Chairperson’s report I hope you have all had a chance to enjoy motoring in this fine autumn weather we have been having. The motorcycle rally on the 17th April and the Sunday Run on the 18th April certainly was a great chance for members to enjoy our beautiful countryside on a warm autumns day. I certainly enjoyed a drive in my mg on the 18th April, who knew that a no exit road would provide the most spectacular view over North Otago. Further report from executive meeting: A new remit was discussed at the executive meeting last month in Wellington regarding the formation of special interest groups as branches of The Vintage Car Club of New Zealand. This remit has been given formal status now and will be voted on at the AGM in Christchurch in August. The logic behind this remit is if another car club that already exists but wants to be able to join the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand would be able to do so as a branch of the club. This would benefit the VCC by gaining some more members. If you would like to know more about this remit please come and have a chat with me. I have not received the updated proposed new logo for the VCC yet as soon as this information arrive I will share it with you all. The upgrade of our club rooms are coming along very nicely, half the walls have now been painted and new carpet has been laid. You will all be able to see the progress for yourself at May Club night. Club Rooms Upgrade Since the last update the library has been gibed and gib stopped. Thanks to Clive for helping remove the old wall and build the new one, Charlie for helping fix the gib and John Gayle who did all the gib stopping and sanding. The door and window architraves have been installed ready to stop and sand. Now the hard part starts with a colour scheme agreed and painting to get started. To get this under way we need to shift some of the existing books/chairs etc. into storage and clear the old carpeted area so we can move the scaffold around. If you would like to help with any of this and are not sure if you have already volunteered please contact Derek on 021 390 518.
Adventures of an Old Restorer Over the past month, I have been using paint remover to get rid of all the old paint on the Bedford. I do not scrape it off when wet as I tend to score the metal work so I let it dry and grind it off with the circular wire brush on the angle grinder. I grew up in a time when you did not throw anything away, you cleaned it off to use next time. Well I think I should have replaced the filters in my spray mask long ago, a week ago I collapsed and was taken to hospital in an ambulance, a CT scan revealed that I had a chronic Sinus infection caused by the toxins in both the 85 year old paint and the chemical paint remover. I will certainly take this as a wake-up call in the future, I have printed this so that you other VCC hobby restorers do not make the same mistake I did, just make doubly sure that you have the right equipment for the job in hand I have been told that if I hadn’t been such a tight-wad it would never have happened in the first place, in future I will take my mates advice and release the cobwebs from my wallet more often. There was a very good turn out of members, about 40 in all, Marty [the owner] showed us through the different stages of car restoration, his new custom built spray booth was very impressive, the air is sucked in from outside and goes out through the filters in the floor, the inside temperature is kept at 25dgs. We were all impressed by the standard of workmanship that we saw, in each stage of restoration, The club would like to thank Marty for a very informative evening. Thank you.
Club Captain’s Report Having the last month away in our caravan touring the lower South lsland, we had plenty of time to wind down walking on those beautiful clear sandy beaches in the Catlins. While there were a few people around with lots of caravans and campervans on the road the lack of oversees tourists meant a more relaxed trip, particularly when doing the Milford and Doubtful sound trips. We had great weather over all and even scared the --- out of our selves taking a Helicopter up the Fox glacier onto the tops of Mt Tasman then around the back of Mt Aoraki. By the time we got back to the entrance to Fox glacier the cloud had blocked the entrance as well as the Elisabeth glacier next to it. Plan C was to descend down the Franz Josef glacier below the cloud base then across a couple of ridges before landing at Fox. We reached a height of around 3500m with magnificent views of the Southern Alps, Glad we did it. While we were away the Club visit to Winders Rod and Restorations France St was completed. From all accounts it was well supported with in excess of thirty people turning out for a very informative visit. This success has prompted the committee to investigate a visit to another establishment over the winter months. The annual Gerald Lynch-Blosse motorcycle rally was held on Saturday the 17 th with a good turnout of riders starting from the Club rooms after morning tea. Lunch at Maheno Tavern then returning to the club rooms for afternoon tea and prize giving. From the feedback I received it was another successful rally, well done Robert and crew. Sunday the 18th saw another group congregate at the club rooms just after 1pm ready for the run put together by Ernest. The group took off at 1.30pm on time heading around to the Mill wheel in old mill Rd before heading out to Five Forks and on to Mt Dashers until we run out of sealed Rd. Brilliant views and a chance to let the old girl cool down after the run up hill. We all got down from the hill and found our way to afternoon tea (a pint) at the Enfield Fort. The following Wednesday afternoon fourteen people assembled at the club rooms ready for our midmonth run. The month it was out to Waimate then out to Kelcey’s Bush for afternoon tea. Lovely setting with the stream just below us and native birds singing in the bush. Thanks again to Verna for organizing these runs. I am still open to any ideas for the VCC Daffodil day scheduled for this August, so if anyone has an off the wall idea I would love to talk about it. Derek

The April club night was held at Winders Rod and Restoration workshop. There was a good turnout of members, Marty and one of his men were very generous with their time and shared a lot of information. The projects he is involved with are pretty impressive. His workmanship is of a high standard I guess that is why his workshop is choc-a- bloc. Thanks Marty for an interesting evening. Gordon.
Workshop Pro Chain Lubricant Fully Synthetic is a specially formulated fully synthetic chain lubricant aerosol designed for ultimate protection of chains and sprockets in a variety of demanding applications. These include motorcycle chains, lift and drive chains, leaf and roller chains and coveyor system chains. This product is initially a thin flowing lubricant which when sprayed, searches and penetrates into the chain links and rollers. Within a few minutes the solvent carrier ‘flashes off ‘ and the product thickens and provides a strong, cushioning and lubricating, grease like coating on all parts. This coating has powerful anti-fling properties and is not displaced by the fast movement of the chain. Chain and sprocket wear is reduced to a minimum by the lubricant coating.

The Annual General Meeting of the North Otago Branch of VCC of NZ (inc.) is to be held at the Branch Clubrooms at 7.30pm on Wednesday 9th June 2021. Nominations for Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, Branch Secretary, Branch Treasurer, Club Captain and a Committee of Five Members are now open. As per the Constitution “Nominations are to be forwarded in writing to the Branch Secretary, to arrive not less than two clear days before the day appointed for the Annual General Meeting. Secretary’s Report Recently the systems provider on the Branch Laptop has been changed and we hope that will solve the problem of some members not receiving emails that were sent out in a Group format. Please contact me if you do not receive your monthly emailed Distributor as it is sent to all members via a ‘Local Members’ group at the beginning of each month. We welcome Geoff Douch as a new member. Geoff was our M. C. at our 60th Anniversary Dinner and he owns a 1967 Vauxhall Viva. National Vintage Rally Easter 2021 The Rally started with a barbecue lunch indoors due to wet weather on Friday, we also picked up our rally packs. The official welcome was in the evening by Alistair Day and the Rally Committee. Supper was served and an informal get together was also held. It was a cool but clear start for Saturday morning motoring with approximately 90% of entrants taking the scenic route, that used back roads and lots of gravel to Fairlie. We had a late lunch at Fairlie with a car display before heading back to Timaru via SH 8. Saturday evening there was great food and entertainment at the Racecourse Function Centre. Sunday morning had a later start for the days run. There was a drive around Timaru with views of the harbour and through the gardens before heading to Pleasant Point. The route took us past the Richard Pearse Memorial with very hot temperatures and strong 100K plus winds. We also viewed the new Route 79 museum which was well worth a look. Lunch was at Geraldine where it reached 34deg and the wind blew acorns and leaves about. Acorns hurt when they hit you on your head. After lunch we visited the unfinished Mann museum north of Geraldine, this will be a wonderful museum to visit once it is completed with a wide array of earthmoving equipment and vehicles. We then returned to Timaru through the industrial area of Washdyke. Dinner was again at the Racecorse Function Centre with a beautiful meal and a small band. Many people enjoyed dancing to the music before catching the bus back to their accommodation. We had a wonderful time and enjoyed the relaxing format of this rally.
Club Rooms Upgrade Since the last update the Carpeted area has been cleared out with John Adamson providing a container to store the tables and chairs so our crew can start painting. John also provided the truck and manpower (himself) to help shift most of this out to the container. With the Paint scheme agreed and the paint ordered Lee and I then went on holiday for a month with Lindsay Mcleod in charge of his crew of painters left to complete that half of the club rooms. On our return the painting was all but complete with just a few we touch ups Lindsay wanted to do before finishing that stage. In the meantime the Carpet supplier had contacted us to say they wanted to install the new carpet on Monday the 19th and with us just getting home late on the 15th and the Gerald Lynch-Blosse rally on that Saturday with Ernest’s run Sunday there was little time to remove the old carpet. Luckily Murray Frew and I had a small window on the Saturday after the motor bike guys left on the start of the rally until just after 2pm to get this job completed. Once the carpet was uplifted the state of the existing floor was revealed and damage to the floor had been filled with plaster of paris prior to the old carpet being installed. Most of this had broken up over the years and was just powder in large cracks with a couple of holes bereft of any filler. After some discussion as to where to go from here it was decided to investigate what Mitre 10 had in the way of fillers as the alternative was to lay thin board over the complete floor. I found a product called ‘builders fill’ which is a fibre glass product close to that used on cars. A large tin did the trick and this was sanded off Sunday morning and any defects repaired. At the same time Gilbert and I removed the thousands of staples used to hold the old carpet in place. Early Monday morning saw us sand the last repairs to the floor and sweep out the area just in time for the carpet layer to do his thing. Higher grade underlay was used in conjunction with a school grade (commercial) carpet and the result is looking good.
The Library has since had the lighting installed along with new power points. Next week the new heaters get installed then work will commence on the men’s toilet. One of our members commented that it may be prudent to review the use of the existing wash room as the club captain store and instead install a urinal in the area behind the door. (What is now the stairwell). This was discussed at the last committee meeting and I have been charged with pricing this option, including replacing the old wood shed with a larger one which would operate as the club captain storage. VINTAGE CAR RUN TO KELSEY’S BUSH A group of 12 people in 6 cars - 2 Rovers, 1 Triumph, 1 MG (convertible), 1 Morris Oxford named Maisy, 1 Holden and a Ford, left the clubrooms at 1.30. We arrived at Kelsey’s Bush picnic area an hour later, and set up picnic chairs on the newly mown grass in beautiful warm sunshine. There was much chat about diffs, bikes and bearings, and tales of somewhat reckless behaviour in the dim and distant past. Some ventured down the bank to the pretty little stream which emerged from the nearby bush clad hills. A very pleasant outing, and thanks were extended again to Verna for arranging it. Christine
North Otago Branch Club Run Sunday 18th Starting at approximately 1.30pm with a welcome from myself, 15 vehicles left the Clubrooms to start the run. First stop was the water wheel on Old Mill Road, many people had never stopped to have a look at the information and wheel since it has been restored. Then it was on to Weston before heading to Five Forks and up to the top of Dunrobin Road. Again people stopped and got out of their cars to enjoy the amazing views from the mountains to the sea. Then we all headed back down via a route through Windsor and on to Fort Enfield where we stopped for afternoon tea and a yarn. It was a great afternoon drive in lovely mild autumn weather. Many people are now finding either their email or the recipient’s email are having a meltdown or rejecting the email.
