NATIONAL RALLY FOR CANCER Sunday 22nd of August This year we will be having the public display at Wingatui Race course. South Otago Branch members will be joining us there, having followed a rally route to arrive there for the display in the afternoon. The committee is looking for some members who would be willing to help oversee this event. Posters have been supplied and these will need to be put on display at various public venues to attract the attention of the public etc. Please contact a committee member if you can help. 6
Chairman’s Report 2021 – tabled at the AGM This last year was my fifth year as your branch chairman however this position would not be possible without the help and support of all members of the committee. I would like to personally thank the current committee for the work they have put in over the past year. To those who have chosen not to seek re-election – on behalf of the members I thank you for your input. To the members working outside of the committee, either helping around the club rooms, bar, parts shed, library, branch BBQ, or anything else that arises for the betterment of the branch I would like to thank you for the valuable work you do. The branch history is currently being printed and I would like to personally thank David Mills for taking on a role which I had convinced him to do believing at the start that it would be a simple task of editing and proofing. The final result is something that David and indeed the branch should be proud of. My thanks also to everyone who helped David with this project – from contributing history, information and photos, to proof reading the draft copies to ensure the final result is correct and error free. Thanks to a generous grant from the Otago Motor Club Trust it is the committee’s intent that all current branch members will be given a copy so I encourage you to come to the launch where you will be able to collect your copy. The committee is in the process of finalising the details for the launch and will issue an invite once this has been completed. A big thank you to branch members who have assisted with the arranging of rallies/ runs during the last 12 months. I appreciate the work that goes into them so do the members. Our Club Captain Kevin Mason has organised some new activities for the branch most of which have been enthusiastically received. The overnight rally to Gore held in March and the garage raids held in April both had excellent numbers as did the Coast to Coast held last weekend which was a joint venture between George Martin and Kevin.
The monthly Thursday runs are continuing to show strong numbers as are the weekly Wednesday morning noggin and natter at the club rooms where the members get to enjoy the warm scones made by Colin Winter. During the year the committee made the decision to change the Friday night noggins from every Friday night to the first and last Friday of the month. We also decided to have a guest speaker at the club night on the last Friday night. We have had a variety of speakers so far and would welcome any suggestions and recommendations. The topics do not necessarily have to be on a vehicle nor do you need to talk for half an hour as we can adjust the evening to suit. As a suggestion it could be a talk about a recent rally that you have attended such as the Irishman Creek Rally, or the Dunedin -Haast Coast to Coast where we can see photos taken during the day. During my time on the committee over the past 10 years the governance of the VCC on both a national level and local level has been evolving to ensure that the club continues to survive and remain relevant in the years to come. This includes remaining a voice within the Federation of Motoring so we can be heard with 7
any proposed changes to motor vehicles and also keeping an eye on the proposed changes to the Incorporated Societies Act of 1908. Part of this evolvement has been the introduction of the duty of care check lists which we are encouraged to complete for all events and the clubrooms. For the club rooms and part shed they are like a health and safety checklist while for branch events they are similar to the drivers’ briefings that we already do. They do however recommend some additional items that as an organiser we should look out for and be aware of so you can include them either in the briefing or the instructions. Please do not be put off from organising an event because of the check list, they are primarily there as a help and guide of what to look out for when plotting the route. Marion completed one for the recent restoration rally and found it easy to complete. I also have had experience of completing something similar when I was involved with the Girl Guides so between the two of us, we are available to help complete the forms if required. We will be keeping a folder for each one so that it the future we have a reference guide to look back on and update if required. We are about to hold the election of officers for the 2021/2022 year and this year as there were no nominations received by the closing date as advertised in the Road Runner, we will be calling for nominations from the floor. One could deduce from this that you as branch members are happy with the current committee however there are as usual some vacancies. I would encourage you to consider standing for the committee at some stage as I am sure you all have something to offer. The make-up of the committee was changed some years ago so instead of having section reps which represented a particular section, the whole committee represents all branch members with the 4 committee members taking on projects whenever and wherever is required. The position of Chairman requires that you have previously served on committee at some stage for a minimum of 12 months. As I mentioned previously, the governance of the VCC has evolved and changed over the past 10-15 years so my personal opinion is that you will find this role a lot easier if you been on the committee during these changes. In closing I want to thank you all for your support and encouragement over the past 5 years. It has been a privilege and pleasure.

BRANCH AGM – Report Thank you to those members who came along and joined in with the Pot Luck Lunch before the AGM. A good number more arrived afterwards for this. There was some good discussion of various matters. The draft of a new logo for the National Club was tabled and some lively discussion followed. Many members asking why ‘fix something that ain’t broke’? I have included copy of examples of the draft logos and encourage you to let us know what you think, as this will be discussed and voted on at the National Exec/AGM in August this year. NB: Getting it to this stage has apparently already cost the club (all of us members) over $2,000. Looking ahead: members have been tasked to actively ensure we manage to get a new Chairperson on board next year. Nicola has agreed to stay on for one more year. A sub committee is to be formed under the guidance of Travis Michelle to co-ordinate the 50th Taieri Tour in 2022. Travis will be looking for members to help on this committee. This would be a good way for some of our newer members to get involved. As you will be able to learn how things are done while working with some of your more experienced members. � Colin Winter has also formed a subcommittee to co-ordinate our infamous Dunedin to Brighton Run. Thanks to Phil and Sally Boult, Stephen Kydd, and Gary and Sarah Winter for coming on board to help with this. 10

Your secretary does email some of the south island branches to members with email addresses. ENTRY FORMS FOR OTHER BRANCH EVENTS These can be accessed via the branch newsletters on the VCC website. Or there should be a copy in the clubrooms or contact me for a copy. Entries usually close within two weeks of the event. NNB: Please if you are planning to enter a local event, and running late with entry forms, please contact the organizer by phone or email to let them know you are coming. They need to know numbers for printing the instructions, and catering purposes for some events. LIBRARY: The committee is needing a couple of members who would be able and have the time to upgrade the data base of the books that we have in the library. A member has already looked into the best option to do this, and there is a computer on site that can be used to do this. Some assistance with this would be really appreciated. SPARE PARTS SHED: – Parts shed is usually open every Wednesday morning, and Friday evenings when the clubrooms are open. Reminder – see if you can effectively recycle your parts before scrapping them. NO TYREs by request.
VIC APPLICATIONS – please note - VIC Application forms have been updated – again PLEASE CHECK THAT ALL PAPERWORK/PHOTOS ARE PRESENT AND CORRECT BEFORE FORWARDING TO YOUR BRANCH VEHICLE REGISTRAR – It gets very time consuming when we need to contact you time and again to ensure everything is sorted.
The VIC/Authenticity Statement forms were altered back in October 2020 with regard to the VTC needing photos of the chassis/frame number and/or engine number of vehicles. Each application you make for a vehicle MUST include these along with the 3 identical photos (correct size) of the vehicle. Applications will be put on hold until these are supplied, if they do not accompany the application, when submitted to National Office. Please can you ensure that the application forms are completed fully, especially in regards to mileage, engine manufacturer, some history of the vehicle (even if it is only “purchased from Trade Me in April 1999”) and which Branch is completing the form. The Branch is often missing from NonMember applications and my knowledge of small places in New Zealand is not that great so a Branch name would assist greatly. 2021 RESTORATION TROPHY AWARD 1948 T26 Lago Record Berlin Owner- Paddy Williams History of the vehicle– Factory to Ets Cobor-Amsterdam (dealer). Imported to NZ by Gerarda Wilhelmina Frederika Maris -McArthur on 29th Dec 1956. The condition of the vehicle looked good on photo – but full restoration was required. Almost all aspects of the vehicle were restored. It was restored using original parts with a few relatively minor upgrades, mainly electrical. Colour is close to original when imported. Owner completed most of the restoration, with professionals carrying out aspects of the work beyond any level of the owners competence.
2021 GRAHAM DALTON CUP - MOTORCYLE RESTORATION OF THE YEAR 1930 R7 AJS Motorcycle Owner Bruce Christie
History of the Bike - saved from land fill approximately 60 years ago. Only frame, engine, gearbox and oil tank. No wheels, petrol tank, carburetor, magneto, mudguards, chain case, wheel hubs, brake drums, exhaust pipe etc. It was in a very rusty and worn out condition. Original frame, forks engine and gearbox and oil tank were used. Everything else was made or sourced from other models. Very little available for this model. Professional help was sort for the following: painting, new mudguards, internal engine parts and exhaust pipe, rear brake drum. The rest was done by the owner.

TARGA RALLY – OCTOBER 2021 Hi Everyone - Here's the latest updates: 1. News: Targa Rotorua in May was a huge success and planning for Targa NZ in October is now well underway with route planning complete. A total of 1,958 kms is planned for the 5 day event, (comprising 805 kms of closed road special stages and 1,153 kms of open road touring stages). The 2 day event (being the last 2 days of the 5 day event), is planned to cover 805 kms, (comprising 343 kms of special stages and 462 kms of touring stages). We're looking forward to you joining us for the drive of a lifetime over iconic central North Island roads. 2. Entries: We've currently got 22 entries confirmed for our 5 day time trial, with several others expressing interest in the 2 day event. At this stage 14 of the 22 entries are from the South Island, so come on you North Islanders! As expected, the majority of interest in the 2 day event is coming from North Islanders, and we're eagerly awaiting your entries! We really hope to exceed 30 entries for this year's time trial and I'd greatly appreciate your assistance in encouraging others to join us for this great event. A reminder that the entry fees increase by $100 from 1st July, so please enter on-line asap via: https://urg.co.nz/2021-targa-entry/ Also, don't forget that all drivers/co-drivers for our time trial event must be members of the Vintage Car Club of NZ, and all vehicles entered must be VCC eligible with a VCC Vehicle Identity Card (VIC). Itinerary: If you want full Itinerary – please check the above websites. Targa prize giving moved from Saturday evening to Sunday morning breakfast, 31st October, starting at 7.30am in Havelock North. The reason for this is that with an increased number of entrants expected this year for Competition, Tour and Time Trial, the final day finish time for some entrants, (especially Targa Tour who run last through each stage), is likely to be much later in the day. 16
Having a prize giving breakfast (as we did 2018 at Queenstown), will therefore enable all of us to relax at the end of the event without feeling rushed to attend prize giving, (as happened 2019 at Palmerston North). 4. Travel: Check out discounts for Cook Strait Crossings for those South Island entrants yet to make ferry bookings. Wherever you're travelling from, please allow sufficient time to be in New Plymouth by midday on Sunday 24th October, in order to be out at the Holden Museum in Hillsborough by 2pm for our VCC meet & greet, vehicle scrutineering, RallySafe & livery installation. They've got a great cafe and the museum is world class, so I'd recommend arriving early to take advantage of both. Please also note the change of prize giving to an awards breakfast starting 7.30am Sunday morning 31st October, when planning your departure home from Havelock North later that morning. 5. Supplementary Regs: These are currently being updated for 2021 and should be available shortly. I'll have more details in my July newsletter. 6. Hints & Tips for MotorCyclists 1910 A novice usually wonders whether he will ever be able to get on his motor bicycle. It is best to practice mounting by pedal or footrest down a falling grade, with the belt removed. The art is soon acquired and becomes perfectly automatic. I invariably mount clean off the ground, which I consider much safer than feeling for a pedal or footrest. If the rider is nervous he may momentarily raise the valve or switch off while swinging himself into the saddle, but unless he learns to jump on cleanly with the engine running he will only be able to start on the flat or downhill. A weakly rider with a single-geared machine and no clutch should return to the bottom of the hill and make a fresh start, or else find a side road descending to enter the hill on an angle. A strong rider should make the most careful preparations. One strong masterful heave is worth yards of weak half-hearted pushing. Buckled Wheels. There is no need to push or cart a machine because a wheel has been buckled, but if badly buckled the pace must be kept low. Remove the wheel, use a stone as an anvil, and a big wrench as a hammer if a proper hammer is not available. Hammer rather on each side of the kink than on kinked portion itself. By these means the wheel can be made rideable, but on reaching the repairer it is advisable to have the wheel accurately trued and spokes tightened. Cold Feet. It is fatal to start with cold feet. They will never get warm in riding, and in bad weather they may get cold. I keep a special pair of large loose fitting boots for winter work and inside them I wear silk stockings next to the skin, with a pair of enormous Scotch stockings over them. Nevertheless, in really cold weather, the feet gradually begin to freeze. The only remedy is to dismount occasionally, and Private Collection stamp the soles warm again before of proceeding. On long night rides I carry a Vintage Originals short length of clothes line and skip. Nothing warms up the entire anatomy so Men and Women efficiently as skipping, and the fly-by-night 1920’s - 1970’s era rider may occasionally see a Road - Rider Accessories, hats, furs and much skipping weird and solitary by the roadmore side beneath an icy wondering moon.
