Chairperson’s Report This week has certainly been a reminder that winter is just around the corner with colder nights and having to defrost the windscreen in the morning before heading to work. Winter also means that it is time for another long weekend (Queens Birthday Weekend), that I will be enjoying driving a vintage vehicle for Irishman Rally. I have been spending a bit of time learning how to drive the wee Chrysler Truck as it has been a while since I have driven it. Who would of thought that at 40 years old and having had my driver’s license since I was 16, I would need to have some driving lessons from my Dad. We are very lucky in North Otago that you don’t have to go too far to find some wonderful quiet country roads to enjoy learning the art of driving a vintage vehicle. This month is our AGM on the 9th of June, please make sure to put this date in your Diary. The Agenda for the AGM has been included in this month’s Distributor. If you would like to be part of the next committee then please make sure the secretary receives your nomination form by Monday 7th of June. If you are not able to be part of the next committee but you are interested in what happens at a committee meeting, I would like to extend the invitation to you to attend our committee meeting as an observer. The committee meets on the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 7 pm at the Club rooms. Happy Motoring Rebecca

Secretary’s Report We welcome new members Graeme & Marise Martin who have a 1952 Triumph Mayflower and a 1948 Morris 10 Sedan. As this is my last Secretary’s Report I share some of my experiences in the job. I was elected secretary first in June 2003 and I held this position for four years. Back then there were no computers, everything was typed onto paper and all communication was by telephone or N. Z. Post! It was also the responsibility of the secretary to be the Branch Delegate. I enjoyed attending National A. G. M’s and Executive Meetings where I learnt lots of tips from other Branch Secretaries and I enjoyed the camaraderie amongst members from Branches from all around New Zealand. I was re-elected as secretary in 2010 and held the position for two years. By now we had a laptop supplied by National, however all reports and newsletters were still posted. During this time North Otago Branch hosted a National Motorcycle Rally and an After Rally Tour. I was also secretary for both those Rallies. The National Rally was held in February, the weekend after the Christchurch Earthquake in 2011, and the following week we spent two nights in Omarama and two more in Cromwell before returning home for our Branch Gerald Lynch-Blosse Memorial Rally. That experience was both challenging and very rewarding. In 2019 I was again re-elected as secretary. It has become a different role again with almost everything being done on the Branch laptop and through emails. Now we have moved to electronic banking. Another area of change for me to learn as an approving authority (signature) using this new system. I hope that future Branch Secretaries are rewarded with as much pleasure as I have experienced in this role. Best Regards Kathleen Perry
Club Captain Report Very short report this month as the club next event other than the Mid-Winter dinner is the national VCC fundraiser for Cancer society. This year we have decided to run a Daffodil Car/Bike show. More on this next month but needless to say, if you know of any other car clubs locally please contact me. The more cars we have the more public attention we can muster. I am still open to any ideas to add to the VCC Daffodil day, so if anyone has an off the wall idea I would love to talk about it. If you are not taking part in Canterbury’s Irishman’s rally 4th-6th June you are more than welcome to join Lee and I at the South Canterbury All British on Sunday 6th. Need to be at Caroline Bay around 9am so will be leaving the Oamaru racecourse at 7.45am. An early start but we have enjoyed the other events this club has put on. Derek
Adventures of an Old Restorer. Well I am very pleased that this month was much better than the last one, things seem to be getting back to normal, I am yet to determine what normal is! I have managed to sort out the oil filter problem, the old Vauxhall oil filter which was full of horse hair is not obtainable any more, so I bought a ‘remote oil filter bracket’ which takes a screw on oil filter, and with a lot of good advice from Irelands and Mill Motors I managed to find all the fittings needed to have it up and running. I have also made up a down pipe from the manifold to the muffler. All the best, Clive.

Big Ups to Lindsay McLeod Sitting up in bed, cuppa at the ready, on a beautiful Sunday morning. What shall we do today? How about a ‘running in run’ to Kurow for lunch? Our Wolseley 6/90 is finally road legal after a complete rebuild and years of ownership. So with “Running in Please Pass” firmly sellotaped to the back window, away we went. It had already been driven from VINZ Timaru, home to Oamaru with no hiccups!!! All was going well so we decided to drive to Omarama for lunch, however, time constraints caused a revised route over Benmore Dam, and round the back of Lake Aviemore. We had been discussing how the fuel pump was noisy but the gauge was showing half full, so the penny didn’t drop till we had absolutely run out of fuel. Now what! We were about 5 ks back to Otematata. At least the car was sitting in the sun and off the road. Being a club member of our local VCC Branch was our saving grace. By an absolute fluke, members Lindsay and Margaret McLeod became our knights in shining armour as they were at their property in Otematata making ready to head home to Oamaru. The rest is history and caught on camera for family members to ‘take the micky’ out of their Dad. Lee Brehaut
Club Rooms Upgrade Since the last update the Library doors have been installed. New track was manufactured and stand-offs machined to allow clearance for the doors to run. The runners were finally located having been lost just under my nose in my some-what jumbled workshop. These had been donated to the club by Peter a few weeks before he shifted up north. The sliding doors having been donated by Ernest and Brenda George then renovated by Peter look really good. Book shelves are located into the final locations and Robert has started the slow process of reviewing our collection sorting out things that may not be of any further value to the members and there for moved on. There is a loose set of shelves sitting in the library which will be cut in half and installed under the window if more shelving is required. The new drapes have been ordered and will likely be partially installed by the AGM. Stage two which is the painting of the main entrance/supper area is nearly ready with some remaining pictures to be removed before we can complete this. John Gale spent a few days cleaning up the entrance wall and you would never know that there was ever a club captain’s door in the wall. Lindsay McLeod informs me he will be back with his crew around the Mid-June just after our AGM. The new heaters have been installed and this work also included updating the switch board to comply with today’s regulations. Plunket Electrical have issued a certificate of compliance for this work. Murray Frew and I spent a day clearing out the old loft above the kitchen taking out a huge amount of old timber pegs and rubbish. The area is now clear and swept reasonably clean. The rubbish that could be burnt was taken to a fire pit while others took some home for fire wood. Following on from discussions with the committee we are currently pricing up the installation of a urinal in the men’s toilet. This would be in addition to the existing toilet and would be located behind the existing door with the old stairs removed. The entrance to the existing stairs will remain with a vertical ladder installed in the cupboard leading to the loft. This area will also accommodate the existing club signage for swap meet etc. If anyone has any other ideas or input to this stage please contact Derek on 021 390 518.
May Club Night We’re sorry if you couldn’t come to the May Club Night and you like fishing. There were chocolate fish swimming everywhere. Club Captain Derek gave us an update on progress with the upgrade and Chairperson Rebecca spoke about other ideas she had which would be looked at later in the project. Then Murray Frew spoke of his experience of being a volunteer at the recent huge Wanaka Wheels event. Organisation was absolutely key with a large band of helpers working throughout the whole site. Next on the programme was a fun quiz on a variety of aspects of the Road Code. There was much laughter, discussion, ticks and crosses as we worked our way through 35 questions. Rebecca and Ralph both retained their licenses. (Two or less incorrect). Everyone else had three or more incorrect answers. But chocolate fish helped to heal some wounded pride. Road Code Answers Question 1 – B is the correct answer. The red car must give way because the blue car is coming around the roundabout from the right. Question 2 – C was the correct answer. There are three very simple rules for roundabout signalling. One Get in the correct lane before you reach the roundabout Two As you approach the roundabout indicate in the final direction you will be going (i.e.) left if you are turning left, no indication if you are heading straight on and right if you are passing around more than 180 degrees of the roundabout or turning right. Three Indicate left as you pass the exit before the one you want to take. The Library now has an up to date copy of the Road Code if you want to check anything out.
