In the Driving Seat What a fantastically hot day we had for the Taieri Tour at the start of November. This year’s event was organised by Travis Michelle and Ross Jefferson who planned an interesting tour incorporating silent checks and cryptic clues. At Outram we had a variety of field tests. Thank you both for a great day - the feedback I have received from entrants is that they thoroughly enjoyed their day. Thanks also must go to Stuart and Lyn Neil who were on the registration desk and to Bill and Susan Partel for arranging the club-rooms for the prize-giving and dinner. Special guests for the day were our Honorary Secretary/Treasurer Michael Lavendar and his wife Sherryn representing the National President in presenting 50 year badges to Ivan Bennett and Bob Herron. Thanks must go to Peter and Beth Daniel who looked after Michael and Sherryn during the tour. Congratulations to all prize winners and to Ivan and Bob on their badge presentations. Coming up before the end of the year is the Moped Rally on the 1st December and the Christmas BBQ on the 8th December. The club rooms will be closed from Friday 20th December re-opening again on the 10th January just in time for the Jackson Rally on the 12th January. As this is the final Road Runner for 2019, Mark and I would like to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable Christmas and New Year and we look forward to seeing you at the Jackson Rally and the Dunedin to Brighton Rally. Best Wishes for Christmas and New Year - I would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Thank you all for your contributions and support over the past year. Looking forward to another busy year ahead. Safe travels over the holiday period. Annual Membership Fees – Fees are now well overdue. This will be the final Roadrunner you receive if you have not paid them. You should have received your new membership card by now. That will indicate that your membership is still current Swapmeets - I have received a number of notices for swapmeets happening around the country over the next few months. Please check individual branch newsletters on the VCC website to find further information for these. There is simply to many to include in our own newsletter. They are listed under the calendar of events. Library Roster: We have had a few members pull out of the library Roster. If you can spare a few hours on a Friday evening every 5-6 weeks please let us know. Thanks. VIC Applications – please note - VIC Application forms have been updated again. When completing these forms please ensure that you have the most up to date form titled Sept 2019 – Check the VCC website. – These continue to be updated as procedures change etc. Other Branch Rally Entry Forms - as you will see there are a lot of events happening in and around our region over the next 6 months. I email details to all members who have email address’s. There are sometimes a few copies in the clubrooms, please ensure you leave at least one copy there, so that others can copy them. Photocopier is available. NNB: Please if you are planning to enter a local event, and running late with entry forms, please contact the organizer by phone or email to let them know you are coming. They need to know numbers for printing the instructions, and catering purposes for some events. Spare Parts Shed – Parts shed is usually open every Wednesday morning, and Friday evenings when the clubrooms are open. Reminder – see if you can effectively recycle your parts before scrapping them. NO TYREs by request. The nearest AED defibrillator to the clubrooms is on the outside wall of the 4 Square shop on corner of Bayview Road. Please make a point of familiarising yourself of its location – Never know when it might be needed. SOLD OR SELLING YOUR VIC’D VCC VEHICLE ENSURE YOU SEND VIC CARD ALONG WITH CHANGE OF OWNERSHIP DETAILS TO NATIONAL OFFICE – Remember this paperwork is the property of the National Club – this is their way of keeping records of Vehicle ownership etc. Vero Insurance Scheme - Just a reminder, the VCC Vero insurance scheme is set up for those with current VCC membership. If they have insurance cover under the VCC Scheme with Vero, current membership is a requirement. 8
2020 South Island Club Captains Tour I usually say I have some of my favourite roads to share with you and this tour is no different. I was pondering the other day about what makes a favourite road and I’m thinking it is pretty much any road that you have a good experience on. That also however depends on your state of mind at the time. There are a couple of roads that I have travelled as a case of necessity where fuel is few and far between and these roads have not become favorites! For obvious reasons. I have travelled the road from Wanaka to Christchurch and back approximately 450 times over the last 37 years and while I don’t hate this road, I am not unhappy to not have to do it so often now. On the mornings where you are relaxed and just enjoying the ride, I find these are the times I most enjoy, so the road I find myself on becomes a favourite road. For my job in Rangiora I find myself on some new rural roads and some days I have to pinch myself to make sure it is real - I love driving and to do it in an older vehicle with like minded people is just heaven. Both Tracy & I hope you enjoy your time with us and if this is your first time, you will find I enjoy gravel even more then tar seal. This year we are heading south through the Molesworth - I’m hoping it will look completely different going in the other direction. I am particularly excited to show you Mangles Valley. We stumbled on it quite by chance and it shot to immediate stardom. As you can imagine, it has a gravel component! Some roads we have travelled before in part but this enables us to link in with other neat places. The day from Richmond to Blenheim is a short drive as it will allow some maintenance on vehicles and some maintenance on persons and their cladding. The accommodation list will enable you to make your motel bookings early and the entry form will follow soon as there are still a couple of meal prices to nail down. Tracy and I are looking forward to meeting you all again and possibly some new recruits. So welcome along and enjoy the ride.

That Mad Dash The history of this trip is probably by now folklore in the minds of most of our readers. The fact that it was done in 1965 in a car 35 years old was quite an event in itself. However, to do it again when the car is now 90 years old makes it more of an event. Of the other cars accompanying it on this 2019 trip all were over 50 years, the youngest around 65. Setting off, as did the original at 4am, we left on Friday 8 November in an attempt to match the same schedule. It was a bit of a mission. There were many differing conditions. Eg: an abundance of heavy trucks at that time of the day, not to mention tourists, and extreme weather conditions. At one point, my car was going downhill into a head wind in 3rd gear barely making 30 mph. When I threw the car out of gear, it stopped! Then the rain on the West Coast was, to put it mildly, continuous and torrential. No doubt you have all heard varying reports as it became obvious early in the trip that we should not keep too close together and simply make every effort to complete the journey. So, each journeyman has their own recounter. Nine cars left Dunedin. Some more joined for some or the rest of the trip. A huge contingent of vintage Austins met them at Springfield to wish them safely on their way. Another contingent of Central Otago VCC members met them at Knights Point to travel back through to Central Otago the next day. And, one Austin 7 arrived back in Dunedin on schedule at 8 pm on Saturday 9 November. All but one car arrived back one way or another. Would we do it again? Of Course, but go the other way next time. It was vintage motoring as it was intended to be, a great experience and a van load of fun. David Mills

The Otago Branch invites you to take part in the 65th Dunedin – Brighton Veteran Car Run. The Mayor will flag the vehicles away from the Octagon And we will then drive to Brighton for field tests and lunch. The event is open to all Veteran Vehicles built prior to 1st January 1919. PERIOD COSTUME TO THE ERA OF YOUR VEHICLE IS ENCOURAGED. 11
You are welcome at our clubrooms Friday Night. For a Noggin and Natter and Supper and Entry packs will also be available from 7.30pm The event will start from the First Church Carpark – Enter the Carpark off Lower Moray Place and follow Marshalls directions. Rally packs will be available at 8.45am. and the briefing will be at 9.15am sharp. The cars will leave the car park in number order for the short journey to the Octagon for the public display. We need to be in the Octagon by 9.45am Entrants will depart the Octagon from 11.00a.m. for Brighton. There will be a timed section at some stage during the run to Brighton. Field Tests will be held at Brighton Domain during the lunch break. Concours Judging will start at First Church, continue in the Octagon and if required conclude at Brighton Domain. The Concours is a separate competition and is not taken into account in the rally results. Dinner and Prizegiving will be at The Otago Gold Club, 125 Balmacewen Road, Dunedin SUNDAY we intend to have a leisurely amble to Careys Bay for natter and lunch, at your own cost. The Otago Aero Club 2020 Wings & Wheels Day Invitation The Otago Aero Cubs MORE FM Wings and Wheels is back in 2020 and we would like to invite your Club Members to display their “pride & Joy”. In 2020 we are inviting clubs of all makes and models from around Otago and further afield to join us, so we hope for a great turn out and a sunny day! Alongside cars, and aeroplanes on display there will be market stalls, live music, a huge variety of food options, FREE children’s entertainment, and plenty of other entertainment to keep the whole family happy for hours.

47th Taieri Tour 2nd November 2019– Report
Following much discussion after last year’s Tour Travis Michelle agreed to assist Ross Jefferson with organising this years event. Wingatui Hall works well for morning tea and start point now, as parking at the clubrooms on Forbury Road has become more congested on Saturday mornings in recent years. 47 entries with a good number in each class. Entrants travelled from as far as Christchurch to attend our Tour. With the option of Short or Long route we were sent on our way to tour the plains - cris crossing each other’s paths as we motored on a mix of seal and gravel roads. Yes, most of us had not travelled some of those gravel roads, as in recent times we endeavour to avoid them. With a time section in the middle of it all the time keepers were kept busy, as they were the start and finish point. A good number of silent checks in the form on black letters on white boards had to be found along the way. Also a marshall sitting at a compulsory stop sign, recorded too many people not stopping at that point. We finished at Outram Rugby Club grounds for a selection of field tests and lunch. It was great to see younger people getting involved this year. Travis’ son Gareth gained 1st Veteran driving Travis’ 1917 Moon (a recent addition to his fleet of vehicles), Robert Michelle was driving a Model A and granddaughter Shannon gained 1 st in the Vintage section driving a Model A. Nic Walmsley came along in her father’s 1952 Daimler, Ross Jefferson had children and grandchildren out there helping with the field tests. This year we welcomed Michael and Sherryn Lavendar, who were hosted by Peter and Beth Daniell, in their 1951 Vauxhall, for the tour. At the Prizegiving Dinner in the evening Michael presented both Ivan Bennett and Bob Herron with their 50 Year Awards. It was great to see them achieve this award, while they are still able to participate in club activities. We thank Ross and Travis for the time spent organising this event and all the other members who helped out in the back ground, with marshalling, fieldtests and managing the details at Wingatui Hall.
Clutha Rally Report
Bryan and I travelled in the back seat of Kevin and Val Mason’s Cortina to Balclutha, as ours now has the motor out of it. The run started from the Town and Country Club, where we had morning tea and briefing. The crew elected me to be navigator. That was either a good or bad move, as the first few instructions even got her confused, despite the fact that she grew up there. That was in the time section part as well. Some back tracking and we got sorted! Travelling out to Stirling, onto the beautiful Inch Clutha, then to Kaitangata. Back through Balclutha and off to Owaka – and another couple of roads new to us, where the whitebaiters were out hoping for a good catch. A visit to a book and soap shop in Owaka and then turned back to travel over to Kaka Point for lunch in the sun. A good selection of cars were lined up there for everyone to view as we enjoyed the chance to catch up with fellow members. Was good to have the opportunity to view those young people out in the surf practicing their surf lifesaving skills. We travelled back to Balclutha to be there by 3pm for prize giving. Congratulations to Nevin and Kelly 1st Veteran Class in their Model T, Stu and Lyn Neil 1st Overall in their Dodge, Kevin and Val 1st P80 class in their Cortina – maybe it was the delay in the time section that gained them this placing. � 16

For the G.C. Jackson Memorial Trophy This rally marks the beginning of motoring events in the Branch for the New Year. G.C. (Gerie) Jackson was a long-time member of the branch who lived on the Otago Peninsula and loved its sights, so close to but so different from the city. Not long before his death he raised the idea of this rally and outlined his concept of what it should be to the Branch Committee. When the Committee later decided to take up his idea his family donated the trophy, which bears his name.
The Mary B. Jackson Trophy For Best Motorcycle at the VCC Otago Jackson Peninsula Rally Donated by Bill Veitch and Ron Gilbert in memory of Mary Jackson MA (Hons) wife of Gerry Jackson who instigated the Peninsula Rally. Mary was a BSA and Norton rider at a time when few women rode motorcycles. Mary nee Kibblewhite had a distinguished academic career earning University scholarships and prizes. She later taught at Otago Girls High School and St Hilda’s Collegiate School. The trophy is a Norton kick-starter shaft. This year's rally will take place on Sunday 12th January 2020 If possible, the result of the afternoon competition will be announced during afternoon tea, before everyone returns home, failing that the result will be posted in the Clubrooms on the following Friday. The overall winner will be awarded the G.C. Jackson Memorial trophy The event is open to all classes of vehicle accepted by the V.C.C. of N.Z. All entrants must be financial members. Those who wish, are welcome to take part in a modern vehicle, but will not appear in the final results.

50 YEAR AWARD PRESENTATION 2019 Robert Herron Joined 28/3/1968
As a new member Bob Herron joined Gore Branch then transferred to Otago Branch in 2016 after he had moved to Mosgiel. He didn’t hold any roles on the Gore Branch Committee due to mostly running various 7-day businesses. He was on their rally Committee for Gore’s second Festival Rally in 1969 and was involved in organising a Motor Show that the Gore Branch ran in conjunction with Gore’s Festival Week in 1969. Bob served on the Gore branch Social Committee in 1970 and again in 1972. He was co-founder of the Gore Safari Rallies which were held yearly for many years. They were family camping rallies, the first being a run into the Nevis Valley and staying overnight at Bannockburn. He has actively rallied throughout his membership, particularly in the 70’s when the 1928 Model A Tudor Sedan that he restored was reasonably new. His interest is in the older classes of vehicles ie. Vintage Model A Fords and Veteran Model T’s. The restoration of the Four Square Model T Van was also a project for him. ‘Mr Four Square’ is now based at Foodstuff’s Head Office in Christchurch and is now used more regularly attending Four Square celebrations, shop refitting’s and new store openings throughout the South Island. The International Rallies he participated in were the 1972 Nelson Rally which was the 2nd rally his new restoration completed and 1980 Rotorua. Bob had the Model A shipped to Sydney in 1978 for the International held there. He and Claire had participated in many National Rallies. He was also a rallyist at the first Gore Festival Rally in 1969 and before to the rallies that went to Te Anau in a borrowed car. Since coming to Dunedin Bob has been a regular entrant in the Dunedin -Brighton Run. Bob and Myra are looking forward to attending more of the local rallies in the future and meeting fellow members of the branch. 20
50 YEAR AWARD PRESENTATION 2019 Ivan Bennett Joined 31/7/1969
After winning the Massetti Cup for sports car racing in the Dunedin Festival Road Race in 1961 Ivan retired from Sports Car racing. The late Dave Mills of Speed Well Garage suggested that Ivan and his family would be well suited to restore a 1922 Lorraine Dietrich from the parts of three Lorraine’s from the Waitaki Valley and Central Otago. Ivan recalls his fellow friend and branch member the late Ken Walmsley buying his Chrysler from Tony Carrol in 1965, leading to their deciding to join the VCC, as the parts department and library were good sources of parts and information. The major task of restoring the Lorraine, was duly undertaken from 1964 until 1980 when the Lorraine was completed enough for Ivan, Joan their family and the late Cliff Bennett to travel to Rotorua for the 1980 International Rally. Ivan gives much thanks to the Wardell (original owners) and the McAtamney families for their help with finding the parts on their farms to build the car. Great credit must go to Ivan’s late father, Sam, his late brother Cliff and his brother Jim for their skills. Over the years other enjoyable International Rallies have been attended. Palmerston North 1992, Christchurch 1997, and Invercargill 2006. A feature of the Invercargill Rally was to have a photo of the Lorraine leaving Queen’s Park, Invercargill on the front cover of Beaded Wheels – issue no 278 February/March 2006. Many National Rallies and Club Rallies have been enjoyed in the South Island. All these were with the company of Ken and Robin Walmsley (1926 Chrysler). Ivan has helped with Taieri Tours, Brighton Runs and the recent 2016 Festival of Historic Motoring in Dunedin. The Lorraine has been in many car shows, Auto spectaculars and featured further in Beaded Wheels and the Otago Daily Times. For many enjoyable years the VCC Outram Sub branch hosted the Branch Christmas BBQ at ‘Foot Rot Flats” up the Outram Glen. Still continuing for over 46 years is a New Years Day run to various places in Otago. Ivan and Joan have been pleased to have the Lorraine at a Wardell wedding and the family reunion. The Lorraine was at the Olveston Centennial in 2006. Wardell House is across the road from Olveston. The Lorraine has transported a Miss World, Miss New Zealand, Mayors, VIP’s folk from Rest Homes, Cure Kids, local brides and Outram families. Ivan was also Involved in the Refurbishment of the Branch Clubrooms in Forbury Road after if was purchased in the early 1990’s. 21
ART DECO WEEKEND 2020 A SPECIAL INVITATION FROM HBVCC Come to Napier and join the HBVCC for Art Deco Weekend 2020 from February 20th -23rd. Kindly sponsored again this year by Euro City Ltd In 2020 the Featured Group will be an A-Z of Motor Vehicles. We are aiming to have a motor vehicle representing each letter of the alphabet. This may be a make or model. There will be a mixture of cars, commercials and motorcycles. Also we expect a mix of veterans, vintage and PV’s… manufactured in UK, Europe and USA. We currently have several cars coming in 2020 that have not been to ADW before. These include NZ’s second Duesenberg, our first L29 Cord, and a Stutz to name a few. We are still looking for a “Napier” vehicle to represent the letter “N”. I am also trying to find the owner of the Willys Knight roadster circa 1929-31 era that has the unusual paint design on the doors. We would also like to get leads on vehicles or vehicle models starting with letters Q, U, X, Y, Z. Please email any leads or ideas to stevetrott@xtra.co.nz asap. For 2020 the annual rally is again on Friday and we plan to have a touring run plus a picnic lunch at a great lunch venue. On Saturday we will have the morning tea and car show and popular choice at the HBVCC clubrooms, followed by the grand parade. Sunday events include a breakfast surprise at the HBVCC clubrooms and the Gatsby picnic in the afternoon. There are many other ADT events to choose from on Friday and Saturday nights. Come and join the other 180 plus club eligible vehicles we expect to enter the 2020 Event. Go to the HBVCC website for an Entry Form. (www.hbvcc.org.nz). Entry forms for 2020 are available now. Accommodation in Napier is already filling up for Art Deco Weekend so book now to avoid disappointment. We suggest you plan to arrive in Napier on Thursday 20th so you can attend the Dinner at the Private Collection Clubrooms that evening.
