Our club rooms are in Levin approximately one and half hours north of Wellington. We have great country roads to motor on. To help us plan for this event can you please ask your members if they intend to come. If you could let me know the numbers that would be a great help for our planning. In the Driving Seat Thirteen entrants from Otago travelled up to Ashburton last month to participate in the South Island Easter Rally and enjoy the hospitality of the Ashburton branch. Saturday was a brilliant day - a bit chilly at the start however turned out fine at the lunch venue which was at Mt Hutt College in Methven. The entertainment that night was “It’s in the Boot” - a take off from It’s in the Bag. Unfortunately Sunday was the complete opposite with rain most of the day which made for a quick re-think by the organisers. That night was the prize giving and congratulations to Peter and Lesley Laing for winning the Commercial section and Mark Wilkinson for coming third in the Pride of Ownership Award. Our trip home on Easter Monday unfortunately took a lot longer than we had hoped as the Mini broke down just north of Glenavy and we spent over two hours on the side of the road waiting for the AA to arrive. Spending that length of time on what was a reasonably straight piece of road certainly gave us a lesson in bad driving with the number of near miss accidents from inpatient motorists travelling in both directions trying to move through the queues of cars. Thank you Bryan and Marion for stopping to check if you could help get us back on the road again. Thanks to a couple of local branch members the Mini is now going again so we were able to compete last weekend on the Restoration Rally. This should have been named the roundabout rally as the route was designed to take us around some of the new roundabouts installed in the city. While this particular event is designed to show case new restorations in the branch the rally is open to all members and is a great way to give our vehicles a final run before the winter months. The branch AGM is on the 16th June preceded by a pot luck lunch. During the AGM we will be finalising the branch calendar for the coming year and will be looking for volunteers to help organise some of the branch rallies alongside a more experienced member. As mentioned last month under the current constitution only half of the positions on the committee will be open for election. If you are interested in being involved in the management of the branch however not sure what this actually entails - have a chat to any of the current committee, I sure they would welcome your questions. The 2019 Prince Henry Tour
Three days of Veteran motoring from Dunedin to Timaru, starting with an evening meal on Sunday 13th of October. 14th, 15th, 16th are touring days, and the 17th is a rest day to prepare for the National Veteran Rally - which begins on the 18th of October. Targa 2019 Time Trial
When: Monday 28th October to Saturday 2nd Nov 2019. Where: Central & Lower/Mid North Island – Refer Draft Event Programme. What & Why: Outstanding opportunity for VCC members to drive iconic North Island roads as a time trial. This is not a race, but rather an exercise in safe, precise driving to maintain a set average speed over closed tarmac stages. (Similar to a regularity trial). It’s also a great opportunity for VCC branches to raise public awareness of the VCC & hopefully attract some new & younger members. Cost: Substantial 30% discount of standard entry fee for VCC members with VCC/VIC eligible cars = $4,790 reduced to $3,353 + Medical Levy & RallySafe. (All entry fees are + GST). Mid Week Runs The last Run was held on Anzac Day. It was good to see some other members, who are normally at work on a Thursday, come to this run. The group enjoyed a picnic afternoon tea at the Portobello Domain, in Sunshine. The group are planning a Lunch time run on 27th June probably about an hours drive away. Please advise Marion with numbers asap so that a suitable venue can be booked.

Library Update - We need someone to help with sorting through
all the parts manuals we have please. We do not want to be disposing of anything that might still be of significance. Library is open on Wednesday mornings and Friday nights.
National Rally for Cancer - National VCC Club event to help
raise the profile of our club. This will be coming up again late August. The committee is discussing various options of activities, advertising and venues for this event. If anyone has some suggestions/ thoughts these would be gratefully aired. Please discuss with a committee member.
From the April Club Night Meeting - At the monthly meeting we
asked for a recommendation from the 15 members on whether to replace the flue for the fire place or remove and cap the roof. We needed to have a decision ASAP so we could take advantage of the scaffolding before it is removed. After a bit of discussion Ross Matthews moved that we remove the fire box and flue and cap the roof and ceiling. This was seconded by Bill and passed by majority vote of 13 -
Another Veteran Vehicle has been added to our branch fleet. I guess that instead of seeing Travis Michelle as a Marshall in the Octa-
gon during the Dunedin to Brighton Runs, he will be an entrant in future. Looks like he has been working on a 1917 Moon Car. We look forward to seeing it out and about in the future.

Planned for the last Friday of each month: • Mark Wilkinson speaking on Trusts, Power of Attorney etc end of June. • Neil Gamble speaking about his eligible cars at the end of July. • Stuart Hewson might be available to give a talk on the Manapouri Dam - he used to work there and also has a 1/2 hour DVD on the scheme. Date to be confirmed We would like to hear from anyone else who would like to speak about their hobbies etc for about 30 – 45 mins - then we can set a date for you.

NNB: Please if you are planning to enter a local event, and running late with entry forms, please contact the organizer by phone or email to let them know you are coming. They need to know numbers for printing the instructions, and catering purposes for some events.
Spare Parts Shed – Parts shed is usually open every Wednesday morning, and Friday evenings when the clubrooms are open. Reminder – see if you can effectively recycle your parts before scrapping them. NO TYREs by request.

Wilkinson MATTERS ARISING – Hole in the Wall – Per article in Roadrunner – Will not put hole in the wall, leaving it to the Parts Department team to discuss and come back to committee with resolution. CORRESPONDENCE – Locomobile Report 2018 – tabled by M Wilkinson On behalf of Sir Julian Smith I would like to table the update on the Locomobile Project After 18 long year the project has been completed The vehicle is now licensed and has a current warrant of fitness Has a ‘Low Volume Vehicle Certification Plate’ attached Sir Julian has spent a considerable amount of time recently ensuring that the Locomobile could be complied and was the result of some modifications, engineering reports and representation to Land Transport New Zealand. The next issues for the Trustees of the Locomobile is to arrange training on the machine and an official launch with supplement in the paper. The timing of this will be advised. Mark Wilkinson on behalf of Sir Julian Smith Arising - Sir Julian has given notice of $333.06 for cost of certification. N Wilkinson / C Winter carried M. Eunson – asked what are we getting out of this? It was advised that the trust would cover costs of Registration etc. The Trust will keep pushing for place to store the vehicle. Possibly Toitu, Gasworks or club rooms.

CHAIRPERSONS REPORT – as reported in July 18 Roadrunner Once again I feel privileged to have served as the branch chairman for the past year and would like to thank all committee members for their work and support. For those who are choosing not to re stand - it has been a pleasure working with you. As always, there are members working outside of the committee for the betterment of the branch and I would like to thank you for the valuable work you do. The past year has been one mixed with some sense of achievement yet tinged with sadness especially with the passing Barry who was an active member right up to the time of his passing. The two notices of motions past at last year’s AGM have now been ratified by the National Executive and lodged with the Incorporated Societies Office. The register of assets has been collated and is with the Trophy register. I am pleased to report the for the time being the Longstaffe Motorbike and sidecar is to remain in situ over the bar and at Darryl’s request a plaque has been made advising of the history of the bike and ownership. The upcoming election of officers is the first under the new format. This year all positions are up for election. Half of the committee will be elected for a 2-year term while the others will have a 1 year term and their positions will be up for election again next year. Once in-bedded this will allow for continuity however also hopefully encourage new blood and ideas onto the committee. Preparing these two notices for ratification highlighted the need to keep our constitution relevant to the changing needs of the branch. The Notice of Motion that we are voting on today is for that very reason. This coming year marks a major milestone for our branch as not only is it the 65 th Annual Dunedin - Brighton Car Rally but also the 65th Anniversary of our branch so in closing my thanks to all branch members for your continued membership and participation - it is what makes our branch. I look forward to helping the branch continue to move forward, I also thank members for their confidence in nominating me for another year in this office. FINANCIAL REPORT David Ross tabled his report, which forms part of these minutes plus gave a brief explanation on how to read it. Branch Levy – D. Ross reported that based on this report, we should be able to keep the Levy at $35 David Ross moved “ that the financial report – subject to Auditors approval - be accepted” Seconded B. Veitch - carried Arising A big maintenance programme coming up. With windows needing repairs and the outer buildings needing painting. Dunvegan Funds - C. Winter wished to clarify that profits from the Dunvegan Rally will be carried over to future rallies Dunedin Brighton Run Funds - C. Winter wished to clarify that the excess from the Grant for the Dunedin Brighton Run $1,500.00 be carried forward to next years event. Internet Banking – D. Ross indicated that Entries for Main Rallies can be paid by Internet banking. But prefers that for the smaller $5 events that these be paid for prior too or on the day of the event. A reminder that entry forms for all events are a requirement.

PROPERTY REPORT Bill Veitch verbally reported: that the costs for painting, scaffolding and window repairs will be very high. Roof at this stage is still okay but would cost approximately $20,000 to reroof. Branch members work well with keeping other maintenance/work up to date on Wednesday mornings. Bill Veitch moved “ that the property report be accepted” seconded David Mills – carried. HOUSE MANAGERS REPORT Bill Partel tabled his report – The bar continues to do well financially. Thanks to Alistair Drummond and Mike Purdie-Smith – who support me with bar duties. The Wednesday morning group of club members who assist with maintaining the clubrooms and grounds, are much appreciated. George Martin and his team of helpers do a sterling job for our parts department, and Bruce Murray does a great job mowing the lawns. Many thanks to Dave Ross, Alistair Drummond and Susan Partel for a welcoming atmosphere in the clubrooms for special occasions and more formal functions. I very much appreciate this. Bill Partel moved “that the House Managers report be accepted” seconded Bill Veitch – carried Arising Friday nights in the winter are very quiet. Propose to trial being open only on the 1 st and last Friday of the month for three months. Costs a lot for power, man power for so few people etc. No discussion was had. It was agreed to advertise in the Roadrunner starting July. Suggested to shift Motorcycle Group night from the 1st to the 2nd Friday of the month declined. Keep status quo.

Arrange prizes, show and shine. Have a meeting with those interested in organising this. Daffodil Day – Dave Mills advised that it would be the same arrangements as last year. PWV/P60/P80 – set for the 23rd of September – no offers to organise. Committee will delegate Autospectacular – set for the 8th of September – will be looking at putting a display in. Using this years Restoration vehicles. Taieri Tour – will set up a committee to run this. Ask for helpers in the Roadrunner Commercial/Veteran Rally – Colin Winter will organise someone to look after this – as he will be a Nat Vet Rally Jackson Rally 20th Jan – Bill Veitch and Graeme Duthie to organise Brighton Run 27th Jan – Colin Winter will oversee this with the help of other committee members Ladies Run – Committee we delegate to someone Vintage/Post Vintage – Stu Neil not interested to do this again Restoration Rally – to be delegated by committee Cadbury Vehicles - Mark Wilkinson – per Sir Julian asking if we would be interested in taking one of these, as Cabury’s are closing the factory and wanting to pass on chattels of no further use to them. The Historic Fire Engine Society have been given a vehicle – it was felt that as a club we should be supporting the Fire Engine Soc without needing to take on the ownership of a vehicle ourselves. David Mills agreed Longstaffe Indian Motorcycle - Darryl Longstaffe has been gifted this bike, will advise of its future.

Branch History David Mills has been looking at this and is happy to continue. Disappointed that it has taken 15 years to finalise this. Looking at a cost of $40- $60 per book to publish, are members prepared to pay this? Feel this needs to be done. What you get is what you get. It will only go as far as 50 years of the branch history. Graeme Duthie – suggest we sell signed copies via book shop outlets. Bob Oakley – indicated that it should be done. Not necessarily a hard copy. Perhaps gift to 50 year members. Indicated that funding could be got for this via Motoring Club Trust. Colin Winter moved ‘that we aim to print of 100 copies’ - 2nd Keith Moore Sparkaholics David Mills – noted that at a meeting with interested members it was decided to keep this going. Need a co-ordinator. Have information for a July Run. Stu Campion has ideas that he can pass on. No one has volunteered to take on this position at this stage. Permit Plates Bob Woodford – Beaded Wheels article – came about by FOM groups. Management work with FOM – lobbying with the Government – it is important for groups to be part of FOMC. Club History Looking for some help confirming details Hello folks. I am getting well and truly into the history now. However, I was a bit optimistic about a self-appointed deadline of having done the job for publication at Christmas. Late last year I asked for a bit of help but did not get much at all. So I am trying again. Here are some wants. In the next couple of months, I need information about things or incidents, or help or lead into other facts or support other facts. Please no email, as I have not passed computer 101. Hard copy please as then I can file and build up an easy resource. What do I need? I would like someone to do an interview for me with one of our older members. Pictures and Photos. I have been given boxes of these but regrettably most have no information whatsoever with them. Some are even contradictory with others obviously taken at the same time. I will be bringing these in selected groups to the Wednesday morning teas over the next few weeks for you all to go through. There are many younger images of now older members so I should get some feedback. Stories of interest. For example the Les Nye/Gordon Sharpe trip being the first car through the Haast with the Prime Ministerial motorcade. I have the original text from Gordon on that one. Haggster‌anyone got any written stuff on the trip over the mountains? Funny incidents. Again, as above verify the facts. Names of people you consider key people over the years and why. Write up on special one off events such as taking part in film or documentary productions, visits from famous people etc. I need someone to start going through all the newsletters for me to pick out some of the above. Some smattering of English would be good for this job. We may need to edit. A tentative closing date for all this would be AGM. We can then take stock of what we have and make some decisions. Restoration Rally Report Sunday 19th May saw 10 cars and 2 motorcycles come together for a tour, and the chance to view any new Restorations within the branch. The only Restoration presented for Judging this year was Bruce Murray’s immaculate 1953 A7 BSA Motorcycle. Our 60-year member, Graham Dalton, and his son Gary came along to view the bike as well. Once everyone arrived and had a quick catch up, they were sent off on a “Roundabout Tour”. Yes, every 2nd or third instruction seemed to include a Roundabout in it, as they travelled on the outskirts of the city via Tomahawk, Portsmouth Drive, Butts Road, Fulton Road, Wakari Road, Three Mile Hill, and bypassing Mosgiel to head up Quarry Road through Fairfield, Waldronville, Green Island and back to the clubrooms via Sidey Street, with it’s views over the city and harbour. A hearty afternoon tea greated them as they came back into the warm clubrooms, with hot savouries tea and coffee on offer. Most of the vehicles that attended this tour were PWV, and P60 vehicles. The threatening rain, held off but there was a very cold wind.

National South Island Easter Rally - Ashburton I managed to count 13 Otago Branch members who attended this Rally over three days in Ashburton. A team of 4 was put forward for the Pennzoil Trophy Competition, which involved the combination of all points gained by the team during the weekend competition. This included the time trial and field tests. As some of these members got caught up with a break down during the time section, this put them out of contention right from the start. Nevermind, everyone seemed to enjoy the weekend of 50th celebrations for the branch, and the chance to meet up with friends and making new ones. Most entrants travelled to Ashburton on the Friday with Registration and a welcome cuppa happening in the afternoon. The evening was at our leisure. Saturday morning everyone gathered at the Racecourse for Rally briefing, before heading out on our allocated routes and time sections. All routes took us to Methven for our lunch stop in the sun. There was the opportunity to stop at points of interest along the route, with some stopping at the secondhand shop in Mayfield. After lunch we were directed around some historic sites as we made our way back towards Ashburton. They were the Corwar Station Gatekeepers Lodge – the homestead was on top of the cliff further behind the Lodge overlooking the Rikaia River. This was built in the 1870’s, the floor, internal and external walls being constructed of concrete. Still furnished the way it was originally. Next was Barrhill Village and its school – now the community Hall, and remnants of many other buildings on the site – a lot of interesting history here. Well worth a visit next time you are passing through Ashburton. Some went and visited The Grange Tractor Collection of Anthony Hampton, which is housed in a purpose build shed on his farm on the MethvenChertsey Road. The collection consisting of Massey Harris and Massey Ferguson tractors which cover part of the evolution of the brand over the years. Last, but not least was the visit to Bruce McIlroy Ltd authorized service business for Rolls Royce and Bentley cars in a very modern workshop. They provide a service for a large range of cars from veterans to the very modern, from all over NZ and beyond. They offer a service to rebuild RR and Benley cars to an extremely high standard, with a modern machine workshop and white metaling is carried out on the premises.
The Saturday evening dinner and entertainment drew a large crowd back to the Race course for the evening. With the organisers running a show similar to it’s in the bag. Giving the contestants the opportunity to win some of the many items that had been donated for the event. Sunday morning turned out raining and wet. Field tests and public display were effectively a non event. Entrants were asked questions, instead of doing the field tests, while the gathered inside the buildings. Most of them finding there own entertainment, others visited the parts shed and Railway Museum in the afternoon. The Prizegiving Dinner saw another large crowd. Peter Mac was the MC for the evening, with his interest in cars, he kept us well entertained. Diane Ross, Patron for the Ashburton Branch Cut the Anniversary Cake. Peter Laing gained a placing with his 1957 International Truck, and his wife won the Raffle. All our members got home safely – even though one car needed a tow back to Mosgiel. It is now running again. The next Easter Rally is in the North Island next year. 20

Snippet…. Josh Mewhinney was a local motorcycle dealer operating from Princess St. Back in the 1920's and 30's he owned and successfully raced a number of bikes, and after his riding days, was a well respected tuner of race models in Dunedin. There are photos of Josh on a 1920 ABC attached to a cigar shaped sidecar, and also at beach races mounted on a big V twin American Super X. Josh also built 'Bluey', a rare Indian race engine fitted into a Norton speedway frame. This famous ' Special' was raced at many events, not just locally but out of town as well, ridden by Bill Ashton and Bert Rossen, two well known riders in Dunedin. It was 1936 when Josh imported a new TT 490 Norton to Racing Specs, thought to top the 'ton'out of the box ! But sadly for Josh, it did not. When uncrated, it was found to have the inlet valve open when crated at Bracebridge St. so Josh sat down and wrote a very stern letter to the factory explaining how the motor should have been packed, on the compression stroke. More history on this 83 year old race bike next month. All this history passed down as I wasn't born then!
