Chairman’s Report At our last committee meeting there was some lengthy discussion on four main issues. First one being the chairs for the red an room which prices were obtained a year ago and for reason was put to one side, so this has found its way to the top of the pile again. We will have to get another quote, but expect the price to be a little higher. The second one while the museum is empty “get the floor repainted”, quotes have been got and it is plain to see that some people don’t want to do it. Prices range from $4,500 to $9,000. This will be done as soon as, looks like it could be the week of 18th of March. Thank you to those of you who are looking after club vehicles. The third one is the purchase of a 20ft container for $4,000 comes with new floor, painted and ventilation plus $300 for delivery which we maybe able to handle by other means. This container plan has been tabled by two or three of us looking at where to store the BBQ - as at the moment its in the way of the boys down in the parts department. And with the motorcycle boys talking of a dual trailer being purchased they will need somewhere to store it and if there’s enough room the old chairs from the Redman room may fit in as well. The plan for just where it will go is still to be made, but somewhere where we can get at it from both ends. Other concerns are the grounds and painting outside club rooms. Would like to think we could get a good deal of this done before the AGM in May. May I thank Kath and Kevin for their effort in organising the overnight trip to Kaikoura. Members are encouraged to come forward with ideas for outings, I dear get you all to think about this. One other concern is club vehicles available for club members. We are at present reviewing conditions and drawing up rules etc, please don’t be alarmed as we feel that one or two things have been a bit loose and need tidying up. As at the last meeting five new members have joined us so please make them welcome. Lastly may I take this opportunity to thank Trevor, Glen, Paula, Carol, Phil, Ziggy, Ed and David for their outstanding effort in organising a most successful National Motorcycle Rally and also the other 40 or so members that helped on the said weekend. You have done the branch proud and with everyone happy and also with a small profit. Well done.

Club Captain’s Report The Motorbike Rally was the event of the month! What an amazing amount of bikes and heaps of cool riders. The Motorbike section have to be congratulated on a very well run event with around 190 entries. It was good to see the car and motorbike sections of the club, working as one, which is something that should be encouraged. I was lucky to be a backup to the bikes that travelled to Hammer. It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. The motorcyclist take on life is enjoyable. The bigger events coming up are the overnight trip to Kaikoura. For this you need to register by 13th March. The Air Show. You need to email Pat Pascoe to take along your vintage see the full notice under Branch Notices Page 3. And the trip to Durville Island (Apr 28th) Theres a name list in Clubrooms.

Update from Your Social Convenor Hi Everyone, What a busy month February was, after Heritage day we had a few days to relax and then the National Motor Cycle Rally. It was wonderful to see so many bikes in the town (approx:185). We had a busy three days in the kitchen. Friday was registration day so the tea and coffee was very welcome for those that registered and then nattered to friends from afar. Saturday and Sunday again the kitchen was busy. They tell us it can be quite thirsty riding some of these old bikes. Sadly on Saturday 16th one of our members passed away, Dulcie Mant-Old. Dulcie was a very active member in the kitchen, a great scone maker and would always put her hand up to help with any function we had. Her smiling face will be sadly missed. We held a memorial service for Dulcie at the park on Thursday 21st. Which was well attended by members, family and friends. Rest in Peace Dulcie Our Natter & Noggin is Friday the 29th March it is Ham Steak and Salad $10pp with a Pot Luck Dessert. Look forward to seeing you there! Cheers from the Kitchen - Dale 5
Secretary’s Scribblings Another month has gone by and boy, didn’t the National Motorcycle Rally go off with a bang. A huge thanks to Trevor Harris, Glen and Paula Harris, Carol and Phil Taylor, Russel Lane, Ed Matkin and David Bool for all their hard work over three years prior to the rally, and especially in the weeks leading up to, and sorting out everything since the rally. This group was a Subcommittee of our Branch Committee who organised this event on behalf of the National organisation. As Trevor said at our Monthly meeting though, it needs to be pointed out to National Office that the expectations of organising events like this are over the top. The majority of members are of an advancing age and coping with organising an event of this size is a huge commitment. At least two on the committee took weeks of work and being self-employed, they went without any income for this period. Also, it was very disappointing to the committee that the National President did not attend this event and neither did the South Island Club Captain, even though it was organised on the Presidents behalf. This needs to be conveyed to the National Management Committee and Executive. .
From our monthly Committee meeting: The committee have recently had the fire extinguishers in the Club rooms and parts sheds up graded and will now be checked annually. 6
Some of the trees and vegetation around our area will be trimmed soon, as they have become overgrown, and especially behind the parts sheds could be a fire risk. Financially the Branch is in very good heart, with a great bank balance, but the committee has earmarked some of this for some R and M with quotes for tidying up in the Museum with repainting floors and walls. We are looking at replacing or upgrading the chairs in the Redman room as well. As he would have also reported, Club Captain Bob has as always, some good runs and places to visit organised. Make sure you get your name down on the list in the Redman room or contact Bob direct. The kitchen has been as busy as always, with Heritage Day, the Motorcycle rally and Dulcie Mant-old memorial service being catered for. Many thanks to all those who provided food for these events and those who helped out in the kitchen. Coming up there are more catering events which Dale has in hand. Dale would appreciate some extra hands with the catering, even though there is a great group who do this now, if you would like to help give Dale a call on Ph. 578 4322. A set of rules is being drawn up on usage of Branch vehicles. The rules will clearly state how the vehicle will be used and the responsibility of the person using the vehicle.
I have from National Office a copy of all branch members, their addresses, phone numbers and the vehicles they own. If any member would like a copy, I can email a copy to you. These are rather large lists so email would be better rather than printing. I also have a copy of ALL members throughout the country so if anyone would like this it can be emailed, but not copied as this one is something like 450 pages. Our Branch Annual General Meeting will be held on Sunday 19 May at 1.30pm in the Redman room. That’s it for this month. This time last month I was supporting my son Alistair when he competed in the Coast to Coast race and now I am in Oxford looking after the farm while his team is competing in Godzone, which is a 5 to 6-day 500 km race, starting and finishing in Akaroa, but could be anywhere in Canterbury. From the Blokes in the Shed‌ Our sincere condolences to Bruce Man-told on the sad passing of his wife Dulcie. Bruce was a great asset to the Sheds during his time and remember Bruce, though you have only recently retired from active duty Bruce, know that you're always welcome at the Sheds anytime! Strewth!! what a month February was, so much happened, what with the Nelson Swap Meet, the National Motor Cycle Rally and all sorts of happening in the shed, all under one of the hottest months on record (I feel). Half a trailer load of our shed stock was taken over to Nelson Swap Meet and I must say I felt as if that Nelsons meet has really come of age. Well organized, more sites, lots of pleasant staff made one feel really welcome. A great day, though the distant smoke made me feel for the food folks in Wakefield. We had a good return financially and an unexpected windfall of some useful spares loaded into our trailer from site holders who "weren't taking this crap home" Some useful model A and Austin 7 stuff, plus magneto stuff for Tiger. All very satisfactory. What a weekend we had at the National Motor Cycle Rally here in Marlborough. Many of the Shed Blokes were marshals and back up crews on the rally. Thanks you bikers for your generous custom in the parts sheds, with many good deals done, all under a clear sunny sky. Hectic, but fun. 8
Later in the month two trailer loads of Morris Minor parts arrived and were well received. Then on top of that another trailer full of very usable Austin seven parts arrived from Picton. So can I say a very sincere thank you to those donors. The container storage shed is almost complete and will be in use soon as much needed covered storage for differentials, half shafts, brake drums and rear axles. New wise man Roger, is caretaker of all things Morris Minor and is beavering away on a dedicated area for these popular parts. Thanks Roger. With the hot dry summer we've had and the fire risk potential round the back of the sheds, committee and shed blokes have put their heads together for a tidy up of rubbish and overhanging tree branches, as soon as we get some rain and things cool down. NATIONAL MOTORCYCLE RALLY AND AFTER RALLY TOUR EPILOGUE The first meeting to form the rally organising committee took place in September 2017, since then the committee has met at least once a month and individual members have had meetings with venue managers, sponsors, district council, advertisers, Marlborough Roads, commercial firms etc etc. It has been a mammoth effort in terms of time, energy, stress and financial cost. We have not done it alone. Behind the rally committee a core of branch members shared responsibility for important aspects of the rally. Marshalling, clubrooms, kitchen, photography, back up vehicles, shuttle buses, signage, aviation and park user liaison, results, the four check point co-ordinators and who ever I have missed. Three partners of rally committee members have given a lot of support during the planning stage and their input immediately prior to and during the event was immense. The number of members who helped out over the weekend also played a vital part and our thanks go to them. Through out it all the support of the branch committee and the members never faltered which was very encouraging when we found the going difficult. Our clubrooms, grounds, hospitality and the museum display received a lot of praise during the rally. Our thanks to those who contributed to the preparation and manning of the facilities and display. To all of you helped in any way or even 10
offered encouragement, thanks, it all helped towards making the event a success and it was a success, attracting in excess of 250 riders and supporters, including a sizable overseas contingent was a success in itself but the big plus was the many positive comments during and after the rally which exceeded the negative comments by about 240 to 10 and even the ten may be a bit exaggerated. Receiving thanks and congratulations from seasoned rally veterans who have been attending and organising National Motorcycle rallies since the mid 1970’s was particularly gratifying. A big question being asked is was the rally a financial success. The bills are still rolling in but we are feeling positive. Another question is will we do it again. Yes, possibly in about 2069 when the youngest entrant in this rally will be seventy. One area of concern for all rally organisers, especially is the possibility of an accident and serious injury. On the occasion the one reported of did not involve injury or major damage which reflects well on our entrants riding and safety skill. We had only one adverse report from a member of the public who reported a fast-dangerous overtaking manoeuvre on the Mahakipawa Hill. Considering we had close on two hundred riders out there we can live with one act of poor judgement.
If there was an award for commitment it would have to go to Auckland member Brian King. Brian set out to ride to Blenheim on his 1952 Matchless. Just out of Auckland an oil slick on the road sent Brian and the Matchless sliding down the highway. Remounting he rode to the nearest hospital, had his injuries attended to and resumed his journey. During the actual rally his gearbox and rear wheel locked up, fortunately as he was travelling slowly. The Matchless was trailered to Brayshaw Park where with the help of friends and local members he removed and repaired the gearbox in time for Sunday’s activities and the after-rally tour. On Wednesday he took a wrong turn somewhere in the sounds and got badly lost in the labyrinth of gravel roads. Perhaps he realised his stars were not in alignment and he decided to give up the Thursday ride to Hanmer in favour of resting up with some of our local members before riding back to Auckland. The effort he put in would have been a credit to any rider. It was more so for Brian, he is in his eighties. Give that man a medal.
Vote on the format of the National Motorcycle Rallies of the Future Entrants in the recent National Motorcycle Rally will have received an email asking you to make your thoughts regarding the timing of our next National Rally known to our Branch Delegate. Are you in favour of our next National Rally being a one day event at the Vero Rally in 2021, followed by a stand-alone event in three years time or do you wish to stay with the current format of a National Motorcycle Rally every two years which is the current format.

Have you ever been guilty of looking at others your own age, and thinking, surely, I can’t look that old? Well you will love this one…… Jill was sitting in the waiting room at a new dentist when she noticed his name on the practitioner certificate on the wall...it showed his full name and she remembered a tall dark handsome boy she had gone to school with! When she entered the surgery, however, it wasn't him. The new dentist was bald, stooped, and with a deeply lined face. He was also far too old to have been her classmate. Once the examination was over however, Jill always been nosey decided to ask him if he had gone to the high school she had and in what year. Yes, they had been at the same school and both had graduated in the same year! Jill was now so excited she blurted out “You were in my class!!” He peered at Jill closely then the ugly, bald, decrepit, old B..... said
A woman awakes during the night to find that her husband was not in their bed. She puts on her dressing gown and goes downstairs to look for him. She finds him sitting at the kitchen table with a hot cup of coffee in front of him. He appears to be in deep thought, just staring at the wall. She watches as he wipes a tear from his eye and takes a sip of his coffee. 'What's the matter, dear?' she whispers as she steps into the room, 'Why are you down here at this time of night?' The husband looks up from his coffee, 'I am just remembering when we first met 20 years ago and started dating. You were only 16. Do you remember back then?' he says solemnly. The wife is touched to tears thinking that her husband is so caring, so 'what subject did you teach me Jill?' sensitive. 'Yes, I do' she replies. The husband pauses. The words were JOKES Sent in by Chris Bird not coming easily.. 'Do you remember when your father caught us in the back seat of my car?' 'Yes, I remember!' said the wife, lowering herself into a chair beside him. The husband continues. 'Do you remember when he shoved the shotgun in my face and said, 'Either you marry my daughter, or I will send you to jail for 20 years?' 'I remember that too' she replies softly. He wipes another tear from his cheek and says… 'I would have been released today. '

A reminder that one word in the English language that can be a noun, verb, adjective, adverb and preposition.
UP
Read until the end ... you'll laugh. This two-letter word in English has more meanings than any other two-letter word, that word is 'UP.' It is listed in the dictionary as an [adv.], [prep.], [adj.], [n], [v]. It's easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP? At a meeting, why does a topic come UP? Why do we speak UP, and why are the officers UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report? We call UP our friends, brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver, warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house and fix UP the old car. At other times, this little word has real special meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite and think UP excuses. To be dressed is one thing but to be dressed UP is special. And this UP is confusing: A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP. We open UP a store in the morning, but we close it UP at night. We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP! To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP, look UP the word UP in the dictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost 1/4 of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions. If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used. It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don't give UP, you may wind UP with a hundred or more. When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP. When the sun comes out, we say it is clearing UP. When it rains, the earth soaks it UP. When it does not rain for a while, things dry UP. One could go on and on, but I'll wrap it UP, for now . . . my time is UP! Oh . . . one more thing: What is the first thing you do in the morning and the last thing you do at night? U P ‌. Did that one crack you UP? Now I'll just shut UP!
