Covid-19 Restrictions As most of you will know, on 22 March the Prime Minister announced a new alert system for New Zealand’s COVID-19 response and placed the country on Alert Level 2. This means that COVID-19 remains contained, but the risks are higher than at the minimum status of Alert Level 1. We are all expected to limit our movement around the country to essential travel only, those who are over 70 years of age or who have underlying health issues are asked to stay at home, and businesses are asked to implement working from home arrangements for staff where possible.
All branch and national events have been cancelled for the next 4-6 weeks. Decisions beyond then will be made closer to the time. With the government alert level being currently at Level 2 the following will apply until further notice:
•
Wednesday mornings- essential maintenance work only. No gatherings.
•
Friday nights - speakers cancelled, bar and club rooms will be closed.
•
Club rooms only open for members doing maintenance work—cutting grass etc (one member on site).
•
Last Thursday run (26 March) will be held only if the weather is fine as it will be BYO afternoon tea at an outside venue.
•
At this stage we will still proceed as planned with the Restoration Rally in May and the AGM in June however will review this as this situation evolves and advise members via email etc. I remind everyone to look after yourself and each other. Remember there is no need to panic and following advice from the Ministry of Health will help keep you and other members of our community safe and well. Branch committee will keep members advised by email with any further cancellations we make. Email is the quickest way that we will be able to update you so please provide your email addresses to Marion if you have not already done so. Members need to be guided by information coming through from the Ministry of Health and announcements from Government leaders. Look after yourselves and Wash Your Hands!

February/March was a busy time for the branch with members attending rallies both locally and at neighbouring branches. From reading reports all enjoyed themselves with some being mentioned in the results. The beginning of March was the biannual Wings and Wheels organised by the Otago Aero Club. The weather gods were kind, the sun was shining and everyone enjoyed their day. The following weekend was the Best of British Car Rally which ended up at Portobello. Both events were a great opportunity for the branch to fly the flag and let others know who we are. The branch were in charge of looking after the gates at Portobello and my thanks to Andrew and Donna Roxburgh, Colin and Judy Winter, Ross McTaggart, Bruce Murray, Kevin Mason and Paddy Williams for looking after the gates. My thanks also to Mark Wilkinson who organised the route. This year the route went through Chatsford and I have heard that the residents were outside lining the route through the village. Both events were a great opportunity for the branch to fly the flag and let others know who we are. Also during March was the South Island Club Captains tour. Alon and Tracey always try to find new roads that have been less travelled and I am sure that this year was no different with everyone enjoying the route and camaraderie of the event. The National Executive meeting in Wellington on the 28th March has been cancelled due to Covid-19. The meeting was to include discussions on a proposed notice of motion and remit. The notice of motion is to give prospective members the option to join the club via the website whereas the remit is updating the club bylaws to allow for online payment of subscriptions. This will now take place at a future time. Coming up in May is the Restoration Rally. The rally is open to all members to attend and is preceded by the judging of the vehicles being put forward for the restoration award. Wee Wheelie Wander Oamaru Mopeds Report 2020 On Saturday 15th February I rode in the Inaugural, and my inaugural Rally of the North Otago Branch of the VCC Mopeds, Wee Wheelie Wander. It was a great day, we travelled to Herbert with the bikes on the trailer, had morning tea and a briefing at the meeting house, given our instructions then headed away. Travelling on seal then onto the gravel, around past All day Bay and ending up at the Kakanui Fishing Club for lunch. We had a field test task to complete as well. After lunch we were given Run Sheets for the afternoon, which included a ‘Shed’ visit which housed some very special cars and bikes. After viewing these had a delicious afternoon tea and headed back to Herbert, where the bikes were loaded back onto the trailers. I really enjoyed the day as I had not been on a 2 wheeler bike for many, many years, I was a bit wobbly at first but got better each km I travelled. We covered at least 30km in total. Extra special thanks to Wendy & Gordon Pringle for the organisation of such a great day. There were 4 of us that had never been on a Moped Rally before, and this being our first one were each given a medal. - Reported by Ruth Edmunds 8

OTAGO VINTAGE CAR CLUB RESTORATION TROPHY / ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS The main function of the event is to encourage all financial Otago Branch members to present their restored, VCC club eligible vehicles, and for all club members to witness and celebrate the occasion, and generally have a fun day. All entrants will be required to present their vehicle at the venue and provide a restoration resume with the vehicle. At the completion of the formal procedure, all entrants may join with other members in a non-competitive restoration run. *This is the only qualifying requirement for the issue of the Restoration Achievement Award, which will be presented later in the day. Please Contact Branch Secretary for the appropriate paperwork that needs to be completed before the event if you are bringing a vehicle for consideration of the Restoration Trophy. As soon as possible. The Restoration awards will be competed for in two sections :
Restoration Achievement Award
• This award will be issued to all entrants who have entered a club eligible vehicle for the event, irrespective of whether the vehicle has been restored, or an original vehicle ‘tidied up’. • To qualify for acceptance, vehicles must have been returned to use, warranted, registered and/or licensed, if applicable before the 31st April 2019. • There is no judging associated with this award. • The award will be presented to all entrants to acknowledge the commitment and attainment of the member in making a club eligible vehicle roadworthy. • Applications for Restored Vehicles which are not registered to be road worthy – will be considered on application.
Restoration Trophy Award
• It will be totally at the discretion of the owner to enter a restored vehicle for judging and to compete for the Restoration Trophy. • To qualify for acceptance for the Restoration Trophy, the vehicle would have undergone a significant restoration, in addition to the requirements in the previous section. • The judging will be carried out by appointed branch members, at a time suitable to all parties and would be based on the finish, presentation and accuracy of the vehicle. • The judges will report to the Chief Judge who will adjudicate on any matters arising. • The trophy award will be issued to the vehicle judged with the greatest aggregate of points above a ‘bench mark’. • Any vehicle failing to meet these criteria will not be considered for the trophy. • The recipient of the Restoration Trophy will be announced at the Branch AGM. No correspondence will be entered into. • All Restoration Trophy entrants will receive a Restoration Achievement Award. 10
Entry Conditions The main objective is to have a simple, fair, equitable event with minimal rules, however it has been found necessary to incorporate the following: • The term vehicle is intended to cover all VCC of NZ eligible vehicles. • The Restoration Awards cover the period to 31st April 2020. • All entrants will be required to ‘fill in’ and return an entry form, with the historic details of the vehicle, together with before and after restoration photos. • These documents will be retained by the Branch to form an informal historic register of our member’s vehicles. • The owner of the vehicle must be a financial member of the Branch. • All entrants will be required to present their vehicle to the event, and may participate in the restoration run. • All vehicles presented must have a current WOF and registration - non compliance will be considered on application. • Once a vehicle has been submitted for either of these awards, it may not be re-submitted for a minimum period of 10 years, unless there are some substantiated reasons ( ie vehicle rebuilt following a major accident or damage) Guidelines • The vehicle can be rebuilt mechanically leaving desirable original body, frame or paintwork. • The vehicle could be completely rebuilt where necessary in every way including having parts, panels, and running gear renewed. • A vehicle could be restored using parts from vehicles of a similar model and age. • A vehicle would not be discounted if the owner had used the services of others to work on parts of the vehicle, because it is not our aim to have the membership completely competent in all skills required for restoration. • A vehicle can be completely rebuilt where necessary in every way, using all the original parts where practical. • A vehicle can also be constructed from parts recovered from other donor vehicles of a similar model and age, bearing in mind the final accuracy. Replica Vehicles According to a Club decision a vehicle built entirely or mainly from new parts would be considered a replica and would for Club purposes be dated from the date of manufacture. E.g. New parts of a 1960’s vehicle used in 1999 would constitute a replica dating from 1999. Accordingly this vehicle would not be club eligible until 2029. NB: It is also the wish of the Branch Committee that all those vehicles presented for the Restoration Award will also be made available for the Otago Branch display at this years Autospectacular on a date yet to be advised Further information will be supplied. 11
RESTORATION RALLY – Details are enclosed for members who have just finished restoring or got a VCC eligible vehicle back on the road over the past 12 months. We encourage you to bring it out for this rally – it doesn’t need to be put forward for the Trophy Award, but it is a great opportunity for our members to see what members have been restoring, and to see these vehicles being used. Also, we encourage all our members to come out for a drive – no questions no challenges and a good chance to socialize with our members. NB Contact your secretary if you intend to enter the Trophy Award. We need to know your intentions as soon as possible, so that our judges have the details on hand before the day. BRANCH AGM Our AGM is coming up in June. The Agenda and call for nominations for Secretary, and other committee members will be advertised in May’s Roadrunner. Please put some serious thought into putting you name forward for a committee member position. This gives you the opportunity to learn what is involved in running our branch and how the whole Club works. We are all aware that these are voluntary positions, but as they say many hands make light work. Aprils club night Speaker – CANCELLED 2020 VCC National Day / Daffodil Day which was to be held on 23 August 2020 has been cancelled by National Office. Upcoming Events at other branches - Entry Forms If you would like a copy of entry forms for events that are happening elsewhere. There should be a copy in the clubrooms or contact me for a copy. I have a pile of different ones at the moment as we head into a busy few months of motoring. Entries usually close within two weeks of the event. Library Roster: We have had a few members pull out of the library Roster. If you can spare a few hours on a Friday evening every 5-6 weeks please let us know. Thanks. Note: The Library is now closed until further notice due to Covid-19 restrictions. VIC Applications – please note - VIC Application forms have been updated - again. When completing these forms please ensure that you have the most up to date form titled Sept 2019 – Check the VCC website. –These continue to be updated as procedures change etc. 12
NNB: Please if you are planning to enter a local event, and running late with entry forms, please contact the organizer by phone or email to let them know you are coming. They need to know numbers for printing the instructions, and catering purposes for some events. Spare Parts Shed – Parts shed is usually open every Wednesday morning, and Friday evenings when the clubrooms are open. Reminder – see if you can effectively recycle your parts before scrapping them. NO TYREs by request. The nearest AED defibrillator to the clubrooms is on the outside wall of the 4 Square shop on corner of Bayview Road. If you become unfinancial you will no longer receive discounted insurance premiums.

Best of British The last time we were eligible to attend the Dunedin Best of British outing was in 1998. After a hiatus of over 20 years we returned to the fold. Having recently purchased a low mileage MG F. The old netball courts on Victoria Road were where the entrants arrived and also departed from. This year’s event honoured the Standard and Triumph marques. After a lengthy drive most of the participants arrived at the Portobello Reserve on Allen's Beach Road. The Otago Jaguar's Club who were the organisers of the days outing had done a marvelous job in having vehicles at the final destination parked in their tribal groups. All proceeds from the days outing we being donated to the Dunedin Coastguard. Unfortunately the day was really overcast - though not too cold. We enjoyed the days outing catching up with long lost friends. John Noble
