Chairperson Report Hard to believe that we are now half way through this year, I always look forward to June as for me it means time for Irishman Rally. I haven’t needed any driving lessons from Dad this year, so I must be getting better at driving the wee truck. Just need to go a for a few short drives to get better at the basics like hill starts before we depart on Friday 3rd June. It is great to see that even though we are now officially in Winter there are still things happening within the branch for you all to get involved with. There will be a Mid – Month Café Run on the 15th June, a Mid – Month Motorcycle Run on the 29th June and also each Monday the Parts Shed is open at 10am for a cuppa and a chat. If it is too cold to take your VCC eligible vehicle on the Mid-Week Café run, modern Vehicles are most welcome. Next month we will be holding our Mid-Winter lunch on Sunday 17th July, please mark this date in your calendar. Further details will be in next month’s Distributor. For our Branch June is when we hold our AGM for the year, this year it will be held on Sunday 12th June. There is still time to get in your nominations for the committee, these need to be received by Wednesday 8th June. Hard copies of the nomination form are available on the notice board in the club rooms. If you don’t want to be on the committee but would still like to be involved then there are also the positions outside of the committee which are confirmed by the new committee at the first committee meeting after AGM. The positions outside the committee are Custodian, Archivist, Librarian, Parts, Newsletter Editor, Scribe for Beaded Wheels and ID Card Authenticator. May Club Night – Quiz Night Chocolate fish were once again swimming through members as they competed to get as many answers right as possible. Lead by Murray and Derek, there was lots of friendly banter and learning of new information. Both men had done their research and presented us with some interesting questions and several came from other members. Due to a little bit of (cheating and) discussion during question time it became hard to identify who really won but there was plenty of fun to be had and we were all rewarded with a chocky fish anyway. Thanks Guys!

Newsletter Number 2 Routes for the event are being worked out now. There will be three courses. The first and most involved is aimed at the P60 group and involves some hill climbs but giving some spectacular views of the Taieri Plains. The second is aimed at the Vintage to pre 60 group. This one is under debate at the moment. We would like to get those same magnificent views but we have to consider the hill work and braking abilities. The third course is aimed at the Veteran group and those with two wheel braking and other age related difficulties. We are getting you out of the city as easily as possible and onto the flat country and giving you some enjoyable easy motoring and the public a good show of your lovely cars. There will be time trials on all the routes. However, if anyone feels they do not want to take the route for their vehicle, they are free to take one of the other courses. You will have noticed we have Cooke Howlison mentioned in the heading. They are virtually almost the ‘last man standing’ of all the original sponsors of the Taieri Tour from the beginning. Over the years, they have supported us with the trophy for the timed section of the Veteran group. Most of the other sponsors have slid into the mists of history. Cooke Howlison has come on board for the ride as well for this the 50th helping with some of the expenses. Keep the dates free and let us have a great turn out for a great event. Travis.
2021/22 Club Captains Report While we are all a little weary of covid and its ups and downs, at present we are back into an almost “Normal” phase. We got away to a good start with SC All British rally in June the same weekend as the Irishman’s, followed by Waimate hosting the Garage raid in July and us getting the Teapot Rally under way from Morven Domain in October, before Covid kicked our Swap Meet into touch. By December we had enough leeway to run a very successful Windsor rally and got away with the Wee Wheelie Wander before we ran out of luck and the All British fell victim to covid restrictions later in February. In August, thanks to the generosity of club member Casey Borsboom, the local ‘Musical Theatre Oamaru’ had the use of a real live 1930s Singer convertible for a prop in their production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Junior. It took a little bit of fore thought to get the car on to and off the stage in the Boys’ High School auditorium but it was a great hit with cast and production staff as well as the audiences and helped show off the local VCC branch. Well done Casey. Our end of year run and BBQ was enjoyed by all those who attended. Thanks to Joy and Gordon Hay for organising the day which started with a short run out to Kakanui for an icecream then a slow ride back to the club rooms where they had the BBQ up and running to finish off the day. The VCC International Vero Rally finally got underway in Taranaki after a year delay due to covid restrictions. In the end there were just on five hundred vehicles attending but there were only two vehicles attending from our branch. It is a long way to travel and these events are not cheap to attend. It was a great event though, well managed and the runs took us around a lot of country you would not normally travel when visiting the area. We finished the rally on the Friday night and that Sunday new Covid restrictions were instigated that would have closed it down. So well planned or very good luck depending on your view of things. Either way the organising committee deserved a break after planning this event for two plus years. Mid-month runs this last year were again well organised by Verna Chambers until she released the position earlier this year. Thanks again Verna for all your efforts. I only organised one run before John Gale took over for the Winter Café runs. If someone else would like to run the spring/summer runs please contact any committee member. February we got the third Wee Wheelie Wander away. Ably organised and run by Wendy and Gordon Pringle, this year’s event started at the old school, Enfield then ventured around the area, stopping off at the model aircraft club to watch some of their club members fly their machines. This was following a short stint on shingle (Read, thick mud courtesy of the preceding weather), which challenged most of us but no one fell off. From the Model aircraft club the group made their way back to
base for lunch then the afternoon run took us up through Windsor and Five Forks before returning to our starting point. Another great run. The Gerald Lynch-blosse Memorial motor cycle rally was run in April with a very good turnout including a couple from Invercargill and Christchurch. Again starting and finishing at our club rooms, this year’s run went out to Duntroon for lunch then back on different routes. A brilliant day only marred by a small off road excursion by one entrant and a near off road for another. No one was hurt other than a little pride. Prize giving was done following afternoon tea. Well done Robert and team. Later in April we also completed the inaugural Autumn Gold run, an event the committee wishes to add to the annual calendar of events. This run was well attended by local members and the colours of the trees around the Benmore/Otematata area made a spectacular show. Of our club nights this last year we only had the one guest speaker. The team of Elisabeth and Fred Smits from Wellington completed a very entertaining evening with a slide show and commentary on their adventures travelling around the world in their Mercedes. Thanks again to all those who have supported the various events the club has participated in including other club events such as the New Year run to Fairlie, Wallaby Run and the SC All British. Supporting our other branches helps everyone enjoy the club. The committee is always looking for events/rallies/runs that members would like to participate in, so if you have an idea for an event please contact any of the committee members. Club Captain Report May 2022 Our club night was held on the 4th May finishing in a Quiz night. I use the term Quiz lightly as quite a few questions were discussed by those in the know and this usually resulted in the answer being slipped into the conversation. Our very own quiz masters were guilty as charged. This said it was surprising that most did not get a bigger score. It’s all low key with a few good laughs with everyone enjoying the evening. I did get a bit carried away purchasing the chocolate fish so we have some leftovers for another event. The first winter mid-month coffee run was held on Wednesday the 11th of May. A good selection of cars turned out for a short run out to Maheno tavern via Weston then the coast road through Kakanui before turning out toward the tavern. A nice day to all sit out on the decking for a coffee/cup of tea and a chat. Thanks to John and Jo Gale for organising the run. On that note John has also stepped up to organise a monthly motorcycle run to be held on the last Wednesday of the month meeting at the clubrooms for a 1.30pm start. South Canterbury VCC All British day is being run on Sunday 5th of June. If you are thinking of attending we could meet at the racecourse by 8am for the run up to Timaru to be parked up a little after 9am. The run starts at 10.30am with a display of Cars from 9am. The committee has agreed that we will run a “family treasure hunt” rally as our part in supporting Daffodil and the VCC day. This involves each vehicle following the rally notes as usual then picking up “treasure” as noted by cryptic clues on their rally sheets. The winners get the most treasure correct. Please give us some feedback if you would like to help set this up. Remember that all proceeds we raise go to our local Cancer Society. We would like to focus this event on families so any ideas on getting a good local turn out are sort. Last month I told you that at our AGM I will have completed three years as your club captain and will not be seeking re-election. Despite hinting we need someone to take over this role, to date no one has come forward. If you are thinking of supporting the club in an elected capacity then please look at the club captain position. I can assure you it is a very rewarding role with plenty of support to get you up and running. Derek.

50 Vintage Years North Otago Branch History Excerpt Pages 18/19 At a Committee Meeting held at Mr. J. O’Brien’s residence at Deborah on Wednesday 16th August 1961 it was decided to make enquiries about organizing a raffle to help swell the clubs’ funds. Raffle tickets were sold at the A & P Show. Raffle tickets were sold again in 1962. From the December 1962 notice of Christmas Noggin and Natter “After a successful rally, cake stall and raffle we are pleased to report that the club now has over 100 pounds in the bank towards the expenses of the Easter Rally”. The cake stall was held on December 7th 1961 and was advertised in Newsletter No 1. In Newsletter No 4 (no date, but written after the second Annual General Meeting held on 3rd July 1963) it is quoted “Thanks to a healthy bank account, a new typewriter is certainly a help to the secretary’s work and should be a great asset to the club.. A dart board has also been purchased and will be very useful for evening functions”. 10 shilling raffles were run at meetings in 1965 and were to pay for Windsor Rally plaques. Members paid half a crown for each branch run and this was reduced to twenty cents when decimal currency came in July 1967. On 23rd July 1966 it was decided to put 150 pounds into an investment account at 4.1/2% and the balance sheet of 1968 showed a fixed deposit of $300-00 and interest of $19-57. In August 1970 an auction of articles donated by club members was held and Mr. J. Sullivan, the National President of VCC of NZ at that time was the auctioneer. In 1971 the branch participated in a fundraising Talent Quest run by the Licensing Trust. The June newsletter of 1971 asked for “All members over twenty to sell raffle tickets in the Tavern while us guys perform in the Talent Quest” – John O’Brien newsletter editor. NOVCC drew 12th August with four entrants who were; Bill Mitchell – recital, John O’Brien – instrumental, Ivan Newlands – vocal and Kathleen Perry – vocal. A chocolate wheel was manned and raffle tickets were sold. Branch members had donated meat as prizes for our raffles. J. O’Brien and K. M. Perry went through to the quarter finals. It was reported in the November newsletter of 1971 that the Club had made a clear profit of $220-00. The money was “hard earned” and it was a relief to everyone’s pockets that John and Kathleen did not go on to the semi-finals. In a statement of receipt and payments for the year ended 31st May 1972 a social and raffle had raised $431-85 and a display at the showgrounds raised $138-20. By the 31st May 1976 there was $725-11 Cash on Deposit and by the same date in 1978 the amount was $1026-11. Tree pruning became a fundraiser for the branch during this time. At 31st May 1979 the balance sheet showed $1526-11 in Term Deposit and interest of $164-33. The excess of income over expenditure was $87073 and this money came from Windsor Rally, the Commercial Rally, a swap meet and raffles. Swap meets were held in 1978, 1979, 1980 and 1981 where gate takings, sale of spare parts, and the running of a canteen each year all contributed to branch funds. At the 24th Annual General Meeting held on 5th June 1985 a motion was passed “That a cheque account be opened for the operation of the spare parts”. Twelve months later parts to the value of $351-50 had been sold and in the income and expenditure account to 30th April 1987 sale of parts was $1650-05. The same income and expenditure account showed; hay carting $528-00, sale of Leyland Truck $500-00 and profits made on Windsor, Commercial and Motorcycle Rallies and a bus trip to Winchester Swap meet. By this time the term deposit had risen to $1423-87. In 1985 funds were needed for the 25th Anniversary Rally and an old garden centre at Dalgety Crown was demolished for a donation of $150-00. 1986 saw members bagging and selling sawdust, sheep manure and hen manure.
The bagging and sale of hen manure, hay carting, pruning trees, firewood, delivering of new vehicles, stocktaking at Farmers Trading Company, swapmeets, as well as cake stalls, raffles and the sale of spare parts all contributed to the fundraising of the branch for many years. The balance sheet as at 30th April 1990 showed profit from the fundraising was $7441-53. Investments increased from $1079-05 to $7286-22. Hay carting and manure sales provided $1916-00 of the fundraising income. Donations and grants totaled $410800. This figure includes $2500-00 for the 1990 Commemorative Rally. The November Distributor of 1992 stated “Did You Know?????? 4th June 1975 club members pruned trees for club funds. 19th June 1975 sixty hours of tree pruning to date. 7th October 1992 Tom Stephens offers trees for firewood. Guess what? Same trees. How many of the same members will be back to them this time? Talking of trees we acknowledge the chairman’s generosity in offering trees for firewood. Most of this has been sold and we await payment of same”, John Adamson, Newsletter Editor. After the purchase of the Stoke Street Clubrooms in 2000 the term deposit was reduced from $23,652-00 to $9334-00. This was printed in the statement of financial position as at 30th April 2001
Catering began in 2000 with three ladies serving food at a wedding reception. On 16th March 2003 catering for a family reunion was organized by Beryl Aker and raised $1000-00. In 2003 again under the guidance of Beryl and Tony Aker branch members assisted with catering for the Wood Turners Guild workshop at the racecourse. This opportunity has continued each year until 2009. In December of 2004 a sausage sizzle and sale of coffee at the auction of I. Craig’s garage raised $600-00. Branch members catered for the first meal of the 2005 South Island Club Captain’s Tour. This meal was provided at the Scottish Hall and was again overseen by Beryl Aker The North Otago Branch was asked to provide a display of members’ vehicles and assist with the display of cars entered in the 5th AA NZ National Classic Car Rally on Sunday 16th March 2003 and this raised $343900. The same year a profit of $1861-00 was made from the sale of parts. At the time of selling the property at Deborah and relocating the parts shed to Stoke street scrap metal was sold to Everitt Enterprises and this assisted with funds for the new parts shed. North Otago Branch of the Vintage Car Club of NZ (Inc) 21 50 Vintage Years In 2003 the branch accepted a proposed Oscar programme to be held in the clubrooms. Rent was paid for the after school programme held four afternoons per week from January 2004 to June 2006. The club rooms are hired out to groups and individuals and has been used as a polling booth at elections. 2003 was the year NOVCC began marshalling at the Dunedin Autospectacular and it raised $830-00 that year. This opportunity increased in 2005 when the branch was invited to participate in helping run the programme and the Spannerman competition was implemented. Following the success of that event the branch was invited to be part of the organization of the Autospectacular each year and this one day event continues to be a good fund raiser. Each year the branch has a display site and sells spare parts also. The branch parts department continues to be the most consistent fund raiser with a $2744-60 profit for the year ended at 31st March 2007. It would be interesting to know just how much money has been raised for the branch by the many members who are, and have been, involved at the parts shed. Annual General Meeting – Reminder of Date and Change of Format The committee has changed the format of the Annual General Meeting to holding it on a Sunday and during the afternoon.
So the date is th Sunday 12 June at 1.30pm at the Clubrooms with afternoon tea provided. Reports and the draft Minutes will be circulated prior to the meeting by email or hard copy on request. There will be an opportunity to ask questions of the Minutes and each report before they are put to the meeting and accepted. Conversations should be happening now among all members about how the club is running and the make up of a committee to keep things running the way members want it to. If you haven’t seen the upgraded clubrooms, come on up on a Monday morning and catchup with guys. They are great fellows who enjoy a bit of social time over a cuppa. Put this date on your calendar now. The committee is hoping for a good turnout to support this change in format.
Parts Dept Report 2022 I would like to thank everyone for their support of the Parts Department Team. Donations of car parts and vehicles have been great and more would be welcome. Sales are steady with some months better than others. Monday mornings are great and start with a cuppa, some people just come for the cuppa and a chat, while others do work around the buildings and grounds which is appreciated. It is great to see everyone who comes on Monday morning at 10am and there is always a warm welcome for everyone who comes. The number who come varies but about 10 or 12 regularly. Come on up and see if there is parts suitable for your vehicle and buy it for yourself. Once it is sold to someone else it is gone for good and when you want that part you have to look elsewhere. I would like to thank Derek Brehaut and Ralph Weir, for their support and work that they do in the parts department, I would also like to thank Jimmy Boaden for his work and donations before he moved to Waimate. I would also like to thank Lee Brehaut for the lovely scones that she has brought for morning tea, and everyone else who have contributed to our morning tea. So many thanks to everyone who comes along to the Monday morning, it has been a huge learning curve for me as I am still finding my way around the parts shed. Ernest George
