Planning is underway for the Best of British to run on Sunday 14th March. The Charity this time if for the Fire Engine Restoration Society. They will have engines on display and plan a number of children’s activities. – See poster, page 9.
Otago Branch Overnight Run – March 13-14th to Gore
Get your accommodation arranged now - the Esplanade Motel is a great place to stay. Meet at the Mosgiel Railway Station at 8.30am sharp for departure to Gore. We have arranged visits to Mandeville Aircraft Museum, and two private car collections of Gore members. A visit for the ladies is also arranged. Bring a picnic lunch, or lunch can be purchased at Mandeville NUMBERS ARE NEEDED FOR SATURDAY NIGHT DINNER at the Gore RSA, and the visits. On Sunday we will check out the Gore Branch Swapmeet before departing for home via the Catlins. Written instructions will be provided for the weekend. Please contact either Kevin Mason 4885198, or Bryan McConachie 4530404 or at clubrooms on a Wednesday with your intentions to attend. A cost of $5.00 per vehicle will be requested to help cover costs involved.

COAST TO COAST RUN – 12-13th June 2021
This is still being planned. We are looking at staying overnight at Haast before returning to Dunedin on Sunday. Please book your own accomodation and advise Kevin Mason of your intentions. Further details will be advised closer to the time. 6
Christmas and New Year Celebrations have passed and I trust everyone had a relaxing time with family and friends. Prior to Christmas the annual BBQ was held with good numbers enjoying themselves. My thanks to those who helped with preparing the food, cooking on the BBQ, and clearing up. This was definitely a relaxing way to end the year. The Dunedin to Brighton Rally was held on the 16th January with 40 entries which included some newcomers. Everyone who attended enjoyed their day including the prizegiving dinner and there was an overwhelming call for this format to continue. Thank you to Colin and Mark for organising a successful event and also to all the marshalls who helped on the day. Also held in January was the annual Jackson tour and my thanks to Bill and Bruce for once again organising this event and to those who participated. The committee has decided from March to have a guest speaker at our monthly club nights every month. The topic will vary each month so please look out for these in the Road Runner and please contact us if you know of anyone who would be interested in giving a talk. As mentioned at last year’s branch AGM it is my intention to stand down as Chairman so I am giving members the opportunity to contact me should you be interested in standing to discuss what is required. SPARE PARTS SHED: – Parts shed is usually open every Wednesday morning, and Friday evenings when the clubrooms are open. Reminder – see if you can effectively recycle your parts before scrapping them. NO TYREs by request. VIC APPLICATIONS – please note - VIC Application forms have been updated again. From National Office - completion of VEHICLE IDENTITY CARD/ AUTHENTICITY STATEMENT FORMS The VIC/Authenticity Statement forms were altered back in October 2020 with regard to the VTC needing photos of the chassis/frame number and/or engine number of vehicles. Each application you make for a vehicle MUST include these along with the 3 identical photos of the vehicle. Applications will be put on hold until these are supplied, if they do not accompany the application, when submitted to National Office. Please can you ensure that the application forms are completed fully, especially in regards to mileage, engine manufacturer, some history of the vehicle (even if it is only “purchased from Trade Me in April 1999”) and which Branch is completing the form. The Branch is often missing from Non-Member applications and my knowledge of small places in New Zealand is not that great so a Branch name would assist greatly. LAST FRIDAY OF THE MONTH – CLUB NIGHT GUEST SPEAKERS At our last meeting it was agreed that we should continue with Guest Speakers on the last Friday of each month before our club meeting. We are always looking for volunteers/suggestions for speakers please contact a committee member if you have any thoughts on this. The first speakers are scheduled for: Friday 26th March – Tom Hewson – will be providing us with some interesting information on the politics and challenges of the Manapouri Dam construction. Friday 30th April – Tony Pomfret – will do a presentation on Early Motor Trade and Racing in the UK in the 70’s. 11

South Otago Branch Moped Rally In early December the South Otago Branch held their moped rally and the venue change at Lawrence was interesting even though the days mileage covered was not great. Gabriel's Gully was the first stop where local Gordon gave a good historical talk on the gold mining in the early days. A couple of stops on the way back to lunch, then many thought they might make it rich doing some gold panning, our Ken struck success with some small ' nuggets' I had a problem seeing them but he took them home. Another short ride to an old brewery sight where again some of the locals told of more early day history. I guess with the population in the 1800s around the Lawrence area much industry and early building was required. Fortunately many of these have survived. Pleasant weather brought a turnout of around 25 riders, ten riders from the Branch, some with 'support crew'. Two Kevin's, Ken, Paddy, Bill, Bruce, Andrew, Ruth, Gill and George - it will be our turn in December 2021, so open to suggestions. South Otago put on an excellent day with assistance from the machinery museum, the rally base, and as usual the morning and afternoon teas just perfect. Words: Bill Veitch Photos: Ruth Edmunds

VCC Otago Branch Library - Cataloguing of books and manuals A few of our members are looking at updating the records of books and manuals etc in the library. As you can imagine this is going to be a big task. The aim will be to make the task of finding books and information easier for the user. It will also give us the ability to manage the movement of material. There are however some questions that spring to mind, and the answers to these will determine the way the items are recorded and processed. The main ones being: Q1 - does the branch want an online, searchable catalogue? Q2 - if so, what format? Excel spreadsheet, access database or similar application Q3 – alternatively, do we carry on as before with a card-based system? Q 4 - Will a computerised catalogue be used by members? Hello British car enthusiasts, The Best of British Charity Motoring Day is returning and we will be looking forward to a great motoring day on Sunday March 14th, 2021. Celebrating British automotive technology and heritage – any British vehicle (car, bike, truck, camper, bus) is welcome. Car Trial leaving Victoria Road (St Kilda) carpark from 9am Show’n’Shine at Milton Sportsground (off SH1), cars arriving from approx 10am onwards. BBQ/Food available. Coffee and ice cream carts. All funds to Dunedin Fire Brigade Restoration Trust. “Marque of the Day” – Commercial/Utility vehicles (vans, lorries, ambulances, fire-engines, buses, tractors etc). We’re concentrating on something different this time, instead of a specific Marque of the day, we are highlighting those hard working, unsung heroes, the commercial utility vehicles. Dunedin Brighton Run Report
With an entry list of over 40 vehicles, our organiser, Colin Winter can be happy with the results for the day. The day started calm and overcast but soon turned to sunshine and high temperatures that saw entrants seeking shade at the lunch stop. The city Mayor arrived in style, as passenger in Colin Winter’s 1900 Wolseley with his wife and son following behind in Bob Herron’s 1915 Model T. Following an opening welcome and speech by Mayor Aaron Hawkins, Dougal Stevenson compared the vehicles as they were flagged off on their run to Brighton for the lunch and field tests. The 1900 Wolseley was driven by Gary Winter, assisted by Braxton, Colin Pearce’s 1911 Indian which was a starter on earlier runs was ably ridden by his grandson in law Graham Boyd, and all three Sunbeam’s were entered again this year. One entrant learnt not to go swapping tyres and tubes the day before the event! The tubes did not like the change! So it had to be trailered home. Younger family members were out driving their family vehicles with Ryan Boult driving the 1913 Overland, and great to see Bob Oakley’s Regal being driven by Roger Oakley. We must not forget the number of entrants who attend that come from north, south, east and west of Dunedin. With a number from Ashburton, Invercargill, and Central Otago. Following field tests at Brighton and a hearty lunch, entrants enjoyed the opportunity to catch up with entrants and view the vehicles. The evening prizegiving was held at the Balmacewan Golf Club and on Sunday some of the entrants motored over to Carey’s Bay for lunch and chat before heading home. I understand that during the Prizegiving Colin advised his intention to stand down as organiser for this run. A big thank you must go to Colin and Judy for the time spent organising these runs over recent years. He has put his own mark on it and has had the good numbers attending. Thank you so much Colin and Judy – your work, with the many challenges that came along the way has been much appreciated. Also, a big thank you all the branch members who came along to help with field tests and marshalling at First Church, in the Octagon, and at Brighton Domain. This event couldn’t happen without you.

Snippets: The Aviation Pioneer Glenn Curtis recorded 64 mph over a measured mile in New York in 1903 on his home built V twin motorcycle, this speed was never ratified. Two years later Henri Cissac clocked 87 mph on a 1500cc Peugeot V twin, the first official high speed recorded, ever since it has been a race to set higher standards. 1920 100 mph Gene Walker Indian Daytona Beach. 1930 150 mph Joseph Wright Zenith/ JAP Cork Ireland. 1956 200mph Wilhelm Herz NSU Bonneville USA. 1970 250mph Don Vesco Yamaha Bonneville USA. 1975 300 mph Don Vesco Yamaha Bonneville USA. 2006 350mph Chris Carr. BUB seven Bonneville USA (2997cc). 2010 370mph Rocky Robinson Ack Attack Bonneville USA. Almost all these record breakers were with 1000cc motors or often larger, the most impressive was the 1956 speed of 200mph by NSU, a streamliner but only 499cc. The speed was actually 210.64 mph. Just months before in July 1955 the outright world record speed was broken here in New Zealand by Russell Wright at 185 mph. The 1000cc Vincent ran this speed on the narrow Tram Road in Canterbury.

MIDWEEK LUNCH TIME RUN TO KAKA POINT November 2020 A good number of our members travelled down to Kaka Point to enjoy a leisurely lunch at the Point Café. Just enough room for all of us and the 10 members who joined us from South Otago. Ian McDonald then took those who were interested to a Maori Cemetery for an informative tour by the caretaker. Many of us were fascinated by a photograph taken at the beach on a typical Carnival day in the 70’s. It would have been a good challenge to see who could identify all the vehicles that were parked bumper to bumper on the grass verge and roadside. There was not a lot of space for the people as these were really jammed in. Vauxhalls, Chevrolets, Fords, to name a few. These were the days when everyone came along to the beach to watch Surf Lifesaving Crews from around the region compete for the many trophies that were up for grabs.
COMBINED OTAGO AND SOUTH OTAGO BRANCH PICNIC Wednesday 2nd December I hear a good number of our members joined members of South Otago Branch for a picnic lunch at Mount Stuart Reserve. Some took a walk along the river and others did the walk to the Railway Tunnel further up the road. They weren’t able to get into the tunnel, which is fenced off for safety reasons. Thanks to Gaynor Falconer and Ian and Wilma McDonald for liaising with us in order for this to happen. Also to those who provided those treats that were shared around.

Our 2021 show is scheduled for 21st of March. We would love to have a bit of a car show added to the festivities. We have a BIG show planned. It started in lockdown……. Episode 6 from Trevor Kempton Not much progress to show on the GT380 since my last report but many tedious hours spent getting the painted bits ready for re-spray. The tank and one headlight bracket responded well to vapour blasting which revealed only a couple of leaded dents. The second bracket was well munted but my friend Marcel obliged with a new one and, better still, it is in the original J model red. However, New Zealand’s balance of trade with Holland took a steep dive when that card payment went through! The plastic bits proved very interesting and as I stripped up to 5 coats of paint they told quite a story. The left hand sidecover had the original red overlain by an undercoat, a red respray, a filler coat and an equally thick black topcoat yard broom applied; the same as the tank. The right hand cover’s original colour was blue and I suspect the whole bike got it’s red respray when this arrived. The light shell, however, appears to be missing an original colour and also arrived in time for the red re-spray. So probably a prang requiring a replacement sidecover acquired second hand and a new headlight shell. Likely also explains the tidy instrument casing and the 23,000 mile speedo reading! I do have a 1.25m cardboard box which arrived from the UK over Christmas. I haven’t opened it yet, but it appears Mr or Ms Higgspeed under-promised and delivered two weeks earlier than expected. If only the electroplater……………!

VCC EXTEND STARTING GRIDS You will no doubt be aware that it is now OFFICIAL that eligibility of cars competing in VCC Races and other competitive Events has been extended from 31 Dec 1960 to 31st Dec 1965. This is a welcome and well-overdue move to help re-build and strengthen our dwindling starting grids and look forward to seeing some new Saloon, Sports & Racing vehicles on the track. NATIONAL VINTAGE CAR RALLY (1919 -1931)
EASTER 2021 - Friday 2nd - Monday 5th April This will be a non-competitive rally, based on fun and friendship and will comply with all National Event Rules. Entry forms will be out in January 2021. South Canterbury Swapmeet is the Saturday before. The Veteran Vintage Tour will commence after this, the Nat Vintage Rally. Make a holiday of it and combine the 3 events run by the same branch. GET YOUR ACCOMMODATION SORTED NOW for Easter Weekend. There are other big events on that weekend so we have secured accommodation at Girls High Hostel at reasonable rates
