Chairman’s Report Let me take this opportunity to welcome the new members to our branch, I find it wonderful that one these is a 10yr old lass. Please make yourselves known and join in our activities. You will be aware of the management of the National Club Committee wanting to change the Club Logo. We at branch level need to hear from you members how you would like your branch delegates to the National AGM to vote. At present Chris is planning to put up an alternative for us to look at. We at committee level also believe the club should look at a name change which Chris will also put to this branch, please don’t be frightened to have your say.

The replanting of the trees is at selection stage, we want to plant trees that won’t make to much mess and don’t grow to big. Good to see you putting your names down on the list for our midwinter dinner and prize giving. Over the next 6 to 7 weeks or so Janice and I won’t be on deck, Rob Galaway will step into the chair, any of committee will help with your inquiries. When it comes to Daffodil Day Rob and the committee will need some help to man the gates and all the things that are needed to be done on the day, please help if you can. In the next viewpoint mag Rob and Chris will have times etc for you all. Let’s make this another successful day for our local Cancer Society and our branch. Dale and the ladies will need some help in the kitchen as usual and will need some baking.

Club Captain’s Report The visit to the Dudson Scott Gallery was well attended and after a look through the gallery and Joannas’ workroom where these amazing paintings are created, we moved outside to look at Rays’ cars and projects. A short drive to the Vines Village for lunch was an enjoyable end to the morning. It was decided to postpone the Events trial until warmer times so perhaps combine this with a picnic run? The night trial and noggin and natter saw twenty-three competitors brave the winter evening. Rob Galloway made this an old school event with lots to look for in the dark. On arrival back at the Clubrooms hot soup and buns were on the menu. A great night had by all.

Secretary’s Scribblings It is great to see members out and about in their cars on runs organised by Club Captain, Kath, during the depths of winter. We are past the shortest day and the days are beginning to lengthen again, and the temperatures will warm up soon. Where I live, we have had some very hard frosts, and quite a bit of fog in the valley so it makes it difficult to get motivated and get out and about when it is much easier to sit inside near a nice warm fire and temperatures in the 20’s. From our committee meeting on Wednesday. Our Branch is in very good heart with 10 applications for new membership over the past month. This shows that we must be doing something right. Our grounds Committee are looking at types of trees which will be suitable for replacement for the trees we have removed lately. The District Council want an input in this and will pay half the costs of replacements. The large Cedrus Deodar tree will be removed as this has become dangerous with very large branches overhanging the Clubrooms, the road and Patchetts Green. Unfortunately, in its earlier days it has had its top broken out and is quite ugly, whereas if it had one leader it would be a magnificent specimen. Daffodil Day is coming up on the 22 nd of August. After this was cancelled last year because of Covid 19 lets all support this very worthy cause and raise much

needed funds for the local Branch of the Cancer Society. Please bring your vehicles along to display, for the small donation of $5 per vehicle, and let all your friends and family know about this so they come along for a gold coin donation to look at the display. The Clubs National Management Committee have been working on a replacement Logo for the badge our Club has had for 75 years. There was much discussion at the committee meeting and our Morning teas over the past 2 weeks where 60 to 70 members attend, about the proposed change. Some members said it should remain as it is and were not happy about the change for changes sake, and why did the Club want to change. Comment was also made that the change did not go far enough, and the Club needs a change of name, as there are not many members who drive Vintage cars and bikes now. The majority of new members are driving 1960’s 70’s and 80’s vehicles, and don’t know what a vintage or veteran car is. This committee agreed that we look at a name change to “The Heritage Motoring Club of New Zealand”, or maybe Heritage Motoring New Zealand. Also discussed what the Logo needed to look like, and the consensus was it need to contain a wheel. The secretary is to work with a designer to look at having a wheel with 4 quadrants each having a different type of wheel from Veteran wooden spokes, Vintage steel spokes, PV or PW wheel and a 1980s wheel. Thanks go to Linda Laing for the work she has done for the design but because she does not have the relevant software, we need to look elsewhere. If there is any member with this experience, please get in touch. The committee felt that if we vote against the management Committee proposal there needs to be a viable alternative to offer. A comment had been made by a younger member that as we have our meetings on a Wednesday morning, this precluded those members still working from attending. The suggestion maybe we could have an evening meeting for these members. It was pointed out that we have a monthly Noggin and Natter on the last Friday evening of the Month with usually a meal and sometimes a speaker or movie of some type. All members are invited to these, and more younger members along with their families would be most welcome to attend. This month we are having a quiz evening so get teams of 4 together and enter. To change the logo or not to change the logo, that is the question... OR

DEADLINE FOR Feedback from the branch is to the Executive meeting on 13 August 2021. Hi everyone, At our last 2 Wednesday morning teas and at our Committee meeting we have had some robust discussion about the proposed change. Many felt this does not go far enough and just by changing the Logo will not encourage younger car enthusiasts to join. The committee have come up with an idea that we need to change the name of our Club and remove the word vintage, as most of the people joining the club now are bringing along 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s cars and bikes. We propose that the name be changed to “The Heritage Motoring Club of New Zealand” or a suggestion from one correspondent is to take the word Club out so we become “Heritage Motoring New Zealand”, and we are doing some work on a different logo to show this. I know there will be older members against any change but we need to look forward to the people in the future who will join our great organisation. At the AGM in Greymouth in August 2019 the proposition was put to the members attending that the Club should be updating its brand and image They agreed and gave the Management Committee approval to investigate and develop an initial concept for a new logo They also agreed that while the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand would always be our official name, the focus of the new logo would be ‘VCC’

The first step was to think about a tagline or slogan

What is a slogan or tagline? • •

Tagline or slogans tell people what we do … "Just Do It," "Try Harder," "Drive Happy.”

They need to be short and simple, memorable and easy to say.

Our Slogan must have key words that reflect the Club Who we are What we do Where we are going

Those four bullet points were given to a designer who came up with various design options. Following a presentation to the March Executive Meeting, the Management Committee is now recommending the following design ………

BRRRRR Jack frost is about, takes a bit longer to get your nose above the covers, but it is nice to see the sun. June was a very quite month. our natter & noggin postponed to the 2nd July which also included the night trial. Although it was a bit cold everybody that participated enjoyed themselves, and the soup and bun helped to warm them up. Our July natter & noggin is on Friday the 30th and it is a quiz night with Bangers and mash meal $10.00pp Don't forget the Prize giving Dinner at the Clubs of Marlborough on the 25th July at 12.30pm in the Taylor room. If you haven't got your name down and you can't get to the club to put it on the list. Please ring me on 021 0265 7507 On Sunday the 1st August I have arranged a card making afternoon for the ladies, at a cost of $5.00 pp. Afternoon tea will be supplied. If you would like to attend also give me a ring. Keep warm, Dale and all the helpers in the kitchen

From the Blokes in the Shed… At present our thoughts and good wishes are with ‘ Arfa’, one of Tigers disciples in the electrical shed who has had surgery in Christchurch, we all wish you a speedy recovery ‘Arfa’. Gary and Dexter have undertaken the long overdue task of sorting the gasket sets which will receive a modification to the rack for ease of access. George is doing an outstanding job of sorting and cataloging the new old stock bearings and seals whilst John S and Red have not yet seen the light at the end of the tunnel in their quest to sort our vast range of nuts and bolts. Several members have made use of our valve grinding machine which is there for all members use along with other workshop equipment, just see Bruce to make the arrangement. The 1948 Humber 10 has been recovered from The Omaka Aviation Centre who had no further use for it and is currently being parted out. The International C1 truck project is still available including two engines, front and rear axles, wheels , new tyres ( tyres optional) and some body panels.

COMMUNITY BUS PROPOSAL Consideration is being given to organise a community bus with wheel chair facilities to enable members who do not have a drivers licence or are mobility challenged to enable them to join the VCC Wednesday morning smokos.

Motorcycle Report Due to the rubbish weather the combined run with Nelson was cancelled and will be rescheduled for a later date and due to no write up this month one of our members has kindly done an article on one of his bikes for us.

Motorcycle Calendar Sunday 18th July Leave the park at earlier time of 10am for the annual garage run. Sunday 15th August Leave the park at 11am for ride to the Wairau Valley Tavern.

Catching a Disease.. Go back forty years. “Want an NSU?” says Bruce. “Nope” says I, “ Why?” “Ted says there is one for sale in Kaikoura. $250 bucks” Bruce replies. I happened to be looking for an old bike at the time and so was in a very vulnerable position. I had a Triumph Tigress scooter which was not particularly fun to ride owing to a propensity to drag large portions of its undercarriage on the ground at any sign of spirited pilotage. It had occurred to me this was probably dangerous. So something with larger wheels had a definite attraction. But an NSU? What on earth was that? Actually I had a rough idea. German, 250cc as were most German bikes of the time and weird looking probably. As it turned out I was right on all counts. “It can't do any harm just to have a look Brucey” I said later “though there is no way I'd buy it”. “Right Ho” said Bruce “I'll pick you up at a time to be arranged.” And so it was that on the appointed day Bruce picked me up in a NZ Railways vehicle and we proceeded to Kaikoura. Perhaps at this time I should clear up a point. Bruce was not abusing his employment contract by using the ute because (a) back then there were no employment contracts and (b) back then WE owned the railway, you, me, everybody so we were using OUR ute (and yours and everybody else’s ute.) There. I'm glad that's cleared up. So on to Kaikoura and a cup of tea with Ted while he gave us a run down on proceedings.

According to Ted the bike belonged to a gentleman known universally as The Captain. The Captain was a longstanding client of the Adelphi Hotel and was what was called in those days “ a character.” He had had the bike for as long as anyone could remember and did ride it occasionally to the pub where he would tell all and sundry about its blistering performance. Ted warned us not to be too alarmed at The Captains unusual personality and so we proceeded to a nondescript house where The Captain resided with his landlady. A knock on the door produced the landlady who summoned The Captain. The Captain appeared, a short man of width with an aggessive, arms straight down and out from his sides stance. His face was a light magenta colour darkening down to a deep indigo-violet at the nose. Buried in there somewhere were two little blue eyes staring at us. “Does 140!” he bawled at us with no further explanation. Bruce took a step back, I wasn't about to challenge him and Ted looked unconcerned. Ted who patronised the Adelphi knew him casually and explained that we had heard the bike was for sale and that we would like to look at it. “140!” bawled The Captain again and waddled off and we followed. In a recess between the house and a shed was a motorcycle. A moment here to describe it is warranted. In one word, APPALLING. Starting at the front the speedometer in the headlight had been smashed in with I suspect, a ball peen hammer (Ted said The Captain had a bad temper) and the headlight insert was a foreign item held in with a coil of garden hose. Both handlebar lever blades were broken off and repaired with rolled up copper cut off a piece of spouting and gutter bolted on. A piece of garden hose left over from the headlight was then pushed over this to protect the pinkies. The tank was dented but appeared salvagable. The seat had a covering of some type of waterproof material held on around the bottom with clothes pegs and served as a mount for a pair of the most unsavoury pannier bags of peeling leatherette. A muffler of unknown type was held on with baling wire and a trailer tail light completed the machines equipment. The whole crime scene was covered in a hand brushed coat of thick black paint, or should I say roughcast. To this was added gold striping applied with a half inch brush complete with a fancy design on the front mudguard in the American pinstriping fashion but thicker. Much thicker. For a moment Bruce and I stood there in stunned silence. “Does it go?” queried Bruce. “Does 140!” bawled The Captain again to reinforce his point. He then fiddled with something at the side of the machine, turned on the petrol on. and proceeded to swing a chubby little leg across the seat. Feeling for the kick start he gave it a inquisitive nudge or two and then kicked it. Nothing happened. This called for a repeat performance, and another and another. A light sheen of moisture appeared on his brow and upper lip. The magenta hue darkened slightly. ”Battery! He yelled and dismounted and disappeared into the shed to emerge with a huge welder come battery charger and an extension cord. He threaded this this through the kitchen window of the house and the land lady took care of the connection inside. The Captain proceeded with the more

technical side of things outside. Delving into one of the panniers with the battery charger wires he fiddled about then stood back with an air of satisfaction. “Turn the power on mother!” he hollered and mother was obviously on the case because a small plume of smoke emanated from the pannier bag. The Captain resumed his station at the kickstart and continued his routine of nudge a little then kick, nudge a little then kick. Five minutes of this and his face attained all the hues of a West Coast sunset. It was fairly clear we were all wasting our time and it was not going to go. And suddenly it caught! From zero to full throttle it went in a blast of noise from the dubious muffler until The Captain relented with his throttle hand. It was most definitely internally combusting complete with large amounts of smoke and noise. Gradually the engine died down from haemorraging level to an idle and believe it or not it didn't sound too bad. “Does 140!” The Captain bawled triumphantly. For a moment we stood there in silence. Did I want this? This was not the classic bike I was thinking of. Where would you start to do it up. Could you stroll down to your friendly NSU dealer for parts? I think not. Was it all there? What does NSU mean anyway? But then again $250 was not a great sum and it did function albeit with a lot of pyrotechnics and it definitely was a curiosity in the same vein as a large facial wart. Bruce, Ted and I had a short conference and came up with the answer “We'll let you know if we want it.” At the time there was not a queue of buyers fighting over it nor was there ever likely to be. Then the three of us retired to the Adelphi to discuss the days activities. Somewhere along the way I succumbed to the mechanation’s of my evil companions and made arrangements to send Ted $250 and pick up the wreck Bruce and I then drove home, me silent and Bruce in fits of laughter. Later in the week I sent Ted $250 in an envelope appropriately stamped and addressed and dropped it in the mail. No internet banking here! Regretting my foolishness I sat back and awaited developments which were not long in coming. The phone rang and Bruce informed me that the Captain had not being paying his board, the landlady had foreclosed on the motorbike and it was no longer for sale. I was off the hook. A feeling of relief swept over me and I sat back and idly flicked through the Triumph ads in an old magazine. Life was good. A year or so went by and the phone rang with news from Ted. The Captain had cast off for the last time, shoved off into the sunset, been given the deep six, his landlady had repelled boarders and was inquiring if I would still like to purchase the motorcycle but at an increased price of $450. Not in a completely sound mind I sent Ted $450. Why ? - I don't know. Strange things happen. A week later noises in the driveway roused me from the couch and investigations led me to a green NZR ute reversed into the driveway with a grisly cargo. Bruce and I got it off and then the ute disappeared to the sound of muffled laughter and I was left alone with my folly.

Nurse Mariann appeared at the back door. “What's that” she barked. “That is an NSU” I replied. ”Does 140.” “NSU stands for NON SPECIFIC URETHRITIS” replied Nurse Mariann “ a common venereal complaint caused by amongst other things, poor sexual hygiene.” It suddenly dawned on me, I had caught a disease. Does 140.

Vero International Festival of Motoring Most of you will know that the Vero Festival of Historic Motoring will now be held in 2022. The dates are Jan 16 to 21st 2022 The organising Committee has sent out to all VCC members by email a request for your expression of interest. . PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU RESPOND to this if you are considering going. Events like this have significant budgets to manage and some of you will recall the last International Rally suffered significant losses. Whatever your view on that result, learnings have been taken and you will have read in the latest Beaded Wheels that the Management Committee will NOT accept the event running at a loss. To that effect they are looking for some surety that entrant numbers will be sufficient to make the event viable. It will not be a firm commitment and I do urge you to respond. If there is insufficient interest, there is a possibility the event won’t go ahead. This is an event not to miss, a shorter period than previous International Rallies, in an area with some great motoring and the time of year hopefully means plenty of sunshine. So, get your mates together, decide what vehicle you’re taking and plan to be there.
