Welcome to 2020 - while the weather at times felt more like winter I hope that everyone has had a wonderful & relaxing Christmas and New Year and able to get out in your club vehicles. 2019 finished with the annual Christmas BBQ and it was great to see another good turn out. Thank you to everyone who helped on the day either in the preparation and cooking or in the serving and cleaning. Our club activities have already started with the annual VCC Peninsula (Jackson) Rally which was held on the 12th January and organised by Bill Veitch and Bruce Murray. Although this was held a week earlier than usual we had a good number of entrants on the drive down to Harwood for afternoon tea and the usual noggin and natter. The following weekend was the annual Dunedin to Brighton Run organised by Colin Winter ably assisted by Judy Winter and Mark Wilkinson. Prior to Christmas we only had 10 entries so to end up with 40 two days out was fantastic. The booking system for both the Octagon and the Brighton Domain have changed quite a lot over recent years and where previously we could contact the Council and it would be sorted; we now need to complete a grant application for funding, organise traffic management, a health and safety plan for both sites and also book both sites. The Council are in the process of upgrading the booking system which created a few headaches especially in the week leading in to the event. The other “headache” was that even through we had contacted the Mayors office prior to the local body election to arrange for the either the new mayor or deputy mayor to attend, neither appeared to realise the significance of our event and both declined for various reasons. Thankfully Cr Lee Vandervis came to our rescue and for those in the Octagon I’m sure you will agree he added extra vibrancy to the start of the run - so much so that the entrants want us to invite him back. A decision for another day. The annual Best of British is being held on the 9 th March and as per previous years The V.C.C will be looking after the finish which will be at the Portobello Reserve. I have a couple of helpers already however would love another couple so we can get entrants through the gate and down onto the paddock as quickly as possible. The charity for 2020 is the local Coastguard and the marque is Triumph and Standards. Please contact me if you are available to help on the day. On the 29th March I will be travelling to Wellington to represent the branch at the National Executive meeting. There will be time available during the monthly branch meeting at the end of February to discuss items of business that will be coming up however you are welcome to phone or email me if you are not able to be at the meeting. I will be on holiday from the 10 th - 25th March and will be checking my cell phone and emails from time to time. As usual all events are advertised in the branch magazine. Dunedin to Brighton 2020 - Traffic Management Issues The 66th Dunedin - Brighton Veteran Rally was a fantastic success however it has been marred by an incident that happened while the vehicles were travelling from First Church to the Octagon. As I have mentioned in my Chairman’s report we are required to organise and pay for traffic management for any and all road closures. Alongside this we also need to complete a health and safety plan - both of which are legal requirements. For the start of the annual Dunedin - Brighton Rally this relates to the central carriageway in the Octagon and, as this is the only part of the road that we need to close, it is the only part that requires us to arrange traffic management. All other roads are deemed to be open and road rules apply. During his drivers briefing at First Church Colin advised all entrants that they would be leaving in numerical order and travel around Moray Place to George Street where they were to turn left into George Street so they could proceed in correct order into the Octagon where they would be parked in order by the parking marshalls. The Dunedin - Brighton Rally is unique in that it is the only event we organise where entrants gather at a meeting point and then travel in convoy to the Octagon. Unfortunately an entrant chose to take a short cut up Stuart Street and not follow the instructions given 5 minutes earlier. Entrants travelling behind chose to follow the leader and also proceeded up Stuart Street which was in direct contravention of the traffic management plan that was lodged. This problem was further exacerbated by an unknown member of the public blocking the left hand entry into the Octagon forcing members to turn to the right and travel against traffic on an open road. Both actions nearly caused the Traffic Management staff to order us from the Octagon on the day and also put in jeopardy the branch being able to book the carriageway for future events. It also created unnecessary extra work for the parking marshalls trying to get vehicles in order, for Colin and Mark as organisers who were called to an on-site meeting with Traffic Management and also for myself as I needed to compile a grid order so that Dougal would be able to match the right vehicle to his commentary. Subsequently a report was lodged to the Council by both the Traffic Management staff and the NZTA which lead to a “please explain�. All actions have been extremely embarrassing for Colin and Mark as the rally organisers and to the branch in general. Can I please remind all members that regardless of what event you are on, you are to comply with the instructions of the organisers - both verbal and written. It is a basic rule of rallying that you follow the rally instructions and not the person in front of you. At this stage we may be allowed to book the Octagon again for 2021 and if we are successful I have no doubt that we will be on notice by the Dunedin City Council, the Traffic Management Company and also NZTA. This could also extend to any other event that the Otago branch organises. I have requested that in future the route from the meeting point will be included in all rally packs so entrants not only have it verbally but also in writing. I have also requested that a member of the organising committee is stationed on the corner of Moray Place and Stuart Street prior to the entrants leaving First Church to stop any entrants turning into Stuart Street. Xmas lunch at Toko Mouth 4th December 2019 Having a week off work gave me the opportunity to attend one of our mid week events. South Otago branch had invited Otago members to join them on the Xmas picnic being held at the Toko Mouth domain. There were about 42 members attending, with 14 from Otago. The scenery from Milton through to Toko Mouth is quite interesting and although it is close to the city this was my first visit to the area. I would expect a few eyes were glancing skywards given the thunderstorm that had rolled through the day before however thankfully the weather gods were in our favour and we had a lovely settled afternoon with a slight breeze. Part of the activities on the day included a gramophone serenading us with music of yesteryear and a Thermette Race. Gil & Ruth Edmunds and Colin Winter represented Otago branch with their thermettes and Colin held up the honour of the branch coming third. This was a wonderful relaxing afternoon and I know both branches are looking at more inter-branch events again next year. NB: Ladies Run in March has been bought forward to join with the Vintage Post Vintage Tour – the events calendar for February and March is very full and we needed to make this change. I have a pile of different ones at the moment as we head into a busy few months of motoring.
Swapmeets - I have received a number of notices for swapmeets happening around the country over the next few months. Please check individual branch newsletters on the VCC website to find further information for these. There is simply to many to include in our own newsletter. They are listed under the calendar of events. Wings and Wheels Club Display – Sunday 1st of March - we are still needing you, as members of the branch to advise us if you would like to put your vehicle on display during the Wings and Wheels Display. This will give you free entry to the event. Numbers are needed so that the branch can secure a site big enough to display your vehicles. Please advise you branch secretary via email or phone.
Best of British Day – More Marshalls are still needed. Please contact Nicola Wilkinson South Island Club Captain’s Tour - Entry forms are out – and close on the 14th of February. Please let me know if you need one. Library Roster: We have had a few members pull out of the library Roster. If you can spare a few hours on a Friday evening every 5-6 weeks please let us know. Thanks VIC Applications – please note - VIC Application forms have been updated again. When completing these forms please ensure that you have the most up to date form titled Sept 2019 – Check the VCC website. –These continue to be updated as procedures change etc. Other Branch Rally Entry Forms - as you will see there are a lot of events happening in and around our region over the next 6 months. I email details to all members who have email address’s. There are sometimes a few copies in the clubrooms, please ensure you leave at least one copy there, so that others can copy them. Photocopier is available. NNB: Please if you are planning to enter a local event, and running late with entry forms, please contact the organizer by phone or email to let them know you are coming. They need to know numbers for printing the instructions, and catering purposes for some events. Spare Parts Shed – Parts shed is usually open every Wednesday morning, and Friday evenings when the clubrooms are open. Reminder – see if you can effectively recycle your parts before scrapping them. NO TYREs by request. 10
The nearest AED defibrillator to the clubrooms is on the outside wall of the 4 Square shop on corner of Bayview Road. Please make a point of familiarising yourself of its location – Never know when it might be needed. SOLD OR SELLING YOUR VIC’D VCC VEHICLE ENSURE YOU SEND VIC CARD ALONG WITH CHANGE OF OWNERSHIP DETAILS TO NATIONAL OFFICE – Remember this paperwork is the property of the National Club – this is their way of keeping records of Vehicle ownership etc. Vero Insurance Scheme - Just a reminder, the VCC Vero insurance scheme is set up for those with current VCC membership. If they have insurance cover under the VCC Scheme with Vero, current membership is a requirement.
BEST OF BRITISH CHARITY MOTORING DAY – 8TH MARCH This year our charity for the Best of British Charity Motoring Day is Coastguard Dunedin Inc. Manned by volunteers, the stats for the year between 1 July 2018 to 30 June 2019 give a good indication of how valuable this service is: 27 Volunteers, 1,529 volunteer hours, 1 rescue vessel, 12 calls for help, 19 people brought home safely. Coastguard Dunedin was started in November 2005 by a group of local boating enthusiasts under the name Harbour Rescue Inc. In May 2006 they joined Coastguard and changed their name to Coastguard Dunedin. The current rescue vessel was purchased in 2012 following a fundraising campaign. This vessel is getting old and the buoyancy tanks are suffering somewhat with UV deterioration, as the boat is trailered because there is no covered area to house it. Coastguard Dunedin currently operate from the workshop of one of the volunteers and the Portobello fire station hall. Following the America’s Cup in 2021, Coastguard Dunedin have been promised one of the 22-foot chase boats to replace their current craft. But this brings its own problems. While the craft is ideal for our conditions and requirements it is too big to trailer so now storage is becoming a worry. Also, the boat will have to be fitted out with the appropriate storage and kit. This will all need funding. Consequently, Coastguard Dunedin’s major project is to work with a number of local search and rescue organisations on a shared resource centre in the upper port area, including a boatshed for the rescue craft.
We are very pleased to get behind this organization and hopefully raise funds to assist with their building needs. We urge you to come and join us on March 8th and support them!

Jackson Rally 2020 - Report Sunday 12th of January dawned bright and sunny and I think that that was enough to encourage the drivers out for a run. The organisers had 5 entries on Wednesday prior. Yet on the day we had 20 + cars arrive for the run. As always, late entries like this make it very difficult for the organisers when it comes to printing and catering. After a briefing from Bill Veitch everyone headed south over Sidey Street, and a drive through the subdivision at the top of Hillhead Road, before heading down Blackhead and onto Waldronville. A drive back through Fairfield, Green Island and up Stevensons Road to Caversham. Onto Portsmouth Drive and up Doon Street to Highcliff Road. A nice drive along the top road to Portobello and onto Harwood for afternoon tea and some social time. There were a couple of cars which didn’t make it to Harwood due to mechanical problems, but they did manage to get themselves home again. I enjoyed being passenger with Eleanor Harrison in her Chrysler, while Donna Roxburgh did the navigation. Was great to see some of our newer members come out today. Matt and Laura had their new addition to their fleet out today.- their 1974 Triumph 2500 Estate. Thanks to Lynn (Bruce Murray’s sister) for putting the afternoon tea together. After a few calculations between the organisers Bill Veitch presented the trophies: The G.C. Jackson Memorial Trophy was presented to Malcolm Eunson who was driving his 1971 MGB. The Mary B. Jackson Trophy was presented to Kevin Mason who was riding his 1957 Francis Barnett Motorbike. Marion

DUNEDIN - BRIGHTON RUN This year we were blessed with lovely warm weather, so that we could all enjoy travelling in those beautiful veteran vehicles, and relax in the sunshine at Brighton Domain while having lunch and watching entrants participate in the field tests. We meet at First Church to line up in order of departure and for a briefing before driving to the Octagon for public display. This year we had Cr Lee Vandervis welcome the entrants and visitors to the display. While Dougal Stevenson commentated, Lee flagged of the vehicles in his own special way – even helping to push start some of those more stubborn ones. From the Octagon we headed south to Caversham and turned onto South Road before turning left on to Sidey Street – this seemed to be an easier drive, than Hawthorne Avenue. We then followed the route down Stevenson’s Road and into Green Island before continuing on to Brighton Domain. There were a good number of spectators and photographers on route. A bit of friendly banter along the way as those faster vehicles managed to overtake some of the slower ones on the straight roads towards Brighton. Thanks to all the marshalls, who were out in the Octagon, time keeping and at Brighton Domain. Your work is much appreciated, and very necessary. Thanks also to David Cunningham and his team who set up some challenging field tests again this year. On involved the navigator having to get out of the car and hit balls through hoops with a hockey stick – not as easy as you may think. The Pearce family were out in full force with their three Sunbeam’s entered – all winning 1st, 2nd and 3rd in their class. Nevin Gough and his partner Kelly, daughter Jenifer and friend all dressed up to the era of the Buick, they looked great with the hood down and smiles on their faces Congratulations to Travis and Margaret Michelle on gaining 1 st Place overall in their 1917 Moon – this is the first time they have entered the Brighton Run. You would have normally seen Travis marshalling in the Octagon. Bryan and I were again fortunate to have been offered a Model T Roadster to use for the weekend. During the Prizegiving Dinner Colin Pearce was presented with his 60-year badge. This award is well deserved, and we need to also acknowledge the support Joan has given him and the club over all this time. They both work well as a team and continue to participate in many events around the country. Their family, son, daughter and grandson, also get involved with the veteran motoring, and this has enabled Colin and Joan to continue using their Sunbeams whenever they can. Congratulations Colin. Thanks also to Colin Winter for his hard work in insuring that everything runs like clockwork. He too has family support – with Judy never far away. Gary and Sarah and young Braxton were out in the 1900 Wolseley again this year. A few of us even spotted Braxton having a little practice behind the steering wheel. Sunday morning saw a good number of us drive up to Carey’s Bay for lunch before out of town entrants headed home. There were two large cruise ships in port, so the town of Port Chalmers was humming with tourists, and the road was busy with buses ferrying people back and forwards to the city. Marion 14

The Moped Rally: 1 December 2019 This year we had a change of destination – Aramoana. Sunday 1st of December dawned very foggy. I could hardly see my hand in front of my face. Not great for mopeding but as 10.30 am got closer, brighter weather came. The departure point was the car park at the northern end of the Dunedin Railway Station. One of the Oamaru bikes was not a happy start-up – the cause I believe was lack of spark, so a new plug was found and fitted. But alas – still not enough spark to fire the wee one up so it returned to the trailer where it came from. After Andrew gave out instructions on the route and spoke on what to watch out for, 15 blue smokers headed down the road past Forsyth Barr Stadium towards Port Chalmers. Once through Ravensbourne we turned off Highway 88 onto Burkes Drive, staying on Old Port Chalmers Road. Once at Port we carried on past Carey’s Bay Hotel and Fishing Boat Wharf, stopping at Deborah Bay Green to read the noticeboard telling us about the small torpedo boats – they used the slip for service and reloading. Quite an interesting bay in its day. From there to Aramoana, a nice winding road for mopeds. Once we negotiated six speed-humps we were onto the domain at Aramoana where Colin and Jude Winter, Maureen Pledger, Ruth Edmonds and Donna Roxburgh had meat patties, sausages and onions cooking on the BBQ. All that was left to do was for Ken, Gill and myself to boil the Thermettes. It was nice to have Russ and Lorraine’s company for lunch as well. The return trip was back to Port then round to Back Beach, then rider’s choice back to the Railway Station in Dunedin. All 15 arrived safe and sound.
