Obituaries Sadly we advise that Mollie Anderson, Life Member of the VCC and wife of our founding President Andrew Anderson, passed away at her home on 30 April 2020 in her 91st year. Mollie was a founding influence of the Vintage Car Club and was, among other things, editor of the first VCC newsletter, the "Guff Sheet". A memorial gathering will be held when Covid-19 Alert Level guidelines permit. Messages to Andrew Anderson, 428 Mound Road, RD2, Amberley, 7482. Those members who meet him at Wednesday morning sessions as well as the odd car rally can recall his keen interest in vintage motoring. 6
The “new normal� at present means that we are learning to adapt at a rapid pace to the evolving changes. Marion took the opportunity during lockdown to check in with members that we did not have up to date email addresses for and we now have approximately 95% of our members on the email database so we can email updates to you as they happen. The branch committee took advantage of the level 2 requirements to meet at the club rooms to discuss when we can look to resume meetings, rallies etc. Instead of cramming into the library we met in the Michael Haggitt Lounge and all sat at individual tables 2 metres apart. The branch treasurer presented us with a draft profit and loss based on the branch closure and I am happy to report that while we have not had any income from the bar, parts or rallies, any potential loss to the branch will be negligible. Working on the numbers that attend the majority of branch events (excluding our major rallies) we have decided that the club rooms will re-open when we are allowed to have gatherings of 50 or more. At that stage and as per the past two years the Friday club nights will be on winter hours until the beginning of September which means that the club nights will be on the first Friday and last Friday of the months. The committee will be arranging guest speakers for the last Friday of the month so look out for notification and come along as if last year is to go by, we had a wide variety of topics and good attendances. There are sanitisers located beside both outside doors plus the door to the lounge for you to use. There is also a Contact Register located just inside the side door which needs to be completed each and every time. Due to Covid 19, the government has given clubs dispensation to postpone AGMs if required. While we had hoped that we would still be able to hold the branch AGM in June, the committee has decided to delay the meeting until July by which stage we anticipate that the restrictions will have eased and more members will feel more comfortable in venturing out. The pot luck lunch usually held prior to the AGM has been cancelled along with the annual dinner. Last month I advised that the Restoration Rally would be cancelled for 2020 however the committee has decided that we would instead postpone this until August. All criteria for the event remains the same so please let Marion know if you were planning on entering a vehicle The Restoration Cup will be presented that afternoon during the tea break. Thank you to members who have put pen to paper and provided an article for the Roadrunner. It would be really great to get some more stories - good, bad, ugly and outrageous for the Roadrunner. These can be anonymous if you don’t want to put our name to it. Looking forward to reading some of these. Just reading through some of the other Branch newsletters: Gore Branch advise that the National Veteran Rally 2020 to be hosted by them in October, is still in the planning stages. The branch will confirm if it is still going ahead by the end of June. Also the Gore Branch report on their Festival Rally held just before lockdown - which saw three of our branch members gain placings in the event. Overall Winner, P60 Field Test Winner and P60 Time Trial Runner up went to Peter and Esmey Fletcher in their 1963 Hillman Super Minx. Veteran Time Trial Winner was Colin and Joan Pearce in their 1914 Sunbeam and Veteran Field Tests Winner was Nevin Gough and his crew in their 1914 Buick. RESTORATION RALLY - PLANNED FOR A LATER DATE Contact Branch Secretary if you have a vehicle to put forward As noted in the Chairperson’s report - the committee have agreed to go ahead with the Restoration Rally at a time when it is safe to do so. The Trophy will also be presented on the day of the event. NB: if you have a VCC eligible vehicle that has been put back on the road over the past year and would like to present it for consideration for the Trophy please contact the branch secretary with details - Information was printed in the April Roadrunner. Beaded Wheels April/May edition You will all have received your printed April/May edition of Beaded Wheels. It is planned that the June/July issue will be sent out two weeks later than normal – around the middle of June. Newsletters for all New Zealand Branches All branch newsletters are available to read on the VCC website. I do get them all emailed to me each month, but I do not see the point of forwarding them on to everyone, when you know that they are available to see on the website. It is then up to you to chase them if you want to have a look at them. Entry forms and other relevant information from other branches will however still be forwarded on to you via email. Vero International Festival of Historic Motoring 2022 The new dates for the Vero International Festival of Historic Motoring in New Plymouth have been finalised as Sunday 16th January to Friday 21st January 2022 so now is the time to get your accommodation bookings changed or finalised. 8
Upcoming Events at other branches - Entry Forms If you would like a copy of entry forms for events that are happening elsewhere. There should be a copy in the clubrooms or contact me for a copy. I have a pile of different ones at the moment as we head into a busy few months of motoring. Entries usually close within two weeks of the event. Library Roster: We have had a few members pull out of the library Roster. If you can spare a few hours on a Friday evening every 5-6 weeks please let us know. Thanks. VIC Applications – please note - VIC Application forms have been updated - again. When completing these forms please ensure that you have the most up to date form titled Sept 2019 – Check the VCC website. – These continue to be updated as procedures change etc. NNB: Please if you are planning to enter a local event, and running late with entry forms, please contact the organizer by phone or email to let them know you are coming. They need to know numbers for printing the instructions, and catering purposes for some events. Spare Parts Shed – Parts shed is usually open every Wednesday morning, and Friday evenings when the clubrooms are open. Reminder – see if you can effectively recycle your parts before scrapping them. NO TYREs by request. The nearest AED defibrillator to the clubrooms is on the outside wall of the 4 Square shop on corner of Bayview Road. Please make a point of familiarising yourself of its location – Never know when it might be needed. TARGA 2020 TIME TRIAL - Hi VCC Branches, We're still very much on track for the Targa 2020 VCC Time Trial in October. We've also restarted promotion for this event, with new adverts to appear in next issues of both NZ Classic Car, (June issue 354, on-sale from 25th May), and VCC Beaded Wheels, (June/July issue 364, available mid June). entries are safe for the future. 1. Supplementary Regs: We're currently updating our Supplementary Regs for 2020. These will be available when Targa have confirmed all special & touring stages for the event. Regards ,Rod Corbett, VCC Steward Wheel Torque - Expired WOF’s, Regos, and licences extended As we drop down the Covid-19 Alert Levels, classic and vintage vehicle owners have a concessionary period to catch up with the paperwork that expired while they were locked away. Emergency legislation passed in April granted six months extensions to all WoFs and CoFs, and driver licences, that expired on or after 1 January 2020. The legislative changes also allow temporary suspension of the requirement to have a current vehicle licence if it expired on or after 1 January 2020. But if a vehicle licence (rego) has lapsed, the owner will still be required to pay the fees for the entire period it remains expired. While exempted from prosecution for driving with an expired WoF, rego or drivers licence that ran out after 1 January, documents that expired prior to that remain non-compliant and subject to potential enforcement action. When the Alert Level 4 restrictions were imposed in response to the invasion of Covid-19, it became impossible or impractical for most people to take their vehicles in for periodic in-service inspections and certification, or renew driver licences and endorsements.
The emergency legislation was passed in April to allow vehicles to still be operated lawfully with expired documents, and for drivers to remain licensed and use their endorsements during this time. Other vehicle certifications issued under the Vehicle Standards Compliance Rule which expired on or after 1 January 2020, including alternative fuel inspection certificates, permits authorising use of vehicles with conditions, and heavy vehicle specialist certifications of towing connections, and log bolster attachments are extended too. As are endorsements (including drivers with passenger endorsements and dangerous good endorsements held by some truck drivers) that expired on or after 1 March 2020. While the extension was for a maximum of 6 months (to around 10 October), the NZ Transport Agency can shorten this with notification. It was recognised that after two to three months of no activity there will be excess pressure on testing stations and garages to catch up with resulting high demand for inspections and repairs. Another factor is reduced access to prompt provision of replacement parts, especially from overseas suppliers, following the shutdown of air and sea freight services from a range of countries. However, we encourage owners not to wait until October to renew their WoFs or vehicle licences. It is important to note that the extensions only apply to the laws that require a valid WoF or rego to be displayed. Vehicles must still be in a safe and roadworthy condition. COVID 19 As the country slowly moves from Covid level 2 to level 1 the Branch can start looking at opening up the clubrooms and planning Rallies again. The following events can start up again now. But if the situation changes and the Level’s need to raised again these events will need to be postponed. The committee will endeavour to keep you informed of any changes via email if we need too.
Clubrooms opening hours during winter The clubrooms will only be open on the 1st and last Friday during the months of June, July and August. The library will also be open on those evenings. We also plan to have a guest speaker on the last Friday of each month.
Wednesday mornings – the clubrooms are now open – please be aware that you still need to follow the Covid 19 requirements. There is hand sanitizer available and register that needs to be completed every time you visit the club rooms. Also remember
social distancing. Look out for each other. NB: If you are not well do not attend any events at the clubrooms
THURSDAY MID WEEK RUN 25th June 2020 As the 25th of June is mid year - we would like to look at a lunch time run. Please let your branch secretary know if you are keen to do a lunch run, so that a venue can be arranged. Plan would be to depart Dunedin/Mosgiel by 11am for a short drive to lunch stop.
If the country moves to level one next week the branch would like to offer members the opportunity to get your vehicles out and go for a drive. It is being planned for Sunday 21st June and looking at going to a cafĂŠ for afternoon tea. An email will be sent out to confirm those details once moving to Level 1 is confirmed. **************************************************

Rallying set to resume in the South Island - Otago Sports Car Club A rally calendar of up to eight events has been planned for the latter half of 2020, with some popular events set to run. With COVID-19 restrictions starting to be slowly eased, event organisers are keen to provide competitors with the proposed event dates, in order for them to start planning which events they'll contest. All events are subject to restrictions around the virus being eased to the point that events can take place, and some events are dependant on discussions with forestry owners. "The final event of the year will be the popular Lawrence Clubman rally, comprising 80km of competition over 5 stages – some of which will be the same roads planned for this year’s Otago Rally," Otago Sports Car Club's Norman Oakley said. "The stages will be used again next year when the full New Zealand Rally Championship gets back underway. Planning is already well underway for the 2021 Otago Rally." Some events (Catlins, Hanmer, South Canterbury and Canterbury) will be rounds of the Mainland Series, which started in March at Greymouth with the Westland Rally. It remains the only event to be run in New Zealand so far this year. The Lawrence Rally will be a backup event for the Mainland Series should one of the rallies above not be able to be held.

What I did in the lockdown: by Trevor Kempton A year ago I bought my latest rebuild/restoration project; a 1972 GT380 Suzuki. One of the few with a drum brake. I enjoy my GT750. Nothing smoother than a 120 degree three cylinder two stroke on song. So the GT380 seemed a natural choice. It’s a very well used and abused example, ‘stored’ for 20 years (most of this outside I’m guessing) repainted black with a yard broom at some point, all the chrome a fetching ferrous colour, alloy ‘rejuvenated’ by Dulux, half an inch of oil and dirt coating the undercarriage and a motor which doesn’t turn over. What on earth could go wrong? The last day before lockdown and off to Bunnings to buy more shelving, on which to store the parts as they came off. Before I can get at the motor, Ram air shrouds, side cases, etc come off. Well, that’s after I have to “easyout” most of the screws which have had the heads flogged out by overzealous tightening with the wrong sized bit in a god damned power wrench! A number of stripped bolts has me thinking that this guy didn’t own a torque wrench but swung on the spanner until the bolt stripped then backed off a quarter of a turn. Head and barrels off with only modest application of the rubber hammer and all is revealed. Crank cases full of oil and one bent connecting rod jammed hard against the flywheel. Amazingly the piston and small end are intact and but for a little mechanical scuffing on the piston skirt it will do another turn. A roller has fallen out of the big end bearing and has scored the crankcase a little too. As my dad used to say, the most important part of fixing something is to work out what caused the problem. Hmmm…. Gearbox has little oil in it, auto-lube tank near empty. All crankcases equally full but interconnected to evenly distribute excess oil supposedly to stop ‘em smoking. Gearbox internals in excellent nick so there was oil there before the bike was abandoned. Stuff in the crankcases looked and tasted like gearbox oil. Crankcase seals stuffed so I’m picking a very slow leak from the clutch housing through the outside crank seal. It all gets a bit speculative from here but a new battery sits in the remnants of the battery box. Someone has tried to kick life into the motor and I think it started! One cylinder pumps a bit more efficiently than the others and 20ml or so of oil is flicked up the transfers as the piston is heading upwards. The unstoppable meets the immovable and the conrod takes it for the team. The 120 degree firing pattern keeps the engine going, the oil is fired out the exhaust and 100 revs or so later the key is turned off because the motor now sounds decidedly peg-legged and the perpetrator is near asphyxiated by the exhaust smoke. The taking apart is a journey of discovery but I am still phase 1. The initial enthusiasm hasn’t yet turned into disillusionment but I’ll keep you posted.

Theresa Wallach Motorcyclist
Born in 1909 Theresa spent most of her life in the UK. It was 1935 when she and a friend road a 600cc Panther sidecar outfit together with trailer from London to Cape Town across the Sahara desert with no compass. At just 18 she dismantled an engine in her bedroom and at about this time she won a scholarship to study engineering at the University of London, the only woman to do so. She took up motorcycle racing and in 1939 gained the Motorcycle Club Gold Star award for lapping Brooklands at more than 100 MPH on a 350cc Norton. During WW2 Theresa became a dispatch rider and in 1942 became the first female tank mechanic. She also wrote a number of books one of her trip The Rugged Road. For 2 1/2 years she rode 32,000 miles in the USA, Canada, and Mexico, at times working as an aircraft mechanic and dishwasher to support herself. Back home in 1952 she found a depressed economy and returned to the US, working in Chicago as a motorcycle mechanic, sometime later opening her own shop specialising in British bikes. Giving tuition to many of her purchasing clients it was an opportunity to open a new venture, Easy Riding Academy giving hundreds of riders advice on safe riding. Her book in 1972, Easy Motorcycle Riding was a top seller. In a 1977 interview she summed up in a quote - “When I first saw a motorcycle I got a message from it. Motorcycling is a tool with which you can accomplish something meaningful in your life, it is an art.” Theresa never owned a car, continued riding until the age of 88. when vision problems forced her to give up her licence. She died on the 30th April 1999, her 90th birthday. Bill Veitch

I received a message today via the Otago Branch Facebook page from Kelvin Broad. His father was a Riley enthusiast and is in the process of downsizing due to illness. The father has a complete set of Beaded Wheels dating from 1968 through to today that he is wanting to get rid of "some compensation would be appreciated". The magazines will need to be picked up from his address in Dunedin. Kelvin believes that they will be in "spotless condition".
