Restoration Rally A reminder that this is coming up on16 May. If you have recently restored and got a vehicle back on the road in the last year please consider putting it up for the Restoration Achievement / Trophy Award. This is a good opportunity too for our branch members to come and view your restorations. Please get your entries into the Secretary as soon as possible so that the judges have adequate notice. See page 13 for an entry form.
PROPOSED CAR BOOT SALE - AT CLUBROOMS EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST
There has been a suggestion that the committee look at running a Car Boot Sale at the Clubrooms. Original suggestion was to have it on a Wednesday morning, but this would prevent those who are still working to use this opportunity. Expressions of interest in booking a site for Car Boot (no trailers) Sale on a Saturday or Sunday are being called for. Please contact Kevin Mason 4885198

In the Driving Seat I hope everyone has been enjoying the Autumnal weather and taking advantage of getting out and about in your club vehicles. The garage raid organised by Kevin on the 24th April has attracted a good number of members wanting to attend. Although it is still to be held as I write I know that Kevin has arranged visits to some interesting garages so I hope that this event will become a permanent feature on the calendar. Also recently held was the Otago Rally which had a record number of entries. Thanks to members who were available to help marshall. Thank you to Trevor Kempton who stepped in at the last minute and gave a talk at the March club night. Everyone attending enjoyed the presentation especially the Kiwi connection with some of the bikes. We are always on the lookout for speakers so if you are interested, please let us know. It does not need to be of a motoring theme, it could be a holiday, previous occupation etc. At the May club night Mark Wilkinson will be giving an update on enduring power of attorney’s and recent changes to the Trust Law Also coming up in May is the Restoration Rally – entry forms are in the Road Runner or contact Marion for more information . Your secretary does email some of the south island branches to members with email addresses. ENTRY FORMS FOR OTHER BRANCH EVENTS These can be accessed via the branch newsletters on the VCC website. Or there should be a copy in the clubrooms or contact me for a copy. Entries usually close within two weeks of the event. NNB: Please if you are planning to enter a local event, and running late with entry forms, please contact the organizer by phone or email to let them know you are coming. They need to know numbers for printing the instructions, and catering purposes for some events.
LIBRARY: We have had a few members pull out of the library Roster. If you can spare a few hours on a Friday evening every 5-6 weeks please let us know. Thanks SPARE PARTS SHED: – Parts shed is usually open every Wednesday morning, and Friday evenings when the clubrooms are open. Reminder – see if you can effectively recycle your parts before scrapping them. NO TYREs by request.
VIC APPLICATIONS – please note - VIC Application forms have been updated – again
PLEASE CHECK THAT ALL PAPERWORK/PHOTOS ARE PRESENT AND CORRECT BEFORE FORWARDING TO YOUR BRANCH VEHICLE REGISTRAR – It gets very time consuming when we need to contact you time and again to ensure everything is sorted. The VIC/Authenticity Statement forms were altered back in October 2020 with regard to the VTC needing photos of the chassis/frame number and/or engine number of vehicles. Each application you make for a vehicle MUST include these along with the 3 identical photos (correct size) of the vehicle. Applications will be put on hold until these are supplied, if they do not accompany the application, when submitted to National Office. Please can you ensure that the application forms are completed fully, especially in regards to mileage, engine manufacturer, some history of the vehicle (even if it is only “purchased from Trade Me in April 1999”) and which Branch is completing the form. The Branch is often missing from Non-Member applications and my knowledge of small places in New Zealand is not that great so a Branch name would assist greatly. LAST FRIDAY OF THE MONTH – CLUB NIGHT GUEST SPEAKERS
At our last meeting it was agreed that we should continue with Guest Speakers on the last Friday of each month before our club meeting. We are always looking for volunteers/suggestions for speakers please contact a committee member if you have any thoughts on this. The next speaker is scheduled for: Friday 28th – Mark Wilkinson – will do a presentation on : update on recent changes to Power of Attorney and Trusts. NB: There have been some changes to the speakers over recent months, due to the speakers not being available for their allocated time. These speakers will be rescheduled at a later date. NATIONAL RALLY FOR CANCER Sunday 22 August 2021
Our committee have discussed this day, and are hoping to be able to combine with South Otago Branch as we did in 2019. We are currently looking at suitable venues/options for a public display suitable for up to 100 vehicles and their crews. Please keep this date free as this is also an opportunity for us to showcase our branches and the national club. If you would like to assist with the organising of this event please let a committee member know. ENTERTAINMENT BOOK - Digital version’s for the coming year are now available for sale via our branch. The branch gets a contribution from the sale of each book, which helps towards running costs of our clubrooms. Screen Industry need for diverse vehicles The level of film, tv and commercial activity in the Otago Southland region is growing. Antony Deaker who runs the Film Office for Dunedin City Council Bond St, Dunedin as 1950s Manhattan, New York. (Credit Gregor Richardson) and works in partnership regionally with the Queenstown Film Office has been in touch with the Club to enquire about possibility to develop a file of cars and the owners contact details. The information held will only be shared with Production crew for confirmed screen projects based in the region. If club members are interested to make their cars available for film and television projects, please send a photograph of each vehicle noting its year, make and model whether it is right hand drive or left hand drive and provide your preferred contact details. THE BIG TICK RUN COAST TO COAST 12 - 13 June 2021 Start 8am at John Wilson Drive George Martin has set the date and Route for the much anticipated Coast to Coast Run. This will be going ahead regardless of numbers. The plan is to see the SUNRISE at 8.21am on John Wilson Drive on Saturday Morning, then departing to Travel SH1 to Milton, Right at SH8 Clarksville Morning tea at Lawrence Continue SH8 to Alexandra and Cromwell for Lunch. After lunch to SH6 to Luggate, Albert Town and Makarora (afternoon tea) Then on to Haast accommodation, and in time to see the SUNSET at 5.14pm. Sunday morning: Leave Haast to Hawea (Lunch) then left to Albert Town on SH6 then SH8 to Cromwell (afternoon tea) Left at Clyde to Omakau on SH85 to Ranfurly Right at Kyeburn SH87 Middlemarch, Mosgiel and home. Distance is approx. 400 kms each way Vehicle - VCC eligible or Modern if more convenient, beware of distance being travelled Fuel and meals are your own responsibility. South Otago Motorcycle Rally How the weeks slip by, had to look back to March 13 when this popular event was held, feels like three weeks ago. As usual, the Branch fed the twenty odd entrants morning tea. Roger gave the briefing, and although the bikes were to leave at minute intervals for the timed section many just took off any time. We turned off the highway to Kakapuaka, and picked up the Owaka road at Finegand, the timed section finishing at Owaka. Pleasant weather and a great motorcycle ride south took us to Niagara to the lunch venue but there had been recent re- sealing in places so care was required on the 'ball bearings'. Fortunately it was incident free, also no breakdowns. I think we may have had an all-time record number of our Branch bike members at eleven, plus two pillion navigators - an excellent effort from Otago. Trevor C . Dave H . John S . Les. S . Trevor K . Other news: Our two-stroke brainiac Trevor Kempton was our guest speaker recently. He kept the good attendance fascinated explaining the complexities of those smelly smokey engines, the type with just three moving parts - so nothing to go wrong! Thanks Trevor we all enjoyed your wit. By the time we go to print this month a number of our Biker Boys will have been to North Otago for the Lynch Blosse rally. This popular event attracts good numbers and every year the organisers seem to find inland roads we haven't seen before. Report on Oamaru next month. Bill Veitch 16
It started in lockdown……. Episode 7 It is difficult to report on progress when little has happened. However, I will attempt to explain why. In 6th form calculus I was introduced to asymptotes. These are the mathematical relationships which, when put on a graph have the curve running closer and closer to one axis but never touching or crossing it. This might better be explained by modelling a frog in a barrel of treacle. The frog jumps from one side of the barrel and makes it halfway across before landing in the treacle. From then on, the effect of the treacle means that it can only jump half the length of the previous jump. So, how many jumps does it take to reach the other side? I have concluded that electroplating, frogs, and treacle have a lot in common. Every phone call I make I am told that the job is closer to finished. It has been held up by an apocalypse or two, holidays, baths springing leaks, re-working poor preparation and if I asked, I am sure covid would feature in the excuses. However, I am told it is getting closer and closer to completion and am coming to believe that electroplating is an asymptotic process. Will I ever see the shiny bits again?
It is true that there are many things I could carry on with in the meantime, but the arrival of shiny bits does re-motivate. However, my mind strayed to the next project. Something to distract me while I wait. A wee T125 in Auckland which I have bought from a friend of a friend. Bike Tranz are on the job but it’s been a while and it hasn’t arrived yet, so the race is on. Hopefully, I haven’t got two frogs in the barrel! It will be a challenge with the rolling chassis having been hastily reassembled for the trip and two motors dismantled and looking forlorn in fish boxes. But hey, it was cheap and as always it ran before it was dismantled! Trevor Kempton

Good chuckles for your entertainment .. supplied by Bob Woodford I changed my car horn to gunshot sounds. People get out of the way much faster now. I didn't make it to the gym today. That makes five years in a row. I decided to stop calling the bathroom the "John" and renamed it the "Jim". I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.
Old age is coming at a really bad time. When I was a child I thought "Nap Time" was a punishment. Now, as a grownup, it feels like a small vacation. The biggest lie I tell myself is, "I don't need to write that down, I'll remember it." I don't have gray hair; I have "wisdom highlights"! I seem to get wiser every day. If God wanted me to touch my toes, He would've put them on my knees. Last year I joined a support group for procrastinators. We haven't met yet.
