Chairman’s Report First let me take the opportunity to welcome new members Mike & Deirdre Hole from Ward and Owen Glover from Blenheim, please make yourselves known, join in our club activities and enjoy yourselves. For those of you who read our minutes of your committee you will note that we are ticking along quite well and things get attended to in a reasonable time and expenses are kept in reasonable balance, as you can see the branches finances are very healthy. Questions have been asked “why are we holding this amount of money?” Well I think your committee has been very responsible. This branch has not always had the luxury of a good amount of revenue, but in saying this there is some expenditure and improvements to the Redman Room sound/noise control, quotes etc looked at (this is not going to be cheap) but necessary. Another quote to take out 1 tree which again is not cheap but necessary. There’s also a wee bit of work to be done in fixing the retaining wall on the south western corner of the museum and I have been informed that the roof of the museum may need painting and we also have purchased a new photocopier. So while everything looks Rosey, your committee is mindful of up and coming expenses plus the ones you don’t see coming like vehicle maintenance. So don’t get carried away, think about what your committee is working towards. I am a little concerned that we may not get a chairman’s run in before the AGM with all this level 2-3 business going on / no certainty around anything. There is some concern among the committee that the coming events are not being read on the back page, so we are going to try moving this information to the front of the magazine. (note THIS MONTHS EVENTS appear inside the front cover, they also appear at the back page along with the future events. A copy of the events page is available from the Clubrooms on a Wednesday.) For those of you who have been unwell or have had operations we hope to see you soon.

Secretary’s Scribblings Aren’t we very lucky we don’t live in the Auckland region with 2 level 3 lockdowns there in the past month. These lockdowns make it very difficult for organisers of any event to plan for the future. Sadly, the Art deco show in Napier was cancelled although the Vintage Car component mostly went ahead, but the Biennial National Motorcycle to be held in the Wairarapa in a couple of weeks’ time has been cancelled. The organisers have some quite major expenses to pay out so unfortunately because of the uncertainty of the Auckland situation where quite a number of entrants were coming from, the decision has been made to cancel the outing. From our Committee meeting on Wednesday. Club Captain, Jim McLean is a very busy man with a major project being worked on. Because of this he has little time for VCC activities, so the committee has organised a few things in his absence. If anyone has an idea for a run somewhere over the next few months, please let Kelly or me know. There was discussion about Natters and Noggin’, as not that many members are attending. Perhaps this is because people do not know what is on so after discussion it was decided that the Events Calendar needs to be shifted from the back of the vintage viewpoint to the 2 nd page, as some people cannot read as far as the back page. But please be aware that the Natter & Noggin’ is always on the last Friday of the month. The new doors and windows have been installed in the Electrical shed. Thanks to our building team for all their hard work on the refurbishment of this building. Harris Glade gardens are looking very tidy. Thanks to Catherine and Kevin for their hard work in keeping the gardens looking great, and to Roger for turning on the sprinklers to keep the lawns green. In the Museum, a great deal of concern and dismay has been expressed that the Branches’ Ford Model A Truck has had the tubes in the tyres removed by some unknown person and these have been swapped for motorcycle tubes. Rob said that new correct tubes were put in the tyres some 18 months ago. If anyone knows anything about this, please let one of the Committee know. The Branch Vehicle Policy has been reviewed to add that Branch vehicles will only be available for members taking part in a Marlborough VCC sanctioned event. After discussion it was decided that a couple of clauses be changed to allow vehicles out only for day trips unless specific requests are ratified by the Committee. What is our very successful National VCC Day - Daffodil Day will be held nationally on Sunday 22nd August 2021.

Kelly has obtained a price to remove the Sheoak from beside the gate into Patchett’s Green, as the size of the tree is pushing the gate post out of alignment. The quote is for $1,500 + GST. This includes taking the rubbish away and cutting up the remaining wood for firewood. A suggestion was made that we remove all these large trees and Kelly will talk to the company involved. Trophies presented at the Mid-winter dinner in 2020 need to be returned so they can be allocated to the new winners. Our next Committee meeting will be held on 28 th April. This is because a number of the Committee will be in Gisborne over Easter for a National Model A Rally. The Branch AGM will be on 30 th May. From the Blokes in the Shed… From late December 20 to the end of February saw a large volume of donated parts arrive, many of which have sold promptly. Grateful thanks to all our generous donors. The Morris 1000 has been sold and awaits pick up to be transported to Christchurch. A Morris Oxford MO series’s engine and gearbox has been sold to a Nelson owner. The International C1 1/2 ton truck project still awaits a new owner. A variety of smaller parts including car badges, mascots etc plus motorcycle parts were sold at the recent Nelson swap meet, which was a successful event for the Nelson Club and which, fortunately, was able to slot into Level one COVID between two lots of level two ! Thanks to Trevor and Glenn for their assistance. The building team has made impressive progress on the electrical shed expansion with many new storage shelving units fitted and a new front door and window constructed. The sparky team is now loading the shelves with stock. Sales for the first two months of 2021 have been encouraging, despite the uncertainty of COVID levels which unfortunately appears to be with us for the immediate future.

Hi Everyone, Gosh March already hard to believe that we are into the 3rd month. A few functions coming up this month, a couple of tour groups and afternoon tea for the Fire brigade, as long as we keep that sneaky virus away. A big thank you to everyone that donated baking for Heritage day and the ladies that helped in the kitchen. Natter & noggin is on Friday the 26th and it will be a pot luck tea

MOTORCYCLE REPORT Our motorcycle display on Heritage Day received some good comments from the public and from our fellow branch members. Twenty-Eight machines were lined up with all the VCC categories represented. Sounds good but actually we cheated a bit. We had bikes from the museum, Glenn provided seven and George two meaning ten other members provided machines. Where was everyone? Well Waitangi Day this year created a long weekend so possibly it was a good opportunity for some relaxing family time in the sounds, the city or a family, old friend’s or borstal reunion. There were also other activities, e.g. the Bush Pilot’s event at Omaka. The next two Waitangi Days will also be on long weekends which may reduce participation levels again. Thanks to those who did make it and especially to those who helped out on the day, prior to the day and after the day. It was gratifying to have members who are not motorcyclists helping push motorcycles from the museum up to the display area and back to the museum. In the absence of last year’s Keown Cup winner Ed Matkin took on the difficult job of picking this year’s winner. Thanks Ed. Our second event for the month was the Nelson swap meet. At least eight of our motorcycle members were seen poking around amongst the stall sites and some bits and pieces were purchased and some unwanted parts got rid of including some from the branch spares. As is becoming usual with most swap meets parts for early motorcycles are getting scarce. However, it was another day out, a catch up with our VCC neighbours including some ex-Marlborough members and it beats mowing the lawns. The following day it was our monthly ride and we had a good turnout for the ride up to the small “That’s Fabulous” roadside café refreshment’s stop just west of the Wash river. Seventeen riders plus Ed and Julie in their new Jaguar convertible (wow) and the backup made the trip a total of 20, plus 2 other riders who turned up at the park for the pre ride exchange of news and views. Alas one rider turned back near Marchburn when his new restoration felt the heat (32 degrees) the uphill gradient, the headwind and the recent rebore and the motor started to nip up.

The little lady in her two mini shops, one for cooking and one for ice creams handled our influx plus a few passing travellers without getting to flustered even if the odd blasphemy and swear word crept in, delivered with style and a smile. The rush over she came out and took photos of men and machines, sat down with us for a chat, made sure no one had been missed in the rush and invited us all back again even extending the P.R. exercise by handing out some free ice creams. Damn it, what have Woody and Glenn got that I haven’t. Shortly before we left, he who had turned back arrived on the same machine having looked it over and made minor alterations to the carby mixture. Brave man. Some riders headed straight home, some stopped for refreshment at the Valley Tavern and the backup stopped to load up the new restoration, this time a fuel line fitting had cracked leaving a tankful of fuel in a thin line down Highway 63. The bike loaded on, the rider kicked the gravel in disgust and the sole peeled off his motorcycle boot. It just was not his day. He took it all in good part and even his language was not as colourful as the friendly lady at the roadside café. On being delivered home his good lady was ready to greet him, not with condolences, but with a camera to take a shot of his m/c on the trailer. We sympathise. Apart from the one member’s mishaps it was a good day out. Kudos to Tony on the CZ who rode the smallest bike up the valley and Viv on the 350 AJS the oldest bike to make it there and back well done.

Letters’ to the Editor… Motorcycle and / or branch Members Can You Help? Hi Marlborough Vintage Car Club. My name is Daniel and I have a sightly less than usual request. I'm on the search for an old family machine that I'm particularly fond of. My Grandfather, Ron Turner, owned and somewhat tidied up a motorcycle in his later years. Ron passed away a few years ago now and I have very old memories of the tatty old bike. I'm quite keen on following up with where the bike has got to, I'm almost certain the new owner is still in Blenheim and that they have further tidied the bike. I last saw the bike at Ronald's funeral where the new owner brought it by to show respect. I'll never forget the sound of the bike on that day, something that was truly special. I remember the bike being a 1950's BSA Bantam. I would dearly enjoy to hear from the current owner and would be grateful if you could put the word out within the club. Thank you, Daniel Males. For those 55 or above …. This is for you. I really like what is said here and am going to try my best to follow it. Thank you to the person who wrote this. Between 55 and death. It's time to use the money you saved up. Use it and enjoy it. Don't just keep it for those who may have no notion of the sacrifices you made to get it. Remember there is nothing more dangerous than a son or daughter-in-law with big ideas for your hard-earned capital. Warning: This is also a bad time for investments, even if it seems wonderful or fool-proof. They only bring problems and worries. This is a time for you to enjoy some peace and quiet. Stop worrying about the financial situation of your children and grandchildren, and don't feel bad spending your money on yourself. You've taken care of them for many years, and you've taught them what you could. You gave them an education, food, shelter and support. The responsibility is now theirs to earn their own money. Keep a healthy life, without great physical effort. Do moderate exercise (like walking every day), eat well and get your sleep. It's easy to become sick, and it gets harder to remain healthy. That is why you need to keep yourself in good shape and be aware of your medical and physical needs. Keep in touch with your doctor, do tests even when you're feeling well. Stay informed. Always buy the best, most beautiful items for your significant other. The key goal is to enjoy your money with your partner. One day one of you will miss the other, and the money will not provide any comfort then, enjoy it together. Don't stress over the little things. You've already overcome so much in your life. You have good memories and bad ones, but the important thing is the present. Don't let the past drag you down and don't let the future frighten you. Feel good in the now. Small issues will soon be forgotten. Regardless of age, always keep love alive. Love your partner, love life, love your family, love your neighbour and remember: "A man is not old as long as he has intelligence and affection." Be proud, both inside and out. Don't stop going to your hair salon or barber, do your nails, go to the dermatologist and the dentist, keep your perfumes and creams well stocked. When you are well-maintained on the outside, it seeps in, making you feel proud and strong. Don’t lose sight of fashion trends for your age, but keep your own sense of style. You ’ve developed your own sense of what looks good on you – keep it and be proud of it. It ’s part of who you are. ALWAYS stay up-to-date. Read newspapers, watch the news. Go online and read what people are saying. Make sure you have an active email account and

try to use some of those social networks. You'll be surprised what old friends you'll meet. Respect the younger generation and their opinions. They may not have the same ideas as you, but they are the future, and will take the world in their direction. Give advice, not criticism, and try to remind them that yesterday's wisdom still applies today. Never use the phrase: “In my time.” Your time is now. As long as you ’re alive, you are part of this time. Some people embrace their golden years, while others become bitter and surly. Life is too short to waste your days on the latter. Spend your time with positive, cheerful people, it'll rub off on you and your days will seem that much better. Spending your time with bitter people will make you feel older and harder to be around. Do not surrender to the temptation of living with your children or grand children (if you have a financial choice, that is). Sure, being surrounded by family sounds great, but we all need our privacy. They need theirs and you need yours. Even then, do so only if you feel you really need the help or do not want to live by yourself Don't abandon your hobbies. If you don't have any, make new ones. You can travel, hike, cook, read, dance. You can adopt a cat or a dog, grow a kitchen garden, play cards, checkers, chess, dominoes, golf. Try to go. Get out of the house, meet people you haven't seen in a while, experience something new (or something old). The important thing is to leave the house from time to time. Go to museums, go walk through a park. Get out there. Speak in courteous tones and try not to complain or criticize too much unless you really need to. Try to accept situations as they are. Pains and discomfort go hand in hand with getting older. Try not to dwell on them but accept them as a part of the life. If you've been offended by someone – forgive them. And, If you've offended someone - apologise. Don't drag around resentment with you. It only serves to make you sad and bitter. It doesn't matter who was right. Someone once said: "Holding a grudge is like taking poison and expecting the other person to die." Don't take that poison. Forgive, forget and move on with your life. Laugh. Laugh away your worries Remember, you are one of the lucky ones. You managed to have a life, a long one. Many never get to this age, never get to experience a full life. Contributed: Chris Bird

Vero International Festival of Motoring Most of you will know that the Vero Festival of Historic Motoring will now be held in 2022. The dates are Jan 16 to 21st 2022 The organising Committee has sent out to all VCC members by email a request for your expression of interest. . PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU RESPOND to this if you are considering going. Events like this have significant budgets to manage and some of you will recall the last International Rally suffered significant losses. Whatever your view on that result, learnings have been taken and you will have read in the latest Beaded Wheels that the Management Committee will NOT accept the event running at a loss. To that effect they are looking for some surety that entrant numbers will be sufficient to make the event viable. It will not be a firm commitment and I do urge you to respond. If there is insufficient interest, there is a possibility the event won’t go ahead. This is an event not to miss, a shorter period than previous International Rallies, in an area with some great motoring and the time of year hopefully means plenty of sunshine. So, get your mates together, decide what vehicle you’re taking and plan to be there.

Should nobody have a need for her, any suitable parts Mac and Chris want will be removed and everything else will be returned to the Shed Boys to convert into suitable spares for sale.
