OVERNIGHT RUN PLANNED FOR SATURDAY 10TH AUGUST An informal weekend away – with visits to places of interest on the way- weather permitting - to our overnight stay in Waimate. Please arrange your own accommodation at either: Kingswood Motels 03 6898022 They have studio units and 1 and two bedrooms units Or Victoria Park Motorcamp 03689 0000 they have studio and ensuite cabins – bring your own bedding and pillows Please Note: Crossroads Motels are no longer operating as motels. Plan would be to leave Dunedin at 10.30 am – bring your own lunch and nibbles any games for evening entertainment. A venue will be arranged for Saturday Dinner at Waimate. Sunday will be a leisurely drive home with further activities and lunch somewhere on the way. Members have been asking for an Overnight Run - So let’s do it. Please let Marion McConachie or Kevin Mason know if you are a starter.

Annual Report Reflecting back over the past 12 months we should all have a feeling of accomplishment. The outside of the club rooms have recently been completely repainted with thanks to The Community Trust of Otago, The Lion Foundation and The Southern Trust for supporting this project through their grant programme. At the same time we replaced one of the windows in the lounge which had a large crack - funding for this project was from The Bendigo Valley Foundation. Another project the committee is working on is installing a safety fence along the length of the driveway heading to the parts department. Partial funding for this has been arranged through the Otago Masonic Charitable Trust and we hope to have the fence installed towards the start of spring. You may have noticed the flue is missing over the fireplace in the lounge. This needed to be either replaced or removed due to a crack and as either option meant climbing on to the roof an urgent decision was made in April so we could take advantage of the scaffolding around the building while it was being repainted.
Last AGM we voted on a change to a clause in the branch constitution so future amendments were ratified by the National Management Committee and not the National Executive. Our notice of motion was tabled at the August Executive meeting and deferred due to the National Management Committee putting together a draft branch constitution to be considered by the executive. The Management committee had noticed some anomalies in some branch constitutions and that some have not reviewed their constitutions since they were incorporated so the idea behind having a standardised constitution is to help those branches in bringing their constitution up to date. It is not compulsory for branches to adopt the proposed constitution if/when it is confirmed by the National Executive. The Incorporated Societys Act has not been revised since it became law in 1908. It is currently under review and we understand that any proposed changes will be referred to the government hopefully later this year. Until the amended act has been finalised and in case we need to make further changes the branch committees recommendation is to defer formal ratification from the National Executive. The Thursday runs are continuing to grow from strength to strength and it was lovely that Mark and I were able to attend the April run which coincided with ANZAC Day. Our monthly speakers are gathering momentum and proving popular with 3 speakers already lined up for the coming months. Please let us know if you are interested in giving or know someone who would like to give a 7
presentation on a Friday night it could be on a restoration project, career talk (current or previous) or a holiday. The choice of topics are endless. My thanks to the committee for their work and support over the past year it has been a pleasure to work with you. My thanks also to the members who have helped out during the year - Christmas BBQ, Marshalling at the Best of British and Otago Rally, or maintaining the property both inside and out it is greatly appreciated. BRANCH AGM - REPORT - 16 JUNE We had a good number of members attend the Pot Luck Lunch before the AGM and approximately 40 people attended the AGM. Keith Moore has stood down as Club Captain and Alistair Graham has stood down as committee member. We that you both for the work you have done while on the committee. Alistair has committed to assisting with the organization of an event early next year. The committee therefore is in need of a club captain. The committee continues to ensure that members get a good selection of events to attend during the coming year – however it would be great to be able to get some more members helping to arrange these events. Thank you to those who have already put your names forward to help. New people always bring new suggestions and ideas. As most of you are aware we have had the exterior of the clubrooms cleaned and repainted and a few of the lounge windows replaced, as they were cracking. VERO 2021 Presentation
Tony Haycock, is happy to run a presentation on the planning of the Vero 2021 in New Plymounth on Monday 12th August, 7:30pm at the club rooms. Please let us know as soon as possible if you are interested in coming along to this. At present it looks like we will possibly have about 6-8 people attend! Otherwise, we need to advise him that we do not have numbers to make his visit worth while. We are inviting both North and South Otago branch members to come along.
Library Update – Thank you to the club member who has offered to assist with sorting the manuals and parts books – this has proven very helpful. Library is open on Wednesday mornings and Friday nights.
Guest Speakers – Club Nights
The following speakers have been confirmed for the next three months. Planned for the last Friday of each month. Neil Gamble speaking about his eligible cars at the end of July. Stuart Hewson might be available to give a talk on the Manapouri Dam - he used to work there and also has a 1/2 hour DVD on the scheme. Date to be confirmed. We would like to hear from anyone else who would like to speak about their hobbies etc for about 30 – 45 mins - then we can set a date for you. ENTERTAINMENT BOOKS - ARE NOW AVAILABLE for the 2019-2020 year: $60 per book All you members who come along to our Thursday Runs or even attend out of town events, you will be surprised which cafes and restaurants offer some amazing discounts. Also when travelling in NZ and Australia there are deals available for hire vehicles, flights, accommodation. Check out the sample book at the clubrooms and contact your branch secretary if you would like to purchase one. Savings of up to 50% in some cases. $11 from each sale goes to your branch. A sample of the book is available for looking at the clubrooms VIC Applications – please note - VIC Application forms have been updated. When completing these forms please ensure that you have the most up to date form – Check the VCC website. – As these continue to be updated as procedures change etc. Other Branch Rally Entry Forms - as you will see there are a lot of events happening in and around our region in March. I have emailed details to all members who have email address’s. There are also a few copies in the clubrooms, please ensure you leave at least one copy there, so that others can copy them. Photocopier is available. NNB: Please if you are planning to enter a local event, and running late with entry forms, please contact the organizer by phone or email to let them know you are coming. They need to know numbers for printing the instructions, and catering purposes for some events. 10
Spare Parts Shed – Parts shed is usually open every Wednesday morning, and Friday evenings when the clubrooms are open. Reminder – see if you can effectively recycle your parts before scrapping them. NO TYREs by request. The nearest AED defibrillator to the clubrooms is on the outside wall of the 4 Square shop on corner of Bayview Road. Please make a point of familiarising yourself of its location – Never know when it might be needed. SOLD OR SELLING YOUR VIC’D VCC VEHICLE ENSURE YOU SEND VIC CARD ALONG WITH CHANGE OF OWNERSHIP DETAILS TO NATIONAL OFFICE – Remember this paperwork is the property of the National Club – this is their way of keeping records of Vehicle ownership etc. Vero Insurance Scheme - Just a reminder, the VCC Vero insurance scheme is set up for those with current VCC membership. If they have insurance cover under the VCC Scheme with Vero, current membership is a requirement. 2020 National North Island Easter Rally
The Horowhenua Branch is responsible for this event. Our club rooms are in Levin approximately one and half hours north of Wellington. We have great country roads to motor on. To help us plan for this event can you please ask your members if they intend to come. If you could let me know the numbers that would be a great help for our planning. Best of British 2019 - Presentation to East Otago St Johns On Sunday 9th June Mark and I went through to Palmerston to represent our branch when the fund raising cheque from this years Best of British was presented to the chosen charity - this year being East Otago St Johns. More than 100 vehicles took part on the day raising $2734.50 which they greatly appreciated. East Otago St Johns covers approximately 5000 residences ranging from as far south as the Merton Hill, north to Moeraki and inland to Morrisons. The station is primarily staffed by 13 volunteers some of whom live in Warrington, Kakanui and Dunback so their wish list is to build sleeping quarters to allow officers from these areas to stay on site as they live too far from the station to respond to call outs from their own homes. The donation from the Best of British is a great start to raising the funds required for this project so thank you again to everyone who took part on the day - either as a marshall or entrant. Nicola

This is a National VCC Club event to help raise the profile of our club – while fundraising for the Cancer Society. The committee is discussing various options of activities, advertising and venues for this event. If anyone has some suggestions/ thoughts these would be gratefully aired. DAFFODIL DELIVERIES MONDAY 26TH AUGUST CANCER SOCIETY Daffodil Day is Friday 30th August this year with a few sites on Saturday the 31st also. The Vintage Car Club deliveries are always a highlight of the event! This year we are looking for 12 teams of Drivers and Runners for delivering the presales on Monday the 26th August. (Some of the areas were quite big last year so if we can get more drivers we can make smaller delivery routes.) Starting at 12 midday and rostered in 10 minute lots to arrive and load the daffodils. - Fredrick Street entrance to back of Cancer Society building. A roster for this is available at the clubrooms – Please note your details if you are able to volunteer a few hours of your time to deliver prepaid daffodil orders to businesses around the city. If you prefer you own runner can you fill the details in on the roster please. If you have a VCC eligible vehicle that can be used for these deliveries that would be great from a publicity point of view If not going to the clubrooms please let your branch secretary know if you are willing to volunteer for this. Mid Week Runs The Thursday Run in May took us to the Café in Brighton. It was great to meet Marilyn Marshall there. July’s run will see about 22 of us head over to Lawrence for lunch at the Hotel. Everyone is welcome to come on these runs. It is a good way to get to know other members of the branch. You can bring which ever vehicle you feel comfortable bringing. Some are even happy to share a back seat. If you would like to attend – but not happy to drive yourself please let the branch secretary or Kevin Mason know and we will surely find a ride for you.
The Mewhinney Norton Part 2 The first major event entered was the 1937 NZ Grand Prix held at Cust over Easter. The Norton piloted by Bert Rosson finished the 125 mile race in 7th place, probably not as well as Josh expected of this new top of the range race bike. However, worse was to follow at the next years GP, the Norton broke a conrod on the 15th lap, how much internal damage we don’t know. Bert put up the fastest lap in the race so the Norton must have been performing to expectation up until. Much the same in 1939, leading the race by quite a margin I was told a magneto points spring broke and Bert retired on the 19th lap. WW2 interrupted the Cust events and the Norton was sold to Clyde Walker but due to lack of petrol and many motorcycle boys away the bike was not used. Owner number three was well known Earle Smither. Earle ran his own shop first in Maclaggin Street then Filleul Street, riding the Norton and a 1947 Triumph Tiger 100 with many winning results on both machines. During 1947-49 Earle imported many Norton parts from well known UK tuner Francis Beart, at times when he was a little short of payment Francis would ask for chocolate in payment shortfall. One order was for a new “square” cylinder and head, these were specially produced by Francis and the cooling fins were eleven and a half inches square, very impressive. Earle either chromed most parts of the Norton or drilled holes in many, both in some cases. Next month – The demise of the Norton. Well almost. Bill Veitch 16
