Chairman’s Report Let me take this opportunity on behalf of all members to extend to David and his family our sincere condolences. We welcomed Michael Lavender and his wife from Head Office to attend a special luncheon at Linkwater Grove Arm where he presented Bruce Rumble with his 50yr certificate and badge, he also presented Glen Harris, Janice and myself with our 35yr badges. It was good to have the motorcycles and vintage cars at one venue, a good club day out. ( Lots of whitebait patties for lunch). The Ashburton Branch are having a tour of our area starting with a meal on the 14th Dec. They have invited our club members to join them on 14th for a run to Lake Chalais and Port Underwood on the 15th. Thanks to Ross Kensington for looking after the list for the Cruise Ships and Train Trips. Chairman’s Run: Well, what can I say except “ thanks to everyone for their company.” A very special thanks to Cath and Kevin, there’s no substitute for local knowledge. They have done us proud with four wonderful days. We will do this again soon. Next wed the 13th Nov after smoko we will have a discussion on restoring the electrical shed and construction of two other sheds.

Club Captain’s Report The year seems to be getting into overdrive with another month gone. October saw a run to meet the steam train at Seddon Station and the combined run with the motorcycle section and cars to the Linkwater Tavern which was very well attended by both sections with the presentation of 35 and 50 year badges to loyal longstanding members. It was the day after the All Black Ireland test and I thought the staff at Linkwater did well to provide us with such good service after such a late night , considering more of us turned out than had originally been expected with twenty three cars and forty seven people plus about twenty two bikes and riders. Our thanks to them and also to the national executive for sending a representative the award the badges. The chairman’s run got under way on Tuesday 26th meeting at the clubrooms at 0800hrs and setting sail before 0830 with nine vehicles ( five Model A’s on 1931 Chrysler a Singer a Triumph 2000 and a Wolseley) heading over Taylors Pass encountering a large mob of cattle being driven to the cattle yards, apart from some splattering of used grass no problems onwards up the Awatere valley where we met Don and Linda Laing for photos at our lunch stop at the Molesworth Gates. (See photos on separate page in magazine). After lunch it was off on the Molesworth road with several stops enroute for points of interest ably guided by Allan Graham who has spent much time over the last several decades flying over and for Molesworth. Thanks Allan, your knowledge greatly enhanced the run. I have always felt shingle roads and the Model A go well together and was not disappointed. We arrived at Hanmer Springs without incident about 4:30pm for first overnight stop. Next day it was down through north Canterbury to Hawerden to visit Ray Millers collection of cars. After lunch it was via the back roads to Rangiora to check in to motel for a spell and later visited the Rossburn Museum which was attached to their restaurant where we had our evening meal. Next day (Thursday) it was to Wairaki Road to John Stewarts car collection and garden. This is an extensive collection with I believe over 300 cars. It was described by one of the guides as a private collection that got slightly out of control. That said though it was the best presented with dust-controlled buildings etc and was well done and well worth a look. After lunch we headed for Rolleston by the back roads and roadworks where we eventually arrived at John Winchester’s car collection at Dunns' Crossing Road at Rolleston. This collection was a Ford collection in a man cave to drool over. I had to peel away at this stage and head to Wigram to stay with family and drive down to Catlin’s the next day for a family wedding though not in the model A. Friday saw the remaining members visit the Ohoka Farmers Market to buy their lunch then head to Wilsons Mill Garden belonging to Kelvin Finlay which is 6

a 16-acre garden complete with a vehicle collection consisting mainly of unrestored vehicles he acquired on his travels to Canada and USA. Next point of call was Abbey Airfield to see Ivan Campbell’s replica warbirds. Saturday many cars peeled off to do their own thing before heading back home by the main road, in my case I did not get home until Tuesday as I had family duties till then, when I caught up with Chris and Sharon at Hanmer and drove back home through Molesworth. Everyone returned home safely after a rewarding and satisfying journey with only two minor mechanical issues, one a fuel blockage quickly fixed and the other, the advance on my truck disconnected from the distributer north bound on Jack’s Pass which took ten seconds and burnt finger to fix and be on way. This trip would not have been the success it was without the knowledge and the effort of organizing the itinerary, accommodation, and all the hundred and one other details by Catherine and Kevin Millar. From the Blokes in the Shed… Good to back after Rose and my five weeks away to places afar. Wonderful trip, but no place like home. eh! I'm really delighted at the progress the restoration team are making on the veteran T ambulance. Engine running up and up on it's wheels, but still lots of little jobs to do. Well done team. The shed has been running well in my absence, as I thought it would, with such good progress in the yard. Donations are still arriving, with sorting and storage continuing. Rose and I are off again for a couple of weeks, see you all in November. Thanks Tris, Roger, Tiger and troops for holding the fort in my absence. Cheers

Secretary’s Scribblings What a great few days the group on the Chairman’s Tour into North Canterbury had last week. Thanks to Catherine and Kevin for helping out with the itinerary and organising the vehicle collections, gardens and other attractions we visited. We had an extra few days with my son at Oxford, helping him with tailing lambs and a few other jobs. We headed back to Hanmer Springs later on Monday afternoon and boy it sure was warm with the good old nor-wester blowing. Met up with Jim on Tuesday morning and headed back through the Molesworth so avoiding the main roads which don’t really suit our old cars. Anyone who missed this trip would be very welcome on our next Jaunt whenever that may be and there is plenty of laughs and camaraderie with a great group of likeminded people. The Model and its “new” engine performed very well apart from a bit of overheating on the way home. There are photos on our website, https://www.marlboroughvcc.com/ Annual Subscriptions are now overdue. We have twenty-two members who are now unfinancial as at 1st November and you will not receive Beaded Wheels or our local magazine if you do not pay your subscription soon. Please pay, as part of the sub comes back to our Branch to help with running things here. Also, remember to include your membership number and name with the payment to help head office identify it. Around the grounds, there are trees and shrubs that need a trim. This is an annual thing as we all know with any plant there is always a need to keep them tidy. The steps from Patchetts Green into the Clubrooms have been cleaned and sprayed with “Wet and Forget” but please be careful when using these. There has been a request by some of the Ladies for defibrillator training. This will be on 11th December at 11 am in the Library for those interested. There has been a request that the area along the veranda outside the Redman Room be kept clear for Emergency Vehicles. Please do not park here, as you may be the one to need an ambulance one day! Targa Time Trial A few months ago Jon Haack asked me if I would like to do the Targa Time Trial. He would drive his Triumph Spitfire with his wife, Gerardine as navigator. I could take my 1968 Volvo 131. Neither of us knew how the Time Trial worked but decided to enter anyway. As my wife gets very car sick, I asked a friend (Ash Price) from the MX5 club in Motueka, if he would like to drive while I attempted to navigate. Instant yes reply from him so all arranged. He joined the Nelson VCC to be eligible too. The Time Trial is run by the New Zealand V.C.C. in conjunction with the main tarmac rally using the same route book as the racing entrants. They run the stages first then we follow. The people doing the Targa Tour then run after us while the roads are still closed. For each stage, we are given the stage distance and time. The challenge is to maintain the correct average speed to arrive at the finish on time. There are can be intermediate split times within the stage too but we don’t know where. Points are given for every second you are early or late at those points. 1 second early you lose 1 point. Stages varied from 9.66 km to 47.53 km with average speeds from about 58km/ h to 80km/h and time from 9 minutes to 40 minutes. The most challenging stages were going to and from Whangamomona. This has tight, steep, corners which make it a real challenge to maintain the required average speed. It also rained to add to the challenge. Total distance covered for the week of closed and touring stages was around 1900km. Add our travel to Taupo and back from Palmerston North and our total was 2500km. There were 18 entries in the VCC Time Trial. Quite a few had entered in the first one last year and enjoyed it so much they returned. The Volvo got us to 5th place over all with Jon and Gerardine 7th in the Spitfire. That made us 1st and 3rd of the novices. The Volvo was also awarded the Best Presented VCC Finisher as determined by the VCC. Quite a surprise as there were some very nice cars entered. Would I do it again? Definitely, if the budget can stand it! It’s a great amount of fun, especially being able to use the whole width of the road knowing there’s no one coming. Ash had raced cars some years ago and he surprised me with how fast the Volvo could go round corners! It was fun meeting many people over the week and all so very friendly and helpful, especially the organisers. Should you enter? If you like a safe event with a challenge, a bit of fast driving (without being excessive – max speed allowed 130kph) and a wide range of vehicles, then the Targa Time Trials is for you! Kitchen Custodian Gosh aren't the months going by, we are now counting the weeks to Christmas, "It's a bit scary." October has been another reasonably quite month. We had a group in that were doing a tour North cape to the Bluff" they came in for a dinner, was a lovely evening and they had some good stories to tell of the trip. The Natter & noggin (BBQ) was another enjoyable night, it is good to sit and chat with other members. In November we have a couple of functions, an afternoon tea and a morning tea. If any one would like to come along and help we would love to see you. We have a lot of fun and meet some interesting people. November Natter & noggin is going to be our CHRISTMAS dinner. Hopefully Santa won't be to busy and will call in. This is $25. pp. We will need names for this please by Monday 25th November, if you can't get in to put your name down please contact one of the committee members.

MOTORCYCLE REPORT The turnout for the combined run to Linkwater was excellent. At one point it looked as if we may have outnumbered the cars. I stopped counting when it became obvious, we were not going to achieve bragging rights. However, 17 motorcycles plus the backup driver and his co-pilot and several other motorcycle section members in cars was pleasing. Once again we had a good cross section of bikes ranging from 1950’s to 1980’s, it was good to see the two Kawasaki’s present were very nice examples of a marque that you don’t see a lot of and if you ever wondered if the Italians had a flair for style Rob’s moto Guzzi answered that question, if ever a bike looks like it’s going fast sitting on its stand this is it. We had two ladies, one riding and one as a pillion which was a bonus as the attendance of lady members has dropped off for various no doubt valid reasons. Someone came up with a good idea for encouraging our ladies back out on our rides. Perhaps the wives who do not ride could make up a car load. Once aging the new trailer was not required but sooner or later someone will have the honour of having his initials painted on the chassis. Glenn came close having to stop at Foxes Island to tighten up a loose chain guard on the Thunderbird, obviously he hadn’t read the owner’s manual recently which states after every 5 miles stop and tighten all visible nuts and bolts, replacing those that have fallen off since previous check. We welcome some new members to our group. Graeme McClintock is well known to some members as motor restorer and has a collection of motorcycles ranging over a number of years and makes. Ron Perkinson has a Honda GB 400 in excellent original condition. Welcome also their wives Rose and Kathy. A member of the National Executive was in attendance to present a 50-year membership award to Bruce Rumble and several 25 and 35 year badges. Congratulations to all those concerned especially the two motorcycle members Dave Bishell and Glenn Harris both 35 year members. (photos on the next page, thank you to Linda Laing for these. Unfortunately, this run has clashed with a local swap meet being held, some members have expressed an interest to attend and support the swap meet which is fair enough, any events that foster an interest in things rusty and greasy should be encouraged. With this in mind rather than cancel the run we have put the leave time from the park forward to 11.45. We will then head to Picton for lunch at the Cockles Kitchen and Bar, 7 Auckland St.

Sunday December 15th Leave the clubrooms at 11am on short ride returning to the clubrooms for a pot luck lunch at 12.30pm. The clubrooms will be open from 11am so those not going on the ride, ladies, old retired riders etc can gather for the lunch at a time that suits. Tea and coffee supplied, bring anything else you wish to drink and something to put on the pot luck table to share.

Custer's` Last Stand

Custer was a lonely guy who owned a Model A. A car he`d bought to woo his bride - alas she did not stay. With tyres bald and full of rust, the headlights looked askance and when he tried to hurry, it did St Vitus dance. He`d come to town each Saturday from way up in the hills and pay his bills with firewood - to ease the grocer`s chills. A pint he`d drink all by himself while leaning on the bar and thank the landlord quietly and buy his weekly jar. One Sunday came and Monday too - no sign of Custer`s A. The grocer and the Landlord too, were showing great dismay. They sent out John and Billy boy to see if he was well - (the grocer needed firewood to warm his comely Nell). So through the bush bound tracks they went to see where he had gone and found his hut all cold and dark as if he wasn`t home. They pushed the door and walked on in and found to their surprise, poor Custer lying on the bed, a glazed look in his eyes. He must have known his time had come, a note was by his side “Just take me in my Model A on this my final ride. I`ve nowt to pay the final bills - so give the man my car, and cast my ashes to the wind and scatter them afar”. It seemed unfair to take him thus to make his final run, they`d dress him in his Sunday best before they went to town. They looked at him all cold and stiff - the rigor was set in, with odour from his musty clothes, yes, things were looking grim. They stood him in the parlour and tried him to undress. Alas his vest was stuck to him with hairs through from his chest. They pulled and tugged but ‘twas in vain - they worked up quite a sweat. They`d need to find a way to cut the clothing from his chest.

Well, in the shed John found some shears, they`d seen much better days, but bluntness wouldn’t worry Cus` - he wouldn't feel the pain. They clipped and snipped below the vest and slowly cleared the mess. They even lopped a nipple off the poor old buggers` chest. Now standing in the parlour, bare, he really caused dismay. They`d need to find his Sunday Best to send him on his way. They searched the cupboards and the drawers, but no garments lay around 'til tucked up in a corner shelf a silky garment found. They spread it on the table there, it gave them quite a fright. ‘twas, smooth and pink and slippery soft - a nightie for his bride. (She`d left him on the wedding night, this garment left behind. She never more was seen again - his one and only bride.) Well, be it so, they had no choice but use this slinky thing. They hauled it down his now bald chest to cover every thing. This task now done they best make haste - the A, it had dull lights. The challenge now to get to town for Custer's` final ride. They tried with might to push him in the front seat of the car, but rigor it defeated them before they got too far. A rope they slung on yonder branch and hoisted Custer high and dropped him in the dickie seat to say his last goodbye. He stood erect in rigor there - his feet upon the floor. They roped him to the window frame and through the drivers door. As off they went towards the town, the A was down to two, but seemed to know that this last time it needed to get through. The town folk came on every side to see what caused the fuss. Old Custer was still standing there all clad in ladies stuff. This last ride for a lonely man, it wasn`t all that grand. Next Month…. Dec 8th Club Run to Geoff Buick’s place in the Ure Valley Dec 15th Leave the clubrooms at 11am on short ride returning to the clubrooms for a pot luck lunch at 12.30pm. The clubrooms will be open from 11am so those not going on the ride, ladies, old retired riders etc can gather for the lunch at a time that suits.
