As I write this it is time for reflection on my time as Branch Chairman and I would like to thank you all for the support shown during this time. I have certainly enjoyed my time as Chairman however after five years it is time to stand aside. The branch has achieved a lot and while I am standing down from the Chairman’s role I wish the new committee well in the endeavours ahead. The branch AGM is set down for 20 June to be preceded by the usual pot luck lunch. If you feel you have something to offer the branch please consider standing for the committee as there will be a couple of vacancies this year due to some members indicating that they will be standing down. I know that this has been said before, however the branch needs you the members to either step forward to stand for the committee or perhaps offer some assistance in any way you see fit. We are fortunate to have a willing band of helpers but as always more are welcome. I know there are members out there willing to assist. The AGM is followed by the Annual Dinner, this is set down for 17 July and will include a quiz night as part of the format - keep an eye on the magazine for further details. This has been a suggestion that we change the format to include the presentation of service awards at the annual dinner instead of during an AGM or a major branch rally such as the Dunedin – Brighton Run, Taieri Tour or Dunvegan. The committee would welcome your feedback on this as we look to set the branch calendar for the coming year. However in the meantime I look forward to seeing as many members as possible at the AGM – don’t be shy. Nicola NATIONAL RALLY FOR CANCER Sunday 22 August 2021 Our committee have discussed this day, and are hoping to be able to combine with South Otago Branch as we did in 2019. We are currently looking at suitable venues/options for a public display suitable for up to 100 vehicles and their crews. Please keep this date free as this is also an opportunity for us to showcase our branches and the National Club. If you would like to assist with the organising of this event please let a committee member know.

NNB: Please if you are planning to enter a local event, and running late with entry forms, please contact the organizer by phone or email to let them know you are coming. They need to know numbers for printing the instructions, and catering purposes for some events. LIBRARY: We have had a few members pull out of the library Roster. If you can spare a few hours on a Friday evening occasionally please let us know. Thanks SPARE PARTS SHED: – Parts shed is usually open every Wednesday morning, and Friday evenings when the clubrooms are open. Reminder – see if you can effectively recycle your parts before scrapping them. NO TYREs by request. VIC APPLICATIONS – please note - VIC Application forms have been updated – again. PLEASE CHECK THAT ALL PAPERWORK/PHOTOS ARE PRESENT AND CORRECT BEFORE FORWARDING TO YOUR BRANCH VEHICLE REGISTRAR – It gets very time consuming when we need to contact you time and again to ensure everything is sorted. The VIC/Authenticity Statement forms were altered back in October 2020 with regard to the VTC needing photos of the chassis/frame number and/or engine number of vehicles. Each application you make for a vehicle MUST include these along with the 3 identical photos (correct size) of the vehicle. Applications will be put on hold until these are supplied, if they do not accompany the application, when submitted to National Office. Please can you ensure that the application forms are completed fully, especially in regards to mileage, engine manufacturer, some history of the vehicle (even if it is only “purchased from Trade Me in April 1999”) and which Branch is completing the form. The Branch is often missing from Non-Member applications and my knowledge of small places in New Zealand is not that great so a Branch name would assist greatly. Kind Regards Jo VCC National Office 8

ROADWORKS AROUND THE CLUBROOMS
There are still road works happening around the clubrooms. Just beware of the parking situation, as access to Bayview Road from Forbury Road is closed at present. ENTERTAINMENT BOOK - Digital version’s for the coming year are now available for sale via our branch. The branch gets a contribution from the sale of each book, which helps towards running costs of our clubrooms. If you would like one please get in touch with your branch secretary – Marion McConachie My Vintage - www.myvintage.co.nz is a new online marketplace devoted to all those people who are passionate and enthusiastic about Old Cars and other old vehicles. Correspondence – a note from our UK Sports Car Club - In corresponding with the Vintage Sports-Car Club in the UK recently (as a result of their getting their magazine (meant for Otago Branch) returned ‘address unknown’ I sent them an email advising of our change of address and wished them well with the challenges that Covid 19 had imposed on them – I got this reply. ‘We have had a bit of a chaotic time with working from home, furlough etc and we are finding that a few things have been missed along the way. Thank you for your kind words; we have struggled with Covid here but fortunately the vaccination programme is rolling out very successfully so hopefully we will see some normality soon. Within the last fortnight we have had the Exmoor and Herefordshire Trials and the Silverstone Spring Start race meeting, all without spectators of course but at least it’s progress. Hopefully it won’t be too long before we are welcoming spectators back to some of our events’. 9
North Otago Gerald Lynch-Blosse Rally 2021
It was with slight trepidation that I completed the entry form for the 2021 Gerald Lynch-Blosse Memorial Motorcycle Rally because last year this rally had been so unceremoniously derailed. So, with a simple dab of the send button, we were on our way so to speak. There was an excellent turnout of 29 entries for the rally and another good representation from 9 of our branch members. The day from kick off was a bluebird one, straight out of the box. Beginning with a strapping morning tea. After a yarn from Robert Hutton about safety, road conditions and corrections to the route we were soon all on our way. The rally took us out the back of Weston, Cormack’s and Kia Ora then back East round Totara and past the old Teshmakers college and off down to the Kakanui area. Happy Valley road bought us out on HW1 and then south towards Herbert and Wainakarua. Next came my favourite stretch back out and up the open sea coast road to eventually wend our way back inland towards the Maheno Tavern for lunch. Lunch was the understatement. The pub turned on a sit-down door stopper with all the trimmings leaving some just wanting a wee nap in the shade from the hot sun to finish off. The afternoon run took us back inland via the beautiful farmlands of outback Oamaru and a wee bit of gravel for the purists towards Five Forks. From here it was on out towards Tokarahi and a in a big loop right back to Ngapara – Elderslie, Enfield and Weston. Our Cooks tour bought us right back down the Devils Bridge road and home to the club rooms for afternoon tea and a catch up on who got what right and in what time. We have been a bit spoiled lately with our outings. The South Otago run down to Niagara set a pretty high bench mark for turnouts, mapping, scenery, weather, catering and comradeship. Not wanting to outdo each other I’m sure, but the North Otago branch are equal to the task of hosting a fantastic motorcycling day out and a credit to the organisation of all who help make our day one to write home about. Need to be aware of busy road and road works CORRESPONDENCE – Nil CHAIRPERSONS REPORT – - Was tabled and read Summing up the past year can be easily split into two parts - before lockdown and after lockdown.

CHAIRPERSONS REPORT –continued August was the annual VCC National Day which is linked in with the club’s chosen charity being the Cancer Society. Last year we joined with our neighbours in South Otago for a combined event in Waihola after which the suggestion was made to continue with this format however move to Milton where there is more room. Unfortunately, lockdown put plans for this on hold however there may still be time to organise another event albeit on a smaller scale. This was the first of a few combined branch events as since then we have joined South Otago for their Christmas Run and Fruit Run to Roxburgh. The Taieri Tour in November was held on a brilliant warm day and saw entrants cris-crossing the Taieri before ending up at the Outram Rugby Club for field tests and lunch. Travis and Ross organised a fantastic run which included letter boards, cryptic clues and a silent check to see how many of us actually stopped at the stop sign. The field tests were also a mixture of old and new to keep everyone on their toes. There was another good turnout for the annual Christmas BBQ held once again at the club rooms where members were able to take advantage of the relaxed atmosphere and unwind before the hectic Christmas season. The annual Brighton Rally was also held on a sunny day. We may have had our issues leading up to event, none more so than the mayor not being available to flag the vehicles away however I’m sure we can all agree that Councillor Lee Van der Vis made up for this with his enthusiasm and flair. During March a few of our members took part in the Bi Annual South Island Club Captains Tour which saw them traverse some roads in the South Island that they have not been on previously. Unfortunately, the event was affected at the end as it coincided with the lead in to lockdown however, I’m sure they are all looking forward to the next tour. Our monthly speakers were well supported last winter and now that the club rooms are open again hopefully, we can get these back up and running again. Please let us know if you are interested in giving or know someone who would like to give a presentation on a Friday night it could be on a restoration project, career talk (current or previous) or a holiday. The choice of topics are endless. David Mills has been beavering away of the branch history and is close to having the first 50 years going to print. His plan is for the book to be ready for Christmas 2020 so look out for your copy. During the 2018/2019 year we received a grant from the Masonic Lodge to allow us to build a new fence between the neighbours and the driveway to the rear of the building. The committee also arranged for a new club sign to be attached to the front of the building to compliment the smaller sign and highlight who we are. This coming year is the final year of my current 3-year term and will be my 5th year as the branch chairman. While I have enjoyed leading the branch, I will be standing down at the next AGM so I am giving you all fair notice that you will need to look for another member to take on the Chairman’s role. My thanks to the committee for their work and support over the past year it has been a pleasure to work with you. My thanks also to the members who have helped out during the year - Christmas BBQ, Marshalling at the Best of British or maintaining the property both inside and out it is greatly appreciated. Nicola

FINANCIAL REPORT David Ross tabled his report, which forms part of these minutes plus gave a brief explanation on how to read it. National fees have increased. Interest rates are dropping, Rates, water and power bills are all increasing. Arising Maintainence of building continues as required Club rooms roof – Bob Oakley – last year we raised the issue of the state of the roof. B. Veitch it is estimated that a new roof would cost upwards of $30,000 – D. Ross financially at present we should be able to replace the roof but don’t want to put increased pressure on the club finances at present Branch Levy – $17.66 profit this year. Donation received from Otago Rally, Postage has increased, Rates have increased along with land value. A lot of speculation in setting the budget. If we increase Levy by $5 how many members do we loose? Policy is to make rallies pay for themselves. After some discussion D. Ross moved ‘that we increase the branch levy to $40.00’ 2nd B. Campion - carried PROPERTY REPORT Bill Veitch verbally reported: Painters reported that roof is a bit shaky- thanks to branch members we have been able to stablise it for the time being. Bruce Christie took on the task of coordinating the construction of the boundary fence. Fortunate to have members assisting with maintenance of the property and grounds. Bruce Christie as supplied a lockable mailbox for the clubrooms – post address is now changed Concrete being arranged to repair a section of the drive Bill Veitch moved “ that the property report be accepted” seconded Kevin Mason – carried. HOUSE MANAGERS REPORT Bill Partel tabled his report – Thanks to Alistair Drummond who supports me with Bar Duties. The Wednesday morning group of club members who assist with maintaining the clubrooms and grounds is much appreciated. George Martin and his team of helpers do a sterling job for our parts department. Also Bruce Murray and Kevin Mason for looking after the lawns. Thanks also to David Ross, Alistair Drummond, and Sue Partel for a welcoming atmosphere in the clubrooms for special occasions. GENERAL BUSINESS Pending Roadworks – B. Wilkinson suggested that due to pending roadworks around the clubrooms, that a chain go up across the carpark entrance – S. Campion supported this. A few years ago DCC weren’t supporting the event. Now DCC has reduced funding for this over recent years. D. Ross - suggests that the DCC were reminded how the Dunedin to Brighton Run started, their involvement, we are running an event that they started. M. Wilkinson have been working with C. Winter and discussion is not entered into. Databases were changed. Mayor did not know the event existed. Will get Lee Vander Vis back next year. Have to do a H & S plan. To tell the DCC the history they do not care. New generation of people, only interested in the all over roading. Personally wouldn’t start from Octagon. Stu Neil – suggest approaching Sir Julian re an article in ODT to publicise what effects the Brighton Run – use the media - it is early enough to do this. Bob Oakley – M.Haggitt and he started the 1st run Evening Star took it to Len Wright. No VCC branch at that stage – worked with AA Otago with support from the City Council. The Run started from Tahuna Park. C. Winter and M. Wilkinson asked how important is it to start in the Octagon? B. Woodford indicated that it would be sad to see it go away from the Octagon. Oakley – don’t stop at Octagon. Pearce – 1st church good for time - show of hands indicated more support for start at First Church and bypass the Octagon. GARAGE RAID 24 ARIL 2021 GARAGE ONE: The day dawned fine and 24 Garage Raiders gathered at the Clubrooms. After collecting their directions and a briefing from me, we headed off to our first of three garage raids – first to Trevor and Dot Johnson’s at Ravensboune. The first shed Trevor opened has an immaculate 6-110 Wolseley 110. It is his first British car and a stunning example of a complete restoration done by the previous owner. From there we went into one of the two largest sheds, - containing three Hudsons, two in various stages of restoration. The second shed had six beautiful Hudsons – very nice – plus on the shelves are Trevor’s collection of items including from his time in the Police – batons, handcuffs and Sergeants stripes etc. This is where we had our lunch break. After thanking Dot and Trevor for their hospitality we were off to the next Garage. GARAGE TWO: was at Tony and Jane Devereux’s on Jeffcoates Road where Tony had on display two beautiful Packards, and two Dodge cars in the first garage. One Dodge was a red 1960 convertible nicely presented – it used to be Tony’s daily commuter to his place of work. Parked behind one of the Packards was Jane’s contribution to the garage – two motorbikes. Nice to see you flying the flag for bikes Jane! The property used to milk cows. One of the buildings Tony showed us used to be the Head Milker’s living accommodation – very small, everything in the single room building. even the complete fireplace and the chimney. Looking at the dwelling from outside you could see nothing of the chimney except when it came out of the roof – a very rare building to see. Today it is a museum with information about the property and trophies Tony has collected for his vehicles. The house and ground are beautiful. Where you park your, car the walk down the path to the house (sorry -missed what date it was built) past big Oak trees is really nice – a credit to Jane and Tony. When they bought the property there was no electricity – only candles (no lights) so the power was brought up the hill held up with poles with their own name tags on each pole, which are recorded somewhere - if a pole fails it is Tony and Jane’s problem. Thank you Jane and Tony for your hospitality. GARAGE THREE: was at Colin and Carol Venable’s on Brighton Road. I counted six sheds and garages all containing vehicles of all shapes and sizes and states of restoration. They included Rambler, Nah, big M.M. truck bodies, Ford pickup trucks. In the main shed are Corvettes, Jaguar, Holden and Land Rover. One the walls holds signs of all shapes and stickers of different brands of products. Also, two Jeep peddle cars, an Austin peddle car with an Austin badge on the bonnet – a nice little example. A collection of transistor and electric radios. On another wall are two glass cabinets with small cars, bulldozers, graders, trucks, model aeroplane and boat engines, and a whole lot of other stuff on display. Whilst trying to take it all in, Carol arrived with afternoon tea – freshly baked scones with jam and cream, fruit cake, biscuits, tea and coffee. After a very big thank you to our hosts, we headed home about 4 pm. Thank you to our 24 garage raiders. Thank you for your wonderful hospitality Trevor and Dot, Tony and Jane, Colin and Carol. For those of you who pre-registered for the festival you will have already received this email, but we know there's a few of you who haven't yet registered.

This will be a fantastic evening of entertainment and socialising as we officially draw the festival to a close, tickets are worth $70 each. Two qualify for the draw you need to have registered in full and paid your registration fee by 30 June 2020. The winner will be announced in our July newsletter. (If you are selected as the winner and have already paid for your finale tickets we will refund your payment.)
Sorry no cheques… You will note that we have stipulated “no cheque payment” of registration fees. We fully understand and sympathise that some VCCNZ members may find this stipulation rather inconvenient. In our defense this has been forced upon us by many Banks no longer issuing or accepting cheques. As the Vero IFHM bank account is with TSB who have advised they will shortly be refusing to accept the banking of cheques, we have no option. For those members who will find this rather difficult we suggest that Club members assist, however you are able, those who are unable to make payment by internet banking or Credit Card. 20
A Message from our VCCNZ President The Vintage Car Club of New Zealand (“VCC”) has a proud history of organising extremely successful International Rallies, each one uniquely showcasing a particular area of New Zealand and I know that the Vero International Festival of Historic Motoring 2022 will continue with the high standards of previous years. The Taranaki area delivers a wide range of visitor experiences, there’ll be plenty for you to see and do before, during and after the Festival. There is plenty of accommodation within walking distance of the venue which is also right next door to Pukekura Park and the renowned Festival of Lights. The VCC is New Zealand’s foremost historic motoring authority and the Festival will be a true motoring experience catering for a wide range of vehicles and their capabilities. Once again Vero are generously supporting the event. To our overseas friends, whether you have attended in the past or are considering your first time, we would love to see you in 2022 and I can promise you a warm Kiwi welcome and a unique experience. I have much pleasure in extending an invitation to all VCC members and overseas friends to enter and take part in our Club’s most iconic event. Gravel or no gravel?
Aside from finalising the registration form, we have been busy double checking the route instructions and to cater for those who want either, no gravel or those who can’t get enough, we have good news for both camps. We are here to please! Where there is gravel, we have endeavoured to provide an alternative sealed deviation to the route rejoining shortly after. The price of not touring over the gravelled section is of course missing out on some of the more attractive parts of the route.

Restoration Rally Report – 16th May 2021
A calm sunny day provided a good number of members the opportunity to bring their vehicles out for a short afternoon run, as well as being able to view four cars and a motorbike, which have been restored and put back on the road over the past year. The vehicles up for judging were Basil and Greg North’s Model T, Paddy Williams Lago Talbot, Bob Herron’s Model A and Trevor Mattingly’s Morris 10/4, and then Bruce Christie’s AJS Motorcycle. These owners were encouraged to come a little earlier so that the judges had time to check them over. So, they took the opportunity to have BYO lunch in the clubrooms, and catch up with other members. Once judging was over, they joined 11 more of our branch vehicles, and members on a tour around the northern part of city, with some great views as they navigated around the southern part of the Peninsula. Afternoon tea was ready for everyone once they returned to the clubrooms. Our branch chairperson then presented Restoration Achievement Certificates to those who put their vehicles up for judging.
