Chairman’s Report For the first time in my 75 years I have been told to start looking after myself and with what is happening I have started to listen, also camp mother is breathing down my neck a metre or two behind me. With all this in mind it looks like I won’t be back at the cabinet table after the AGM in May. We have the fortunate luxury of a very capable committee, secretary, treasurer, club captain and now a minute secretary. Committee meetings have been very positive and there’s no reason that they shouldn’t continue to do so. It is with extreme regret that I have made a decision to stand down as your chairman because my health and I will not be very good for some months because of treatment. A big thank you to Chris for taking the meetings these last few months. I am respectfully grateful to all the support that everyone has shown me in my term as your chairman, “ it is quite humbling.” Thank you. I have enjoyed every moment. I informed your committee of my decision at the last committee meeting. Only one thing I ask is that all members look after what we have got. The National Motorcycle Rally. What an excellent job this committee is doing. This will be a great week for the entrants to this event. I wish too on behalf of the Marlborough Branch to most sincerely thank above committee for their dedication to the task. To the members who are going to help Glen, Trevor and their team “thank you.” This will be a very successful event. I for one am very impressed with what I’ve seen so far. The calibre of motorcycles on display is of a very high standard well worth seeing. The richness of this branch is in its members and may it always be that way. VINTAGE MOTORING,

Club Captain’s Report January's run to Ian and Pats Bach at Anakiwa was a pleasant run and a lovely spot in the shade for a picnic. This run will be an annual event to replace the run to the Harris Bach. Thanks to the Harris and Barnes families. Heritage Day has been and gone and although there was not as many public there, we certainly appreciated the cooler weather. Coming up is the Motor Cycle Rally run by the motor bike section, who have put in a tremendous effort. It is good to see some car members supporting them as marshall’s etc. I hope we can continue to assist one another. We wish you luck with the Rally. The free trips on the Marlborough Flyer are popular and it's great to see members and their families taking advantage of them.

26th National Motorcycle Rally Organising Committee It was noted on a farmlands statement a purchase by the committee of 200 Eartag Lazatag Female Large Yellow‌. Now these are very effective identifying sheep, but are our motorcyclists to marked the same way; perhaps left ear for male and right ear for female? This will guarantee to separate our ralliers from any other motorcycle groups in the vicinity. JOKE Sent in by Chris Bird A reminder that one word in the English language that can be a noun, verb, adjective, adverb and preposition.
UP
Read until the end ... you'll laugh. This two-letter word in English has more meanings than any other two-letter word, that word is 'UP.' It is listed in the dictionary as an [adv.], [prep.], [adj.], [n], [v]. It's easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP? At a meeting, why does a topic come UP? Why do we speak UP, and why are the officers UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report? We call UP our friends, brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver, warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house and fix UP the old car. At other times, this little word has real special meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite and think UP excuses. To be dressed is one thing but to be dressed UP is special. And this UP is confusing: A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP. We open UP a store in the morning, but we close it UP at night. We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP! To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP, look UP the word UP in the dictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost 1/4 of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions. If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used. It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don't give UP, you may wind UP with a hundred or more. When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP. When the sun comes out, we say it is clearing UP. When it rains, the earth soaks it UP. When it does not rain for a while, things dry UP. One could go on and on, but I'll wrap it UP, for now . . . my time is UP! Oh . . . one more thing: What is the first thing you do in the morning and the last thing you do at night? U P ‌. Did that one crack you UP? Now I'll just shut UP!

From the Blokes in the Shed… Firstly, we will miss Bruce Mant-Old, who has retired after many years of service to the Spares Shed. Our best wishes go out to Bruce and Dulcie. We'll see you at Wednesday morning tea though. He is replaced by Roger Millard who becomes one of the four wise men!! Roger is a great toiler in the shed most Wednesdays as well as watering and mowing lawns. Welcome Roger. We had a good month past, with a sale of the Austin 10 plus we got a Morris Minor in the deal. The big 6/110 Wolseley motor we've had for 20 odd years has found a new home at long last. Just goes to show, everything comes in handy sooner or later. We're off to the Nelson Swap Meet with a trailer load of goodies on behalf on the club. Such fun. Heritage day has been and gone, a bit quieter this year, but we sold some goodies while at the park, plus two potential new members. Great. Lyall and Tony, Rose Tris and I took turns round the BBQ. Business was a bit slow (cold wind) but we had a few laughs. Donations are still coming through the door, with promises of more. Kindest to all - The Major
Update from Your Social Convenor Not a lot of news from the kitchen this month Our morning teas are again very popular with 60 to 75 turning up for their stories to tell and Don Laing and Bruce Rumble making scones. Well done to them, if anyone else would like to have a go just let me know. Natter & Noggin night was another good night and the video of Africa that was shown, was very interesting. Heritage Day although it was a cooler day, has again, been a great success for the branch. Thank you to everyone that sent in baking and especially to the ladies that helped in the kitchen for the day. A HUGE BIG THANK YOU TO YOU ALL Our “Natter & Noggin” is on the 22nd Feb. and it is a Ham steak & Salad night $10.00pp with a pot luck dessert, also there will be a movie of the 60th year rally and the model A rally. Motorcycle Report The January ride to Seddon to assist Ron with a clean-up in his museum was well supported and appreciated. Our takeover of the branch clubrooms and museum for Heritage Day resulted in a good display of restored and unrestored motorcycles, motorcycle motors and other motorcycling paraphernalia. Many hours of work went into removing the existing displays and mobile and immobile machines for our display. A big thanks to all those who lent a hand especially our branch museum custodian Bill Nicholas who gave a lot of time and his co-operation was invaluable. Bill also provided the back up for our Seddon ride. We will turn him back into a biker yet. The trailer was put to good use but not because of a break down. Our most junior member showed great bargaining skill and relieved Ron of one of his motorcycles. Some of our clubroom display will remain in place until after the rally to provide some interest for our entrants. The rally is virtually upon us and our committee is flat out completing the final last-minute necessities and compliances. MARSHALL’S PLEASE BE AT THE PARK BY 7.30 AM SATURDAY

Targa Time Trial Essential Information UPDATE Hi Everyone - Great News!! We've had a pleasing number of entries so far, and now, further to recent discussions I've had with Peter Martin, Targa NZ have agreed to extend the "Super Early Bird Discount" for both Targa Hawkes Bay & Targa NZ until 28 February 2019 for VCC members in VCC eligible cars with a VIC. Thanks Peter - Much appreciated. Please refer updated essential info below & call me for any further details. Essential Information-: "Super Early Bird Discount" entry fee is $1,393 for Targa Hawkes Bay & $2,793 for Targa NZ Central/Lower North Island until 28 February 2019. Targa Hawkes Bay-: 3 day event Fri 17th - Sun 19th May (with scrutineering/ documentation Thurs 16th May), and Targa NZ Central/Lower North Island-: 5 day event Tues 29th Oct - Sun 2 Nov (with scrutineering/documentation Mon 28th Oct). From 1 March "Standard" entry fee will apply, albiet with 30% discount for VCC members in VCC eligible cars with a VIC. Please note that this discount is not advertised on the Targa website & is available only to VCC members entering in VCC eligible cars with a VIC.
