In the Driving Seat It’s really great to see the turn out of members for our club nights to support the guest speakers who have regaled us with a variety of topics from VW’s to Enduring Powers of Attorney, Trusts, the Manapouri dam and recently scams. With the rallying season starting in earnest, the speakers are now on hold until early next year. The committee has a couple of speakers already lined up for 2020, however we would love to add to the list so if you know of anyone who would be interested then please let us know. Thank you to the small committee who organised our display at the Autospectacular. This was very much put together at the last minute as we were on a waiting list while we waited for the organising committee to find us a site. Following on from the Autospectacular was the GM Night Rally with this years route arranged by a couple from the Land Rover Club who decided that they would shake things up by not having the winners organise the next event. 2020’s rally will be organised by Ruth and Gil Edmunds so please note this in your diaries as I know they will appreciate the support. October is a busy month for the branch starting with the annual Dunvegan rally. Nevin Gough is organising the Prince Henry Tour for the Veteran Vehicles which is held either prior to or following the National Veteran Rally. At the same time we will be hosting the entrants participating in the North Cape to Bluff Tour. We have been invited to join them on the Taieri Gorge trip on Wednesday the 16th which will be followed by a dinner at the club rooms that night. I would really appreciate some support from members so please let me know if you are able to attend. Coming up in November will be the Taieri Tour and the Commercial Veteran Rally - entry forms can be found in the magazine, at the club rooms or from Marion. Annual Membership Fees – Your annual fees are now due. If you have not paid your fees yet – this will be the last Roadrunner that you will receive. Please let me know if you have not received an account yet. National North Island Easter Rally - Horowhenua 10-13 April Entry forms, information booklet and newsletters are now being emailed to branches. If you would like these forwarded to you and do not have email please let me know. Our treasurer will not be happy if all this needs to be printed in our Roadrunner. Obituary: Adrian Mulder It is with sadness that we record the passing of Adrian Mulder. Adrian put many hours of work and knowledge into the restoration of the Locomobile which was completed last year. He worked alongside many of our members in an effort to get this project completed. Our thoughts go out to his family and all who knew him. Swapmeets - I have received a number of notices for swapmeets happening around the country over the next few months. Please check individual branch newsletters on the VCC website to find further information for these. There is simply to many to include in our own newsletter. They are listed under the calendar of events. Library Roster: We have had a few members pull out of the library Roster. If you can spare a few hours on a Friday evening every 5-6 weeks please let us know. Thanks. VIC Applications – please note - VIC Application forms have been updated - again. When completing these forms please ensure that you have the most up to date form titled Sept 2019 – Check the VCC website. –These continue to be updated as procedures change etc. Other Branch Rally Entry Forms - as you will see there are a lot of events happening in and around our region over the next 6 months. I email details to all members who have email address’s. There are sometimes a few copies in the clubrooms, please ensure you leave at least one copy there, so that others can copy them. Photocopier is available. NNB: Please if you are planning to enter a local event, and running late with entry forms, please contact the organizer by phone or email to let them know you are coming. They need to know numbers for printing the instructions, and catering purposes for some events. Spare Parts Shed – Parts shed is usually open every Wednesday morning, and Friday evenings when the clubrooms are open. Reminder – see if you can effectively recycle your parts before scrapping them. NO TYREs by request.

Please make a point of familiarising yourself of its location – Never know when it might be needed. If they have insurance cover under the VCC Scheme with Vero, current membership is a requirement.

Just out of interest - especially following Nicola Wilkinson's talk last month. This was sent to me via another interest group. They have found this which seems to cover all the most important points. Make no mistake, these criminals are often very convincing and they know how to get what they want. People have been victims of a scam that involved a person saying they were from our bank, with just enough detail to be convincing. Lesson one, your bank will never ring like that to make changes to your account. I hope you find this of interest. Marion.

Prince Henry Tour 2019 At the 2018 National Veteran Rally in Nelson the late Glenis Miller approached Nevin Gough and suggested he could do the 2019 Tour to finish in Timaru before the National Veteran Rally. 14th of October saw the fruition of his efforts. With the promise of up to 7 vehicles attending this tour – 4 arrived at the start point of Ross Home in Dunedin. The plan was to keep off SH1 as much as possible. Thank you to the team at Ross Home who supplied us all with a hot drink and fresh scones on arrival. There was still a cool nip in the air. Residents got the chance to check out these vehicles and Trevor “the flag” waved us off as each car departed for the journey to Timaru. Travelling over Mount Cargill to Waitati, we had to farewell Colin and Joan Pearce as their Sunbeam was not behaving itself. (After being trailered home, they managed to get their other Sunbeam sorted and trailered it up to Timaru on time for the National Veteran Rally). We had Colin and Judy Winter, Kevin Mason and a mate do the time trial section on our way to Waitati. After taking the old Coast Road and turning into Goodwood Road, Colin and Judy joined us for lunch in Palmerston. We then travelled to Oamaru via Kakanui. We were joined by North Otago members and the North Cape to Bluff Tour team for dinner that evening. Tuesday morning - we headed to Twizel with lunch stop in Omarama. Bryan and I had the opportunity to swap vehicles with Nevin and Kelly. Nevin’s Model T van was great to drive in, while they followed behind in the back-up vehicle. We checked out a couple of the power stations around Twizel before checking in for the night. Prizegiving was this evening as Ross’s, in their 1915 Dodge, were heading for Ashburton after lunch the following day to collect their Veteran Cadillac for the National Veteran Rally. A gorgeous Wednesday morning greeted us as we headed to Tekapo and Burkes Pass with a stop at Three Creeks – well worth a look at the quirky collection of everything motoring and hand made outdoor furniture. Lunch stop at Fairlie and we farewelled the Ross’s. Not much further down the road and we meet the McCools from Central Hawkes Bay stopped on the roadside. A quick decision, and a few phone calls saw us putting the 1917 Model T on the trailer and diverting to Hinds. The T was left in the shed of a fellow Model T owner, with a plan to return in the morning to repair it. Then to Timaru for a good night sleep. Next day saw Peter and Bryan head back to Hinds to repair the T. Thankfully Peter arrived back in Timaru at 6.30 pm driving the repaired Model T , now all ready for the Veteran Rally. – That evening we regrouped with Ross’s for dinner. We all enjoyed the Tour for what it is – a relaxed tour off Main Highways, with the opportunity to see and appreciate our own backyard. To meet and get to know our fellow members, as we meet up at lunch and dinner times and along the route. We had lots of laughs especially in anticipation of who was going to be presented with the Prince Henry Trophy. Congratulations to Peter and Suzanne McCool from Otane in Central Hawkes Bay.

Mid-Week Run – 26 September 2019 Twelve vehicles and occupants descended on the Outram School to see how Peter Daniels watched over the pupils dismantling, repairing and reassembling motors. One young budding mechanic stripped down a Triumph 2.5 motor, repaired it, and reassembled on a motor stand again – “a very proud young man”! Also in the garage was another motor in going order, plus four lawn mowers, a motorbike an push bikes. Peter spoke proudly of his team and their achievements. This all done voluntarily and in the boys’ lunch time break. Apparently there is a waiting list to be part of it. The boys then checked out the vehicles that the mid-Week Group took there. The weather was very cold with a strong southerly blowing. We then descended back to Wal’s Café for a nice hot cuppa.

Dunvegan No 48 The days of 60 to 70 entries for “Dunvegan� as in the early days is history, but the 30 mark seems to be the norm these days. With a nip in the air the riders left the start from the Chinese Garden carpark, most not bothering about their official leaving time, others taking the timing side seriously to the end of this section at Waihola. South Otago Branch clubrooms was the lunch stop and one bike on the trailer with a flat tyre - it was a quick wheel out and new tube, carried out by two or three helpers, this while the elderly owner had his lunch. Over 300 miles were ridden for the weekend, the overnight venue being the Alexandra Holiday Camp. After lunch the ride up to Clydevale and the Rongahere Gorge to Beaumont was very pleasant although some ran into quite heavy rain. A small number from the entry took the millennium track up the other side of the river, a bit of a challenge in the rain with many ruts and quite deep water holes. From Roxbugh East, crossing the dam it was an easy ride to Alexandra. While our out-of-town entries relaxed our own group of chiefs manned the BBQ and ovens and presented an excellent evening meal for the 34 hungry souls; well done boys. After prizegiving and much bike talk the 34 gradually disappeared to their beds, just a small group of stayers to go over the days experience. It was great to see entries from Nelson, Ashburton, Balclutha, Timaru, Te Anau and a record number from Christchurch eleven - well done Canterbury. A variety of bikes including Matchless, Norton, BSA, Triumph, Suzuki, Francis Barnett, Royal Enfield, Ariel, Honda, Scott, Silk, Yamaha, Moto Guzzi and it was unusual to see seven BMW models on the entry list. With the bikes outside and a really serious frost in the morning a number of bikes were reluctant to start, but with a little coaxing all took off homeward bound. Bill Irwin from Nelson took the top spot, overall winner for this popular event. As well as the on-site helpers, a big thanks to others back home who made the rally a great event; Brian W, Lyn and Donna, also Dave H (he was with us), plus Dave T for the use of his van.
