Chairman’s Report Your committee has put forward the 19th August for a special meeting to make changes to the constitution to bring thing us into line with the current changes in the way we bank and updating the rules around our banking. I ask you all to please read the two resolutions that your committee has recommended. The plan is to have the meeting at 10.30am. Your approval of the changes will also make it easier for your treasurer to help with the no cheque’s policies of banks. The remits are proposed are on the next page and were in last months viewpoint under the Secretary’s Scribblngs. Some members will have noticed the cutting down of shrubs behind the club rooms, this has been necessary as most of those were out of control, it will let in more light and will not be so wet on areas of Patchets Green and we wouldn’t have to clean the guttering out so often. We will replant with lower and smaller shrubs. Thanks to Kevin, Chris John for a job well done. I think Cath had a hand in this as well. When you go into the men’s toilet now you can see what you’re doing. Jim our club captain had a very good outing in July an enlightening talk and visits to sights of early Marlborough History. Thanks Jim it was enjoyed by all, keep an eye on our coming events as he has more of this to come. We will need members help on our Daffodil Day 23rd August.
Our rally event on 16th October is well under way will Chris and Jim doing the planning this year. It would be nice to see a few motorcycle members join us, if you have any ideas please let Chris or Jim know. There are one or two other things that will come up over the next couple of months that we will have to make a decision on. I will have to put the pen down as it’s getting hard to see what I am writing, my eyes are starting to close.

Club Captain’s Report July saw two well attended runs firstly the combined trip to Pelorus Bridge with the Nelson club had fourteen vehicles and about thirty people on Sunday 12 July, the run was helped by the good fortune of the weather and a well enjoyed day for those attending. The second run was a historical run in the lower Wairau with local history given to us by local historian and author on the subject, Barry Holdaway. The subject covered the period of the Moa Hunters through Te Rauparaha’s influence in the 1820s and 1840s (Wairau Affray), the fledgling capitol of the Marlborough Provence at the Wairau bar and its decline (due to seismic events and improved transport), to people of influence in early European settlement and identities, the setting up of Blenheim and finished with wartime military installations. The day was attended by over fifty-four people in twenty-eight vehicles recorded and I know there were quite a lot not entered on my record sheet with a good turnout of historical vehicles. I felt this was one of the best attended and enlightened runs that I have had anything to do with and I would like to extend a big thank you to Barry Holdaway. I for one learnt an awful lot about my home patch and doubt that anyone came away without learning something. Our annual prizegiving function and luncheon was held today at the Woodbourne Tavern on Sunday, there’s a list of prizewinners on page 14. Also, in August we have a local trip to Hawkesbury Carriages on Wednesday 19th after smoko leaving Brayshaw park at 1130 for a picnic lunch. Peter Thwaites is running the annual mudplug on the 16 th this month call him for details or if you can give him some assistance on the day details on page 16. Further down the track I am organising another historical local day this time the theme will be on aviation in Marlborough covering from Kingsford- Smiths arrival in 1928 through the war years and taking in the rise and fall of Safe Air to today. I have spoken to Paul Davidson of the argosy Trust and he will come onboard along side myself and Allan Graham and Rex Handley as ex pilots and hopefully an engineer. I am planning on running this on Sunday 20 th September.

Secretary’s Scribblings The weather has warmed up somewhat which makes it more pleasant for vintage motoring. With that, what a great turnout for Jim’s organised run to the lower Wairau and for Barry Holdaway’s commentary on the history of the area. I bought Barry’s book and what an interesting history our province has. From our Committee meeting last Wednesday. Don has quotes from three companies for the installation of security cameras around our area. We will be making a decision about there is the near future. Some of the Trees around our grounds have been given a haircut, some of them at ground level, to tidy up. Still more needs to be done, as after 20 of so years, many of these plants have passed their best and need to be replaced. The Committee have decided that we need to move with the times and install an Eftpos machine in the Clubrooms to make financial transactions easier for members and visitors alike. Hopefully this will be up and running by Daffodil Day. As you will be aware by now, the Branch is running the Daffodil Day fundraising event to raise funds for the Cancer Society later this month, so if you can help with gates, parking of baking to sell from the kitchen, this would be much appreciated. There was discussion about the possibility of selling the Mini which belongs to the Club. Please let us know your thoughts. Thanks to all who attended the Annual Dinner and Prizegiving, and for the presentation to Tony Pyne for 50 years membership of the Club. On behalf of the Branch I am heading to Whanganui next weekend for the Clubs AGM. Reports about this at a later date. Short and sweet this month, so get out there and have a great month of vintage motoring.

From the Blokes in the Shed‌ The work for our dedicated building team continues with the preparation for a concrete pad on the North side of the electrical shed which is to have a verandah roof over to provide shelter during events, (or is it for ageing members to sit in the sun ?!!). Our thanks to the Choral Society and Kevin Murphy for the donation of a large quantity of steel Dexion angle iron shelving which will be utilised for the fit out of the new 40 foot container, also an aluminium glazed door has been procured to fit amidships in the container which will assist entry and provide some natural light. Roger M has completed the dissection of the Austin A60 and a recent donation of a car rotisserie has found a new owner. We are most fortunate to have enthusiastic people offering to assist in our parts department and David (Red) has been welcomed as has Dexter (welcome back Dexter), both willing participants and their contribution is appreciated.

Spring is certainly on its way, the daffodils are flowering, lawns are growing and so are the weeds. July was a reasonably quite month with two functions, our Natter & Noggin night was another successful one, being a pot luck and the lovely variety of dishes was again amazing. By the time you receive the news letter we will have had our Mid-winter dinner. Don't forget Daffodil Day is on the 23rd August, again we would like donations of baking and if anyone would like to help in the kitchen for an hour it would be much appreciated. Please contact me on M: 02102657507. Also I will be at the club rooms on the Saturday afternoon from 1.30 to 3.30 if anyone wants to drop their baking off. Natter & Noggin this month is on the 28th August it will be another Pot Luck, and I am hoping to have a speaker from Age Concern,. Unfortunately at the time of writing this she hasn't confirmed but when she does will flick an e-mail plus advise those at morning smoko's. This should be interesting as rules and regulations regarding trusts, wills, power attorney and our rights; which are changing rapidly. Look after yourselves, good health and stay safe, Cheers, Dale

MARLBOROUGH BRANCH VINTAGE CAR CLUB OF NZ SPORTING TRIAL SUNDAY 16th AUGUST 2020 Kaituna Valley between Renwick and Havelock. Bring your gumboots! Venue will be signposted. Members of the Vintage Car Club and the public are invited watch our Sporting Trial to be held on the 16th August starting the first course around 9:30am, scrutineering starts at 8:30am. The event follows the style of “Trials” events which were popular in the UK in the 1950s, where drivers and their crews endeavor to get their cars as far as possible up steep and slippery farm tracks and through other difficult courses. A number of these courses will be set out and points are awarded for the distance attained. The cumulative score at the end of the event will determine the winners of the various classes. The event will conclude with a prize giving at the Woodbourne Tavern Renwick where nibbles will be provided. The branch BBQ will be there for the midday break, thanks to Rose and the team so bring some coin for a hot lunch! Classes Class one - Short wheelbase - 90” or less Class two - Long wheelbase - over 90” Other prize categories; First Lady, Best Dressed and the coveted ‘Ballsup” trophy. The event organizers will have the final say in this matter. Each class will be judged separately and have a class winner. The overall highest points scorer will be declared the winner.

MOTORCYCLE REPORT In spite of the bleak weather there was a good attendance of Marlborough and Nelson riders and supporters at the annual gathering at the Woody. Twenty three locals were present ten of them on club eligible motorcycles plus two club eligible cars and several moderns. Good to see three of our local lady’s present. First time out on a local run and getting a lot of interest and complimentary comments was Graeme’s 1935 New Imperial. New Imperials were built in Birmingham from 1903 until 1938 when it ran into difficulties, it was due to move to Coventry under the ownership of well know motorcycle guru Jack Sangster but a bloke called Adolf made a mess of Sangster’s plans, New Imperials future and the city of Coventry. New Imperials never remerged in the post war era. Pre -war some well-known riders had some racing success on new Imperials but Stanley Woods summed up the racing models as very fast, not always reliable and difficult to ride. Graeme’s bike albeit of only 250cc sports many features that at the time would have been considered pushing the envelope of motorcycle design , the unit construction engine probably had Burman, Albion and Sturmey Archer makers of gearbox’s shaking their heads saying it will never catch on and Reynolds chains would have muttered darkly about the gear driven primary drive, decades latter both concepts would be “invented “ again with great fanfare and continue today. Our thanks to John Welch who co-ordinated with the Nelson riders and to the staff at the Woody who coped pretty well with our group as well as a gathering elsewhere on the premises. After lunch a visit to see Barry and Viv’s vintage AJS’s had been arranged, we had seen these bikes a couple of years ago on a garage run since then one has been completed and the other only awaits the return of nickelling and it too will be on the road. One bike has been assembled in unrestored condition with components in original paint complete with battle scars while the other has undergone a nut and bolt restoration both in their own way appealing. Thanks to Barry and Viv for having us. It is our misfortune we will be seeing less of one of our most active and popular motorcycle section members. Barry Newman has been a multiple winner of our best attendance trophy and a regular procurer of interesting and quality restorations. Barry and Jill are taking over as owners of the Little Wanganui Hotels and Motels north of Westport, south of Karamea. We wish them all the very best for every success in their new venture. Sounds like a great venue and an interesting ride for a very long weekend.

See you there with a restored, original or under restoration motorcycle. If you have a friend who has an interesting new or unusual motorcycle bring him along as well. After four years of separation, my wife and I finally divorced amicably. I wanted to start going out with women again, but had no idea how to start, so I decided to look in the personal columns of the local newspaper. After reading through all the listings, I circled three that seemed possible in terms of age and interests, but I put off calling them. Two days later, there was a message on my answering machine from my ex-wife: “I came over to your house today to borrow some tools and saw the ads you circled in the paper. Don’t call the one in the second column. It’s me.” A man told a Psychiatrist: ‘I think I’m a schizophrenic with multiple-personality disorder.
