Chairman’s chat It’s that time again; time to write down the Chairman’s thoughts on matters vintage and vehicular. Which is all just a disguise. Graeme Pate, Waikato Branch sometime chair, often used to say that the cars were just an excuse for the people to get together. I like the gospel according to Graeme, and so should all of us. As a largely senior group of old codgers, we need to take a step back and have a good look at the club members around us; warts, wrinkles, saggy bits and all. (Dolly Parton once said “If I see something sagging, bagging or dragging I'll get it nipped, tucked or sucked! You can just hear her saying that, can’t you?!) Some of us have known each other for over sixty years and still counting. I’d take my hat off to you all, if I wore one, declaring what a bloody miracle that you’ve put up with each other for so long and still call some of us friends. Which brings me to a sobering point. Sobering? I didn’t know I’d been drinking! All of us have some dignity as human beings and all of us deserve some kindness. As we get to Christmas, let’s “pay it forward” with acts of random kindness and forgiveness to those around us. Yes even the pains in the asses, that special person we’d love to serve up a knuckle sandwich. Be the smiling assassin in your neighbourhood this Christmas! There are some great events coming up, check this edition for details and get behind the fundraising. A wee birdie told me the Christmas hamper will contain an Annie Baxter Fruit Cake (notice the capital letters) not seen in captivity since the Grand Closing of her Famous Victorian Tea Rooms! Make a donation to the hamper, nonperishables and non-alcoholics. Hic! Once the noise gets out into the community, there’ll be no stopping the money rolling in. Offer to help Lee Brehaut to man (woman?) the raffle stall at the New World. Okay, so fall off your Gurney and drag your sorry tuschy along to a rally…the Windsor is coming up. Park the Zimmer frame, check your colostomy bag and crank up the old banger, time for some good old fashioned vintage motoring. It’s late, I’m being ridiculous and it’s time for bed. So grab the cat and shut the door on your way out.

Eulogy Royston Shirreffs has passed away. A true gentleman, enthusiastic club member and a quiet, behind-the-scenes worker. He had a couple of rough years recently with the passing of his wife Jackie and his own struggles with cancer and the heartbreak of being alone. May we remember his gentle ways and assuring friendship. Royston was a foundation member of the club, initially Vice President, then Treasurer from 1989 to 1994 and committee member for many years, treating all his club work with meticulous care and a calm temperament. More recently he helped in the Spare Parts Department and has looked after the Vehicle Identification Certificates since 2003. Vehicles that Royston has owned and driven include a 1923 Chevrolet, 1939 Chevrolet and a 1937 Vauxhall. He was a regular at meetings, rallies and events and was very involved with the Windsor Rally over an extended period. His sixty year membership anniversary was to come up in only the next several months. You can find more stories and pictures featuring Royston in the book; “50 Vintage Years; North Otago Branch History”. I didn’t know him well myself but always appreciated his unruffled approach, honesty and reliability. He will be missed, especially by those who have known him the longest and to many he wasn’t just another club member but a true friend. The legacy of his long service to the club cannot be overestimated. Farewell on your final journey Royston; may you rest in peace. PF
Club Captains Report The Teapot rally was run last Sunday with a small contingent of vehicles leaving the Waimate Club rooms around 11am travelling through the Waimate Gorge then on down to Glenavy to meet up with the Oamaru group. From there we all travelled on the timed route put together by Clive, last year’s winner, and on to our club rooms for afternoon tea. It was such a nice afternoon we shifted outside for this and the much anticipated rally winners announcement. Annie and Pete Hind from Waimate branch having successfully driven the timed section to the satisfaction of the sole adjudicator took away the much coveted Teapot trophy. For their endeavours comes the privilege of organising next year’s Teapot rally. We wish them well and look forward to the challenge Waimate branch will set us. There will be a rally schedule presented at the November Club Meeting along with some suggested events that are proposed to fill in the schedule for the remaining year. I encourage everyone to scrutinize this information and send back your preferred calendar of events. The branch events are for all members to participate in and with this in mind we desperately need your input if we are to come up with a calendar that best suits the majority of members while attempting to accommodate some of the minority events. On that note we are also looking for suggestions to get more of you out to events. If anyone needs a hand to get a vehicle running etc, please contact me or another member as there is plenty of expertise and others ready to lend a hand.
