Chairman’s Report Firstly let me bid you all a very happy new year. Thank you to those of you who made your cars available for the train visit both in Picton and Blenheim. Those of you who went on the train to Seddon it was a great four hours well spent. It was a fine day with just a little cool breeze. I must take this opportunity to thank John and Ross for their time they have spent putting this together and I can’t forget Stu Johnson for his traffic control. We would have had to walk a bit further if he hadn’t used his thirty-five odd years of skill. He even had to tell the boss why ( I don’t mean me). Your committee has signed off on three projects, being the electrical shed, a container and the new shed. This will help the guys in the spares and give us some much needed storage and hopefully make it easier for everyone.
It seems we’re going to start the year off how we finished last year, so we look forward to a busy two or three months. Keep your eyes on coming events good outings coming up.

Club Captain’s Report Here we are into the new year already and things ticking along pretty well. December saw a couple of well attended events one to Geoff Buick’s farm in the Ure Valley which was originally planned for the 15 th but was canned due weather and was held the next week , I was expecting a reduced turn out of eight to ten cars as it was close to Christmas but it was the opposite we had twenty seven cars turn up along with our own police car though I am not sure if it was fully equipped with a ticket book. Even so the traffic behavior was very good. A good run was enjoyed by all, Thank you Geoff. The end of year BBQ was held here under the trees on a fairly hot day and again I heard no complaints from the thirty or so who attended. The date held after Christmas I think is a good one and possibly worth repeating as it avoids the seasonal stress.

By the time you receive this newsletter the BBQ at Don Register’s will have been and gone but we have a request from the harness racing club for a presence at Waterlea for vintage and preferably veteran cars – talk to Kelly if you are interested. Further down the track we are looking at an overnight to Muller Station on the weekend of 28th & 29th March. This trip will be to look at the history of farming in the upper Awatere Valley. I have spoken to Steve Satterwaite the owner of Muller and he was quite positive and has some historical knowledge and he recommended another local with extensive knowledge of the area who I plan to approach. Accommodation will be basic station cookshop style accommodation and I was a bit concerned about catering but Dale says “what problem”. One thing I will need reasonably soon is an expression of interest as accommodation is not unlimited at Muller but if necessary, I can approach their neighbors for overflow who I thing would be pleased to help. Another option is you could make it a day trip in your modern car. ( Two Hours Blenheim to Muller).

Secretary’s Scribblings Well here we are at the beginning of another new year. It is hard to believe that it is 20 years since the start of the new millennium. We are 20% of the way to 2100! The last time we had the 20’s, it was the first decade to have a nickname: “Roaring 20s" or "Jazz Age." It was a decade of prosperity and dissipation, and of jazz bands, bootleggers, raccoon coats, bathtub gin, flappers, flagpole sitters, bootleggers, and marathon dancers. Where will the next 10 years take us? I hope you all had a great Christmas and New Year celebration what ever way you spent this time and are fit and raring to go into a new year of vintage motoring.

We had our first Committee Meeting on Wednesday 8 th January. From that meeting one of the main things coming up is Heritage Day, on 6 th February. Please bring your cars or motorcycles along for the day to show off to the public. There will be judging of the best Concourse vehicle on the day, as well and a popular vote for the vehicle the public think is their choice. The Kitchen will be in operation again serving cups of tea and coffee along with sandwiches and home-made cakes and goodies, so if you can, please provide something to be sold on the day. The BBQ will be in operation providing Bacon and Egg butties. Your committee has decided to go ahead with the building of a new garage to store the Motorcycle trailer and the BBQ trailer. Funding will be applied for from a couple of sources to help with this project. It was also decided to go ahead with the refurbishment of the Electrical Shed. For this to happen there will be a 40 ft container purchased to go into the compound to store the parts from that shed while the rebuild is under way. It is the Marlborough Branch turn to run the Biennial Rally this year in October. Jim Mclean and I have been tasked to organise this. If there are any suggestions out there, please make these known to Jim or me. As will be mentioned elsewhere, we have been requested by the Blenheim Racing clubs to display some Veteran and Vintage vehicles on a couple of their race days to help them celebrate their Centenary. The first of these is Sunday 19 th January. If you are available, please let the committee know or put your name down on the sheet in the clubrooms. The second day is in April, the 26th so a few months down the track. Cars are still required for display on the days the Steam train brings overseas Cruise ship passengers from Picton to Blenheim. Please consider this and let us know when you are available

A Catholic Dilemma Every Friday night after work, Bubba would fire up his outside BBQ and cook venison steak. But all of Bubba’s neighbours were Catholic and since it was lent they were forbidden from eating red meat on a Friday. The delicious aroma from the grilled venison steaks were causing such a problem for the catholic faithful that they finally talked to their priest. The priest came and visited Bubba and suggested be become catholic. After several classes and much study Bubba attended mass. The priest sprinkled holy water over him and said ”you were born a Baptist and raised a Baptist but now you are a Catholic.” Bubba’s neighbours were relived until Friday night and the aroma of grilled venison filled the neighbourhood. The priest was called immediately. As the priest rushed into Bubba’s yard clutching a rosary and prepared to scold him, he stopped and watched in amazement.
There stood Bubba, clutching a small bottle of holy water which he was sprinkling carefully over the grilling meat while chanting “ you wuz born a deer, you wuz raised a deer, but now you are a catfish” Contributed by Chris Bird

Update from Your
Kitchen Custodian Well another year has passed us by and I hope everyone had an enjoyable time over the Christmas/New Year break with family and friends. December was reasonably quite with only three Christmas functions booked in. The Awatere Garden club for a luncheon, Baden Powell group for a dinner and the Ashburton VCC for a dinner. 2019 has been a reasonably busy year for the kitchen. Again I would like to thank all those ladies that have helped during the year. These functions help with the fundraising for the club. Friday 31st January is Natter & noggin night which is a "POT LUCK". Thursday February 6th, (Waitangi Day) is our Heritage Day we are again asking for your kind help with donations of baking and also help in the kitchen if anyone can spare an hour. This would be much appreciated, just give me a ring on M: 021 0265 7507 . I will be at the park on Wednesday 5th in the afternoon from 1.30pm -- 4pm if anyone wishes to drop baking off.

MOTORCYCLE REPORT The third weekend in December was a busy one for our motorcycle section members. It started with eight members riding to Ross for the Positive Earth rally, the rally name was explained in our last newsletter but some confusion still exists. I will offer some more clarification. Batteries have a positive and a negative terminal. Unlike most other motorcycle manufacturers, the British used the positive terminal as the negative which of course meant the negative become the positive. That may seem a bit negative but we should remain positive and remember a large amount of British auto electrics were influenced by Joseph Lucas, a.k.a. The Prince of Darkness. That was a negative in itself in many people’s opinion. A positive on the rally was that it was enjoyable aided by the fact there was no incidents caused by riders or machines. That is a positive outcome, well done. Phil rode his new acquisition to the rally and had a trouble free run there and back as well as picking up 2 nd place in the concours. On Saturday some of our section members joined the Ulysses members on their annual Christmas toy ride to provide presents for disadvantaged children. Another well done to those members who fronted for a good cause. On Sunday seven of our riders went on a short ride prior to our Christmas pot luck lunch. Four wives, one daughter and two members not riding on the day added to the number for lunch. Ben had the distinction of riding 3 vehicles for the day starting out on the Kawasaki GPZ, arriving for lunch on the C90 and then proceeded to mow the club lawns on the ride on mower, it was remarked he may get home quicker on the ride on mower that the C90. At least 12 of our local section members attended the Nelson Classis and Vintage Motorcycle Clubs swap meet and display in January. Several of our group rode VCC eligible machines to the event. Purchases and sales were not made in great quantities but some good pickings were available to the right buyer. The display as usual was excellent and well worth the trip.

We extend our condolences to Ron Hebberd and Dave Bishell who recently had brothers pass away. We also wish speedy recoveries to Barbara Johnson and Dot Bishell following recent spells in hospital. Hopefully everyone had a good Christmas and all the best for 2020.

Oxford University researchers have discovered the densest element yet known to science. The new element, Governmentium (symbol=Gv), has one neutron, 25 assistant neutrons, 88 deputy neutrons and 198 assistant deputy neutrons, giving it an atomic mass of 312. These 312 particles are held together by forces called morons, which are surrounded by vast quantities of lepton-like particles called pillocks. Since Governmentium has no electrons, it is inert. However, it can be detected, because it impedes every reaction with which it comes into contact. A tiny amount of Governmentium can cause a reaction that would normally take less than a second, to take from 4 days to 4 years to complete. Governmentium has a normal half-life of 2 to 6 years. It does not decay, but instead undergoes a reorganisation in which a portion of the assistant neutrons and deputy neutrons exchange places. In fact, Governmentium’s mass will actually increase over time, since each reorganisation will cause more morons to become neutrons, forming isodopes. This characteristic of moron promotion leads some scientists to believe that Governmentium is formed whenever morons reach a critical concentration. This hypothetical quantity is referred to as a critical morass. When catalysed with money, Governmentium becomes Administratium (symbol=Ad), an element that radiates just as much energy as Governmentium, since it has half as many pillocks but twice as many morons. NELSON SWAP MEET, BAZAAR 22nd FEBRUARY 2020 The Nelson Vintage Car Club will be holding its Annual Swap Meet at the Nelson Speedway grounds, Lower Queen Street, Richmond on Saturday 22nd February. This event is growing rapidly, with increased support from around New Zealand, so get your site organised, dig out the old car, bike, and truck parts, as someone may be looking for them and be happy to pay a good price. Other second-hand goods and memorabilia are acceptable. A 6m x 6m Sale Site is $15. Complete vehicles can be included for sale on the day at $10, for a car-sale site. Both these include one person admission. Free public car parking will be available on site, and public entry to the sales area will be $5 per person with accompanied children free. A range of food and drink stalls will keep you going throughout the day.

Thursday Feb 6th (Waitangi Day) Annual Brayshaw Park Heritage Day display with VCC cars and motorcycles on show. Our usual good turnout would be appreciated, if you have a restoration project you would like to bring along feel free, arrive at your convenience from 9am onwards.
