FROM THE DRIVERS SEAT

I hope everyone has been enjoying our late summer and getting out and about in your vehicles. As I write I know Marion and Bryan are on their way home from the Model T Rally which from all reports on the VCC Face Book page looks like everyone had a lovely time. Speaking of Facebook – Otago branch also has a Facebook page where I post reminders of branch events plus share other posts featuring local members – search Otago Vintage Car Club. I’m happy to add other items of interest as long as it meets with VCC policy. The committee has made the difficult decision to change the Friday night Noggin and Natters and open the clubrooms on the First and Last Friday of the month. For the last couple of years we trialled these as our winter hours, however from the first of March will now be standard for the whole year. We have noticed the downturn in members coming to the clubrooms on a Friday night so are changing the hours to suit member’s needs. We will still continue with having a guest speaker on the last Friday which is club night and I would encourage as many members as possible to come along and support. This decision does not affect the Wednesday morning noggins plus any of the Parts committee would be happy to meet you on site should you want to have a look in the parts shed. The clubrooms will be open on the Friday night prior to a branch event – Brighton Rally, Taieri Tour, Dunvegan etc. The branch is helping out at the Best of British on the 14th March which this year is finishing at the Milton Rugby grounds with the proceeds going to the Dunedin Fire Restoration Society. This year’s feature vehicles will be Commercial. As in previous years we are working at the gate at the entry to the rugby grounds and while I have a small group of volunteers, I need a few extras as we have additional duties to do at the gate this year due to COVID 19 issues. Please see my advert in this month’s Road Runner. The National Executive meeting is being held in Wellington on the 20 th March and I am anticipating a full meeting especially as some items from last year’s meetings were delayed for discussion due to low numbers attending due to COVID. A report from the meeting will be in the next Road Runner. Until then - happy motoring Nicola 7

Otago Branch Overnight Run – March 13-14th to Gore We have orgainsed another weekend away : Saturday 13th March The plan is to meet at the Mosgiel Railway Station and leave at 9.00am, with an easy drive to Mandeville using some main roads and some roads slightly off the beaten track. All roads should be seal. A morning tea and toilet stop in included. Lunch is at Mandeville and we then have several visits planned. We will stay overnight at Gore with the evening meal planned at the GORE RSA – They will have a live band and dancing during the evening. NB -RSA has also offered us their Courtesy Coach to and from our accommodation Sunday 14th March The Gore VCC Branch have their Swapmeet on Sunday morning. We are intending going there and having a look around. They also have a museum which will be open this includes clothing and items that we hope will interest the ladies. After the swapmeet, we will head back to Gore with a possible quick cuppa then head on home via the Catlins. Lunch is planned for Curio Bay then onto Owaka, Balclutha and home. All meals and accommodation are at your own expense and you will need to book your own accommodation. Organise your own motel. We can suggest the Esplanade Motels at 0800285050 or email info@esplanademotelsgore.co.nz NUMBERS ARE NEEDED FOR SATURDAY NIGHT DINNER at the Gore RSA, and the visits. Written instructions will be provided for the weekend. You are welcome to come along in any age of vehicle – Please contact either Kevin Mason 4885198, or Bryan McConachie 4530404 or at clubrooms on a Wednesday with your intentions to attend. A cost of $5.00 per vehicle will be requested to help cover costs 8

National Office Administrator – Retirement – I received an email from Julie, our hard working Administrator at National Office recently, to advise that she has retired. I have had the pleasure of working with her over my time as secretary for the branch. She was always happy to listen and sort out issues almost as soon as possible. She was a hard worker and helped with many changes within the National Office. We wish her all the best in her retirement. I understand that Management are arranging a replacement for her, and we look forward to welcoming, and supporting the new administrator, once we get details from the Management team. In the meantime, Jo continues to keep the office ticking over very efficiently. COVID 19 - We are very fortunate to be able to carry on with our planned rallies without any further Covid 19 related restrictions. NNB: Please if you are planning to enter a local event, and running late with entry forms, please contact the organizer by phone or email to let them know you are coming. LIBRARY: We have had a few members pull out of the library Roster. If you can spare a few hours on a Friday evening every 5-6 weeks please let us know. Thanks SPARE PARTS SHED: – Parts shed is usually open every Wednesday morning, and Friday evenings when the clubrooms are open. Reminder – see if you can effectively recycle your parts before scrapping them. NO TYREs by request. VIC APPLICATIONS – please note - VIC Application forms have been updated again. From National Office - completion of VEHICLE IDENTITY CARD/ AUTHENTICITY STATEMENT FORMS The VIC/Authenticity Statement forms were altered back in October 2020 with regard to the VTC needing photos of the chassis/frame number and/or engine number of vehicles. Each application you make for a vehicle MUST include these along with the 3 identical photos of the vehicle. Applications will be put on hold until these are supplied, if they do not accompany the application, when submitted to National Office. Please can you ensure that the application forms are completed fully, especially in regards to mileage, engine manufacturer, some history of the vehicle (even if it is only “purchased from Trade Me in April 1999”) and which Branch is completing the form. The Branch is often missing from Non-Member applications and my knowledge of small places in New Zealand is not that great so a Branch name would assist greatly. Obituary - Graham Dalton It is with sadness that we record the passing of Graham Dalton recently A quote here from the resume that was presented at Graham’s 50 year Award in 2005 ‘Graham joined the Otago Branch at its second meeting and was later recognised as a foundation member. He and four of his mates,. Allan Ward, Barry Mayfield, Keith Henderson and the late Eric Woodmancy - joined up, all with Model 'A' Fords. With some of these mates, he attempted the restoration of a 1913 Wolverhampton Star, but wedding bells interrupted this venture. Graham related that beginning with the initial Dunedin Brighton Run, he didn't miss a year when he wasn't marshalling at this event for the next twenty-five years. He remembered many things such as the runs to the Lee Stream Hotel and Mrs. Bramwell's delicious salmon quiche. The Invermay Hill Climbs, during one of which he took one of his A.J.S motorcycles to the top. Graham held office as scribe on the Otago Branch committee, "duplicated" the copies of the Newsletter and was also House Convenor at the Park Street premises. His interest in motor-cycles, mainly Henderson Fours and A.J. S’s led him to donate the Motor-cycle Restoration Cup which is competed for each year. He continued to take an interest in checking out Motorcycles which were being restored and always made himself available for presenting the Restoration Cup at the Branch AGM’s each year. Laterly in the company of his son. Arthritis in the hands and early retirement put an end to most of his vintage related endeavours. Despite this, Graham still took an interest in Club activities,even if it was to come out and have a look at all the vehicles lined up outside the club rooms before departing on a club rally. One Branch member quotes ‘ Graham has given sterling service to the Branch for the duration of his membership. He must hold some kind of record marshalling at trials, hill climbs, street races, motor shows and Dunedin Brighton Runs. In all of these activities he had been utterly reliable and conscientious, come rain, heat, dust or whatever. He had asked nothing in return. Grahams work and involvement with the club had been made easier with the support and patience of his wife - Dorothy.’ We offer out deepest sympathy to Dorothy and family. We will miss him, especially during the Restoration Rallies. 11

Jackson Rally Report A good number of members arrived for the Jackson Rally on the 24th of January. A week later than normal, due to the shifting of the Dunedin Brighton Run. Bill Veitch and Bruce Murray sent us off on a tour which took us up the hill past Cargill’s Castle, over to Waldronville, back into the city via Fairfield and Green Island. From there the instructions took us over to Portobello via Highcliff Road, and Centre Road and then returning to the clubrooms via the bottom road. There has been and still is a lot of road contruction happening on this road, as the area is being widened to accommodate cycle and pedestrian pathways. It will look amazing when it is completed.The run finished back at the Clubrooms for afternoon tea. Marshals Wanted Best of British 14th March – Milton Rugby Club This year due to COVID we have a couple of extra duties to complete. Along with collecting money from the members of the public / entrants that did not complete the rally part of the event on entry to the grounds we will also need to: 1. Ensure everyone checks in via the COVID tracer app or record sheet. Complete registration sheets for any entrant that did not complete one at the Ice Stadium car park. Because of this I am looking for as many marshals as possible between 9:30am – 2pm plus a couple of extra’s from 12pm – 1pm to help cover the lunch break. COAST TO COAST RUN – 12-13th June 2021 This is still being planned. We are looking at staying overnight at Haast before returning to Dunedin on Sunday. Please book your own accomodation and advise Kevin Mason of your intentions. Further details will be advised closer to the time

STRAITH TAIERI A&P show in Middlemarch Our 2021 show is scheduled for 21st of March. We would love to have a bit of a car show added to the festivities. We have a BIG show planned. If you are interested in taking part in this show, by displaying your VCC eligible vehicle please let a committee member know so that we can advise the organisers.

The WALL AUTO WHEEL A strange looking contraption designed in 1909 as a two-stroke twin but it was 1914 when the one we know was produced in quite large numbers by Arthur Wall of Birmingham. The 120cc four stroke motor with atmospheric inlet valve and side valve exhaust was mounted in a tubular subframe driving a 20-inch beaded edge spoked wheel. This unit was clamped on the right-hand side of a normal pedal cycle at the rear wheel and pivoted from the front of the unit. A single two-way lever on the handlebar controlled the throttle one way and the decompressor for starting the opposite way. So Mr Wall's invention transformed the bicycle to be power driven at around 20 mph, very popular before WW2, also during the war in Australia. The manufacturing rights were sold the USA company Smith so by 1918/19 the Smith Auto Wheel mounted on the left side with a disc wheel was an improvement on the Wall. The company we all know Briggs & Stratton ended up with the rights to this unusual design. So back 100 plus years ago we had power assist on pushbikes, it's more popular these days, so what's new -----we do it with batteries

Waimate Rally I have heard from the our members who attended this rally in Waimate recently Nevin Gough and Kelly Findlay gained 1st Veteran, 1st Overall and 1st Lady Navigator Gill and Ruth Edmunds gained 1st in the P60 section Stu and Lynn Neill – gained 1st in the PWV section They apparently enjoyed some Wallaby pies for lunch. Well done team. NB – rumour has it that Nevin and Kelly are still holidaying around the Canterbury area and will be attending another Veteran Rally there.

RE - OTAGO BRANCH HISTORY Larkworthy Street St Kilda February 2021 Hello everybody and happy New Year to you all. Hope the silly season was good to you. I bet some of you are wondering what happened to the deadline I set myself for the publication of the history. The answer to that question is it past and I missed it! A wee problem came up and to solve it I decided it was easier for me to extend the main historical narrative. So now, you are getting more value for your buck as it does not finish at 2004 but rather 2014. Sixtyyear history. No extra expense. Writing this is giving me a break from the work. Now it is a case of bringing all the other 50 or so items for the history up to 2014, slotting in photos and we should be good to go. I have told the ODT in Alexandra, who are going to print the book, FOR SALE I’m aiming for March but 1 bolt of original, quality Vintage Barring, may be earlier. fabric, depicting different veteran/ Silly me vintage cars (see photo). I spotted David Mills this yesterday in the Two Squirrels Emporium, Lower Stuart Street (2-3 doors from Moray Place). Rare and totally unique. Priced at $12.50m.
