Chairman’s Report I would just like to say thank you to all of you who looked after the branch, mowing the lawns, tiding the garden areas, the museum and watering the lawns, while most of us were enjoying a well earned rest. I mentioned to Chris that the chairman’s run maybe an overnight stay in Kaikoura. I have a wee bit more to look at and decide when as most of us have a busy few months in front of us. So hopefully at our February meeting I will be able to lay something on the table. Just a reminder of our Heritage Day on the 6th February, we would like to see you all with your cars and I am sure Dale will be pleased to have some help as usual. Please don’t wait for me to ring you for some help with people to man the gates and parking areas just ring me 5789907, all I need is about 4 people for about an hour or so. Thank you . Club Captain’s Report Another year has whizzed by with some good runs enjoyed by most of us, last month saw a return trip to Buick’s farm at in the Ure Valley with a dozen or so cars and twenty-one people a big thank you to Geoff Buick for making this trip available and also for introducing Rob Peter who turned up in his classic car, some of us then visited his woolshed at Isolation further up the Ure Valley (some got lost and ended up at DJ Buicks place right at the road end). Rob gave us a run down of his operation at Isolation growing extra fine Saxon Merino wool an extremely high quality fibre; where the wool is shorn with blades as was done in the old days before machine shearing was invented, the reason for this is more to do with animal welfare than a desire to revisit ancient practices. To harvest fine wool, it needs to be shorn in July/August and blades leave a longer length of wool and the sheep don’t suffer from bad weather exposure post shearing to the same extent as machine shorn sheep. An old method with a modern take. Later in December the annual barbeque was held here at our place which if everyone enjoyed it as much as I did, we can chalk up another success, great to see so many vintage veteran and classic vehicles here, especially Rose’s 1903 Oldsmobile, seeing that car on an outing always makes my day.

I think there have been some good runs in 2020 despite it being a bit of a tumultuous year with one thing or another but as Club Captain I am running out of ideas and need your help so if you have any ideas for a club run, I would greatly appreciate your input. We have a run to Barnes place at Anakiwa on the 31 st January and please note the departure time is 1000hrs from the clubrooms. Please bring a salad to share, does not have to be elaborate (the supermarkets sell not too bad salads) Remember a barby is meant to simple, easy and stress free) It was advertised at a different time in last months newsletter and the correct time is 1000hrs (ie) a lunchtime event. Heritage day on Saturday 6 th February here at the clubrooms and I believe Kelly has it well in hand. Further down the track there is a trip to Middlehurst Station on the 13 thMarch . this will take the form of a day trip aiming to leave here at 0900hrs with a lunch there and hopefully a couple of speakers to talk about high country farming. I would like an indication of numbers for lunch etc., so please email me or let me know reasonably soon.

Secretary’s Scribblings Here we are, the first Vintage Viewpoint for 2021, and we are into the New Year with a number of events and suchlike for the Club. We had our first Committee Meeting for the year last Wednesday. It was a short meeting as there was not a lot to discuss. From Don, Brayshaw Park Administrators are putting the final touches to the Heritage Day once again being held on Waitangi Day. They have also updated their website, which has been hooked onto the Museum site for better access. There has been a general tidy up of trees around the caretaker’s cottage which has opened it up somewhat to the light. The Museum is in the process of looking to have a sprinkler system installed to combat fire risk. The grounds are looking great with the regressed areas on Patchetts’ Green looking great so thanks to Roger who has organised this to be irrigated over the holiday period. After Heritage Day, we will be pulling out the retaining wall and clearing this area out and rebuilding the wall further away from the building. Bill and Dale have opened the museum over the holidays and have had a good number of people through, especially when the train has been running. For Heritage Day, on the 6 th February, we once again would like as many cars and bikes to display to the public. We will be running a BBQ with Bacon Butties once again so volunteers to help with this would be appreciated. Also needed are a few people to help on the Gate, and car parking for a couple of hours, so please volunteer your time, and don’t leave it to the same old few. Donations of cakes for the kitchen are needed, along with some people to help in the Kitchen. Please contact one of the committee to offer your help with these events. Do not be shy!! Apart from Heritage Day there is a run to Barnes Bach at Anakiwa on the 31 st January and a run to Middlehurst Station on 13 th March. That is it from me. Compliments of the season to everyone and hoping that 2021 is going to be a good year. The weather is certainly living up to its usual Marlborough heat. Well not a lot to report this month, we had a busy couple of weeks in December catering for some Christmas functions, I would like to thank the ladies that helped with these. The comments and appreciation we receive from the groups is very humbling. Our BBQ at Jim McLean’s was very successful and the variety of salads was amazing. Coming up we have our Natter & Noggin Friday 29th Pot Luck. BBQ at Anakiwa Sunday 31st Jan. This is at mid-day, bring a salad The meat will be provided. Don't forget Heritage day Saturday 6th February, we are again asking for donations of baking also helpers in the kitchen would be appreciated even if you could spare an hour. I will be at the club rooms Friday the 5th from 1.30pm if you wish to drop off your baking. Cheers, Dale

MOTORCYCLE REPORT On behalf of all our motorcycle section members we extend condolences to the Taylor and Morresey families who have had recent family bereavements. We had a good turnout for our Christmas lunch at the Woody which was preceded by a ride around the back roads of Hawkesbury. Good to have two lady members riding pillion and at least one more joining us at the Woody. The Christmas ride unfortunately may have been the last ride with us for our youngest member, Ryan has been transferred to a new Bunnings outlet in Frankton. We will miss him but wish him all the best and look forward to seeing him back occasionally. His Honda collection and the Zundap will remain here with Glenn so we may see them out occasionally. Go on Paula have a blast on the 250. Our branch has been donated a 1981 Honda CB 250RS in going condition, rego on hold. Our thanks to Garry Vercoe who has done the negotiations on the gift. Co-incidentally Garry sold the Honda to its first owner back in the days when he ran a motorcycle shop. Bruce M has purchased a 1988 Honda G.B. 400 from the North Canterbury area and was able to use our motorcycle trailer to get it home. We, and Bruce learnt a thing or two about the trailer. Firstly, we have been using it without a rego on outings for the last three months. Secondly, we have been so inflated with pride about getting such a good bargain buying the trailer we overlooked providing a jack and a wheel brace to go with it. Bruce got a puncture didn’t he. Sorry Bruce and thanks for replacing the tyre and for the tie downs. We have since upgraded the address for registration notices and our breakdown accessories. Saturday 6th February is Heritage Day which is the one day we display our vehicles solely for our own financial benefit. In the past our motorcycles have always made up a popular part of the branch display and no doubt will do so again this year. Normally we add some of the motorcycles from the museum display to supplement our line up on Patchett’s Green. The machines in the museum will need a tidy up before Heritage Day so Glenn and I will be going there on Sunday 31st January at 1.30pm to give the museum motorcycles a dust off, pump tyres etc, if anybody else would like to come along and give a hand it would be appreciated, smoko will be provided. Recently we have been contacted by a gentleman in Christchurch who is in the process of restoring the Triumph BSA race bike built by the late Jack Rutledge (if you want the history of this bike and its engine, when exiting the Redman room turn sharp left and its hanging on the wall) while we had assumed it had long since been rendered into bake bean tins or buried in a landfill it has been lucky enough to survive more or less intact. The intent is to rebuild it as it was

raced in Jacks ownership which is being slightly hindered by the fact no one seems to have a photo depicting this, so with it being a long shot if any member who may have been standing taking photos at Hawkesbury or a Waihopai road sprint and did get a photo could you let Glenn or Trevor know. While this may seem like a needle in a haystack challenge of the half a dozen people we have spoken to so far, one believes he may have a photo showing a good proportion of the bike, so with a 1 in 6 strike rate we are not doing too bad so far.

If you do not know where the Waitohi CafĂŠ is, it is by the Railway Station. Last time we were there it was called The Cockle. The time before that it was called The Toot and Whistle. Got It? SUNDAY JANUARY 31 ST Gather at the clubrooms at 1.30 to spruce up the museum motorcycles ready for Heritage Day. Tea or coffee will be available when we have finished or bring your own reviver. SATURDAY FEBRUARY 6 TH Heritage Day motorcycle and car display at Brayshaw Park. Bring your motorcycle pride and joy to the park for the public to admire and remember when they had one like it. Remember we have a trailer if you wish to bring a restoration project or a barn find to add some variety and interest to our display, Further details elsewhere in this newsletter.

27th National Motorcycle Rally Masterton 12th – 14th March, 2021 After Rally Tour 15th – 18th March, 2021 Plans are progressing well for the upcoming National Motor cycle Rally to be held in March 2021. We have had five entrants from New South Wales so we hope that they will be able to make it across the Tasman and join us for the event.

Three great rides have been planned for those who stay on for the after-rally tour. The routes will take the riders to some places for which the Wairarapa is famous with plenty of time to take in the sights, enjoy the country roads and enjoy the local hospitality. We have made the Wednesday of the week a rest and recreation day to enable entrants to have some down time if they wish or visit some of the local attractions.
Does anyone remember a 1920 Davis Phaeton in Marlborough or the Awatere area? Hi. I am a member of the Canterbury VCC. I visited your parts shed in November and was talking to Tris and a couple of other members about my current restoration project a 1920 Davis Phaeton. I mentioned that I thought the car had originated from the Marlborough region and one of the guys thought he remembered one in the Awatere Valley area. Vero International Festival of Motoring Most of you will know that the Vero Festival of Historic Motoring will now be held in 2022. The dates are Jan 16 to 21st 2022 The organising Committee has sent out to all VCC members by email a request for your expression of interest. . PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU RESPOND to this if you are considering going. Events like this have significant budgets to manage and some of you will recall the last International Rally suffered significant losses. Whatever your view on that result, learnings have been taken and you will have read in the latest Beaded Wheels that the Management Committee will NOT accept the event running at a loss. To that effect they are looking for some surety that entrant numbers will be sufficient to make the event viable. It will not be a firm commitment and I do urge you to respond. If there is insufficient interest, there is a possibility the event won’t go ahead. This is an event not to miss, a shorter period than previous International Rallies, in an area with some great motoring and the time of year hopefully means plenty of sunshine. So, get your mates together, decide what vehicle you’re taking and plan to be there.
