Chairman’s Report As most of you are aware this branch has been spending a bit of money over the last year or so, this will continue in the form of improvements to the kitchen which is important ( if we’re to look after our members bellies) with a new stove which will double our oven area, plus some improvements regarding wiring etc. Next is the ongoing of the mower shed and the electrical shed, not a lot of expenditure here but it will tidy up what we’ve wanted to do for sometime. The next is the security system which Don has been working on for sometime and at present we are still working our way through the ways of financing this project without hurting our bank balance to much. Hopefully as I scribble this we should have this purchase covered. Last Wednesday I said at our morning tea that although we didn’t hold our “Daffodil Day “ this year we have raised $9,000-00 for the cause and will present this cheque to the cancer society on Wednesday morning 9th of September at our club rooms.

Let me take a few lines to thank all of you that have taken ownership of your branch in doing all of those little things that need doing around our patch. It’s all about pride isn’t it. There’s a little bit going down with Brayshaw Park Committee regards to the constitution and members voting etc. Again we are fortunate to have good people sitting in two of the top chairs helping to guide things along. Keep up the good work everyone. A very speedy recovery to all those members who are not feeling 100%. Looking forward to going back to level one??? Kind regards to all, VINTAGE MOTORING, Kelly

Club Captain’s Report Another month has ripped past far too quickly for my liking. August started with the prizegiving on Sunday the second which was well attended and successfully concluded apart from a few prizewinners who couldn’t attend the day who were presented with their well-earned prize at our Wednesday smoko. Well done everyone. Unfortunately, August was disrupted by the return of the virus which saw our big event, Daffodil Day having to be cancelled. Peter Thwaites ran the annual ‘Mud Plug’ on the 16th August, see Peter’s report of this event with the results separately in this newsletter. There was a short run out to Hawkesbury carriages arranged for the 19 th but the weather didn’t play ball and it was held after the next Wednesday smoko, not quite sure how many attended but it was a good turnout. This was the first mid-week event I had arranged and judging by the turnout it is something worth being done again. This month there is a visit from the Nelson branch to join us for our weekly smoko and parts shed raid next Wednesday the 9 th. Good to see interclub things like this (not to mention inflow of foreign capital) as being good for vintage motoring for both clubs. On the back of the successful historic tour of the Wairau Bar in July There is a short run for Sunday 20 th September, this time on the history of aviation in this district. From the first crossing by air of Cook Straight in 1920 to Kingsford -Smiths first crossing of the Tasman Sea to wartime aviation when Marlborough was selected due to its good weather as the main training bases for our military to the post war years and SafeAir Ltd and to the present. I have roped in Allan Graham to help me along with Paul Davidson of the Argosy Trust and owner of the Argosy at Woodbourne. Paul is a documentary maker by profession and was involved in the final days of SafeAir and has made a DVD called the Final Flight which is well worth seeing and will be available on the day. Also talking to us is Lester Hope, who was an avionics engineer at Safe and a very knowledgeable historian on Marlborough aviation in general and SafeAir in particular and the Author of the book “SAFE IN THE SKIES” which will be also be available on the day. The day is arranged to leave the clubrooms at 0930 travel to the runway tearooms at Woodbourne where I will introduce Lester and Paul, give a brief outline and hand over to Lester who will speak for thirty minutes or so then over to Paul who has a simulated flight to the Chatham Islands in the actual Argosy that did the final flight, this is by all accounts a very professionally produced simulation complete with sound and motion, the normal cost for this is about $25

but he is giving it to us at about $10. The Runway Café is adjacent to the aircraft and they are happy for us to bring our own lunch bearing in mind that they are a commercial business and I for one feel it would be the polite thing to patronize their business on the day to some extent. After lunch we can travel to John Walsh’s place at Fairhall where he has an extensive collection of aviation artifacts photos and memorabilia, it is also the exact site where Kingsford-Smith operated the Southern Cross aircraft from in 1928.

An old Indian chief sat in his hut on the reservation, smoking a ceremonial pipe and eyeing two US government officials sent to interview him. "Chief Two Eagles," asked one official, "You have observed the white man for 90 years. You've seen his wars and his material wealth. You've seen his progress, and the damage he's done." The chief nodded in agreement.

The official continued, "Considering all these events, in your opinion, where did the white man go wrong?" The chief stared at the government officials for over a minute and then calmly replied, "When white man found the land, Indians were running it. No taxes, no debt, plenty buffalo, plenty beaver, medicine man free, Indian man spent all day hunting and fishing, all night having sex."

Then the chief leaned back and smiled, "Only white man dumb enough to think he could improve system like that." Contributed by Jim McLean

Secretary’s Scribblings Last month I attended the National VCC AGM in Wanganui. Please see a separate report on this. There were some restrictions at this meeting because of Covid 19, and the decision was made because of Level 2 rules that any gathering of over 100 people could not take place. Consequently, I phoned Kelly on the Friday evening to talk to him about our Daffodil Day event which we decided then that we should cancel because of these restrictions. We did this with a heavy heart as we know how many people look forward to this event annually, and to raise funds for the local branch of the Cancer Society. With Kelly visiting local businesses for donations prior to the event, we still have a good-sized Cheque to donate to the Society. From our monthly Committee meeting: Well done to Club Captain Jim on the Hawkesbury Carriages outing. What a great collection Dudley has, and he is still in the process of restoring more carriages. Great to get a little more history of our area. As you will read in Jim’s notes, our next run to the Argosy and related items gives us more history, and with some of our members able to talk about being involved will add something to this event. We have decided to continue with the Biennial Rally on 16 &17 October. So please get your entries in, which close towards the end of September. Entry forms were in last months Viewpoint. This is the day of the General Election, but I am sure we will all find a way to vote in this. In the kitchen we have a second stove and new gas hobs being installed to make it easier for our helpers there to operate. Our builders are hard at work rebuilding the Lawn mower shed. After they have finished that, we need to rebuild the retaining wall along the Clubrooms near the front as this has pushed down and is resting on the Museum wall. A comment was made how great the grounds are looking, and thanks go to Catherine and Kevin for all their hard work for doing this. An Eftpos terminal has now been installed in the Clubrooms. Now for any payments you can use your card if you don’t carry cash, as cheques have nearly gone the way of the Dodo. This can also be used for people to pay for items purchased from our parts department. The Branch is looking at putting out a Calendar for 2021 which will feature some of the vehicles Linda has photographed over the year. These will be available for members to purchase at around $10 per copy. Don Laing has done a lot of work obtaining prices and options to install security cameras around our building. There seems to be an element in our society who

like to wreck the work done by our very willing volunteers, and hopefully these will enable us to take the information gathered to the Police to have these people dealt with in the appropriate manner. Thanks to all those who have sent me the information about your vehicles. Please keep these coming in. To those who are not on email, I am trying to update our members vehicle details as there a number who have changed these and have not notified National Office. If you could write down on paper what you have now along with year, make Model etc that would be great. Please give them to me on a Wednesday or one of our runs, or give me a call, 027 247 1089. Light hearted humour Two old guys, Fred and Sam went to the movies. A few minutes after it started, Fred heard Sam rustling around and he seemed to be searching on the floor under his seat. "What are you doing?" asked Fred. Sam, a little grumpy by this time, replied "I had a caramel in my mouth and it dropped out. I can't find it." Fred told him to forget it because it would be too dirty by now. "I know", said Sam, "but my teeth are in it!" Contributed by Chris Bird

Another month has passed us by and Covid-19 is still with us. Unfortunately this has caused a lot of our activities to be postponed / cancelled, hopefully things will eventually get back to normal whether it be this year or next. August has been a very quiet month, we had our prize giving dinner at the Woodbourne Tavern enjoyed by all. Natter & Noggin again was another good evening with plenty of food and our guest speaker from Age Concern, very interesting evening. On Wednesday the 9th Sep Nelson VCC are coming over for a visit, hopefully we will have our new oven installed by then and our first bach of scones made in it. Natter & Noggin for September is Friday the 25th. Ham Steak and salad ($20pp) Lorraine Pyne has kindly lent us some videos of their rally trips to be shared. October has a couple of functions booked, our Biennial Rally, Friday 16th & Sat. 17th and the Alvis car club AGM on Sunday 18th. If their is anyone that would like to help and maybe give an hour in the kitchen to prepare for these functions please give me a call. (02102657507) we do have a lot of fun. "God made you just a little while ago." Feeling their respective faces again, she observed, "God's getting better at it, isn't he?'

From the Blokes in the Shedâ€Ś August/Sept. Another busy month with Roger M, Lawrence and two Johns making great progress on the concrete pads and a new mower shed, meanwhile John S has undertaken the onerous task of sorting our extensive assortment of nuts and bolts.

Ted and Gary are sizing and re-racking our V belts. Bruce and Earl have created a dedicated Austin Seven section with a large assortment of A7 parts. We had had great sales this month and parts donations have been consistent which includes two 1930s Morris 10/12hp ? S/V engines, one Datsun 1500cc pushrod engine, one Ford 100E engine, one Ford Y engine, plus assorted Fordson E83W parts.

MOTORCYCLE REPORT 13 members went on the ride to Canvastown, 8 of them including one lady rider on club eligible machines. 4 non-members joined us at the Trout, 2 of them on very nice P60 Triumphs. Once again, the backup trailer was not used although the backup team thought they were in business when they caught up with some of the group clustered around a machine on the roadside at Foxes Island. The owner had one eye and his nose stuck in the petrol tank checking what was in there. Actually, there was very little in there but he bravely took the option of continuing to Havelock on the reserve tank. We have been concerned about one of our section members who we will identify as P.T. P.T. is a Triumph man. He has a collection of immaculate Triumphs. Some he has purchased restored and some he has expertly restored himself. P.T. recently added two more machines to his collection. One is a 1959 Triumph Tiger Cub Sports needing restoration. A logical and interesting purchase. The second purchase is what is causing our concern it is a 1951 350cc Royal Enfield Bullet. What on earth possessed him! This is a man who buys Triumph tee shirts six sizes too big so he can wear them to bed as night shirts. He once purchased a DVD of the Oscar winning film Chariots of Fire believing with a name like that it had to be about Triumph motorcycles, when he played it and found out it was about the 1924 USA Olympic athletic team, he took it back claiming it was sold under false pretences. If he writes anything about Edward Turner the famous designer of the record selling Triumph Speed Twin, he spells Edward GOD. He actually bought a Royal Enfield! Has he slipped a cog? STOP PRESS. All is well. The first motorcycle P.T. owned as a teenager too young to even hold a licence was a Royal Enfield Bullet it is just a nostalgia trip he is having. We all have them. Motorcyclists all remember their first motorcycle just as other old blokes remember the first girl they kissed behind the bike sheds at school. What a relief, all is ok with P.T. we can look forward to seeing the two bikes out sometimes in the future, we wish him luck. The two L.E. Velocettes which have been part of our museum motorcycle display have been purchased by a buyer from Wellington.

Marlborough Mud Trial The day commenced with a typical beautiful fine winter Marlborough day. Conditions were drier than usual but the 6 courses were still very challenging for all 21 competitors, some as far away as Oamaru. “Hats off” to Giles Gill who not only competed in a three wheeled Morgan but drove it up and back from Christchurch, a mere 9 hours each way! Also worthy of a mention was Ken & Nathan Wilson in the Bugatti “Bugwog” who travel annually from Oamaru for the event.

The day was thoroughly enjoyed by all competitors with a unique sense of fun and banter and is becoming a great family day out. It is nice to see some of the next generation competing these days. The overall title was hotly contested with Richard Topliss the winner, Avon Hyde second and Gordon Dacombe third. Mac McKercher took out the long wheel base title in “Mrs Ferguson” and Linda Topliss took out the women’s title. Our thanks go to the Sorensen family for the generous use of their farm once again. Also a special thank you goes to Lawrence Brehaut for taking over the running of the day after two other organizers were incapacitated due to unnecessary injuries. We sincerely thank all the members of our club and their families that helped out this year, which contributed to making it an excellent event. Peter Thwaites

Targa VCC Time Trial UPDATE Hi VCC Branches, I'm very sorry to advise that this year's Targa VCC Time Trial is now unable to be held in October due to Covid-19 and the change of the NZ election date. Unfortunately Targa can't run an event which involves road closures on election day. Targa had also planned on using schools as service stops, which now may also be used as electoral polling stations. I'd very appreciate it if you would please forward this email to your branch membership database to ensure that everyone is informed of these changes. Also, for those VCC members who may be interested in joining us for a future time trial event, please complete the Targa survey below which will be most helpful in guiding future decisions. Lunch at Fairweather’s and one more visit after lunch before returning to the clubrooms for smoko where hopefully we will have some more bikes that have not been seen before or recently.
