Chairman’s Report Some months back I reported that I wasn’t going to stand again as your Chairman because I wanted to give my health problems a chance to recover. Having finished my treatment and starting to feel that I am back on track and having my left arm being pushed up my back I will give it another year. Most of you will be aware that Bob is standing down as your club captain after four years of exceptional dedication to the job and may I on behalf of all say thank you. Well done. Bob has not been lost to us as he has agreed to organise the Daffodil Day. We have asked other members of Brayshaw Park to join us on the day for one big push to raise funds for our local Cancer Society, so if Bob asks for a little help please do so. We have a nomination for Club Captain, Jim McLean has shown some keenness in doing this, if elected and am sure he will be and he asks for some help I am sure the members won’t be afraid to come forward with any ideas which may help in our outings. From what he has said he has proposed an idea for the first outing which sounds really good. At the time of writing this report we say goodbye to Ed Matkin who is standing down from the committee. On behalf of all members thank you for your contribution to our branch, the job you undertook as safety officer was not meet with enthusiasm but with your long experience you handled it very well. We now have a vacancy on the committee and there has been a suggestion that I we ask for a member from the motorcycle section to fill this position. Well, this is my last report before I see you at the AGM. I would like to thank you all for support, who knows you may even kick me out. Club Captain’s Report April started out with the Kaikoura overnight, which was enjoyed by those who braved the weather. Then came the bus trip to Picton to catch the steam train. This was the last trip for the season, and was enjoyed by 50 happy people. Also the same day cars went to he opening of the Seddon railway station which is now a cafe and wine shop. This was a memorable event! Next the Air Show, where Pat again managed to get approximately 40 of our cars onto the airfield, for a price we could afford (free). A great weekend! The trip to Durville Island was eventful with a minor hiccup just out of Havelock, which saw us return to the wharf. A few running repairs (and they were literally running) talk about a fast mechanic! Then we were off to Durville at a quick 25knots for lunch at the resort and a beer or coffee. On to French Pass, which was a bonus, then back to Havelock for 58 happy Mariners! Bob O’Malley Club Captain
Update from Your Social Convenor Hi Everyone, Another month has passed and now we are starting to feel the cooler weather, nights are certainly cooler making it easier for a good nights sleep. Well, April was a quiet month in the Kitchen with only the ‘natter and noggin’, this was another good night with our pot luck quiche/pie meal. Not a lot happening in May, we have our Mothers Day outing (Sunday 12th) then our afternoon tea is back at club rooms served by the husbands. Sunday 19th May is the AGM and afternoon tea, ladies a plate please. Our natter & Noggin night Friday 31st is the Night trial and will be a Soup & Bun night. Cheers from the Kitchen

Secretary’s Scribblings We are getting closer to the shortest day, only about 50 days to go! The Model A didn’t make it to Kaikoura as we were just about to get in it on the Saturday morning when we looked at the weather forecast and decided we didn’t want to get wet so took the V8 instead. What a great trip though as it stayed dry until we got to Kaikoura, and then it bucketed down in the evening and all Sunday. Never mind, it is always great driving an old car. It was good to do a road trip to Kaikoura to meet up with fellow enthusiasts from Canterbury. Thanks to Cath Miller for organising this wee jaunt for us which included a visit to the Geoff Harman’s car collection, of over 40 50’s and 60’s American cars all in a Kaikoura ‘60s themed painted shed. And weren’t the paintings on the walls awesome? These guys are in the process of turning the old Mitre 10 building into a car museum, and it will certainly be worth a visit when completed. The evening meal was at Donegal House with about 110 people sitting down to a great spread, and music and dancing provided by a Country music couple which was great. The Sunday was a bit of a washout as it was too wet to visit the Lavender farm at Kekerengu on the way home, so that will now be another day. Other members travelled near and far over Easter with the National Model A Rally in Te Anau, the Easter Rally in Ashburton and the Omaka Air Show, all had participants from the branch attending. From our Committee Meeting on Wednesday. The motorcycle rally committee has been wound up, with the balance of funds from this very successful event transferred into the Branches bank account. Once again, A very big thanks to all those involved in this great weekend. Bob has organised Mother’s Day out to a winery restaurant on the 12th May. If you want to come, please get your name down in the Redman room or let Bob or one of the Committee know. Also, on the 31st May is our annual night trial, being organised by last year’s 10
winners, Kevin and Cath Millar. Come along and have a go, it is a lot of fun. After that is our monthly Noggin and Natter with Soup and Buns.
There has been a bit of trimming and removing of overgrown vegetation around the grounds, so thanks to those who have been involved. Painting has been completed on the gable end of the clubrooms, and the painter made comment that some of the cladding is cracking and deteriorating so will need to be replaced in a year or so. The Museum is back up and running with its new coat of paint and a tidy up, and the cars are back in residence. The committee has been working on a Policy for the use of the Branches vehicles, with a few rules set out to follow and what the responsibility of the user is. Both Bob O’Malley and Ed Matkin are stepping down from the Committee at our AGM. Many thanks go to these two for the work put in, and especially Bob who has been Club Captain for four years, and hasn’t he organised some great places around Marlborough to visit! Our branch AGM is coming up on Sunday 19 May. Elsewhere in the Viewpoint will be information about this, and nomination forms. If you are at all interested in the running of our great branch, please consider putting yourself up for election onto the committee. We need nominations for Club Captain and at least one committee member. It would be great if one of our motorcycle fraternity put their name forward. Have a pleasant month of vintage motoring. Welcome Correction to our new members ... Last month I made a bit of a booboo when welcoming new members to the Branch. I had Kevin and Alison Murphy’s surname wrong, so I apologise for that, and welcome you to the branch with your 1923 Ford Model T. I hope you will join us for our runs, our morning teas each Wednesday at 10 am and our Noggin and Natters on the last Friday evening of each month where we get together for a meal and a drink and tell more lies, or should I say stories about what we get up to. 11
From the Blokes in the Shed‌ Here we are in May, A.G.M coming up and the end of our financial year for the shed and a new beginning. Now, the money side of the shed is quite important for our club, but just as important is our ability to be able to help members (from across New Zealand) to find that necessary part for their pride and joys and at a fair and an agreed on price. It's most satisfying. So, this last month has been yet another good month with all sorts of positive things happening and achieved. The container is now finished and being filled with rear axles, diff heads and ancillary gear, looking great. The Morris Oxford Traveller has sold for a fair deal, it created a lot of interest. Many thanks to Don Laing for handling this internet sale. You will read the article elsewhere of the building up of a 1914 Model T running gear by our members for the Omaka Classic Fighters Trust, which can be viewed up at the shed. VCC Marlborough Volunteers take on a build of a 14/18 WW1 era Model Ford T….
A couple of months ago I received an email from the Omaka Classic Fighters Trust asking what the possibility was of locating the running gear of a 14/18 First World War era model T Ford. This was to create an ambulance to be part of the ground theatre entertainment of the air show. One Wednesday morning I gathered a small group of Model T buffs and interested members together and put the challenge to them. I tell you, I couldn't be more proud of our members, within half an hour a 1916 radiator appeared along with enthusiast promises of wheels, chassis, front and back axles, steering box, bonnet and a built up, ready to go engine and transmission. I was rapt and stunned. As one of the group said, “we take our vintage vehicle to the show, get a free double pass. It's the least we can do”. What a great attitude. Thanks men. MOTORCYCLE NEWS Our April ride to support the Ulysses Air Ambulance fund raiser did not attract a big attendance. Five motorcycles and the back up turned up at Brayshaw Park. Damian went to the assembly point at Picton driving his Hitler’s Revenge and Mac at the Blenheim lunch stop. It has been some time since we last took part on the ambulance ride and I felt, like us, the Ulysses turnout was lower than what I remember. Talking to one of their stalwarts he agreed their numbers have fallen off a bit as the number of members who have ceased riding after living up to their slogan, growing old disgracefully, has exceeded the number of recruits. Also, the cost of registering the large motorcycle they ride can now cost in excess of $500. How lucky are we the VCC has negotiated a reduced fee for our motorcycles. Perhaps we should continue supporting the ambulance ride to help keep the service operating. Note in our events calendar the earlier start time for the ride to Canvastown. This is done so those of you who wish to get back for the branch AGM can do so. Yeah! Well, the opportunity is there. A back up will be required as I am not available. We are about to start a new branch motoring season, with the National M/c rally behind us, we can think about our own activities and we have not had an away trip for several years and perhaps we should give some thought to having a weekend away, Kaikoura – Portage? Challenges facing FOMC & motoring clubs BY ROY HUGHES FOMC N ATIONAL SECRETARY
As the black cloud of the Zero Carbon Bill looms large this year we may be looking back at the last summer of unfettered and affordable participation in our many motoring activities. All round the country a succession of displays and other events continued to draw large crowds of committed enthusiasts and the general public. So it is hard to believe any sensible government would deliberately curb or cut out such an essential part of our culture.
But the degree of fanaticism behind inflicting a carbon free future on New Zealand tells us the FOMC must be fully resourced and prepared to counter with all the data and rational argument we can muster. Also on the Government agenda this year is the previously postponed revision of the Incorporated Societies Act. Dropped from the Parliamentary calendar with the change of government a similar Incorporated Societies Bill is projected to appear on the Order Paper during the next parliamentary session. Following up on our previous submissions the FOMC will be seeking to ensure none of the provisions in the new Act will place unnecessary or excessively onerous requirements on those clubs which are incorporated societies. As well as the two pending pieces of legislation other issues the FOMC will be working on the year ahead are reducing the age of vintage classification vehicles from 40 to 30 years and increasing the WoF period from six months to one year. To be effective in securing the best outcomes for heritage and recreational vehicle owners and their clubs will require an increased investment of time and effort on the part of your executive team.
At the last AGM the delegates approved increasing the subscription rate to offset the possibility of ongoing deficits in the FOMC accounts. However an analysis since has indicated projected costs can be covered if we can just recover the subscriptions of the clubs we have lost touch with in recent years. In many cases it is because elected officials and addresses have changed without the FOMC being informed. So could clubs please make a point of 16
ensuring their subscription payments are up to date and that address changes have been passed on.
Significant savings can also be achieved if the need for mailouts and printing the “Wheel Torque” are reduced. It would be helpful if all clubs could provide email contact addresses and indicate that digital communication will meet their needs.
ZERO FUTURE FOR CLASSIC MOTORING? Climate Change Minister James Shaw dreams that within half a lifetime 95 per cent of our vehicle fleet will be electric powered. If his vision is to be achieved Kiwi vehicle enthusiasts would become as rare as the Kakapo. So with our species so seriously threatened the FOMC joined the more than 14,000 organisations and individuals who responded to the Minister’s call for advice on how New Zealand might reduce its carbon emissions. While acknowledging many of our members may welcome the benefits of a low-emissions economy we also don’t want any strategies implemented to have a needlessly negative impact on a large and valuable constituent of the existing economy. New Zealand’s heritage transport fleet comprises a multi-billion dollar asset. The total value of the accumulated heritage collections of just the FOMC’s membership can be conservatively estimated at somewhere in excess of $5 billion. And there are hundreds of other recreational motoring clubs not yet members of the FOMC, as well as thousands of individual enthusiasts and collectors. Unlike New Zealand’s historic buildings, films, art, technology etc. much of our largely irreplaceable transport heritage is being stored and preserved almost entirely by private owners at no cost to the State or impost on the community. If all those cherished vehicles effectively became obsolete, unusable and perhaps largely valueless as a result of any legislated curtailment of our current access to fossil fuels or viable alternatives the FOMC would want provision made in the proposed legislation to compensate the owners for the losses suffered. A comprehensive survey by the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs found the contribution heritage motoring makes to their economy exceeds $10 billion annually and had grown almost 28 per cent in the previous five years. It provides jobs for 35,000 people and generates more than NZ$1 billion in 17
overseas revenue. While similar data is not available here many successful firms rely on the repair or restoration of New Zealand’s fleet of heritage vehicles to provide jobs for thousands of skilled and valued workers. And beyond the bounds of the restoration industry there are also a vast number of other commercial operators such as magazine publishers, holiday resort owners and restaurateurs who depend on the steady flow of business from motoring enthusiasts to maintain their viability. How all those hundreds of firms and thousands of workers directly dependent on the heritage motoring industry will be compensated for the loss of their previously active role in the economy would need to be addressed in any proposed legislation. To achieve net zero carbon emissions converting New Zealand’s vehicle fleet to 95 per cent electric is the proposed goal in the discussion documents. But various research studies have shown lithium ion batteries are also a major source of CO2. Just the manufacturing of the 100kWh battery for a Tesla creates 17.5 tonne’s of CO2 or more than would be produced by an average New Zealand petrol-fueled vehicle being driven for nearly 100,000kms or approximately eight years. If the useful life of lithium ion batteries continues to be only two to three years, requiring private vehicle owners to replace their Suzuki Swifts or Toyota Corollas or cherished classics with Nissan Leaf's or Teslas could effectively more than double the actual CO2 emissions generated by many of those vehicle users. Electric vehicle manufacturing technology still requires significant further development before affordable batteries of adequate capacity for longer distances are widely available. Until then, in many instances, any legislated form of enforced conversion to electric vehicles could have the unintended effect of significantly increasing worldwide CO2 emissions. Despite the determination of our Climate Change Minister the apparent impracticality of replacing the nearly four million internal combustion vehicles in the New Zealand fleet with electric-powered alternatives by 2050 would seem to be insurmountable. With around 12,000 electric vehicles on the road to date and new or used fossil-fueled imports being introduced at around 300,000 a year it would take a much greater economic upheaval than has even been outlined in the discussion documents to achieve anywhere near the net zero 18
carbon target by 2050.

Lyndall feels “There should be discussion about having a stronger connection with the FMOC”. In her email she said “at morning tea I gave a copy to Chris Bird. He said we subscribed to that club. I hadn’t heard or read similar discussions from VVVC! (The) Article is very pertinent though as we seem to be being hustled by the far-left!! Until electricity can be stored for weeks if not months then the ‘electric takeover ‘ can’t happen?? It wouldn’t be a smart govt. who introduces impossible targets at this stage. Cheers Lyndall”

An Irishman walks into a bar in Dublin, orders three pints of Guinness and sits in the back of the room, drinking a sip out of each one in turn. When he finishes them, he comes back to the bar and orders three more. When he comes back to the bar for the second round, the bartender says, “I don’t want to intrude on your grief, but I wanted to offer my condolences on your loss.” The Irishman looks quite puzzled for a moment, then a light dawns and he laughs. “Oh, no, everybody’s just fine,” he explains, “It’s just that me wife had us join that Baptist Church and I had to quit drinking. 'Please allow me to help. I'm a Physical Therapist and I know I could relieve your pain if you'd allow me,' she told him. 'Oh, no, I'll be all right. I'll be fine in a few minutes,' the man replied. He was in obvious agony, lying in the fetal position, still clasping his hand at his groin. At her persistence, however, he finally allowed her to help. She gently took his hands away and laid them to the side, loosened his trousers and put her hands inside.
