Chairman’s Report Good to see nominations coming forward for your committee for the coming year, a new face or two, really good. You will have noticed or heard of the removal of the Sheoaks on Patchett’s Green - twelve in all. The balance behind the parts shed will be next year if funds are forthcoming. I think the big Seedless Deodara in the corner should also go, in light of the standard/condition which the Sheoaks were in. I have a contact in the MDC to see if they can help with the cost of removing the above and they have agreed to support with part of the cost, but would also like to have a say in what we plant as replacements. In light of our recent adventure into the top of the Waihopai Valley property owned by the Evans family I have made a suggestion to our committee that the branch look seriously at purchasing a Tracking Beacon to go with our first aid kit and defibrillator the cost is about $400. There is a pressing problem coming up and if we don’t deal with it shortly it maybe to late and that is the side chair on the motorbike in the museum. Unfortunately the borer have attacked it big time and it may have to be replaced if it can’t be arrested. That may cost, but we have no option. We are in charge with looking after our motoring heritage and we may have to go looking for funds for this project. For those of you who have struck a rough patch in your journey and not feeling a hundred percent, on behalf of all members we wish you all the best. As this is my last chairman’s report for this current term I wish to thank you all for the support you have given both Janice and myself over the last year and look forward to another good year for this branch and it’s members.

Club Captain’s Report April’s club run was another journey into the high country to Stronvar Farm at the head of the Waihopai river running fine wool Merino sheep owned by Geoff Evans and family. A very enjoyable drive on a great day in a ninety-year-old car on 1930’s type roads. (I always reckon the Model A smiles when it hits the gravel roads). The Evans ‘s made us feel really welcome and Geoff gave us a good run down on the properties history and its running, he is a good speaker and very knowledgeable and passionate about the high country. One of our party suffered a medical incident during our stay and we all witnessed the efficiency of the rescue helicopter service. Though I have carried a personal locater beacon religiously on my person whenever I am bush, I had never seen one used in anger until Geoff set one off. The chopper was there within forty minutes and I along with everyone else present was most impressed with their efficiency and professionalism. (The things some people do for a chopper ride.) Get well again soon please Don.

Members should be aware that our committee is in a bit of disarray because of serious health issues, Kelly has been having an issue requiring hospital treatment in Christchurch and also Chris. Chris and Sharon went to Christchurch for a relatively minor procedure for Sharon but she came back with a very serious diagnosis and she is currently in Wairau Hospital. Please be patient with the committee, we will take up the slack but especially spare some thoughts for Janice and Kelly, and Sharon and Chris in this difficult time while not forgetting other members and spouses who are not enjoying good health.

Secretary’s Scribblings It is a coupe of months since I put pen to paper. Last month five Model A’s and their Crews from Marlborough wended their ways to Gisborne for the National model A rally where 120 Model A’s from around the country attended. Sharon and I travelled in convoy with Kevin and Cath Millar and Alan and Jan Graham. Also from Marlborough were Don and Linda Laing and John and Lyn Pauling.

We crossed on an early Ferry and headed to Masterton for the first night. Up over the Rimutaka hill at about mid-day when there was not a lot of traffic, which made for a great drive. We stopped at the top to enjoy the view and some of the history on plaques there, checked the water and then down to Featherston and to Martinborough for lunch. Before we got to Masterton, we visited the Pointon Museum and vehicle collection. What an amazing collection of cars and memorabilia and period costumes and wedding dresses. Well worth a visit.

Next day to Hastings via back roads as much as possible, with a drive at the end of the day up to the top of Te Mata Peak: which had the cars down in low gear at one stage. What about the views from there? Sunday, we headed for Gisborne. This time on the main roads as there was no alternative but not a lot of traffic to worry about. We stopped for a cuppa at a rest area near the Motu Viaduct and some local children saw the cars and came over for a chat. As we were there a log train went past heading to Wairoa. There must have been at least 100 wagons each taking more than a truck and trailer load of logs which means at least 100 logging trucks off the roads. We got into Gisborne about lunchtime and registered for the Rally. Next we found our accommodation and once settled, back to an evening function and welcome at the Showgrounds where the rally was based. We spent eight nights in Gisborne and had a wonderful time with three long and very interesting runs, Mahia Peninsular, Motu School and Tiniroto, and visited many other sights and areas around the province.

Easter Monday. We headed north to Hicks Bay for the night, on the way visiting the Tolaga Bay wharf where we walked the historic 800-meter-long structure, and driving to the East Cape lighthouse. On arriving at the motel we enquiried

at the desk as to where the fuel station was? Then we were told it was at Te Araroa which we had come through 8 km back, so we had to drive back as didn’t have enough fuel to get to the next fuel stop 40ks along the road.

Next day we headed to Whakatane and had a lovely drive around the coast stopping a couple of times to admire the views. Lunch at Opotiki and on to where Sharon was able to show our group where she grew up as a child and she took us to some great viewing spots. Sharon and I stayed in Whakatane for a couple of nights while the others headed across the island towards New Plymouth and home. We headed south through the forest to bypass Rotorua and to Turangi for the night; then the next day across the Desert Road to Mangaweka where we turned of SH1 to head to Kimbolton to stay with my brother where I used to farm. A couple of nights there and back to Wellington to catch the ferry home. We had great weather with the hood down except for two days with rain so all in all a very good trip with no car trouble, travelling close to 2000 miles.

Some of you will have heard that Sharon is not well. A couple of days after we got home, she thought she had a tummy bug and was in bed for a couple of days when, she went yellow. I took her to the Doctor who put her straight into hospital and after some tests they came up with gallstones, but (possibly) something else was there also. She was flown to Christchurch hospital where a couple of small operations and further tests that confirmed she has cancer of the pancreas. Unfortunately, because of where it is they cannot operate to remove it and it is quite fast growing. After 10 days in Christchurch, she was flown back to Wairau hospital and they have been working on getting her right enough with medication so she can come home. She was able to come home on ‘leave’ today, Saturday, and if all goes well, they will discharge her, and she will be under the care of the Hospice team for palliative care.

So we will be taking it day by day for the next wee while. I will be standing again for secretary at the AGM at the end of the month. Don’t forget - Sunday 30th May 2021 at 1.30pm and please, bring a plate for afternoon tea. Have a great month of Vintage Motoring,

From the Blokes in the Shed… April has been another successful trading month bolstered by visitors transiting to the Ashburton swap meet. Thanks to all the members who held the reins during my recent absence and a special thanks to Earl who became Chancellor of the Exchequer. Donations of parts is still occurring with the recent addition to our inventory of a 1947 Chevrolet engine, gearbox etc all still mounted on the front half of the chassis, plus 1929 Hudson parts including some very tidy body panels.

An Essex four engine, spare block and a rear axle assembly has also arrived. The dexion shelving in the container is proceeding well. Going by the large numbers of people who attended the Ashburton swap meet everyone was evidently gagging for such an event, around 400 sites sold and many local members managing to successfully exchange one load of parts for another!!.

Update from Your Kitchen Custodian Hi Everyone, Another month has passed us by, not sure where it went, the days are certainly speeding by and nights are getting cooler. April has been quiet. The ‘Natter & noggin’ night was enjoyed by everyone, the desserts were yummy. It is always interesting at pot luck evenings as the variety of food is amazing and usually, without any double ups. I would like to say a big THANK YOU to Oliver for the cabinets he has altered or made for the kitchen and especially the cupboard for our glasses, so much easier to just slide the trays out. Again Thank you Oliver.

Natter & Noggin for this month is Friday the 28 th and it is a soup & Bun night. In July I hope to have another High Tea afternoon with either a card making demonstration (maybe make your own card) or something else. Confirmation/ date in the next view point.

MOTORCYCLE REPORT Ten motorcycles plus Paula driving the backup with one old past rider for company left the park for a weekend in Kaikoura. The motorcycles ranged from Deb’s 2020 Can am down to Zig’s 1946 UL Harley. Phil has completed his journey to the dark side arriving on another Honda purchase, his second in two months. This one a nice 1988 Honda Broz, with Ron and Glenn also on Honda’s, Honda was the predominate make on the run. Is this a sign of things to come for future VCC motorcycle events. Electric starters, indicators, more efficient brakes and lighting, modern technology and dare I say it, aging riders seeking better handling, safety and comfit. Bob Dylan is right times they are a changing. Barry joined us on his Norton as far as the lunch stop to Kekerengu with Roy taking the Vincent to Kaikoura returning home late in the afternoon and Carol joining us at Kekerengu. Six Norton riders from Christchurch including some of Ben’s family joined us at Kaikoura. Zig thought the weekend was looking promising when a Mercedes pulled up alongside with the occupant waving her pants through the window at him, closer inspection showed the pants bore more than a passing resemblance to his wet weather gear that was or had been bungyed to his rear carrier, his spare electrical odds and sods remain scattered somewhere along SH 1. Unfortunately, the planned visit to Norm’s motorcycle collection was cancelled owing to a family bereavement. Plan B, a visit to Harmon’s car museum was brought forward. Amazing how small a Morris Minor looks when parked amongst Chev’s, Impalas, Ford Edsel’s and Plymouth Fury’s.

The evening social hour in the Lobster Inn public bar became a mid-afternoon social hour or two which no one seemed to mind. The evening meal was in the upstairs restaurant. Viewing the menu someone remarked the price of dining out seemed to be rising, but the quantity and quality of the meals and the service made the price look more than fair. Some mirth was caused by the expression on one bloke’s face when the spare ribs he ordered appeared to be the entire half of a rib cage from a very large cattle beast. Contrary to expectations he ate the lot down to the last piece of meat and potato fry, that was more than some others could achieve faced with their own generous helpings. It was noted he didn’t need to partake in breakfast or lunch the next day. Sunday morning most of the group met up for a late breakfast before a final gathering and count of heads before hitting the highway back to Kekerengu for lunch. After lunch some quick machine inspections, minor spanner tweaking and checks to ensure the bungy cords were still holding what little luggage that was

left and it was on the road for home. A final stop at the Cob Cottage to collect packs from the back up Ute and everyone was home in time to clean the road grime, tar spots and the seal blood and guts spread on the road at Ohau Point off their motorcycles. We had an excellent trouble-free weekend. Our thanks to Paula and Glenn for the organising. While we were in Kaikoura Roger and Pam attended the Ariel rally in Motueka with 30 plus bikes, it was well attended for a one make rally and a fair amount of mileage was covered over the weekend.

Letter to the Editor MARTIN, David John (Dave):

Unexpectedly at Lake Dunstan Hospital on April 24, 2021. Dearly loved husband of Josephine, loved father and father-in-law of Denise and Gerry (Lake Hawea), the late Jerrod, wife Jill (Blenheim). Loved Granddad of Aaron (Tasmania), Katherine (Blenheim), Eddie (Auckland); great-grandchildren, Leo, Alice and Iris.

Hi Fellow club members. At our Wednesday meeting this morning one of our longer standing members spoke briefly of the recent passing of one of our members no longer living in Marlborough. David (Dave) Martin. Dave was a local member through the 1970-80-90s period .Considering how much effort and work Dave put into our local branch in those years, it was noted (and the member was correct in bring it to our attention) that only four members of the branch attended the farewell for him at the clubs of Marlborough. To be fair the death notice for the memorial service was easily overlooked as it did not include much information about him, so this was not surprising to me. Dave and his wife Josephine, left Blenheim, having lived in Renwick, Seddon, and back to Blenheim again, before departing to live in Geraldine some 20 years ago. He may have finally moved on to Wanaka, as it was there where he passed away.

Many of our newer members would not have known him or of the work and restorations he did. As I understand it, Dave and many other willing hands, took on the job of dismantling the old Cuddon’s pump, appliance and hardware shop in Alfred St, which stood between where Farmers and W I N Z is today. Gill construction had won the tender to dismantle the building and clear the site. The VCC approached Bill Gill (Gill Construction) for the building and were told, ” you have 48 hours to get it down and taken away”.

The team set to work, roof, frames, walls, trusses. bricks etc. etc. etc .They did it on time and brought it all back to Bradshaw Park and over the next months reassembled it to be the museum building we enjoy here today. Imagine us trying to do that with the rules and regulations we have today. Originally a baker and a taxi owner in Christchurch, but a man of many talents who seemed to be able to turn his hand to anything, Bodywork, Spray painting, upholstery and mechanical. He loved car restoration work and was one of those guys who was never idle, always busy, building and repairing. He also played the saxophone as another hobby. Dave carried out numerous vehicle restorations, for himself and many other people. He owned a pair of matching 1933 Dodges he used for weddings, an Austin 10 convertible, the baby Austin now owned by Bruce Rumble and restored many more, including the Austin 16/6 owned by the AA. He became well known for taking two door Morris Minors and turning them into convertibles, goodness knows how many of these he built and he even built a MM fire truck which i understand is in the Wanaka transport museum. He had a very tidy Workshop jam packed with parts, tools and equipment and even a mobile sand blasting setup he had built himself.

Many of us older members will have benefited from Dave’s help and skills. As I came to Blenheim in 1984 ,there is possibly much more that Dave put into the club, he may have been a committee member? This info is only from memory so hopefully correct. So, Dave. On behalf of the local VCC and committee, I apologise that more of us didn’t attend your farewell, but - Thank You for your input to the club. Rob Galloway.

Vero International Festival of Motoring Most of you will know that the Vero Festival of Historic Motoring will now be held in 2022. The dates are Jan 16 to 21st 2022 The organising Committee has sent out to all VCC members by email a request for your expression of interest. . PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU RESPOND to this if you are considering going. Events like this have significant budgets to manage and some of you will recall the last International Rally suffered significant losses. Whatever your view on that result, learnings have been taken and you will have read in the latest Beaded Wheels that the Management Committee will NOT accept the event running at a loss. To that effect they are looking for some surety that entrant numbers will be sufficient to make the event viable. It will not be a firm commitment and I do urge you to respond. If there is insufficient interest, there is a possibility the event won’t go ahead. This is an event not to miss, a shorter period than previous International Rallies, in an area with some great motoring and the time of year hopefully means plenty of sunshine. So, get your mates together, decide what vehicle you’re taking and plan to be there.
