Chairman’s Report By the time you get this note our Heritage Day will be over and I thank all members who have contributed to help make this another successful day. For those of you who are travelling to Napier for the Art Deco week have a safe journey and most of all enjoy yourselves. Just like to remind members that we would like to have about twelve or so cars to take about 60 people from our club rooms to the fire station after afternoon tea on the 20th of March at 3pm. Could I please have a list of names and contact details to me 5789907. Let’s do our best for these guys as they do a great job in our community. It is unfortunate that the above is on the same day as the Scenicland Rally which some of us are attending. I would remind people of the Air Show and the Hospice Events. Times and places under coming events in this magazine. Over the next few months some of us will be travelling to and from other activities and are going to be busy. While you are out and about, think about what you would like to do in helping our club in the next year or so as our AGM is coming up fast on the 20th May. Club Captain’s Report The club is back up and running after the Christmas with the first run of the year to Ian and Pat Barnes place at Anakiwa last weekend and though I could not attend it was a good success even though the tide raised the creek and caused some issues with the odd wet foot or two and Kevin apparently lost his footing and slipped over. The funny things that happen when I was not there to see. Heritage day was held at Brayshaw Park on Waitangi day and though the numbers are not in at time of writing it appeared to be up to its usual high standard, with a really good turnout especially from our motor bike division. The numbers through gate seemed to my eye to be down a bit from other years, possibly due to the event at Omaka Airfield, but I may be wrong, however we as a club made a good return on catering and the barby . Many thanks to Dale and her team and those cooking the bacon butties apparently over two hundred were sold.

The next club event is the run to the upper Awatere Valley on 13 th March. This is a rejigged rerun of last March’s run that was cancelled due to COVID-19. It is planned for a 0900hrs departure which should see us there about 1130hrs with a speaker or two lunch etc. and hopefully a look round one or two interesting historical sites. I will keep you informed of details over the next few weeks. The day after Pat Pascoe is organizing a display and would like some vintage cars. If you think you may be able to help have a word with Pat. Another request is the airshow at Omaka at Easter, they are also looking for some display vehicles. If any one has any ideas on future club runs would you please talk to me as I am running out of ideas, after all it is your club runs and I would be grateful of your help.

Secretary’s Scribblings It is hard to believe that we are in to the second month of the year already. The way we are going we will be celebrating Christmas again before we know it. Our branch is certainly up and running again for 2021, with a lot happening. We had our monthly Committee Meeting last Wednesday. The highlight for February will of course be Heritage Day on the 6 th, which will all be over by the time you read this, so a grateful thanks go to those members who displayed vehicles and helped on the day, be it car parking, taking money at the gate, the BBQ, or in the kitchen. The refurbishment of the Electrical shed is ongoing with a new door and window being constructed. There has also been a cat flap installed. If you want to know what that is about, go up there and talk to the chaps in the shed. Thanks to the few motorcycle enthusiasts who have polished up the motorcycles in the Museum. They are looking great. We discussed our policy dealing with the use of the Branch owned vehicles, after the Model A truck was used on a non VCC outing. It has been decided that these vehicles will only be available to members using them on VCC sanctioned events. We also discussed a charge being made for the use of these vehicles, as it costs you, the members about $500 to $700 per year to keep each of these roadworthy, what with Registration, WOF, Insurance and repairs. No decision has been made on this, but we would love to hear your thoughts. Please send me or one of the committee an email or phone call on this. Now and again there have been phone calls to various committee members about dates and times of events. Please read the What’s On page which is always the last page of the Vintage Viewpoint. For those of you who receive this by email, why not print off the last page and put it on your notice board at home so you can easily refer to this throughout the month. The Vero International Rally is being held in New Plymouth in less than a year, January 16th to 21st 2022. If anyone is interested in going please let me know as we may be able to organise a pre rally tour of 4 to 5 days to get to New Plymouth by some less travelled roads. It was pointed out at the meeting that the VCC National Day, Daffodil Day is on again in August. We will probably run a similar event to the past ones and if you have any ideas please let Kelly or me know. Please support the Hospice Vehicle Show on the 14 th March. The theme this year is Ford. The branch has been asked to display the Model T, and other members with Ford cars are asked to put their names down on the sheet in the

Redman room. Of course, all other makes are welcome as well. Along with that, Pat Pascoe also would like a display of cars at the Omaka Air Show at Easter. Please put your name down for this if you are available. The Branch has our AGM on Sunday 30 th May. Please give consideration to stand for the Committee as an election is always a good sign that members are interested in the running of the organisation. That’s it from me. Update from Your Kitchen
Custodian
The first month of the year has passed by very quietly, and not a lot happened in the kitchen Wednesday's are as popular as ever, with between 60 and 80 coming in to have a chat and I guess tell a few stories. Natter & Noggin was another good night with the pot luck dinner. It is amazing that you can have so many different dishes and not very often 2 the same. Last Sunday (31st) was the BBQ at Anakiwa what a great day, weather was nice and warm although I don't think anyone was brave enough to go for a swim. Thank you to Pat & Ian Barnes for inviting us to their bach. Natter & Noggin for February is on Friday 26th and its "Ham steak & salad night" $20.00pp.

MOTORCYCLE REPORT Unfortunately, once again we start our report by expressing our sympathy to the motorcycle section members who have suffered bereavement. Our condolences go to Owen Robinson on the loss of his daughter and Doreen Harris on the loss of her twin sister. We had an excellent turnout, twenty-four for the ride to Picton. Two lady riders and two prospective members were in the total. Several motorcycles were seen for the first time. A 1946 Indian Chief fresh of the restoration bench and being run in ready for the national Indian rally in the North Island, a BSA, A10, a 68 Triumph Trophy, a 56 Harley (or was it out for the second time), and Deb’s brand-new Can Am. Damien took the windy route from Linkwater on the B31 to meet us at Picton and Mac made a guest appearance as well. After lunch we visited a workshop where several high-quality restorations were in progress as well as a trio of Aprila. Our thanks to Stephan for allowing us into his workshop and to John Welch for organising the visit. Thanks to those who fronted up for a long afternoon washing, polishing, pumping, nuggeting and degreasing ten motorcycles and tidying the motorcycle display area. Thanks to Ross Kennington the on-duty museum custodian who pitched in and helped. There was a group of amateur radio enthusiasts who were sitting exams in the Redman room and they were so engrossed, or nervous they did not do justice to a very nice afternoon tea prepared for them. We obviously could not refuse to oblige in helping dispose of the club sandwiches and cake, Thanks Helen of the radio club. Restorations and renovations continue, Phil is delving into the murky pool of wheel building and truing which can result in great satisfaction, unfortunately there is usually a fair amount of eye strain frustration and swearing before that state is reached, good luck. Ben has been chasing down engine and cycle parts for future use in his two Aermacchi bikes, Paul has the gearbox on the ACE out and is having the dogs recut, Glenn’s 1924 Harley cases are being repaired and Zig sourced some shiny engine bits out of the States ready for the bottom end rebuild, the 35 Triumph has rebuilt hubs and welding finished on the guards and Ryan’s 71 Honda now has park lights (thanks Ben) and we won’t divulge till later where the park lights disappeared too, start with due to acute embarrassment.

Motorcycle Calendar Sunday February 21st Leave the clubrooms at 11am for a ride up to a roadside café which is rumoured to sell good burgers and other light lunches. The location is some distance above the Wairau township so on the way home we would be rude not to stop and say “gidday” to our old mate Dave at a venue we have normally used when riding up the valley. Sunday March 21st Some, not sure how many, will have just got home from the National Rally, others who have been on the post rally tour will still be getting home. Mainly for the benefit of those who did not go North we may do a short run or do nothing until the 28th. The third alternative and maybe the best is for those not on the rally to have a day out on the 14 th and take your motorcycle to the hospice fund raising vehicle display. Give us some feedback but PLEASE do not suggest we do all three.
27th National Motorcycle Rally Masterton 12th – 14th March, 2021 After Rally Tour 15 th – 18th March, 2021 Plans are progressing well for the upcoming National Motor cycle Rally to be held in March 2021. We have had five entrants from New South Wales so we hope that they will be able to make it across the Tasman and join us for the event.

Three great rides have been planned for those who stay on for the after-rally tour. The routes will take the riders to some places for which the Wairarapa is famous with plenty of time to take in the sights, enjoy the country roads and enjoy the local hospitality. We have made the Wednesday of the week a rest and recreation day to enable entrants to have some down time if they wish or visit some of the local attractions.

Vero International Festival of Motoring Most of you will know that the Vero Festival of Historic Motoring will now be held in 2022. The dates are Jan 16 to 21st 2022 The organising Committee has sent out to all VCC members by email a request for your expression of interest. . PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU RESPOND to this if you are considering going. Events like this have significant budgets to manage and some of you will recall the last International Rally suffered significant losses. Whatever your view on that result, learnings have been taken and you will have read in the latest Beaded Wheels that the Management Committee will NOT accept the event running at a loss. To that effect they are looking for some surety that entrant numbers will be sufficient to make the event viable. It will not be a firm commitment and I do urge you to respond. If there is insufficient interest, there is a possibility the event won’t go ahead. This is an event not to miss, a shorter period than previous International Rallies, in an area with some great motoring and the time of year hopefully means plenty of sunshine. So, get your mates together, decide what vehicle you’re taking and plan to be there.

Trials Car Mrs. Fergusson aka VCC Trials vehicle
As some of you are aware she was a Vanguard ute presented to the shed for dismantling. It was subsequently obtained by Chris and Mac and modified to enter into the regional VVC Trials competitions. Following 2 years of fearful competition Mac & Chris have decided to withdraw Mrs Fergusson from competitive life or make her available to someone else to provide her a new future either in the Trials or some another life. Should nobody have a need for her, any suitable parts Mac and Chris want will be removed and everything else will be returned to the Shed Boys to convert into suitable spares for sale. Specifications: 1958 Vanguard Ute, Engine: 4 Cyl 2.0 lt. Goes really well, new water pump, new oil filter fitted, fuel pump has had a new kit installed, Manual gearbox. Very reliable and strong engine with an exhaust as an optional extra. Memo to all Car Clubs Rotary Club of Ashburton Plains Classic Car Run 2nd May 2021 You are asked to keep this date free as the Rotary Club of Ashburton Plains are once again organising our annual Classic car run. This event is part of the Ashburton Wheels Week festivities, following the swap meet to be held the previous day. This is the 28th running of this hugely popular event and we ask you for your participation. Entry fee will be $20/car with profits going to a local organisation ( Ashburton Fire Museum.) The event will start from the Ashburton Showgrounds at 10.30am and will finish in Tinwald approximately 2 hours later. Registrations will be from 9.am. You will be given instructions like a car trial, and carry on the designated route to finish. There will be no shingle roads and the instructions will be very straight forward. There will be prizes for various vehicles that will be chosen by our independent judges, Roger Hart and Bernard Egan, two very well known identities in the Mid Canterbury area who have had many years experience of classic cars. We have arranged for light lunches to be available at the venue. Tinwald is situated on the south side of the Ashburton River Bridge. Come and join us for this years Car Rally with the destination being a step back in time with lots to see and do. We ask all Car Clubs to make their members aware of this fun low key event in your club bulletins or notice board.
