIC Application forms have been updated - again. When completing these forms please ensure that you have the most up to date form titled Sept 2019 – Check the VCC website. – These continue to be updated as procedures change etc. NNB: Please if you are planning to enter a local event, and running late with entry forms, please contact the organizer by phone or email to let them know you are coming. They need to know numbers for printing the instructions, and catering purposes for some events. Spare Parts Shed – Parts shed is usually open every Wednesday morning, and Friday evenings when the clubrooms are open. Reminder – see if you can effectively recycle your parts before scrapping them. NO TYREs by request.

ROADWORKS AROUND THE CLUBROOMS We have been advised that over the next few months the Council and Fulton Hogan will be doing realignment work on Forbury Road at the Bayview Road Corner. As a result parking for cars will be at a premium. Access to the clubrooms may be limited at certain times – so please be aware of this and plan to park a little further away. There is also a back entrance to the club grounds off Bayview Road – where parking may be a little easier. PWV/P60/P80 Rally The 20th September dawned a fine day which was picture perfect for the annual PWV/P60/P80 rally and picnic lunch organised by Ray Wilson and Malcolm Eunson. Following a briefing mid-morning we made our way to Macraes Flat via SH1 to Palmerston – up the Pigroot to Dunback and then the Dunback – Middlemarch Road. All was going well until we came across some roadworks just north of the mine entrance. Oceana Gold were building a new road which took us further inland before doubling back to the mine entrance and then joining up with the original road. Not expecting this you could be forgiven for thinking that you were lost until you found a familiar landmark. Oceana had moved fast as Ray said that the new road was not there when he completed a reccy a week or two earlier. After lunch Ray had arranged an optional detour to the Callery Battery at the Golden Point Historic Reserve. The reserve protects remnants of Otago’s gold mining history and also houses unique machinery such as a stamper battery in working order.
Prior to departing Malcolm announced the prize winners for each of the categories and it may have been coincidental however it was also a day for the dogs as all the winners had also taken their dogs for an outing. Thank you to Ray and Malcolm for organising a great day out and congratulations to Kevin and Trish Fowler (PWV), Mark and Nicola Wilkinson (P60) and Kevin and Val Mason (P80) for winning your respective categories – we look forward to an interesting rally in 2021.

THANKS Rally packs will be available at 8.45am. and the briefing will be at 9.15am sharp. The cars will leave in order for the short journey to the Octagon, with the Official Opening of the DCC Festival programme. We need to be in the Octagon by 9.45am. Entrants will depart the Octagon from 11.00a.m. for Brighton, which includes the timed section.
Field Tests will be held at Brighton Domain. Concours Judging will take place at First Church, and at Brighton Domain. The Concours is a separate competition and is not taken into account in the rally results. 35 Year Awards We were finally able to award 35 year badges to Max and Barry Dewar during the Dunvegan weekend. They have both been regular attendees at Dunvegan Motorcycle Rallies, and many other Motorcycle events.

THOUGHTS FROM OUR CLUB CAPTAIN - KEVIN MASON Kevin has been pondering over a number of suggestions that have been coming his way from our members: Branch Overnight Run A few of us have been looking at the possibility of doing another Overnight Run on 21-23rd March 2021 (Anniversary weekend) around South Otago, Southland - there have been a few expressions of interest in this run – so Kevin is working on finalising details. Coast to Coast Run This is still being worked on with a few members, as they look out the best way to do this. 15
50 YEAR COMMEMORATIVE AWARD - Bob Woodford Bob received his 50 Year Award on Friday 2nd October during the supper held prior to Dunvegan Rally – It was presented by Kevin Clarkson Prior to joining the Vintage Car Club from possibly the first Brighton Run, Bob would walk out to the Main Road at Green Island and watch the Brighton Run entrants go through for many years. His next encounter was in 1960 when he went to Auckland to work. His boss was Horace Robinson, founder of the Auckland Veteran and Vintage Car Club. During his time there Horace shifted house, and had no room at the new home for his 1925 Sunbeam. Quite a large stately limousine, Horace offered it to Bob for the sum of 125pounds. He didn’t take up his offer. The reasons being - that his budget would not allow, and it wasn’t really cool for a young guy of 16. During the 1965 Sixth International Rally (Haast Rally) - the mechanic at Bobs work, Brian Middlemiss, put Bob’s name down to marshall at the Motor Show in the Drill Hall. Bob knew a few of the local VCC members, either as Army personal or as members of the Otago Sports Car Club. From 1965 to 1968-69 Bob attended a few other Otago Branch activities, like the 1968 Pagent of Motoring, and Invermay as a spectator or again a marshall. In 1968 he purchased a 1930 Ford Model A 5 window Coupe. But didn’t keep it long as it had a few hidden issues, so sold it with a small profit. In August 1969 Bob purchased his 1932 Ford V8 Sedan, and immediately started work for it to pass acceptance as a PVV. He officially joined the VCC of NZ during the 1969-1970 year. His 1932 Ford V8 was officially accepted on 1st October 1971, and is VCC register No PV51. Bob held the position of House Convener over the period of 1971-1972 He completed the 13th International Rally to Nelson in 1972 in his 1932 Ford V8, and fired the cannon to start and finish the 24 hour relay race at Renwick circuit. In 1972 he suggested the running of an annual rally - which became the Taieri Tour. The first such event was organized by Wayne Henderson and Dave Fitzgerald in 1973. Bob was also elected on to committee as Club Captain in 1973 – He remained in this position until 1978 and again in 1982 1977 Bob served on the Brighton Run committee and chairman. 1983-1988 he served again as Branch Chairman and didn’t seek re -election in 1988 -89, but remained on the committee over the 1988-1989 year. Because of a loose comment in the company of Gordon Sharpe and Peter Gendall “Why don’t we run a Road Race” That was the start of organizing the 1984 and later the 1986 Road Race and other speed events. In 1986 Bob was voted in as National Speed Steward. And was also member of National Sub Committee for Pacific Basin Historic Race Series. 16
50 YEAR COMMEMORATIVE AWARD - Bob Woodford In 1981 he ran the parts shed on the Ammunition Track opening Sunday mornings once a month or by request for a number of years In 1971 he entered the 1st PVV Rally Queenstown and for several years after In 1972 he entered the 1st Clutha Rally and for several years after In 1973 he entered the 1st Taieri Tour and several more over the years. Bob has also been a participant in the Windsor, Gore, Riverton, Mid Island, Dunvegan,100 years of Motoring and Invermay events (in 5 different vehicles over the years) He entered the Pan Pacific Rally in 1986, and the 50 th VCC Anniversary Rally held in Christchurch in 1996. Bob currently owns the following Club Eligible Vehicles 1932 Ford Model 18 Fordor Sedan. 1935 Ford Fordor Touring Deluxe Sedan. 1953 Ford Crestline Victoria. 1980 Ford Cortina 2.0 GL 1989 Alfa Romeo series 3 QV Spider He is also a Member of Early Ford V8 Club of America. Regional Groups, Kansas City Regional Group. Southern Kiwi Regional Group (Founder member) Northern New Zealand Regional Group. Early Ford V8 Foundation (Charter Member) Antique Automobile Club of America. Alfa Romeo Owners Club of New Zealand. New Zealand International Director Early Ford V8 Club of America 1992-2013 Since 1993 International Senior Points judge in America and Australia. From 1983 Bob and Margaret have entered - eight Early Ford V8 Club of America Grand National Meets and or National Meets. Four Australian National Meets and ten New Zealand National Meets.
Now that he has retired from work – it is good to see his enthusiasm and drive as he starts to show an interest in branch activities again. The VCC of NZ congratulate Bob on achieving his 50-year Award. Thanks must also go to Margaret who has always been there as his navigator and supporter.

Dunvegan 2020 A great variety of motorcycles assembled at the start for the 49th rally, leaving at minute intervals for the first 66 kilometres of timed section. The route took in the Taieri and Saddle Hill, with perfect sunny weather the views from here impressed the out of town riders, as did the coastal road to Taieri Mouth and the hill section to Waihola, the end of the timed section. Turning off to Kaitangata, the morning finished at the South Otago Branch rooms for lunch. Just one bike on the trailer - a Rudge with gearbox problems, sadly not repairable on the day, but with a few minor fettles to other bikes after lunch it was a pleasant ride to Clydevale. The warm stiff headwinds slowed all but the most powerful models but once at Tapanui, a coffee for some, and ice cream for others, the road to Kelso, Heriot, Dunrobin and Moa Flat was very picturesque with huge snowdrifts on the roadsides. It was all downhill to Millers Flat and the last stretch to the Riders Rest at Roxburgh - some may have needed a rest by now, even though they wouldn't admit it. Our meal team cranked the BBQ and before long an excellent meal was produced for the 36 people as well as a couple of refreshments. With prizegiving over and discussion for the 50th Dunvegan next year, many took off to bed leaving a handful of 'stayers ' to discuss the day. One or two bikes were heard to depart before most were out of bed - a long haul home for a number of the entries. Breakfast and clean-up done by our efficient team once again, it was homeward bound striking rain - who cares after another successful enjoyable Dunvegan! Our regulars from Nelson, others from Blenheim, Ashburton, Christchurch, Timaru, Oamaru and Balclutha, together with our locals made the 33 entries, about the normal number for our annual motorcycle event. Roll on 2021 and number 50. The overall winner was Lex Westoby from Timaru riding a Yamaha.
