Call for Volunteers VCC, as one of the Brayshaw Park founding Societies, has been asked to assist the Heritage Day organisation by providing 3 volunteers to help for just one hour sometime on the day for car parking & donation collection and 1 coordinator for 2 ½ hours either morning or afternoon.

Chairman’s Report I wish to make you aware that the constitution for Brayshaw Park Users and Park Administrators is being revised and if any of you wish to read the draft copy see Don Laing. On our Heritage Day (6th Feb 2021) we have been asked if we could help with people to man the car park and the gate, names, photograph and fingerprints to me or Don would be much appreciated and that will take a bit of pressure off with a few doing to much. That’s Park Admins request. Now to our responsibilities on the day, with members cars on display, judging and kitchen if you can help in any way in any area of our activities this would be very welcome thank you, remember this is your Branch so lets keep making it a successful one. Again while we have lost a couple of members we have also gained four or five new ones, I will take this opportunity to bid you a warm welcome, make yourselves known and join in it’s not just about cars, there’s a lot of good friendships made in this movement so enjoy .
Please look at Jim’s coming events and don’t forget the last smoko day is the 16th Dec and reopens on the 13th Jan 2021. It only remains for me to thank you all for another excellent year, both socially and financially and most of all we have survived a pandemic. I must take a line or two to thank those who contributed so much to this branch in the last year it has amazed me just how much has been achieved I thank you all. Enjoy your families and friends over the holiday time drive safely and we will see you in the new year, if not before. Club Captain’s Report November was quite a busy month with the Ford Clubs swap meet on the 15th and our annual combined run to Linkwater on the 22 nd, both of which I unfortunately missed as I was visiting a relative in Invercargill who is on finals and last but not least we finally got to see Richard Paterson's’ collection of Landrover’s plus one or two other exotic examples of motor vehicles, a very enthusiastic collector. Also, on the day we visited Trevor McLean’s collection of fire arms dating back a hundred and fifty years or more. Some of these weapons he made himself especially some of the muzzle loaders, one which he made the barrel out of a Model A steering shaft which he profiled and rifled the inside of the shaft with a home-made machine he made himself. (very clever) Dale organized a floral art display and high tea for the ladies on the same day as the Landrover’s and guns and by all accounts was a great success. The idea was Dale’s and speaking with her at the committee meeting it was a good idea which is well worth repeating and we feel that the ladies need to be included more in our activities. Coming up is a trip the to Geoff Buick’s property in the Ure Valley on Sunday the 6th of this month. This is a rerun of a run we did last December and takes the form of a picnic lunch and Geoff can fill us in on the local history. There is a fish and chip run on 20 th December at Harris Green next the clubrooms starting at 1130hrs a change from Picton as it was felt that the road to Picton is a bit stressful to old vehicles due to traffic and lack of passing places on the Picton road. Later in the month after the stress of Christmas is over, we will have our annual barbeque here at 33 David Street we are looking at the 30 th December which is a Wednesday from about 1600hrs on. Further down the track there is the run to Anakiwa on January 31 st for a picnic and David Bool has offered to take the clubs barby as well. We have been made aware that the Marlborough Historical Society are organizing a two-day run through the Rainbow to Hanmer and back via Molesworth and the Awatere Valley. I have attached their brochure with details of speakers etc should anyone be interested. The trip we had planned to Middlehurst and Muller is now on for the 13 th March hopefully. It will now be a day run and those who paid see David for your refund, more details closer to the time.

Rainbow Station – Hanmer Springs – Molesworth Station High Country Heritage Tour with Marlborough Historical Society Saturday January 30th and Sunday 31st 2021
This two-day Heritage Tour departs at 8am from Marlborough Museum - Brayshaw Heritage Park, on Saturday January 30 th, with an overnight stay in Hanmer Springs. (Own arrangements.) Join Historians Steve Bagley, John Orchard and Robin Cox, to learn about the History and Geography of these two iconic high country stations. See High Country scenery, visit cob buildings, hear the stories and view the researched maps and photographs. We run this trip every 3 years. You will need a reliable, high clearance 4WD or a seat in one to take part. It is hoped that the Marlborough Historical Society Inc. can help to facilitate transport, but this is reliant on the co-operation of those with vacant seats in 4WD vehicles taking part. Booking and costs: 1. Book by 15 January at Marlborough Museum (10 and 4 daily) by paying $10 for each Marlborough Historical Society member, or $15 for those who are not members of the society. However, society membership is only $20 per annum, with many other benefits. 2. A fee of $40 per vehicle will need to be paid at the Rainbow Station Accommodation House. 3. Booking and payment of overnight accommodation in Hanmer Springs is the responsibility of those taking part. 4. Sufficient fuel is essential for all vehicles before starting this journey. 5. All other costs are the responsibility of the participants. Please bring with you funds for your road charges, accommodation, food, etc. This event is during the school holidays so please book your accommodation early. Trip details: • The trip departs Brayshaw Park carpark at 8am on Saturday January 30 th. • Proceed to Hanmer Springs via the Wairau Valley, Top House, Dip Flat, Rainbow Station, Island Pass, Lake Sedgemere, Lake Tennyson, St James Station and Jacks Pass. On Sunday January 31 st , we meet in Hanmer at a designated spot and travel back to Blenheim via Acheron Accommodation House, Molesworth Station, Jordan Accommodation House, and the Awatere Valley. The trip is very weather dependent. Those taking part will be contacted if road conditions or fire risk imposes a road closure. Limited numbers. Bookings and payments are required by 15 Jan 2021. 6

Secretary’s Scribblings Last Wednesday we held our last Committee meeting for 2020. Hasn’t the year gone past in a blur, hopefully 2021 will slow down a bit, but I doubt it. As we get older, the time seems to go past quicker than it did when we were children. I suppose if we asked the younger generation their comment could be, they cannot wait till Christmas, or their birthday comes again so for them maybe the world is spinning at the right pace. From our Committee Meeting. Thanks to all those members who have paid their subs. Your Branch levy allows us to keep the Branch going for the next year. We have a few members who have not paid yet, so please do the right thing, as if you do not pay you will not receive the Vintage Viewpoint or Beaded Wheels. We have had a few resignations, but we also have applications for new membership every month so that is great. We have around 320 members of our Branch. We have a very dedicated group of members keeping the parts complex going and every month there is a good amount of funds coming from the sale of parts to old vehicle enthusiasts from around the country, so thanks to these chaps. You will see from Jim’s report there are a number of outings organised for the next few months. There has been a call for helpers on Heritage Day, on 6 th February, when we have a great display of cars and bikes. Please put your name forward as a helper on the gates or parking, please do not just leave it to the same ones who are always there doing these jobs. If you can offer anything to help out with your Club, please don’t be afraid to offer as we are always on the lookout for more helpers, as many of our members are in the older age group and have either done their bit, or cannot help for a variety of reasons. Another trip Jim has coming up in March is to Middlehurst Station. If there is enough interest, there is the possibility we could organise a 6 to 8 seated van to take especially those who feel they cannot drive that distance now. Please let me know, as I will have to book the vehicle sooner rather than later. For those who are interested, The Brayshaw Heritage Park Administrators are updating their Constitution. The Vintage Car Club are one of four Founding members of this group and I have a copy of the Draft constitution for your perusal.

Our building crew are pouring concrete this week along the Northern side of the Electrical Shed where a veranda is being built to become the gentleman’s open solarium. The crew are doing a great job on this project. Another project will be rebuilding the retaining wall to the South of the Museum, which will be tackled after Heritage Day. Concern has been expressed that members are not removing their dirty footwear when entering the Museum from Patchett’s Green and are trekking mud and other debris through into the Redman Room. Please remove footwear if it is at all wet or grass has been recently mown when coming in for Smoko, as it removes a huge job for the custodians. The Mini Car which the Branch owns has been away for some R&M done on the Brakes and other parts on the car. There was discussion about the this. Some thought the car should be sold, others thought it was a talking point with visitors and can be used by members on runs. After this discussion it was resolved; That the future of the Mini be decided at the AGM in May 2021. We have received thanks from the organisers of the Marlborough Auto Swapmeet on the 15th November for members who displayed vehicles on the day. They presented $1500 to the Nelson/Marlborough Rescue Helicopter from the day. The Marlborough Historical Society is taking a 2 day trip through the Rainbow and Molesworth Stations at the end of January, which could be of interest to members. Please see flyer in the Vintage Viewpoint or contact me for details. Those of you on email would have received an email from the National President about participation in the 2022 Vero Festival of Motoring in Taranaki. Please reply to this, click either yes or no, as the organising committee will be making a call soon as to whether it is worthwhile continuing with the event and our participation is needed. Now that we are at the end of the year, our last Smoko will be on Wednesday 16th December. Our first Smoko in the new year will be on 13 th January, which is when we will be having our first committee meeting for 2021. From the Blokes in the Shed… November - December Who would have thought October’s sales could have been surpassed, however November’s efforts certainly did, mainly due to sales at the Saturday morning market and a very successful time at the Ford Clubs mini swap meet and vehicle display at the Councils Carpark building. Whilst the vehicle display was great few vendors took advantage of the swap meet spaces, this however worked in our favour with very few vendors offering the selection of vehicle parts and collectibles that we had on our site, which reflected in the takings for the day. Congratulations to the Ford club who I understand made a considerable contribution from the swap meet and display to the Lifeflight Trust. Parts are still incoming with one particular interesting offering been confirmed— —watch this space!!. The building doing team are virtually head down and bum up with excavations prepared and boxed ready for concrete to be poured and a veranda roof to be built. Thanks to Linc for trailering his digger in and speeding up what would have been a back breaking job. This year the whole team has contributed a huge effort and expertise to the parts department so a huge thanks guys and wishing you all a very merry Christmas and a happy new year.

Update from Your Kitchen

Hi Everyone, Here we are again at the end of another year and it has been a very different one, with Covid-19 and all the lockdowns, but we have survived and hoping 2021 is going to be better and brighter. Up until this month it has been a reasonably quite time in the kitchen but this month is of course the silly season. We have a couple of busy weeks with Christmas functions. Our November Noggin & Natter was held on Friday night (4th) it being a pot luck and as we know with our pot luck dinners we have some amazing dishes brought along, we have some very good chefs in the club. Morning teas are still very popular with between 60 and 80 in for their scones and biscuits. I know it is a mans thing as they talking mainly about what's under the bonnet of their car, but the ladies are also very welcome to come along. (We can talk about our aches and pains or fashion). Our last morning tea for this year is Dec. 16th and we will be back on Wed Jan 13th. On Sunday 20th Dec. we are having a Fish & Chip gathering on Harris Glade, Brayshaw Park from 4.30pm. Buy your fish & chips and come along for our last get together this year. I would like to say a HUGE THANK YOU to all the ladies that have helped me in the kitchen this year. If you are going away Travel safely, good health for 2021 and a MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU ALL.

MOTORCYCLE REPORT Unfortunately, the branch combined outing to Linkwater did not attract a large turnout of our motorcycle section. Only nine including the backup driver. The heavy shower of rain an hour prior to departure time may have had some influence on decisions to stay at home. As it turned out the weather cleared, no one got wet and those who did not go may have been told to get outside and mow the lawns and weed the garden. Serves you right. It was good to have new member Owen riding his Triumph Trophy and John W had his Triumph Tiger 100 out with us for the first time. At Linkwater we were joined by a local couple who will possibly become new members. I am told they are restoring a Triumph Speed Twin which our branch treasurer, David, once had an interest in. After lunch those who did not look with concern at threatening clouds and bolt for home visited a local shed where the owner gave an interesting talk on the restored and under restoration vehicles in his very tidy and well-equipped workshop. Our thanks for allowing us to make the visit. The visit was advertised only by word of mouth and I and those who were co-ordinating the cars on the day apologies if the message did not get through. We had genuine reasons for the discretion. Trev

Motorcycle Calendar Saturday December 12th Ulysses toy run, meet at Woodbourne Tavern 11am for departure of 12 noon. Sunday December 13th Last get together before Christmas. We will leave the park at 11am do a lap of the Omaka Valley and end up at The Woody for one of their excellent bar meals. Wives, partners and girlfriends we would really be pleased if those of you not going on the ride would join us at The Woody. Any prospective members also feel free to come and mix and mingle. NOTE: This ride is on the SECOND Sunday not the third as the third is only 4 days before Christmas.
Sunday January 23rd Leave the park at 11am for Picton. Note to work in with holidays and the newsletter this is the 4th Sunday of January not the 3 rd. NOTE Day and leaving times are not our usual days and times, read this calendar and your reminder emails carefully.
27th National Motorcycle Rally Masterton 12th – 14th March, 2021 After Rally Tour 15th – 18th March, 2021 Plans are progressing well for the upcoming National Motorcycle Rally to be held in March 2020. Like everyone is this country, we have been through the “will we or wont we” scenario but we have kept the faith and continue to work towards the event being held. We have had five entrants from New South Wales so we hope that they will be able to make it across the Tasman and join us for the event. After Rally Hub Tour 15-18 March Three great rides have been planned for those who stay on for the after -rally tour. The routes will take the riders to some places for which the Wairarapa is famous with plenty of time to take in the sights, enjoy the country roads and enjoy the local hospitality. Vero International Festival of Motoring Most of you will know that the Vero Festival of Historic Motoring will now be held in 2022. The dates are Jan 16 to 21st 2022 The organising Committee will be sending out a request for your expression of interest later this year. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU RESPOND to this if you are considering going. Events like this have significant budgets to manage and some of you will recall the last International Rally suffered significant losses. Whatever your view on that result, learnings have been taken and you will have read in the latest Beaded Wheels that the Management Committee will NOT accept the event running at a loss. To that effect they are looking for some surety that entrant numbers will be sufficient to make the event viable. It will not be a firm commitment and I do urge you to respond. If there is insufficient interest, there is a possibility the event won’t go ahead. This is an event not to miss, a shorter period than previous International Rallies, in an area with some great motoring and the time of year hopefully means plenty of sunshine. So, get your mates together, decide what vehicle you’re taking and plan to be there.

Dunvegan Rally 2020 With the wholesale cancellation of all worthwhile events over the year, Zig and I were falling into the depths of cabin fever. In the interests of preserving sanity we decided we would have to take ourselves on a ride somewhere, anywhere. In the course of discussion the topic of the Otago Branch Dunvegan bike rally came up with the observation that no entry form had been published and no cancellation had been seen. A little investigation with Canterbury spies came up with the information that no, it was not cancelled and yes, entry forms would be available shortly. Entry forms duly arrived, were filled in, money sent and we were in. A couple of months went by and Auckland lapsed into level 3 and we thought a cancellation would be imminent. But no cancellation was forthcoming and bicycle preparation launched into full swing. Zig selected a '67 FLH Shovelhead Harley Electra glide from his wardrobe and I put the pannier bags on my '77 Honda 400/4. Departure day eventually loomed and Zig spent the night before putting the clutch back in the Harley. Thursday before the Rally saw us off in fine weather on the first leg to Christchurch. The trip proved uneventful and that evening saw us at Springston with Mike Becker. A celebratory dinner at the Lincoln Pub saw us in good fettle for the next days haul to Dunedin. Friday dawned fine and clear and Zig, Beck and I departed for the Rolleston service station, the appointed meeting place for the Canterbury contingent. The final count of 9 riders finally turned up though one on a Yamaha 2 stroke V4 about faced and departed trailing a head of steam. He later caught us up after a machinery change to a BMW K100. The tenth gentleman in the contingent was in a Porsche Boxster, complete with hood down, a flat hat and leather driving gloves. A ribald discussion arose concerning his parentage, his character flaws and being a downright wiss. His lame reply was that he had broken his leg playing golf and that he was in convalescence and unable to ride. A likely story indeed! This of course provoked another outburst from the unsympathetic gathering and on that note it was time to depart. The unfortunate subject of derision was of course His Eminence the BW Chairman Down the road and onto the first regroup at the Tea Pot Inn .We picked up two more fellow travelers at Temuka, one on a '30 Indian Four. This with its straight pipe turned out to be the best sounding bike of the weekend. It had a ton of pace too. Next scheduled stop was the Lagonda Tea rooms in Oamaru. Suitably refreshed and its on to Waikouaiti and time to deal with the Kilmog. The long climb here sorts out the small bikes and your choice is to take your time or wring its neck. I chose the latter. Zigs Harley probably helped by pounding the hills flat. Finally I summitted and it was time to get a little adventurous and catch the rest up. No problem. Into Waitati and onto the last

major hurdle, Dunedins Northern Motorway. This is a really steep climb and it's impossible to hide your lack of ccs here. This time I took my time and worked my way over at a pace more sympathetic to the bikes capability. We regrouped at the end of the motorway in order to enter Dunedin as a group to make sure all arrived at our motel. After 10 minutes or so the stragglers had arrived and we proceeded to cross the city on the excellent one way system.. The motel was duly arrived at, bikes put in the garage, unpacking completed and it was time for riders debriefing at the Carisbrook Tavern next door. The evening was filled with a noggin and natter at the Otago VCCs excellent clubrooms out at St Clair. This was a highlight of the rally by way of the extensive supper that was furnished to entrants. In fact it set the tone of the whole rally for the standard of food supplied. I must have a word with Mariann. We were generously ferried to St Clair and back by Otago club members at no charge, another feature of the friendly nature of this rally. Rally organiser Bill Veitch briefly addressed us and this was combined with badge presentation to some Otago members. Finally some time later it was time to go back to our motel in case we forgot we had a job on next day.

Rally day was another fine day and after a quick coffee and bike check it was time to get down to Dunedins Chinese Garden for the 9.15 start time. We were early enough to get a good look at our fellow travelers bikes, a fairly eclectic collection of old and not so old. What was obvious was the number of electric start club eligible bikes competing, not surprising and sensible taking into consideration the obvious age of the entrants. Start times were given out and Zig and I decided to ignore them and start together along with another who like us wasn't after awards. As I was ex Dunners I was told I was leading as I would know the way. Protestations that it was 60 years since I left the Southern City were to no avail so I had a quick read of the route, pressed the button and we were away. The first 5 or 6 instructions were easy enough as they were major streets taking us to 3 Mile Hill Road, a major exit to Mosgiel. A quick look in the mirror showed the Electra glide following behind with our mates BMW R100 in the distance so down the hill we went, still an interesting and sporting ride after 60 years. At the bottom of the hill we branched off to Wingatui and here my problems started. The trouble with major roads is that you might know where they are going but when the route instructions give you the roads actual names the name is meaningless as major roads tend to not have street signs. However by bluff and by good luck I got onto Gladstone road, a major Taieri road and knew where I was. Next instructions put us back towards Dunedin but I recognised it as the old main road into Dunedin heading to Fairfield and after a scramble around the newish Southern Motorway we were onto Saddle Hill Road and finally heading out of town, Over Saddle Hill and Scroggs Hill and we descended down to Brighton. Here we met our first casualty. A Rudge that had lost 2 gears. It was the backup for him. On to Taieri Mouth we went then over the hills to Waihola then down past the Milton Hilton and out to Kaitangata. From Kaitangata it was onto Balclutha and lunch at South Otago VCC. Here we were handed a box containing a prodigious lunch half of which went into my saddlebag for emergencies.

Lunch over it was time to head out to Clydevale and from there to Tapanui. Unfortunately here I missed a turn off and we ended up in Beaumont which luckily has a pub. Over a light refreshment Zig suggested that as it was only 2pm we could retrace our steps. We headed up to Raes Junction and turned in to Tapanui. A few Ks in I spotted a sign for Moa Flat. Remembering Moa flat Road was on our route. I turned off through Edievale and onto Moa Flat Road, a road that reminds you why you ride motorbikes. Turning right from Ettrick we headed down to Millers Flat and joined a crowd at the pub. Everyone felt we were nearing the end of the days run and a bevvy was earned. We finished off the days outing by crossing the Clutha River, heading up to the Roxburgh Dam crossing back and returning to Roxburgh to the Roxburgh Riders Rest, our accommodation for the night.
Continuing the tradition of great eating a fine Barbeque meal was dished up and washed down appropriately. Speeches were made and awards awarded. Winner was a 1924 Harley Model F and the Indian 4 got the oldest bike/rider trophy. (90/70) Much discussion went on into the evening till old age called and we went to bed. A truly great day out.

Sunday came and time to leave the Rally and head for the Lindis and Christchurch. We intended to go round the lakes but this was the weekend of the Ohau fire and at Omarama owing to smoke and the possibility of road closure we headed down through Kurow and Waimate to brunch at the SH1 junction then the long hack up SH1 to Springston. A nights rest and it was back to the stop/go signs and traffic lights on the interminable journey to Blenheim. A final squirt down Weld Pass and the jobs done. 1800 Ks neat on the clock, 5 fine days out and neither Zig or I had a spanner out. It doesn't get better than that.

The wonderful Pam Ayres...now 73 years old and penned her latest ode ~ to coronavirus... I'm normally a social girl I love to meet my mates But lately with the virus here We can't go out the gates You see, we are the 'oldies' now We need to stay inside If they haven't seen us for a while They'll think we've upped and died They'll never know the things we did Before we got this old There wasn't any Facebook So not everything was told We may seem sweet old ladies Who would never be uncouth But we grew up in the 60s If you only knew the truth! There was sex and drugs and rock 'n roll The pill and miniskirts We smoked, we drank, we partied And were quite outrageous flirts Then we settled down, got married And turned into someone's mum, Somebody's wife, then nana, Who on earth did we become? We didn't mind the change of pace Because our lives were full But to bury us before we're dead Is like a red rag to a bull!
So here you find me stuck inside For four weeks, maybe more I finally found myself again Then I had to close the door! It didn’t really bother me I'd while away the hour I'd bake for all the family But I've got no flaming flour! Now Netflix is just wonderful I like a gutsy thriller I'm swooning over Idris Or some random sexy killer At least I've got a stash of booze For when I'm being idle There's wine and whiskey, even gin If I'm feeling suicidal! So let's all drink to lockdown To recovery and health And hope this awful virus Doesn't decimate our wealth We'll all get through the crisis And be back to join our mates Just hoping I'm not far too wide To fit through the flaming gates!
