BRANCH AGM 14TH JUNE 2020 This will still go ahead as advertised but without the Pot Luck Lunch before-hand. Please see Nicola’s note in her Chairman’s Report. Nominations for Committee: Committee positions open for election this year are: Secretary, Club Captain, House Manager, Editor, and two committee member positions. Please take some time to think about who you would like to have on the committee. The committee has always worked well together. It would be good to get some new people of board because with them we get new ideas. 25/35 year awards - If you feel you are due recognition for continuous 25 / 35 year membership – Please contact your branch secretary as soon as possible. These need to be checked with National Office before we can present them. Reading back over my comments from the April Road Runner it is hard to believe that these were written only a month ago and prior to COVID 19 and lockdown. I hope that everyone is staying safe within their bubble. Lockdown has been the perfect time to get everything done around home and in the garage that we were putting off until we had time. The committee has been reading through the requirements for each COVID 19 alert level to work out when we can look to re-open the club rooms. The committee has decided until further notice all normal club activities will be cancelled - this includes the Wednesday morning working bees, Thursday runs and more importantly the Restoration Rally. As a one off next year’s Restoration award will be open to any vehicle that would have been eligible for judging this year. Under level 2 we need to record all attendances every time we meet plus keep social distancing (reduced to 1 metre) so the committee feels that it is easier not to tempt fate or forget to follow the guidelines. Hopefully the country is not kept in level 2 for too long and drops to level 1 where life can return to some form of normality. Please be assured that the committee will be reviewing this decision during May and will update you on any developments. We have reduced the branch expenses to the bare minimum and have a healthy bank balance to keep us going in the meantime however I have asked David to complete a trial profit and loss for the next couple of months to ensure that we can maintain this position. At this stage we are still planning to hold the branch AGM on 14 June however it will be the meeting only. The kitchen and bar will remain closed so the pot luck lunch prior to the meeting and afternoon tea after the meeting have been cancelled. Entry will be via the main door - the side door will only be used as an emergency exit. Both toilets have hot water available so you will be able to wash /dry your hands and hand sanitiser will be available. There will be an attendance desk at the entrance to the hall for every member to record their attendance. Chairs will be set out at a minimum of 1-2 metres apart however family members in the same bubble may move their chairs closer together. Any member who feels that they are not well enough to attend the AGM can contact Marion via email with any items of general business they want discussed. As mentioned we will keep you up to date on any developments and as soon as the committee feel that it is safe to re-open the club rooms we will. South Otago Branch Annual Motorcycle Rally 7th of March dawned fine for the South Otago Branch annual motorcycle rally and this popular event attracted twenty plus entries. After the normal morning tea, organiser Roger gave the briefing and heading South, turning to Kakapuaka, Finegand, Paretai and Kaka Point the end of the timed section one or two riders stopped to make minor adjustments. It was then on to Owaka to stop and inspect a number of bikes mainly speedway type and second-hand books. A kickstart or two and it was up the Owaka valley but not so for the writer, the BSA refused to start and required a heathy push, a problem persisting off and on during the day. It's a great ride up the first part of the valley but further on gravel and unbelievable dust after our dry spell for eight miles, and of course oncoming traffic had to be at full speed, dust, dust and more dust. Lunch stop and catch-up chat was at the Clinton Tavern. The non-competitive return ride to Balclutha kept off Highway 1 to Wairuna, Clydevale and followed the Clutha river back to the Clubrooms.
Our Branch members featured in the results but best of all Kevin Mason on the tiniest bike in the rally was the overall winner, well done Kevin. Six from here ventured south: Bruce Murray, Ariel. Bruce Christie, Norton. Les Sherer, Triumph. John Sim, Matchless. Bill Veitch, BSA. Kevin Mason, Francis Barnett. As normal, a well organised event, the last for many months I suspect.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
The recent display and non-competitive demonstration of old race cars at this years’ Skope Race Meeting in February at Ruapuna was a big success and will be repeated at next years’ event and hopefully at other South Island race meetings. To help us with this project, members of the Banks Peninsula Branch of the VCC, are compiling a free register of all such vehicles whatever their state of repair, restoration or condition, so that these historic old race cars are never lost or lose their identity. This documented information may also help owners to obtain history, knowledge and even valuable parts required to enable these race-cars to once more be active. “We’re endeavouring to collect as much information as possible on cars residing in the South Island at the present time, but in the future hopefully make this a National Register” says Don Gerrard. It was apparent from many enthusiasts and spectators at February’s event that these old race cars create huge interest and are a vital part of the old car movement which needs to be resurrected and encouraged. Many owners don’t necessarily wish to competitively race their cars, but still wish to exercise them at appropriate venues. Already we have over 40 old race cars on the register which haven’t been seen on the track in decades. So if you missed this year’s event, have such a car or know of someone who has, please drop an email with the details to either of the contacts below and we will be pleased to include on the register. Like many of your diaries, our calendar for April was full of events and appointments – when the lockdown was announced these and more have been wiped of the calendar. Already the way we have been doing things are starting to change. Even I have had to learn more about the digital world and try to understand how it works - I will never master it all.

We have not had any events happening over the last month – hence there is less content for the Roadrunner. We think a lot of members have potentially been busy in their mini bubble (shed) working on their various projects. It would be really great to get some stories - good, bad, ugly and outrageous for the Roadrunner. These can be anonymous if you don’t want to put our name to it. Looking forward to reading some of these.
Branch email address and contact details
Over the past month with the lockdown, and the need to be able to keep in touch with members, I was asked to put together an updated email and contact list of our members. I have updated my database with the emails I have already got and have been in touch with many other members to get their details. As you will understand, some of you are happy for emails to be sent to you as has always been the case but others are not so comfortable about this. The committee endeavour to keep all your details as confidential as possible and will keep material to the minimum. If you have email and you have not received this via email please contact your branch secretary so your details can be updated. NB While contacting various members by phone the main topic that came to the fore was that they were missing being able to get out in their cars and socialising with fellow members. Some are keeping in touch and looking out for others – this is really great to hear. We all look forward to getting out there again once we are able to.
Beaded Wheels April/May edition
This issue did not go to the printers – due to the timing of Lockdown, but was still published. I did email it to members when it initially came out. If you have missed it – you are still able to view this on the VCC of NZ website. Beaded Wheels are continuing with publication of the June/July issue and are happy for members to continue supplying them with material to publish.

For any of the VCC members who are interested in accessing or just finding out what the VCC Facebook page is all about, please see the following letter:
Dear Branch Secretary, My name is Rosalie Brown and I have had dealings with many of you in my role as the Beaded Wheels coordinator and club website administrator. I have recently taken over an additional task with the club, administering the club's Facebook page. There was to be announcement and explanation of what the club wants to achieve using Facebook at the executive meeting but unfortunately that will no longer go ahead so we will have to roll out the Facebook plans in a more gradual manner. The club has had a Facebook page for about three years - it has gradually grown its audience and we are looking to increase that over time. We have now added a Facebook group to our page. It is the club’s intention that the Facebook group will become an online community for members to interact with each other. The Facebook group is not limited to members of the club, it is a place for anyone who is interested in old vehicles to come together and share stories of our common interest and learn more about our club. It is a private group - so people need to answer questions to be able to join, this will add a level of security to the community although like any online forum members should be vigilant to scams operating. If there is any suspicious activity please alert the group administrator. What does this mean for you? If you have experience or have someone in your club that is keen to get going on Facebook now is a great time to action that. There is nothing to stop any branch setting up a Facebook page of their own but the advantage of using the national page and group is that we encourage communication with club members up and down the country. The advantage of using our official Vintage Car Club Group is that if you join the group, you can post information directly on the group page. (Anyone who joins this group can post on this page.) This is an easy way of communicating information out to those members of your branch who are active on Facebook. We would encourage branches to find a member who is happy to post information about branch activities on behalf of your branch I’m the Facebook group. As an alternative, I am happy to post anything that you would like publicised in the Facebook group - email it to me and I can post it on your behalf. A quick note about COVID-19: I have updated the club events page on our national website. This now includes an event status column so that if an event was planned but is now cancelled people can easily see this. Newsletters for all New Zealand Branches
All branch newsletters are available to read on the VCC website. I do get them all emailed to me each month, but I do not see the point of forwarding them on to everyone, when you know that they are available to see on the website. It is then up to you to chase them if you want to have a look at them. Entry forms and other relevant information from other branches will however still be forwarded on to you via email.

When completing these forms please ensure that you have the most up to date form titled Sept 2019 – Check the VCC website. –These continue to be updated as procedures change etc. NNB: Please if you are planning to enter a local event, and running late with entry forms, please contact the organizer by phone or email to let them know you are coming. They need to know numbers for printing the instructions, and catering purposes for some events.
Spare Parts Shed – Parts shed is usually open every Wednesday morn-
ing, and Friday evenings when the clubrooms are open. Reminder – see if you can effectively recycle your parts before scrapping them. NO TYREs by request. The nearest AED defibrillator to the clubrooms is on the outside wall of the 4 Square shop on corner of Bayview Road. Please make a point of familiarising yourself of its location. Never know when it might be needed.

South Island Club Captains Tour March 2020
Yes! we made it before look down We were invited to go and stay with Alon and Tracy for however long before the start of the Tour on the 16th of March. We left home in our 1978 Cortina Ghia on Friday and headed north, making the point of visiting a couple of family members on the way. Graeme and Cheryl Taylor were also staying with Mayhews. On Saturday the men busied themselves with their cars to ensure they were in good running order, while Tracy, Cheryl and I started work in the kitchen preparing for the 34 entrants who were expected for tea on Sunday night. Paul and Bev Hicks from Warkworth in their 1955 MG TFI500, and John and Shirley Foote in their 1985 Nissan Laurel were the only entrants from the North Island. It was great to see stalwart – Neil McVicar and daughters Fay and Ann from Gore join us in their 1949 Austin A40. The youngest entrant was Shane Backhouse from Christchurch driving a Ford Escort. Other vehicles on the tour were: 1926 Morris Oxford Tourer, 1927 Chrysler, 1928 Dodge Victory 6, 1930 Chrysler, 1976 Daimler XJ6, 1979 Triumph, 1968 Daimler V8 Saloon, 1979 Holden Torana, 1977 Triumph T/C 2.5, 1978 Triumph 2.55, 1972 Austin 1300, 1956 Morris Minor. Gil and Ruth Edmonds in their 1980 1275 GT Mini Clubman, Merv and Lynn Thomson in their 1963 Hillman Minx, and Kevin Mason in his 1982 Ford Cortina were the other entrants from Otago Branch. Everyone was looking forward to driving the Molesworth track in a few days’ time. But that all depended on the weather gods! On Monday we left Rangiora via Ohoka and Kaiapoi towards the Christchurch hill suburbs. The drive from Sumner via Evans Pass to Lyttleton, and its famous donut café, was stunning in the sun. The rebuilt road gave you the opportunity to stop and enjoy the panoramic views over Lyttleton harbour. We took the Coast Road to Governor’s Bay and over Gebbies Pass to Waihora Domain for lunch. Driving south along the coast towards Southbridge then inland to Raikaia. Drizzle greeted us as we approached Methven for the night. Tuesday, and it was off to Greymouth with picnic lunch at Arthurs Pass. From Otira we decided to take the Lake Brunner Road to find that a gravel detour was required due to a closed road. The drive along Bell Hill Rd with the bush hugging the road, gave an insight to how most of the west coast roads used to be. The views overlooking the coast were just magic. Then it was a rush to find the motel before Happy Hour at 4.30pm

Wednesday morning dawned clear and calm. The McVicar’s were heading home as, his daughter needed to get flights back to Australia, due to this looming virus. We missed you guys and trust that all worked out okay for the trip home. We started with a visit to Roger Devlin’s garage and memorabilia display – a lot of us recognising those old house hold product signs and containers. Then on to JT’s – an original garage building up a no exit road – filled with a collection of stationary engines, and all other items motoring related. The display was well laid out, and it was interesting to read the history attached to these machines. The ladies were taken with the typewriter, that had definitely seen better days. We enjoyed a relaxed early lunch alongside Greymouth Harbour – the air sock was hanging limp – no wind. Following the coast road, we stopped and stretched our legs at the Punakaiki Rocks – no problem finding a park today – the town was quiet. Then it was off to Westport, bypassing the Cape Foulwind route and the seal colony – Happy Hour was beckoning. On Thursday we headed to Murchison via the Buller Gorge. Turning off to take the Mangles Valley Road (found a few more FORDS here) towards Lake Rotoroa then back onto SH6. We were definitely ready for that ice cream when we got to St Arnaud. A left turn onto Korere Tophouse Road and onto Richmond. We shared our evening meal with members of the Nelson VCC who had catered for us. It was great to meet up with some old mates and be introduced to others – it was a great way to end the evening.
Friday morning saw us head towards Nelson via Tahunanui then along Wakefield Quay towards Havelock for morning tea. We planned to join Mayhew’s and Thomson’s for lunch in Picton. Following Queen Charlotte Drive we took the opportunity to stop at viewing bays along the way. We discovering where the Cruise ships actually berth to allow passengers to disembark, at Picton. By now the weather had started to close in. We managed to find the others at Waikawa Bay, sheltering from the weather under a covered BBQ area. Lunch done, we headed for Blenheim. A stop at Basis was a must and then to the Marlborough Branch clubrooms and Museum to share Happy Hour and Dinner with some of their members. Tonight, Alon advised that we would not be able to travel down the Molesworth the following day due to the high fire risk in that area. After a bit of discussion, it was agreed that some entrants would take the Kaikoura Coast back down to Hamner Springs, and the rest of us would head back to Murchison via the Wairau Valley Road. We regrouped in Murchison after lunch and travelled south through the Matakitaki Valley and over the Maruia Saddle to come back out at Shenandoah Highway. This was a nice drive along the river and through the bush. We took our time as we navigated the creeks and sometimes very narrow track. Thank goodness there were no vehicles coming from the other direction. (Amy had talked of towing a trailer with a Model T on the back through here. She will be please she didn’t! Would be great to drive a Model T through there though). We all came through the other end with big smiles on our faces – time for a group photo. As the roads became quieter, due to travel restrictions starting to take effect, it was a pleasant drive through to Hamner Springs. At dinner time we talked about the plans for the next two days. Some decided to cancel Kaikoura and headed for home the next day. A small group of us decided we would continue to Kaikoura.

As we left Hamner on Saturday we criss crossed the country side while heading to Culverden and through Waiau, coming across fellow entrants heading in various directions. Taking the Inland Road from Waiau we headed for Kaikoura – missing the opportunity to visit Rodin Cars as most of the team were away at other events. Our final Happy Hour was enjoyed on the seafront in front of our motels on an amazing balmy evening. After dinner, as we bade farewell to everyone, we saw a stream of bright lights travelling south east across the dark clear sky – had some satellites just been released into space? or had Santa’s reindeer decided to go for a test drive before being put into lockdown! On Monday we decided to head straight for home. Social distancing and tracking had started. One café already had sanitiser outside the door and was running a register. We picked up a car in Christchurch, saying a quick hello to Amy – 2 metres apart. We kept moving while following the ever-changing reports. Moving from Level 2 to level 3!!. Better pick up some bread and other perishables on the way – done. We struck a heavy rain storm as we came into Oamaru – a lot of Takeaways and restaurants were already closed. We managed to find a Fish and Chip shop that was open – so had our last Fish and Chips until heaven knows when. Arriving home at 9pm. We clocked up 2800kms over the whole trip. We really enjoyed the chance to meet up with all the entrants, some have been on these tours before and some haven’t. The daily Happy Hours are always fun, where we share the days trip, and get the low-down on what is happening the next day. This time we all had the challenge of putting together a pack of cards. Each day we got more cards to add to the pack, then you would have swaps to try and get those elusive one or two cards that just didn’t want to show their face.
