Club Captainâ€™s Report Another month has flashed by with the weather not playing ball, a couple of runs cancelled due to weather one was the thermette run to the Wairau bar and the opening of the new Seddon hall, though not cancelled only had two cars attending which was a bit of a shame as community events such as this do deserve our attention. But one cannot help the weather and vintage motoring is meant to be a pleasure not a punishment and the weather was foul on both occasions. On the other hand, a very successful run to Bernie Millers place at Mahau on the 29th September was a good event with seven cars attending, though not a big turnout it more than made up for it in the happy atmosphere I noticed among those who attended. Bernie has a Model A pickup not too far away from completion with immaculate workmanship from a very competent restorer. Thank you, Bernie, for your venue and hospitality. October has the combined motorcycle and car run to the Linkwater tavern with presentation of badges etc. The date for this is the 20th October, it is anticipated that cars go one way and motorbikes go round the other for safety. If you are attending please make sure you put your name on the list for catering. Also in October is the presidents run to North Canterbury leaving here on the 29th October and returning 2nd November. Route can be either the coast or Molesworth your choice. You will need to put your names down if you intend going. Today (Sunday 6th October) we took a run to Seddon for the steam trains run there, we managed a reasonable turn out to meet the train which looked like it did not have a spare seat. Further down the track: Combined Marlborough/Nelson rally on the 9th and 10th November. Christmas / New Year Barbeque here (33 David Street) on 29th December. It was decided to hold it then as there was simply too much on earlier and from experience this date should result in a good turnout.

Secretary’s Scribblings It has been a reasonably quiet month for us after a busy August. Sharon and I, along with Don and Linda Lange and Bernie Miller were in Christchurch a couple of weeks ago attending the international Model A Day Rally around the City and Banks Peninsular. We trailered our car down to Oxford as it wasn’t going that well. Managed to do the run though spent a lot of time in the hills in first gear leaving lots of smoke behind and greatly lacking in power. Once we got home, with Kevin Millar’s help we took the head off to find a blown head gasket, the third in three years, and plenty of slop in the pistons. When I bought the car, it came with a spare engine, which Rex didn’t know much about. So we have had a good look at it and it seems to be in very good condition so are in the process of installing that in the car. By the time you read this we will either have a motorable car again, or I will have to decide about a major rebuild. From our Committee Meeting on Wednesday. The finances of the branch are very healthy. David is in the process of learning about a new MYOB programme to keep track of this. He has been talking to Westpac about moving to internet and electronic banking as the likes of IRD will no longer accept cheques for payments so our banking will have to be online. This is not a such a big thing as most businesses and organisations operate with online banking and accounting packages but for older people it takes a bit to learn. The businesses I am involved in have been operating this way for years, so there are some of us who are very confident in these processes. After a nomination from us, and the BPHA, Linda Laing is now a Trustee on the Marlborough Heritage Trust. You will have noticed that the Museum has a new display of Chevrolet cars. Thanks to the owners of these vehicles for making these available. We hope to rotate displays every three months or so, therefore if you have a vehicle you would like to display, please let one of the committee members know. It doesn’t matter too much if the car hasn’t been on the road for a while, as I am sure there a many cars in sheds that haven’t seen the light of day for a while. Alan and Francie Paul have donated their 1939 Morris 8 Series E car to the Branch. This has been accepted by the committee and we will see this car in the Museum soon. Also donated is a Honda 50 bike which is now in the museum. If you haven’t got a name badge, please go into Badges and Medals at 48 Kinross Street and order one. They are about $15 and have the VCC Logo on them. They have the blanks there.

Update at Omaka Air Heritage Museum

“Just wanted to let you know that from this morning the SS is on display in the museum. We have placed it with the Ryan ST in the meantime, as we have some events coming up and it won’t have to move to make room for tables. It looks beautiful!” I’d like to thank the guys (Bill Nichols, Rae Fairweather) at Vintage Car Club Brayshaw Park for exhibiting her and arranging delivery to the Air Heritage Museum. A Message from the Vintage Car Club President Thank you to everyone that was able to take part in our National Day - the Daffodil Rally for Cancer. I am looking forward to reading about the various Branch events in the next Beaded Wheels. I took part in Central Hawke's Bay's event and we had a great day commencing with a public car show and then driving out to the Coast for a wonderful afternoon tea at a historic homestead. Thanks to all your efforts, I am absolutely delighted to announce that we have raised $75,000.00 for the Cancer Society! This total wouldn't have come about without a lot of hard work and volunteer hours, so well done to you all. This means that we have donated a huge $175,000.00 over the last 3 years. I hope you are all as proud of this event as I am. While we don't normally single out branches (as this event is about the collective total), I do want to mention Marlborough Branch who raised a massive $17,500 this year. What an amazing achievement from their Branch and just goes to show what can be done. At the August AGM the decision was made to continue to support the Cancer Society as part of our National Day. We do take the feedback on board so keep sending any through to events@vcc.org.nz. The date for next year has been set for Sunday 23 August 2020 which is the Sunday before the Cancer Society's Daffodil Day on the 28th. I realise that this time of year is not the best weather-wise but we need to have our event close to Daffodil Day so as to benefit from their publicity and promotion. Melissa is also going to send to all the Branch coordinators a draft email to go to their local Cancer Society to let them know how we went (if you want to use it). From the Blokes in the Shed… The Major is on an overseas secondment but in his absence the blokes have been working on many projects including;  A quantity of steel framing and roofing has been donated and picked up

for use in the compound.

 The major job of shifting all the axle assembly’s in the compound has

commenced.

 The Morris Marina and SV Morris minor have been sold.  Three Citroen engines and two gearboxes are sold and despatched.

Recent parts to arrive include;  A 1962 Morris 1000 has arrived (see for sale column.).  one Morris 1000 engine and two gearboxes  two Morris eight engines and a Rover three litre engine.

With the Canterbury Swapmeet on the horizon we look forward to customers passing through and injecting some “foreign capital “to our funds! The Ford Model T project being assembled for the Aviation Museum now has the engine installed and been running, thanks to Dennis, John and team. B. Brush .

Your Museum Custodian Update.. Hi folks, Another year nearly gone and we have had a few changes in the museum with the newly painted walls and floor. Also we have a few changes in the display at the moment with "3 Chevy's and a Morris 8 SE", also in the motorbike section we have a few more bikes on display, one being a "Honda 50" step thru. We would like to thank those that have loaned their vehicles to the museum for display. Also thank you to those that give their time on a Wednesday and a Sunday. Cheers Bill

Kitchen Custodian September was a reasonably quiet month for the kitchen. On the Thursday the 5th we opened the Museum for a group of enthusiasts' and I would like to thank Denny and Audrey for opening up and making them a cuppa. We also had a casserole night for a group of twenty-three people this was another enjoyable night and thank you to my merry band of helpers. Natter & noggin night was another good night with a DVD of the all British Car Rally from Auckland to Christchurch. It is fast approaching Christmas and we have been asked to cater for some of the silly season dinners. If anyone (ladies or men) would like to join in helping with some of the functions we have coming up don't be shy give me a ring (02102657507) we have a lot of fun and meet some interesting people. Our Natter & Noggin is on Friday the 25th October and it is a BBQ $10 pp. Our Christmas Dinner will be on Friday the 29th November more information in next view point.

VETERAN CAR CLUB OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA

On a recent visit to Perth we were given a tour of the Veteran Car Club of Western Australia. This club was inaugurated in 1958 and shares the grounds with the WA Car Club and the Vintage Motorcycle Club. A number of clubs are affiliated to the VCC of WA in the metropolitan area, and in seven country locations, and they have over 1,100 members with sections that specialise in veteran, vintage and post-vintage vehicles, incorporating commercial vehicles, single marques and military vehicles. Their meeting room is much bigger than ours but the kitchen is a lot smaller with less than half the bench space. Next to the meeting room is an extensive library of books, magazines and manuals while outside is a large covered area, with drop down sides for sun and rain protection, and a large BBQ beside it. There were several huge sheds for spare parts (although no door handle for a 1928 Chrysler, which is what we were looking for) but it was their restoration shed that really impressed. This facility is very well equipped with a mechanical area, panel/ metal area, upholstery area and a specialised wood, wheel and spoke making, plus hood bow area. The mechanical bit has two four post hoists and equipment such as an oil drain facility, transmission jack, engine lifter and many other items, including a comprehensive tool store. Also included is a range of Penrite products that can be purchased. Tradesman coordinators are available to advise and assist members how to undertake work to their vehicle. 12

The panel/metal area is fully equipped with a raft of panel making equipment including rollers, benders, sheers, welding equipment, and a full array of panel beating equipment including a stretcher/shrinker and old school equipment such as swaging and edge rolling equipment etc. As with the mechanical area, a panel tradesman, together with a sheet metal expert, is available to assist members. The upholstery area is equipped with sewing machines and tables, together with an experienced person to assist members undertaking upholstery work. They also run courses in the various aspects of vehicle restoration. Around the grounds were several forklifts for use. Because safety is paramount, they have first aid equipment (with first aid training undertaken), a defibrillator and a wash station.

MOTORCYCLE REPORT Eight keen members fronted up for the ride to Ward only four of them on two wheels. It had to be the wet cold weather to blame for the low attendance I can think of no other reason for all the other section members to stay in bed, it was not Father’s Day and I doubt 20 odd members all have birthdays on September 15th. After a couple of phone calls the decision was made to take a risk and carry on as planned. Good decision. The weather cleared and the ride was made without incident or getting soaked. Next month will be the combined outing to the Queen Charlotte Tavern. Note the earlier start. Gather at the park at 10am leaving at 10.30 am. With a bit of luck, we will arrive first for lunch. Motorcycles will go via Havelock cars via Picton, once again if you haven’t got a club eligible bike ride your modern or bring the car Let’s show our strength with a good attendance. A recent donation to the branch has been a Honda 50 in what could be described as well used condition. Some motorcyclists may scoff but we have to live with the fact the Honda 50 was voted internationally the motorcycle of the 20th century. Our branch museum now houses the branch 1914 Model T Ford which was acclaimed as the car of the century and the motorcycle of the century. The branch committee will decide the fate of the iconic little 50 at future date. The other event usually well sported by local motorcyclists is the Hororata swap meet, this year saw a good contingent of at least seven members wondering around. For those who have never been it is a mechanical swap meet meaning if it’s not covered in rust or grease or used to remove the fore mentioned it’s not welcome so don’t expect to see pot plants, cooking utensils or aunties knickers for sale, it also has a strong leaning towards motorcycles. Once again this year it has grown in popularity and the number of stalls has increased, more than one member was seen making trips back to their vehicle to unload goodies, Baldy must be contemplating a bit of production racing this year on the beeza picking up a timing side cover with tacho connection and light weight alloy guard, Barry having purchased the WO Triumph which is rarer than rocking horse poop tripped over a spare gearbox third stall in, Ryan has cornered the market on Honda chainguards four at last count also grabbing a period saddlebag, at that point he had a brain fart and bought a Gizmo tank for a dollar “cause it looks cool”, public flogging on next club run. If you were in the market for another bike for restoration, an almost complete very unrestored 28 Harley was there for the taking if that didn’t rock your boat a mid-20’s Douglas probably restored in the 70’s running wof’ed and rego’ed could have been yours, or a selection of 4 Honda trail bikes in various states of repair were also on offer. 16
