Chairman’s Report NOVCC AGM 2020
Good evening and thank you sincerely for coming out on a cold night to support your club. I will make this short, as there is much business to do. Suffice to say that our club is in very good shape, with a variety of events, a steady stream of new members, more cars coming into collections and being driven on the roads. There have been some restorations completed and plans are afoot for the refurbishment of the club room interior. Financially we are in good shape and we have a great club spirit. There are too many people to thank individually, and I apologise in advance for any oversight. Heartfelt thanks to Secretary Kathleen Perry, Club Captain Derek Brehaut, Treasurer Clive Blunden, Editor Graeme Simpson who, incidentally has just done 20 years in the job, Spares Jim Boaden and team, Scribes William Herne and Derek Brehaut. I would also like to thank the wider committee and their efforts. In any club there is always the committed core who quietly get on with the work, unseen and largely uncelebrated. They do things like cleaning, fixing, baking, painting, raffling, assisting club officers, organising runs and rallies, helping members get their cars back on the road or cleaning out their property when they are not quite able to do it for themselves. These are the people who get alongside and lend a hand or another pair of eyes or a particular skill. They visit, they bring food and company, make a cup of tea and just generally get on with it and help in a good humoured way. These people may not hold a public office but every time you turn around, there they are, lending a helping hand. You know who you are and so do I, but more importantly we all recognise that the club would not be the same without you and that the smooth and friendly way the club runs is gratitude in itself. It’s a voluntary organisation and volunteering can, and should be, its own reward. I have thoroughly enjoyed being chairman over the last year, making some excellent friends, enjoying runs and rallies, and appreciating the beautiful North Otago towns, roads and scenery. Thank you for your faith in me, I do hope it hasn’t been misplaced. Peter Fulton
Club Captains Report Following on from the AGM our new committee will have lots of work to get some new events organised. The next event on the calendar is the Swap Meet in November however there is our opening rally before then as well as at least one other run for pre-war vehicles on the books. Yesterday, Saturday 18th we completed our first event post lockdown. The ‘garage raid’ undertaken between Ashburton, Timaru, Waimate and ourselves attracted a healthy turnout in excess of one hundred and ten participants. At least four of these came from Dunedin. From the various feedback I solicited, everyone appeared to have a good day and I need to thank all those who opened their properties, provided vehicles or helped in various ways. Without the crew working hard at the clubrooms to ensure everyone was fed and watered, providing a congenial and warm environment to socialise, the results of our day would not have been anywhere near as successful. To all those folk I say thank you. I am still looking for some willing hands to plan the Windsor rally in December. If you would like to help give me a call or drop in for a chat. During the last month members of the club spent a few days shifting vehicles and parts to assist Jerry and Margaret Wing in their move to town. Jerry has donated a couple of fifteen fifty Wolseley cars as well as other parts to the clubs spares department as an expression of thanks to the club for the help. Jerry and Margaret are now settling into their new property in Oamaru and we are looking forward to seeing them at the club. Derek

Secretary’s Report At our recent committee meeting we did not appoint a Beaded Wheels Scribe, a Custodian or a Newsletter Editors assistant. We may have a member interested in writing for Beaded Wheels and Jim Boaden will continue as Custodian until another appointment is made. We do need an assistant for our Newsletter Editor, Graeme Simpson who has done the job for nearly 20 years. The Beaded Wheels Scribe writes up Branch Activities for publishing in the Beaded Wheels National Magazine and there is some guidance in the Branch Manual as well as plenty of examples from other Branch contributors. The Custodian is responsible to the Committee for overseeing the upkeep of the Clubrooms, Parts building and grounds. Identifying issues and recommending solutions and ensuring access to Clubrooms for hire bookings. The Assistant Newsletter Editor would receive full training from the current Editor but should have some computer skills. The role is a back up to the Editor and maybe required when trained, to publish the newsletter when the Editor was not available. At the AGM Graeme informed members that sites at the Canterbury Branch Swap Meet needed to be re-booked. Recently I spoke with Neil Shaskey who does the site booking – sites do not have to be rebooked but if you have any questions about sites Neil can be contacted on 027 289 6201. We have neglected to get an advertisement for our Swap Meet on Saturday 14th November into Beaded Wheels for the August/September Issue. Please help us advertise this. Two changes of dates for the National Calendar have needed to be made. All British Day will now be held on 27th February and the Gerald Lynch-Blosse Memorial Motorcycle Rally will be held on 17th April. The Branch has received an advertisement and an entry form for the National Veteran Rally to be held in Gore 16th to 18th October. On Tuesday 20th October the Prince Henry Tour travels to Te Anau and back to Gore on Thursday 22nd October. A number of our Branch members are planning to attend these rallies. Regards Kathleen
Finally!! The All British Day held in February seems so very long ago. With the advent of Covid 19, it was only recently that a presentation was made to the recipient charity – St John for the funds, ($710), raised at this event. Chairman Peter Fulton, Gilbert Ellery and I met with David Milne and Maria Dickie from St John at the Clubrooms for a presentation photo beside the local ambulance and Gilbert’s Rover car. You may have seen it printed in the Oamaru Mail. While discussing the event and the ambulance service, we sought reassurance that the funds would be used locally. Along with his and Maria’s assurance, David showed us the inside layout of the ambulance and demonstrated how the bed works, with its hydraulics and very functional flexibility. At a price tag of approximately for the bed, this was a clear example funds were needed to keep this service operational health.

GOLDEN FILM SAE 20, 30, 40, 50 CLASSIC MOTOR OILS DescriptionGolden Film Classic Motor Oils are a specialist range of high quality, low detergent/dispersant monograde lubricants. These oils are suitable for use in naturally aspirated four stroke petrol and diesel engines and classic gearbox designs. Applications Golden Film Classic Motor Oils are recommended for use in veteran, classic and vintage cars, motorcycles, commercial vehicles and tractors, where engine design and tolerances prohibit the use of modern multigrade, high additive level oils. Modern dispersant additives keep combustion chamber contamination suspended in the lubricant, allowing full flow cartridge filters to remove it. Early oilfiltration, usually in the form of a mesh gauze or strainer, is not efficient enough to remove this suspended material. Golden Film Motor Oils are low dispersant oils and allow the suspended matter to drop harmlessly into the sump. Golden Film Classic Motor Oils also have enhanced anti-foam properties ensuring optimised performance in motorcycle and automotive classic gearbox designs. Golden Film SAE 30 and SAE 40 are ideal choices for lightly loaded diesel engines used in canal boats,watercraft, older generators (e.g. Lister, Perkins), etc., where they can dramatically reduce the likelihood of bore glazing. Furthermore, the low level of detergent / dispersant makes Golden Film SAE 30 an ideal choice for 1960s/70s VW air-cooled engines without full flow filters.
The Northland VCC Far North Tour is alive and well. As it has done for the previous 47 years, it will once again be run on the first full weekend in November 2020. That is Saturday 7th November. Put the date in your calendar now.
As in previous years there will be a dinner at the clubrooms on Friday night 6th November. The tour will start on Saturday 7th November from the clubrooms and will travel to the Far North. The finish point will be at the same venue as last year, the Cornerstone Hall in Kerikeri where afternoon tea will be available and the Saturday Night Dinner at the same place. Cornerstone proved to be an excellent venue last year and there is plenty of accommodation in the area. We will be using the same caterers for Saturday night as last year as they proved to be so popular with those who stayed for dinner last year.
The clubrooms in Whangarei will be open on Sunday 8th November for a cuppa and a break on the way home and we may even open the parts shed if you ask nicely.
Kerikeri is only just over an hours travel from Whangarei so that also gives people an option to travel back to Whangarei for the night if they prefer.
At this time final planning is still to take place for the Friday night dinner and Saturday lunch so all costs are not yet established. We expect the entry fee to remain the same as for the last several years at $25 per vehicle and the optional Rally Plaque at $12.
We will have entry forms once final planning is completed, but would ask if you intend to come on this long running popular tour, that you can advise if you intend to come and what meals etc you may require. This is not a firm commitment to enter and your circumstances may change, but it will assist us greatly in planning the event and with catering numbers.

990 Alfa Romeo 164. 3litre SOHC V6 For Sale Straight and original, Auto, Aircon, Heated seats, Self-levelling rear suspension can have 250kg in the boot and ride height is unaffected, hide away roller blinds for the rear screen, electric windows, it appears to have everything except the factory sunroof. There are no slow alfa’s, it drives great definitely no slouch, it will exceed 235kph. The body is electro galvanized thus rust free. Idling in the driveway one day about to go out and the cambelt let go, so it is for sale as is. Everything needed is easy to get I simply don’t have the time. Shopping list; Head gasket set, Replacement Valves anywhere from two to six as it was only idling when it stopped. I have fitted a new Cambelt Tensioner and I have the new Cambelt. HC Viva Magnum HQ6434 Project vehicle. This car is rare and although probably not intended in its day it now has quite good potential as a sleeper. All of its underpinnings would easily accept twice the standard engine output without having to do anything to brakes or differential There is quite a lot of panel work to do but the floor pan, is straight and rust free, the rust is cosmetic not structural. All the doors are still in proper alignment with locks and window regulators all working correctly, the car comes with its keys. The car is complete apart from the driver side passenger door glass which was carefully removed for another car over 20 years ago, the car has been dry stored since 1996 in all that time it has never been wet. Engine;- 1800 Vauxhall Slant 4 SOHC There a number of options for this engine 1 It would be easy to get it started service it and leave it as standard obviously a set of valve springs wouldn`t be silly, this engine didn`t burn oil when I used to drive it and it had to be an ok motor because it is fitted with a CNG kit. 2 There is a spare long block condition unknown, also a cam cage with cam and followers presumably related to the long block. A 2300 Head I scored from a Bedford van with thoughts of making an adults only 1800 motor using Redline manifold and 45DCOE`s. These engines are very strong having been designed originally to have a diesel version in the lineup without any change to the bottom end as regards the crank tunnel or block. Lotus did some fun and interesting things with it they did the V8 and they did a DOHC head which was quite ok but the later Vauxhall DOHC head was supposedly even better. Transmission;- Automatic There were two transmissions available for them a Trimatic and the Borgwarner35 Both these transmissions are more than up for the job, I have no idea which one this car has I have never had cause to even look, when I last drove the car the trans behaved perfectly. Diff;- Huge looks to me to be the same as what you see up the back of a JO Bedford truck. Brakes;- Big disc and big drum Solid rotor with two spot callipers on the front and the rear shoe is the same or similar to a 70`s Kingswood station wagon. Driveshaft has CV joints for high efficiency. Suspension;- Double A arm front and four link rear, coils all round.

Targa 2020 VCC Time Trial – Breaking News The Targa 2020 VCC Time Trial is now being run as two conjunctive events-: 1. The 4 day time trial starting Albany, Auckland Thursday 15th October 2020, travelling over closed tarmac road stages to overnight in Whangarei, before returning via closed road stages to overnight in Ellerslie Friday 16th October. 2. A 2 day time trial starting Ellerslie, Auckland Saturday 17th October 2020. This is a totally new event with a significantly reduced entry fee aimed at VCC members who wish to enjoy an outstanding Targa VCC event over a weekend. On Saturday 17th October, both 2 and 4 day entrants travel over closed tarmac roads on the Coromandel to overnight in Whitianga, where all VCC entrants, friends & family are invited to join for a meal together at the Mercury Bay Club, and where we’ll also be presenting some fun participation awards. Sunday 18th October will see all of us returning over closed tarmac roads on the Coromandel to event finish & prize giving dinner in Pukekohe. The Targa VCC Time Trial 4 day & all new 2 day event gives VCC members with VCC/VIC eligible cars an outstanding opportunity to test their driving & time-keeping skills over closed tarmac stages, safe in the knowledge that they’re all driving in the same direction from start intervals, with nothing coming towards them. It’s not a race, and no special car modifications (roll cage etc), are required.
