Chairman’s Report
First let me thank Rob for taking the Lucas Model A and Kevin for taking the Model T and making them available for the Lucas Family on the day of Ted’s funeral. So we say farewell to a man who has supported this branch over many years in his own way. Obituary follows on the next page. Keep your eyes on the coming events as Jim has areas of interest lined up. We are currently looking at a 40’ container for the parts compound and the unfortunate part is we have to have a permit now. We are also looking at obtaining prices to build a 5x7 meter shed to house some valuable club assets. If we can obtain some club funding to help that would be lovely and would save us a lot of hassle re permit etc etc. Nothing will happen before February at the earliest. Some of the guys are keen to get on with the electrical shed and when the truck is moved we may turn that area into a veranda similar to the on our museum for us to get out of the sun and rest on hot days (getting old fast). I am sure this year went faster than last year I’m sure it has. Just a wee reminder of our Heritage Day on Brayshaw Park on 6th February, the usual things cars etc, and Dale would like her usual supplies of goodies for the day. The kitchen is the only place on the day where the club benefits financially. If you are able to give an hour or two to help give Dale a ring and enjoy the company and have a few laughs. It only remains for me to thank everyone for supporting the branch and its activities and wish all members a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year with family and friends and a safe journey for those who are travelling.

OBITUARY
E.H. (TED) LUCAS
On 23 November 2019 in the care of Ashwood Park, in his 87th year. Dearly loved husband of Bev for 61 years. Ted was a foundation member of our branch when it was formed in 1958 and was elected to the branch committee at the formation meeting. At the 1959 AGM he took over the position of chairman and was re-elected in 1960 and 1961 reverting to a position on the committee in 1962. After that time, he may have stepped aside from branch administration while maintaining an active interest in the branch and its activities. He appears in a 1967 photo as a member of the committee that organised the South Island Easter rally in Blenheim that year. He also wrote the rally report for Beaded Wheels so was obviously playing an active role in branch affairs at the time. Obviously, he would have had a time-consuming role in managing Lucas Brothers Garage and Car sales which would have left him with limited time for branch administration and activities. For many years Teds vehicles were looked after by the branch in our museum and eventually Ted showed his gratitude by gifting his 1914 Ford Model T to the branch. A gift of immense generosity and value. His model A has remained in the museum for many years and on many occasions, he had no hesitation in allowing members to use it on special occasions. He should always be remembered for his part in getting our branch established and as a generous benefactor to the branch. Thank you, Ted.
Secretary’s Scribblings Well I thought that summer was here at last, but the past week has been anything but. We had 120mm of rain over 3 days here at Linkwater with slips down on the road between here and Havelock and the road closed for the past 5 days. It is open now after thousands of tonnes of material has been carted away to make the place passable again. On Wednesday for our Committee meeting I had to go via Picton, taking 1 hour 15 minutes to get to Blenheim where it normally takes 40 minutes. I suppose that is one of the drawbacks when you live in a more remote part of the area, even if it is Paradise. 5
As I mentioned last month, Subs are overdue, and we still have a few people yet to pay. Please do so as from now you will not receive the Vintage Viewpoint or Beaded Wheels. Please also be aware that if you have Insurance with Vero, if you are not a financial member then your premium will be a lot higher, and in fact you may not be covered. From our monthly Committee Meeting on Wednesday: • As you will see from his report, Jim has organised some interesting runs over the next while. Please support these as the more people that do makes it more enjoyable and more older cars to peruse. • We have been invited by the local horse racing club to take part in their Centenary celebrations on January 19th and April 26th 2020. We would encourage those with Veteran and Vintage cars and bikes to take part in this, being vehicles closer to the era when the club started racing in Blenheim. This will be a picnic meeting and participants are asked to attend in period costume if possible. • And of course, the ever-popular Hospice Car Show is on again at the Waterlea racecourse on 15th March 2020. • It was decided to ask the Park Administrators about installing better signage for the Park as many of the public do not know what happens within the Park. • The grounds around our area are looking a picture, and thanks go to Cath Millar and John Monson for their work, and Roger Millard for watering the area. • The veranda area has been water blasted to clean off the bird poo, and more repellent has been placed to keep them away for a while longer. • Quotes have been received from 3 suppliers for the building of the new shed. The committee are working through the best option for this. • Heritage Day is once again on Waitangi Day, 6th February. As usual, we will be mounting a car and motorbike show and display. We will have judging for the best vehicle on show, along with a public popular vote. The kitchen will be in operation again so donations of baking would be very welcome. • Please bring your vehicles out on the day. It would be great if we could have some of our members bringing along vehicles that haven’t seen the light of day for a while. • As a reminder, the VCC Museum is open on Wednesday and Sunday afternoons from 1.30 to 3.30, or other times by arrangement, give Bill a ring on 5784322. • Bill would like some more volunteers to open the museum at these times. If anyone would like to volunteer to add to his list, give him a ring. Usually it is only once every couple of months you will be called upon. Club Captain’s Report Another month flashed by and heading into the Christmas period. By the time you receive this newsletter the run to the Ure Valley will have been and gone. Later in the month (Sunday 29th) the club barbeque at 33 David Street. I will have the parking etc better organized this time especially for those members who are not as agile as in previous decades who can park closer to the action and avoid the obstacle course. We need some idea of numbers so please put your name on the book in the clubrooms or advise me or Dale if attending. Aim to arrive about 1700hrs. We have another run planned for January 12th at Don Register’s place in the Onamalutu which is just before the domain. We were going to gather at the domain but it was felt there would be too many people as the domain gets popular at this time of year and Don suggested his farm which was appreciated and gladly received. Gathering at the clubrooms at 1400hrs for a BBQ. Names please. We had David Sims (the equine vet and racing club stalwart) speak to us last Wednesday morning, January will mark one hundred years of racing at Waterlea. He requests a presence of old cars especially veteran and vintage on the 19th January for a trotting meet and similarly on 26th April for the gallops. Jim McLean, CLUB CAPTAIN

From the Blokes in the Shed November was another busy month for the Blokes. We had a very constructive site meeting with the main committee re progress in the spares department. The outcome was a new shed, for storage of club assets like the mower, trailer, furniture etc. Also Tiger's electrical shed is to get attention with more room, new doors, perhaps a window etc. The yard is now cleared to have another container. So all in all a very satisfactory result. We continue to receive donations of parts at a steady pace and this keeps the blokes busy dismantling vehicles, sorting and storing. At this point a big "hats off" to Tris and a willing band of helpers, who descended on Ken Pascoe’s shed at Renwick and had the clean out of clean outs, retrieving a hoard of mid 30s Chevrolet spares, over two days. A big thank you to Kevin on behalf of the Club, your generosity is appreciated. We look forward to seeing your new restoration soon. Also Peter Holdaway, thanks for your donation of Rover Spares. Our very handyman Ted Bade is out of action for a while after a sort out of his foot. All the best Ted. Congratulations to the organizers of the Swap Meet/Car display held recently in the Council Car Park Building. The Classic Ford Club should be very pleased with the turnout of site holders that filled the ground floor area. Our club was in attendance with John Johnson's Morris Minor truck loaded up with all sorts of delights and goodies to tempt the punters. Well done we look forward to next years event. The Model T project continues apace, it won't be ready for Christmas, but it won't be far into the New Year. Next report will be 2020, wow were did that go. From the Blokes, a big thank you to all members who contributed to the Shed stock of parts.

Update from Your
Kitchen Custodian The silly season is upon us again and each year it seems to come round quicker than the year before. November was reasonably busy, with the Chairman’s run which started on the 29th October and finished 2nd November, then Bill and I spent an extra 3 days in Christchurch with our son. Home for 3 days then off to Nelson for the Bi Annual rally, had a great time at both. MDC had their annual event for the "Clued up Kids" for a week and we put on an afternoon tea for the helpers on the Friday and then on the Saturday 16th November forty-seven members from the Canterbury Car Club called in for morning tea, It was nice to see some of our members joining in with them. The club Christmas dinner on the 29th was a lot of fun, I would like to thank Santa for calling in and also like to thank the " Marl. Vintage Car Club Little Theatre Group" for their production of Cinderella.. A fun night had by all. Next year is starting to look busy. We have heritage day on the 6th February, will be again asking for donations of baking this is another good fund raiser for the club. I would also like to thank all the ladies that have helped in the kitchen during the year. it is with your help we have been able to have these functions and help raise some money for the club That’s it for this year folks. WISHING YOU ALL A MERRY CHRISTMAS, GOOD HEALTH and ALL THE BEST FOR THE YEAR 2020

Museum Custodian’s Note The year has again whizzed by and as you all know we had the floor and some of the walls painted in the museum this freshened it up. Also we have had some different cars on display, and would welcome anyone that would like to put their car on display, we have a 3 month turn around. It is good to keep the display changing.. The Model A truck has had the motor reconditioned but at the moment is away having some minor adjustments made. The club have some vehicles that the members are welcome to take out on our club outings, if anyone is interested just contact the custodian of the vehicle you wish to take out. Recently Ted Lucas passed away and the family asked to have his car on display at the funeral, Rob Galloway took it and Kevin Millar took the " Model T" the family were pleased to have the cars there. I would also like to say a huge thank you to all those that have opened the museum up on Sunday afternoons and to the members that have vacuumed the floor on a Wednesday morning after smoko. If anyone is interested in helping out with either of these two duties could they please contact me also those that are doing it now please confirm you will carry on GOOD HEALTH and ALL THE BEST FOR 2020 Regards, Bill

MOTORCYCLE REPORT
For the November ride to Picton 16 members made a late start from the clubrooms, eleven of them on motorcycles, two more Picton members joined us at the Cockle Bar and Grill. The late start enabled a number of our regulars to take in the swap meet in the council parking building. The verdict on the swap meet was a mixed one. The ones who found something useful said it was okay. Those who found nothing were naturally less impressed, one member sold a motorbike from their stall, another picked up a vintage Indian speedo drive, another a mag dyno so there were some gems to be found. While having a quick look at the display a very tidy 1971 Honda CB 350 caught the eye, the Marlborough VCC sticker lacquered on to the tank should have given a hint to the previous owner and after talking to the rider it was confirmed that he had purchased it in boxes off the late Gordon Findlay commenced tracking down the missing parts and returned it to the road. Again, no problems arose on the ride, long may it continue. Bens Dad was up from Christchurch and rode his Norton making two Commandos with Hutch on his as well, Darryl and Zig flew the flag for the American iron, fortunately the weather that looked like it could turn nasty didn’t making Colin’s precaution of taking the go-fast Honda to get him home dry redundant. One or two new bikes have been purchased recently by members and several restorations are continuing hopefully we may see them out in the near future. On the subject of restorations Colin has been waving his magic Honda hands on the club step thru getting it fired into life and generally tidying it up, there’s a strong rumour that at the Christchurch swap-meet Colin and Nev procured a new set of leg shields for it, thanks fellas. Next get together is our annual Christmas pot luck lunch at the clubrooms. Problem! Our lunch clashes with the Positive Earth Rally in Ross, (no the motorcyclists are not embracing climate change we intend to continue burning fossil fuels at a ferocious rate and dribbling oil on the road for as long as possible, the name is more to do with how your electrical system works) a sizable number of our riders are committed to that event. We have looked at a late change to our date but could not for various reasons make the switch so we will stay as advertised previously. Leave the clubrooms at 11am for a short ride returning to 13
the clubrooms at 12.30 for the pot luck lunch. The clubrooms will be open from 11am so those not going on the ride, older retired riders, ladies including wives whose husbands have gone Positive Earthing can gather for lunch at a time that suits them. Tea and coffee supplied, bring anything else you wish to drink and something to put on the pot luck table to share. I may be a worrier now but a good turnout will make me smile.
Motorcycle Calendar TOY RUN Saturday December 14th Meet at Woodbourne Tavern from 11am, departing at 12 noon, badges are for sale, BBQ at Blenheim School, bring a toy (not soft). Sunday December 15th Leave the clubrooms at 11am on short ride returning to the clubrooms for a pot luck lunch at 12.30pm. The clubrooms will be open from 11am so those not going on the ride, ladies, old retired riders etc can gather for the lunch at a time that suits. Tea and coffee supplied, bring anything else you wish to drink and something to put on the pot luck table to share. Sunday January 19th Leave from Brayshaw Park at 11am, lunch at Havelock, we will be stopping on the way home to view an interesting collection. Thursday February 6th (Waitangi Day) Annual Brayshaw Park Heritage Day display with VCC cars and motorcycles on show. Our usual good turnout would be appreciated, if you have a restoration project you would like to bring along feel free, arrive at your convenience from 9am onwards.

2020 South Island Club Captains Tour I usually say I have some of my favourite roads to share with you and this tour is no different. I was pondering the other day about what makes a favourite road and I’m thinking it is pretty much any road that you have a good experience on. That also however depends on your state of mind at the time. There are a couple of roads that I have travelled as a case of necessity where fuel is few and far between and these roads have not become favorites! For obvious reasons. I have travelled the road from Wanaka to Christchurch and back approximately 450 times over the last 37 years and while I don’t hate this road, I am not unhappy to not have to do it so often now. On the mornings where you are relaxed and just enjoying the ride, I find these are the times I most enjoy, so the road I find myself on becomes a favourite road. For my job in Rangiora I find myself on some new rural roads and some days I have to pinch myself to make sure it is real - I love driving and to do it in an older vehicle with like minded people is just heaven. Both Tracy & I hope you enjoy your time with us and if this is your first time, you will find I enjoy gravel even more then tar seal. This year we are heading south through the Molesworth - I’m hoping it will look completely different going in the other direction. I am particularly excited to show you Mangles Valley. We stumbled on it quite by chance and it shot to immediate stardom. As you can imagine, it has a gravel component! Some roads we have travelled before in part but this enables us to link in with other neat places. The day from Richmond to Blenheim is a short drive as it will allow some maintenance on vehicles and some maintenance on persons and their cladding. The accommodation list will enable you to make your motel bookings early and the entry form will follow soon as there are still a couple of meal prices to nail down. Tracy and I are looking forward to meeting you all again and possibly some new recruits. So welcome along and enjoy the ride. Cheers Alon.

COMING EVENTS CALENDAR This Month…. Dec 15th Club Run to Geoff Buick’s place in the Ure Valley, meet at clubrooms 10am. Dec 15th Leave the clubrooms at 11am on short ride returning to the clubrooms for a pot luck lunch at 12.30pm. The clubrooms will be open from 11am so those not going on the ride, ladies, old retired riders etc can gather for the lunch at a time that suits. Tea and coffee supplied, bring anything else you wish to drink and something to put on the pot luck table to share. Dec 29th End of Year BBQ (33 David Street) from 5pm.

Further down the road …. Feb 2nd Anakiwa gather 1400hrs clubrooms. Thursday Feb 6th (Waitangi Day) - Annual Brayshaw Park Heritage Day display with VCC cars and motorcycles on show. Our usual good turnout would be appreciated, if you have a restoration project you would like to bring along feel free, arrive at your convenience from 9am onwards.
