This time last year we were a week into a level 4 lockdown and the uncertain of not knowing how this would affect us. Twelve months on, we have learnt to live within the parameters of level one and able to continue with branch events. As we go to print, I will have just arrived back from the March National Executive meeting held in Wellington which was an all-day meeting held at the Mirimar Golf Course. A report from the meeting can be found in this edition of the Road Runner. Speaking of going to print, David Mills has just been to the printers to work on the draft copy of the branch history. After 3 years the end is now in sight. Once it has been checked by David and those who have contributed to the book, we should be ready to put this to bed. My heartfelt thanks to David for the time, effort and work he has put in to this project it was certainly more than we all envisaged. I encourage you all to get a copy of the book when it is published as it will be a work of art. During March was the Vintage Venture/ PV rally plus Ladies Run which unfortunately had a very small turnout. The committee have taken on board comments regarding how this event was advertised in the Road Runner and will look to make improvements in 2022. The weekend of 13/14 March was busy for the club with one group heading down to Gore for the overnight run and another group taking part in the annual Best of British Car Rally which this year went to the sportsground in Milton – some even combined the two. The Otago branch was well represented in Milton with some members being selected as having the best of their respective marque or winning prizes as part of the time trial. My thanks to Mark Wilkinson, Andrew and Donna Roxburgh for working the gate at the finish and also to the others who offered to help if required. I understand that everyone who went to the Gore weekend away had an enjoyable weekend away so my thanks to Kevin for organising this – it looks to now be a regular feature in the branch calendar of events. Coming up on the 24th April Kevin has arranged a tour of 3 members garages. Ladies – this is not just for the guys as I believe that there will be items of interest to suit everyone. Please see the advert in the Road Runner and come along to support a new initiative. Nicola. 7
VCC Executive Meeting – March 2021 Being the first March Executive meeting since last year’s lockdown it was great to catch up with a large group of delegates. You will be able to get a copy of all reports and minutes when available from Marion however I will give you the highlights. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. We were introduced to Robyn Ashworth who is the new Administration Manager. While Robyn does not have a VCC background, she has an extensive administration background. As she had only been in the role for three weeks, she received a “baptism by fire” attending her first exec meeting. 75th National AGM is being hosted by Canterbury Branch on Friday 13 th and Saturday 14th August at the Rydges Hotel in Latimer Square Christchurch. Being the 75th they are encouraging members to attend especially in club eligible vehicles. The programme for the weekend is: Friday morning – rally to an interesting lunch venue Friday evening – National Executive meeting – members are welcome to attend this as an observer. Saturday morning – National AGM Saturday afternoon – National Executive meeting will continue for delegates. For all other attendees there is the option of either a walking tour around the city centre or a guided bus tour including afternoon tea, Saturday evening – celebratory dinner Sunday morning – coffee, cars and bikes get together at the clubrooms. Registration forms will be available in May however it would be great to have a good contingent of Otago branch members at the weekend. There is plenty of motel accommodation close to the venue if you don’t want to stay at the hotel. It was planned to have a guest speaker from the NZTA however this was cancelled at the last minute as they felt they were not in a position to talk on the topics requested: 1. Converting fleet to electric and what this means to the VCC 2. Clean car import standards and how this affects club vehicles imported from overseas. 3. Warrant of Fitness requirements. Life Member and Vehicle Technical Committee member Roger White was able to give an update from a meeting he attended on behalf of the VCC with representatives from MOT, Low Volume Vehicle Technical Association and the Federation of Motoring. From what was mentioned at this meeting the clean air standard requirements from 2023 at this stage doesn’t appear to affect our existing fleet. Imports over 40 years old would be exempt while imports that are 30 – 40 years old could be affected however we could apply for an exemption. This situation will continue to be monitored by the Management committee and Vehicle Technical Committee.
We were reminded to continue with our Covid 19 tracing in club rooms, part sheds and also branch events – i.e.: Brighton Rally, Taieri Tour, Dunvegan etc. As an aside, the Best of British last weekend had its own Covid tracing QR code which are easy to create and print. We were also reminded to complete the Duty of Care checklists that are located in the branch manuals. This includes checking the club rooms 8
and parts sheds on a regular basis for hazards as well as looking for possible hazards on rally routes and pointing these out to entrants at the drivers briefing. There is a change to the Incorporated Societies Act bill being looked at by parliament which could affect the liability for branches so by showing that we have completed the checklist could be to our advantage. VCC National Day is being held on the 22nd August. Kaaren Smyllie from the Management Committee has been working with the National Cancer Society re this and the assistance they are going to provide re promoting the event looks promising. The event committee will liaise with the National Cancer Society, commission the poster design, advertising, provide design support and encouragement to branches. We need to let the event committee know by the 20th April what our plans are for the day so any suggestions, offer of help will be gratefully accepted. Notices of Motion. There will be two notices of motion to vote on this year. The first is regarding online membership which we have discussed in the past. The second was in relation to Special Interest Groups and is a result of an approach from a couple of one make club to the Management Committee to see if they could be affiliated to the VCC and to take advantage of what we can offer re administration etc. It could be a club that is struggling and rather than wind up they can apply for membership as a Special Interest Group Branch. They would still continue to have their own constitutions etc. and members would be eligible to participate in VCC events however would need to have a VCC eligible vehicle to be competitive – same as for existing members. The VCC constitution does not allow for these clubs to be affiliated to the VCC so the notice of motion is to allow for this provision should it be required in the future. Update to the branding – as I mentioned in my report following the 2019 AGM it was agreed at that AGM that we look at refreshing the club branding, logo etc. The recommended tagline is “Driving our History” and the new logo shows that we are the VCC and from New Zealand. There will be a power point presentation sent out once the logo has been tweaked following recommendations from the exec committee with the proposal being voted on at the National AGM. I have a copy of the design if you are interested. At this stage the club has only spent $1500 on the design so from what I saw was value for money. New National Office Computer Systems – the computer systems used by the National Office staff have not been updated for at least 25 years and are very archaic and time consuming. The new system is multi user friendly, allows for all member information to be captured in one area including financial information, vehicle information and VIC details. In time the plan is for branch secretaries to access information pertaining to the branch. Paying invoices online – there was a reminder to take care when paying funds to a VCC account online and make sure you pick up the correct bill payment details especially when paying membership fees as some members have paid these to another branch who’s bank account details were previously loaded. National Events – Central Otago will be organising a National Veteran Rally on the 30/31 October 2021 based around Cromwell. Wanganui are putting forward a bid to hold a National Commercial Rally in 2023 and Southland are organising a National Motorbike Rally in February 2023 just prior to the Burt Munro Challenge. Nicola

Entries usually close within two weeks of the event. NNB: Please if you are planning to enter a local event, and running late with entry forms, Please contact the organizer by phone or email to let them know you are coming. They need to know numbers for printing the instructions, and catering purposes for some events. LIBRARY: We have had a few members pull out of the library Roster. If you can spare a few hours on a Friday evening every 5-6 weeks please let us know. Thanks SPARE PARTS SHED: – Parts shed is usually open every Wednesday morning, and Friday evenings when the clubrooms are open. Reminder – see if you can effectively recycle your parts before scrapping them. NO TYREs by request.
VIC APPLICATIONS – please note - VIC Application forms have been updated – again PLEASE CHECK THAT ALL PAPERWORK/PHOTOS ARE PRESENT AND CORRECT BEFORE FORWARDING TO YOUR BRANCH VEHICLE REGISTRAR – It gets very time consuming when we need to contact you time and again to ensure everything is sorted.
The VIC/Authenticity Statement forms were altered back in October 2020 with regard to the VTC needing photos of the chassis/frame number and/or engine number of vehicles. Each application you make for a vehicle MUST include these along with the 3 identical photos (correct size) of the vehicle. Applications will be put on hold until these are supplied, if they do not accompany the application, when submitted to National Office. Please can you ensure that the application forms are completed fully, especially in regards to mileage, engine manufacturer, some history of the vehicle (even if it is only “purchased from Trade Me in April 1999”) and which Branch is completing the form. The Branch is often missing from Non-Member applications and my knowledge of small places in New Zealand is not that great so a Branch name would assist greatly. Kind Regards, Jo. ROADWORKS AROUND THE CLUBROOMS
There are still road works happening around the clubrooms. Just beware of the parking situation, as access to Bayview Road from Forbury Road is closed at present. ENTERTAINMENT BOOK - Digital version’s for the coming year are now available for sale via our branch. Due to a downturn in numbers attending the Bar and Library on Friday nights, it has been decided that from the start of March the Bar and Library will only be opened on the first and last Friday of the month.

VEHICLE RESTORATION AWARDS The main function of the event is to encourage all financial branch members to present their club eligible vehicles, and for all club members to witness and celebrate the occasion, and generally have a fun day. All entrants will be required to drive their vehicle to the venue, and provide a restoration resume with the vehicle (to be supplied). At the completion of the formal procedure, all entrants will be required to join with other members in a non-competitive restoration run to a venue for afternoon tea, and presentation. This is the only qualifying requirement for the issue of the Restoration Achievement Award, which will be presented during afternoon tea. The Restoration awards will be competed for in two sections :
Restoration Achievement Award This award will be issued to all entrants who have entered a club eligible vehicle for the event, irrespective of whether the vehicle has bene restored, or an original vehicle ‘tidied up’. To qualify for acceptance, the vehicle must have been completed, re-registered, warranted, and put back on the road within the 12 month period. There is no judging associated with this award. The award will be presented to all entrants to acknowledge the commitment and attainment of the member in making a club eligible vehicle roadworthy. Restoration Trophy Award It will be totally at the discretion of the owner to enter a restored vehicle for judging and to compete for the Restoration Trophy. To qualify for acceptance for the Restoration Trophy, the vehicle would have undergone a significant restoration, in addition to the requirements in the previous section. The judging will be carried out by appointed branch members, and based on the finish and presentation of the vehicle. The judges will report to the Chief Judge who will adjudicate on any matters arising. The trophy award will be issued to the vehicle judged with the greatest aggregate of points above a ‘bench mark’. Any vehicle failing to meet this creteria will not be considered for the trophy. The recipient of the Restoration Trophy will be announced at the Branch AGM. With no correspondence entered into. All Restoration Trophy entrants will receive a Restoration Achievement Award. Entry Conditions The main objective is to have a simple, fair, equitable event with minimal rules, however it has been found necessary to incorporate the following : All entrants will be required to ‘fill in’ and return the appropriate entry form, with the historic details of the vehicle, together with before and after restoration photos. These documents will be retained by the Branch to form an informal historic register of our member’s vehicles Owner of vehicle must be a financial member of the Branch All entrants will be required to drive their vehicle to the event, and either participate in the restoration run, or provide proof of having attended another club event during the previous 12 months. All vehicles presented must have a current WOF and registration. Once a vehicle has been submitted for either of these awards, it may not be resubmitted for a minimum period of 10 years, unless there are some substantiated reasons ( ie vehicle rebuilt following a major accident or damage).

George Martin has set the date and Route for the much anticipated Coast to Coast Run. This will be going ahead regardless of numbers. The plan is to see the SUNRISE at 8.21am on John Wilson Drive on Saturday Morning, then departing to Travel SH1 to Milton, Right at SH8 Clarksville Morning tea at Lawrence Continue SH8 to Alexandra and Cromwell for Lunch. After lunch to SH6 to Luggate, Albert Town and Makarora (afternoon tea) Then on to Haast accommodation, and in time to see the SUNSET at 5.14pm. Sunday morning Leave Haast to Hawea (Lunch) then left to Albert Town on SH6 then SH8 to Cromwell (afternoon tea) Left at Clyde to Omakau on SH85 to Ranfurly Right at Kyeburn SH87 Middlemarch, Mosgiel and home. BEST OF BRITISH This year marks the 35th year of the annual (Dunedin) Best of British outing. Described as a Charity motoring day, these events over those years have been organised by the Otago Jaguars Drivers Club. proceeds from Sunday's outing are intended for the Dunedin Fire Brigade Restoration Society As usual the departure point was the public car park on Victoria Road beside the Dunedin Ice Stadium. The run included some basic navigation instructions with all the entrants finishing at a sports ground in Milton South Otago. Each year the outing has a vehicle theme - this year’s theme was British commercial or utility vehicles. With NZ going into Covid Level 1 the previous weekend the organisers must have breathed a sigh of relief. There were 119 cars/trucks and one motor cycle in attendance with the weather god putting on a full blue sky, with temperatures in the high 20's. John Noble

OUR HOLIDAY OF RALLIES The 40th Wallaby rally started off our holiday of rallies on Saturday 13th February. This time we started with a field test then set off driving through the scenic countryside from the Makikihi Beach Road by the sea to the forest at Atwill Park for lunch and the rest of the field tests. Then back to the club rooms for a rummage through the rust! Oh and prize giving, where we won the Veteran section, I got best lady navigator and we won overall!!

We then went to Geraldine for a couple of days R&R before we joined the 2021 “Plains Sailing” Rally, 28th Model T National continuation tour. We joined the group for dinner on Monday night and got our instruction book. We decided not to tell the Buick that she was on a Model T rally as we didn’t want her to blow a seal! Tuesday 16th February, we woke to a light rain which according to the weather apps/man it would be gone by 10am! So we decide to leave the hood down……..Also in Covid alert level 2…at least we can continue. John Acland gave us a talk at Peel Forest Village and at the Church, with a tour of the cemetery and look at the homestead. Rain finally stopped at lunch time! Our final stop was Roger Mahon’s 80X70 metre shed, which is housing 2/3’s of his collection at present. This is a very impressive display of one man’s lifetime hobby and passion to ensure that these cars, tractors, stationary engines, gigs, etc are all around for future generations to enjoy. Wednesday 17th February, sun shining again! We visited Paul Robin’s private museum, again another great collection, and off to Fairlie for lunch. Then away to Pleasant Point to ride on the hardest working Model T in New Zealand! The Model T Railcar. On leaving here we went back to Geraldine via the Richard Pearse Memorial. The Buick found out she was on a T Rally and threw her badge off….

Thursday was a day off so we decided go for a drive to Mesopotamia. This was such a beautiful scenic drive on gravel roads. Would highly recommend it to everyone who has a spare day…..take a fishing rod and a good book! Saturday was the start of the Mid-Summer Adventure. Starting with a tour of Geraldine Auto Restorations, we travelled to ‘Sundrum’, past an old lime kiln. This amazing property with it’s 1910 homestead is surrounded by beautiful gardens, lawns and forests of both Native and Exotic trees. The neighbour’s brought over their pony and gig for those who wanted a ride. Sunday we where lucky enough to be asked to be passengers in Les and Marie Bennett’s 1918 Oakland. With Nevin attempting to navigate, I enjoyed the views from the back seat. We again visited Roger Mahon’s collection followed by a visit to John Fosters collection, and lunch in their lovely garden. We also visited the Geraldine Motor Museum between rallies. Travelled home on the Sunday after the rally arriving in Mosgiel around 7pm we had a fantastic holiday and thoroughly enjoyed the rallies. There has been a suggestion that the committee look at running a Car Boot Sale at the Clubrooms. Original suggestion was to have it on a Wednesday morning, but this would prevent those who are still working to use this opportunity. GORE SWAP MEET AND A FEW SIDE TRIPS Saturday start time was 9.00am at Mosgiel railway station. All participants were ready and lined up on time; our group consisted of chief organisers Kevin and Val Mason and Bryan and Marion McConachie - both Ford Cortina mounted; Stuart and Jennifer Campion in their 37 Chevrolet; Brian Illingworth - 71 Vauxhall Viscount; Ray and Marion Craig- Z3 BMW; Rob and Andrew French – modern; and Bob and Margaret Woodford and in their Ford Crestline Victoria. With instructions handed out it was proceed in your own time with the first stop at Lawrence for a morning tea break. That was supposed to be the first stop but Fulton Hogan had others ideas with road resealing on the Milton straight. After waiting for 40 north bound cars to pass it was on the move to Lawrence for our scheduled morning tea stop. On the road again to Raes Junction turning left to follow SH90 to Tapanui and on to McNab joining SH1 briefly to turn right and follow our clear instructions to Mandeville. Lunch was at midday at the Miss Cocoa Café. The next move was across the field to the Croydon Aircraft company workshop. Mrs Smith talked us through the restoration of the variety of De Havilland aircraft they work on and the types of materials they use - a most informative visit. Our second visit was a short distance up the Riversdale highway to John and Mary Tremain’s property to view John’s collection of cars. His collection is predominantly Fords ranging from at least one of each Model A body style, most of the Falcon models through the years and what got Bryan and Kevin excited was the display of the Cortinas and Escorts. Only one early Ford V8 for Bob - a 36 Ford V8 FORDOR standard sedan which might be in a forthcoming auction. Also amongst the collection was a number of other makes and models including Minis, Chrysler Valiants. We all had stories and experiences with a number of the cars displayed. Bob says he has sold them all at some stage and has a brochure for each one, but only one Model A. Our visit concluded with a lovely afternoon tea with Mary’s freshly baked scones and homemade apricot jam. Our next visit was about 3km up the highway to Greg and Daphne Elders property to view their cars. Greg is well known in racing circles as the caretaker of a racing TVR Tuscan raced by Canadian Jack Ondrack in classic/historic events. Greg had out their 1917 Cadillac V8 Tourer model 55, a Star touring car. Inside the garage was a Pontiac Ferio Honda Integra type R, another Star. This one has a two seater speedster body, a 39 Ford V8 Deluxe Sedan, a Ford Escort Sport. Greg took us over to another shed where restorations are being carried out - another Pontiac Ferio is being prepared to go back to Canada - most of the machanicals have been completed. It was interesting for us to see what makes up a racing car. One vehicle on the to do list was one that most hadn’t heard of that was a little Glas Royal station. 20
Our run back into Gore was a good chance to get up on our “foils", as they say on the Auckland harbour. It didn’t take long and we were checking in to the Esplanade Motel. Kevin had arranged our evening at the Gore RSA, Bob was tasked with the responsibility to sign us in as his guests. Our evening meal was a buffet the cost of $30 plus entertainment per person, five dollars discount if you were a gold card member - a pocket haka quickly took place in the line, before handing over the cash. The meal was amazing. The theme for the night was St Patricks day so most of the music was Irish. The two Marions, Kevin and Val represented our group on the dance floor, by just after 9:o clock most of us returned to the motel to be on the ball for an early start at the swap meet, got to be there early for the bargains. Sunday was a little cool at the start. Brian Illingworth left early and headed to Milton to attend the best of British - can’t say if he collected any awards. A number of branch members were present at the swap that weren’t on our tour; Colin and Judy Winter, Stuart and Lynne Neil as stall holders. Kevin got us on the road for our trip home heading south to Edendale to turn left and follow the signs to Seaward Downs, Mataura Island and Fortrose. Kevin and Bob were enjoying the road so much that instead of turning left at Seaward Downs they cruised on for another 6kms. Bob figured that much further and they would be in Invercargill! Oh well what’s a little side trip between friends? On returning to the Seaward Downs sign we regrouped and proceeded to follow signs to Tokanui where Kevin as an ex tour coach driver gave us a choice of roads to Curio Bay, one being seal and the other gravel. We chose the gravel one (Haldane Road). Ex tour coach driver assured us it was more scenic and correct he was. From Haldane we continued on towards Curio Bay; part of the road is broken up by the tidal action. The Curio Bay Tumu Toka Curioscape Cafe was our lunch break. The service was good as was the food. We all took the opportunity to view the scenery and check out the penguins nesting spots. From Curio Bay we made our own separate ways back towards Dunedin via the Chaslands Highway, Papatowai, Owaka and Balclutha to Dunedin, some of us arriving home by mid afternoon. Stuart and Jennifer in the 37 Chevrolet motored along at a respectable open road speed all weekend - good effort Stu. The two Cortina crews spent more time in the Bay visiting friends arriving around 6 pm in Dunedin. We all enjoyed the week-end very much, good roads, great weather, excellent accommodation and hospitality and above all great company. Thanks to Bryan, Marion, Kevin and Val - well done.
