For the 23 members who attended the July club night it was a most informative and interesting evening. After our general business part where the gathered members voted on a remit for the AGM to be attended by Sarah, and I presented a 25 year badge to Mike Clifford, there was a most interesting demonstration of a paint stripping system by Simon Cooper of Cooper’s Strip Club of Woodville. Next club night we will have a visit from Tony Haycock, who most of you will know is the Director of the Vero Festival of Historic Motoring to be held in New Plymouth in 2021. He will update us on the arrangements and progress. He has asked for audio-visual facilities so he must have a fairly interesting presentation planned. Tony also represents the Targa Rally, so I expect he will have something to tell us about that as well. The working bee on June 26th to re-cover chairs was well attended by committee and club members. It turned out to be a beautiful sunny day and the working bee, working on the terrace, covered 20 chairs. However the job was far from being finished with many chairs yet to be covered. Therefore, there will be another working bee on August 21st to cover some more. If you have the day available please come along. Start at 10am, finish at 3pm. It’s BYO lunch. Don’t forget one of our most important days of the year, Daffodil Day in aid of Cancer. The date is August 25th. Esther has all the details in her column. The swapmeet is coming up and preparations are under way. This most important event does not run itself, so help is needed. The swapmeet provides much of our income and it is run for the benefit of you the members. Without it the levy would be much higher than it is. Volunteers are needed now, so please do not wait until just before the day to put up your hand. Contact Sarah Howell or Trevor Hardy. Sarah says some 30 helpers are needed. Volunteer now please. The swapmeet is on October 5th. Finally, after 5 years producing our monthly newsletter, “The Tourer”, Esmee has decided to resign as editor. Esmee has done an excellent job and now wishes to pass it on to someone else. So, there is a situation vacant. August 2019 Hello Everyone. The sad news first – Esmee, our Editor of the Tourer, has decided that, due to other commitments, she can no longer continue to act in that capacity. She has indicated that she can continue for a few more months, doing the August, September & October issues, as well as being on hand to assist in the preparation of the November issue. Hopefully, thanks to so much generous notice time, we will be able to find a replacement. As you will be aware, the Tourer is a very valuable and necessary part of our Branch, and it is vital that someone step up to take over. Is that someone YOU?? Please let Stan or myself know if that is so. On a personal level, I will certainly miss working with Esmee. We have had much collaboration over the last few years. And not to mention both being unpaid-up members of the Winnie the Pooh fan club! We wish you well Esmee, and don’t forget to treat yourself to a tiddly-pom or two now and then. I’m very happy to report that our working bee to re-cover some of our chairs was very well attended. So many guys in fact that it looked a little like the Men’s Shed! Just so fortunate there were a few ladies there to keep us under control. We have a further working bee planned for August, and it would be great to see another good turnout. It’s planned to get the rest of our clubroom chairs completed, and, providing we have enough folks, there are other jobs that need doing. Some of these include maintenance on our building as well as tidying up the tractor shed and the bunkhouse. Sunday 25th August is of course Daffodil Day. Club Captain Esther has been working hard at this, and we need a really good turnout for an important charity. Our display area is capable of holding around 150 vehicles; we don’t want to see any empty spaces. So come on, get the Turtle Wax to work and let’s have that car (or cars) out there to do the run and the display. I have information for the upcoming Cook Sestercentennial Rally to be held in Gisborne at Labour Weekend (October 25-28) commemorating 250 years since Captain James Cook sighted New Zealand in October 1769. This run will be the basis of the Hawke’s Bay Branch Annual Safari and they will be responsible for the entry forms. Note that there are two starting points for the rally on the Friday (October 25), one from Napier organised by the Hawke’s Bay branch and one from Opotiki organised by the Eastern Bay of Plenty branch. Gisborne branch will organise the Saturday and Sunday runs. I also have entry forms for the 2019 Taranaki VCC Rubber Duckie Motorcycle Rally to be held 21st September. Should you require further information, please let me know. Sorry, but as is the norm these days, the notices I get are via email, not hard copy, and that is how I would send on to you.

There was an excellent gathering for our July club night. And a very interesting demonstration of stripping by the people from Cooper’s Strip Club. Not the erotic type, rather the removal of paint from various surfaces. Coopers are based in Woodville, and sell their product worldwide. We were treated to a display of paint removal from various metal objects, plus varnish from a piece of antique furniture. The process seemed to be very easily accomplished and left a good surface ready for refinishing. Seems to be a product that can be highly recommended. Next month, Esther has a trip planned for us which should be very interesting. This will be through the new parts storeroom at the Toyota facility in Roberts Line. Don’t miss it!! Cook Sestercentennial Rally Gisborne, Labour Weekend 2019

Brian and I duly arrived at the club rooms to participate in the Night Trial along with the other 11 entrants and their navigators. With everyone there by 5ish we were able to have a cuppa

and slice of loaf or chocolate coconut balls etc...homemade to boot as well I believe. Our briefing of the evening’s run - there were no silent checks (what are they now?) and was not timed. Also there were two sets of instructions so please do not follow the car in front of you!!! There were questions to be answered which were in order, along with scrambled words which were not. These were of the businesses that you were passing when going through the town. The distance for the trial was 40 miles.
It looked as though we had all wrapped up fairly warmly for the evening ahead as the temperature was not going to be kind to us with it getting down to 1 degree AND there was no rain forecasted either. Thank goodness for small mercys as that can change things quite drastically and many a trial has had these conditions and hasn’t been pleasant. On leaving the clubrooms (before getting into our cars) we were asked 2 questions;

What was the name of the vehicle on the front cover of this month’s Beaded Wheels? How many dips are there in the road leading up to outside our clubrooms entrance going North? After all that was said and done you saw this selection of cars lined up from 1906-1987 which was a pretty good range of make of vehicles in the parking area. Ford, Chevs(3), De Soto, Jowett Javelin, Morris, Mercury Cougar, Peugeot, Saab, Mitsubishi, Cadillac. All we needed to do now was hit the road and get on with reading the instructions in the little bit of daylight we had left before the spot lights etc came out to aid us with artificial light. We did a left into Kelvin Grove Road then right into Stoney Creek Road, left into Campbell Road and our 1st roundabout (1st of many I might say) 3rd exit then it was into Reids Line, Taonui Road, Campbell Road and by then we had answered some questions which did not require getting out of the car...well we didn’t anyway. By this time we were coming up to the 50kph sign of Feilding and this was when some of the fun started. Cars coming and going from ways we hadn’t been etc. The questions

still kept coming so we must have been on the right track. Eventually we ended up in the centre of town in Feilding and of course this was where the scrambled business names (about 15) came into play and those roundabouts I mentioned before. The township was well lit up so no more need for the spotlight here. Would you believe we went either 1st exit 2nd exit 3rd exit 4th exit of those 14 ROUNDABOUTS. They may not have traffic lights but they sure have enough roundabouts for a small town. To be fair, I must say I think we did do some of those roundabouts more than once. We managed to get off the merry-go-round but not doing so well on those business names but by now we were starting to feel like a bit of tea so what the heck we will get on with the rest of the instructions and questions to get us to our destination for this long awaited meal.

Moving on, this took us to Lethbridge Street, crossing the railway line left into Makino Road, right into McKays Line, left towards Taupo, right into Beaconsfield Valley Road, Haynes Line left into Levett Line. I’ll pause here as this is where we were to spot a truck as one of our questions. But do you think we could find it and we had a spot light that could see for miles...to the back paddock if need be...but no it was not spotted. We did find out later that the truck which had been there since who knows when had been moved the very Friday before our run and Esther did assure us that it was there on Thursday when they did final their check. I’ll leave it to you to make up your own minds about that one. It was now onwards and upwards taking a left into McBeth Road, right into Bryce Road and taking a left at T we came upon our meal stop at Sculpture Café (Kimbolton Hotel). About 50% of the entrants had already made it here by then and enjoying a glass of liquid and catching up with each other as to what they had given as their answers to the questions. Time was getting on to about 8 o’clock before we sat down to the roast lamb and pork which was the order of the day with

all the usual trimmings. For dessert apple crumble, fruit salad, mini chocolate eclairs and plain ones as well, brownies with custard and cream to add if one so desired. When everyone had finished their meal Esther announced the winner of the trial - the young ones Derek & Rebecca Haycock... congratulations to you both. A big thank you must go to Esther and Dave for organizing this event for all of us to enjoy.
Sunday Run 30 June 2019 We had around 30 people on the run. The day was fine with nice country roads that was travelled on. We went the Sugar Plum café in Marton.

North Cape to Bluff TOUR (Taumarunui to Wanganui) Have you considered joining the North Cape to Bluff tour in September/October? Rob Eason (’54 Ford Customline) and I (’39 Chevrolet) are planning to travel to Taumaranui on Tuesday October 1st. We would then drive with the group through the “Forgotten” highway 43 to Stratford, then to Wanganui, and back to Palmerston North on Friday October 4th. It would be good to have a few others join this relatively undemanding mini-tour, including some pre-1932 vintage cars. You can, of course, join or leave the tour at any point. Manawatu VCC cars by the decade
1920’s 1929 Chevrolet AC International Thoughts and Memories by John Garrett
In October 1929 my father, Wilk Garrett, bought a new Chevrolet tourer from Cooke, Howlison Ltd in Dunedin. Father lived with his parents on a soldier settlement farm near Middlemarch, some 80km inland from Dunedin. Why a Chev? According to father there were far too many Fords in the district already, and a Buick was outside his price range. The farm was on the back road from Middlemarch to Sutton. My earliest memories of travelling in the Chev start in 1944 and involve being sometimes taken to school in Middlemarch instead of catching the school bus. Other local journeys were to Sutton where there was our local Post Office and a Blacksmith/Farrier. The back road had not been graded since before WW2 and consisted of two gravel strips with grass on both sides and down the middle. I recall a trip to Dunedin in 1947 when father and I stayed with his cousin while a new top and side screens were fitted to the Chev. Trips to Dunedin became more frequent when petrol, and tyres, became more readily available. The Dunedin road was rough, with steep climbs and descents and prone to snow falls during

winter. Punctures were common. Chains were always carried. Photo Winter travel in the Chev needed lots of warm clothes and plenty of rugs. Celluloid in the side screens never lasted and so wind blew straight through. How many people could fit into the Chev? Our family after 1948 consisted of two adults and five children. An extra two adults were not uncommon. Luggage and /or shopping had to fit in as well. In 1951, or thereabouts, father pensioned off the last of his horses. The Chev was fitted with a towbar by the Sutton blacksmith so that it could pull a trailer for carting hay, fertiliser and other farm essentials. After all, the Chev had some weather protection whereas the recently acquired tractor had none! I started to drive the Chev in 1951. Round the farm initially, then along the back road and on to Middlemarch. My driving license was obtained, in the Chev, in 1954. In 1953 Father bought a Citroen Big Fifteen which became the family car while the Chev continued with farm use and local running. Father decided, in 1969, that he had done enough farming and so he sold the farm. I took over the Chev – otherwise it would have been abandoned. Marian and I moved north from Otago to Marton in 1970. The Chev came too, on an A-frame behind a Land Rover. The Chev was stored until 1982 when I started restoring it. So what condition was it in, remembering that it was still in active use in 1969 after it had travelled some 82000 miles? Basically it was worn out but still running. Cracked cylinder head, bent crankshaft, loose bearings, no lights and no brakes, body frame woodwork rotten, mudguards broken and rusted as well as a host of minor defects. I got it back on the road and reregistered in 1994. Since then we have travelled 30000 miles on North and South Island roads. I find the Chev a pleasure to drive, but, it is no more comfortable in winter now than it was 70 years ago!

VCC ID CARDS RENEWAL APPLICATIONS
Message from Head Office NZVCC Please note that all VCC ID Cards have an expiry. This expiry is upon change of ownership, or 10 years from the issue date. Your vehicle must also be as described on the Card. A Renewal form personalised for each vehicle ID Card is distributed by the National Office to current financial members, approximately 3 months before the expiration. Even if your vehicle has had no changes, this form must be checked, signed and forwarded to your Branch, along with the ID Card (if the photo correctly shows your vehicle in its present state), or three new photos, as stated on the form. Upon receipt at the National Office, the ID Card will be reissued and will be valid for a further 10 years unless there is a change of ownership or major changes to the vehicle during that time. It is compulsory for all National and International VCC Rallies that vehicles entered must have a current valid ID Card.
