May was quite a successful month. The Post Vintage Rally organised by Bryan Abraham went off very well indeed. The weather was sunny and the 23 entrants enjoyed a very pleasant drive. A full report is elsewhere in this issue. Esther has received a bunch of volunteers to assist with events, which is excellent. Thanks to all those who stepped forward. The May club night was very well attended and the members were treated to some videos of Rootes Group participation in 1960’s European rallies. Over the last couple of months the Branch has hired the hall out for seven weddings. The income for these being a great help towards the ongoing maintenance of the clubrooms. The VCC Annual General Meeting will be held in Greymouth this year and for logistical reasons our delegate will not be attending. For this reason the committee decided to send an apology for not attending. Our annual swapmeet is coming up in October and preparations are getting under way with the venue being booked. As usual we will be needing assistance. This event is a big earner for us so please seriously consider being available to help on the day. Contact Trevor Hardy or Sarah Howell to offer your help. On the subject of help required, do not forget that there will be a working bee at the clubrooms on June 26 at 10:00 am to re-cover chairs that are the worse for wear. If you can make it the committee would be very pleased to see you. Finally, if there is someone who was around when the clubrooms were in the planning stage, and can advise on the allowable floor loading, please contact me. Hi everybody. Firstly, a very warm welcome to new members Ivan and Linda Crafts. They have an extremely nice 1981 Leyland Mini 1275 GT. Great to have you along at our May club night, and please, everyone make these two welcome. Of particular interest to me personally is a remit to be presented at the AGM of my former Branch, Bay of Plenty. This is to discuss a name change from Bay of Plenty Vintage Car Club to Bay of Plenty Classic and Vintage Car Club. This is a suggestion frequently put forward in letters to the Editor of Beaded Wheels. I think that the National Body has also discussed this issue at times in the past. The usual howl is “what is a classic car”? How is it defined? The answer is simple. When our movement was originating, names had to be found and categories developed for our vehicles. Initially, the words ‘veteran’ and ‘vintage’ were used. Now these were not new words to the language, but were adapted with meanings related to our vehicles. Subsequently, along came post vintage, then post war, and now P60 and P80. In a similar vein, the word ‘Classic’ can have its own definition within our movement. It can mean whatever we want it to mean. The point behind all this is the perception in the public eye. We need and want to attract new members to our club, and if we need to adopt a name that the public identify with, then so be it. It’s known as marketing, and I believe the sooner the National Body recognise the need for this, the better. I must point out that the views expressed above are mine, and not necessarily those of the management! Esther, our Club Captain, is doing a very good job and has some good innovations in progress. She aim is to raise our profile and make us more visible publicly. To this end, banners will be made so that at our various outings we can fly the flag so to speak. I attend many car shows etc during the year, and most other one make clubs gather their cars together with flags and bunting flying, whereas our members similar events piecemeal and without recognisable affiliation. So, when various car shows come up, such as the recent Ford Day run by the Capri Club, we should arrive together and park our cars with our banners announcing “this is who we are”. And we should use the opportunity to welcome prospective new members. Whanganui Branch have their Annual Rally this Queen’s Birthday weekend. This year, they are trialling online entry registrations. I used this for my entry with payment by Internet Banking; the whole process is simple and straightforward. Their Rally Secretary, Linda O’Keefe, who does a wonderful job by the way, has told me this system has made things so much simpler for her. Perhaps Esther and I will have a chat with her about the possibility of implementation by our Branch. In the time I have been in the Secretarial chair, I have been amazed (and appalled!) at the amount of photocopying that has to be done these days. For example, where once each Branch would receive a large package or two each month with all

the reports from National Office, this is now communicated by email. So for us to retain this correspondence, it must be printed off on a home printer. In other words, the cost of printing has been transferred to the Branch. Additionally, for each committee meeting, our members have to print off the Agenda, and the Minutes of the previous meeting, plus the various reports, to bring along for reference. All at a cost of around 10 cents per sheet. I myself have gone through two ink cartridges in six months at a cost of over $60 each. On top of that I have made several trips into town to have copies made at a cost which is a little cheaper. While these costs are reimbursed by the Branch, they are still expensive. So, the Committee has decided to invest in a printer which will reduce the cost to around 1½ cents each. To this end, we have purchased a Brother printer at a cost of $299 after a discount of $150. It is intended that printing for our monthly committee meetings is all done on this. Similarly, any printing for monthly runs or rallies can be emailed to me by Esther, and I will print them off for her. It’s not going to take us very long and this machine will have paid for itself. Vero Insurance continues to be a help financially to our Branch. We are regarded as an agent by them, and receive commission for any premiums paid by our members. This year to date this amounts to $979, so not an insubstantial amount. Remember, this is not just insurance on your car, but can be on house and contents as well. So, if you take out any insurance with them, ensure you tell them you are a VCC member, and your Branch name. In the words of Bugs Bunny “that’s all folks! For now, anyway. Peter Robinson

Club Captain’s Corner Notices Friday 7 June 2019 ‘Friday Run’ Meet at Feilding railway station car park at 12.45pm. We will be leaving for Kimbolton to be in the street parade and park in the main street. The road will be closed from 1.30pm to around 5.00pm. They are celebrating the new road opening. If you wish to go straight to Kimbolton that is fine, but you need it be there around 1.15pm at the church. Reports Sunday Run on 28 April We had a great turn out of cars. We went to Cafe Fare in Pohangina. There were around 50 people there and we filled the place up. Thank you to all those people that helped out the staff to get the drinks and scones out The PV & PWV rally 6was a great rally with a fine day and great country roads. Had a good turnout of cars. Thank you Brian and Catherine and Carla for all the work that you put in for the rally.
Sunday run for 29 June Meet at the Memorial park at 12.45pm. Please NOTE the change of starting venue and time. We will be leaving at 1.00pm for a cafe run. Sunday 14 July Meet 10.00am Feilding Railway Station. We have been asked to supply some vintage cars for the Apiti volunteer fire brigade. They are celebrating the new upgraded fire station. They will have other fire trucks from different stations and possibly a rescue helicopter and police. There will be activities for children if want bring the grandchildren. There will be a sausage sizzle. More information in the next tourer.

PV: PW: P60: P80 Rally REPORT 1 By Keith and Avis Hughes This year we took our Chevrolet on the Post-Vintage rally. It was one of two 1939 Chevrolets, the other belonging to Brian and Lyn James, and of course both fitted with the powerful, economical, reliable and updated (in 1937) OHV 6-cylinder engines.
We were joined by another 23 odd vehicles, ranging from competitive to a few non-competitive entries. The route went up Pohangina Valley East Road, left into Oroua Valley Road to Apiti, Te Pawapawa Road, Rangiwahia Road, Maungamako Road, Otara Road and SH 1 to Ohingaiti and the Flat Hills cafe. It was a winding, often steep but tar-sealed route, with almost zero traffic, and a brilliant fine day. We followed much of the way, or were followed by, a nice 1935 Ford V8 from Masterton (Brian Billing and Robbie) which performed so well it had to be modified a bit.

Another car that I had never seen before is a 1939 Hillman 14 (Neil Farrer) from Wanganui which looked like it would have been a substantial and expensive car in its day. There was also a 1949 De Soto, looking extremely smart from our man in Hunterville (Peter Wilton), and a 1956 Austin A105 (Ian and Rosalea Lambess) from Masterton, in two-toned lime-green and white.
Post Office newspaper clipping sign? Avis counted them three times and got a substantially different number each time. She eventually put the highest number down thinking that was the most likely to be correct. Another tricky one was finding words with more than four letters made from the McKenzie, one of the names on the War Memorial at Rangiwahia. How many words did people get containing a z? We could only get one – zinc. We wonder too how many people noticed the clue “31Z1 1202” painted in red at the base of the wall of the wooden building across the street from the War Memorial, and clearly facing the direction we were all parked. It is amazing what we see, or do not see, when we are concentrating on something else. Avis reckons she has got Bryan Abraham figured out and can tell when another silent check is due on a rally........ Hmm, maybe she has, maybe she hasn’t. Anyway, for our trouble we won a box of chocolates, and a new clock which will look good in the workshop. The rally was the last of Bryan Abraham’s assignments as Club Captain.
Ian & Roselea Lambess (Masterton) 56 Austin A105 It is essentially an Austin Westminster based car with a 102 hp engine, and I think overdrive. I would imagine it could easily keep up with modern traffic. It looks like a typical English manufactured car which was the backbone of New Zealand’s fleet in the 1950s and 60s, and its grunty engine would today make it a very desirable post-vintage. The difficult questions did not start until after we reached Apiti. How many got the correct number of the letter h in the The Tourer
There has been quite a culture change in the club over the last few years it seems to us. The regular one monthly Sunday “cafe” runs, and occasional mid-month meanders have been very popular and we regularly see people on them who are otherwise never seen on rallies. Bryan’s detailed and well researched written instructions have been a feature of his time as Club Captain. He has successfully enticed cars out of the garage. Our thanks to Bryan, Catherine and Carla for providing a very enjoyable Post Vintage Rally.

PV: PW: P60: P80 Rally REPORT 2 By Sandy and Trevor Hardy After a pleasant early morning coffee and catch-up at the Coach House Museum in Feilding, Club Captain Bryan told us about the Post Vintage run, namely that there was no timing, no unsealed roads and that we should enjoy the scenery, the roads and the company. As usual, Bryan‘s instructions were extremely accurate, complete with toilet stops and petrol stops. There was little chance of getting lost. After leaving Feilding, we travelled down Kimbolton Road to Colyton, then on to Valley Road. At the end of Valley Road we turned on to Pohangina Valley Road before crossing the river and on to Pohangina Valley East Road . Staying on this road, through Totara Reserve, past the Christian camp, the colours of autumn were outstanding, beautiful reds, yellows and stark trees which

made for some lovely photos. Then a right turn to stay on this road that eventually got us on to the Oroua Valley Road and into Apiti township. At the large signage board there were hordes of competitors trying to count the number of h’s in a newspaper cutting. Each time they achieved a different answer; Sandy must have counted almost a dozen times before she decided 42 was the answer. It was from Apiti that the questions and “find the road where the photo was taken” commenced. We came across one of Bryan’s favorites…..the old picket fence trick! ie, how many pickets? After answering some of the questions, a right turn had us heading back along Oroua Valley Road past the Apiti Tavern on to Main Road South, then Te Parapara

road before we came on to Rangiwahia Road, and of course the remains of the township itself. Found a craftily placed picture clue in the window of an old shop, partially hidden behind a parked truck! At the War Memorial we had to find two surnames the same then make up four-letter words from the surname which was McKenzie. Sandy loved this part; she managed at least 8 words, including a 5 letter word. Upon leaving Rangiwahia we headed towards Kimbolton, then turned right into Mangamako Road at Pemberton corner. Interesting place if you have a bit of time to spare. From there we turned right at Otara road. The scenery was spectacular in this area, lots of hills and valleys then, after crossing a beautiful bridge and meeting up with SH1, we turned right then left into our lunch stop at Flat Hills Café. By this time is was after 1pm. Flat Hills Café is home to the most delicious Custard Squares. HIGHLY recommended! As Sandy and I were outside trying to scare off the ducks and geese trying to finish off our meal, Bryan approached us with a very nice Route 66 clock and

a large box of chocolates, our prize for coming first in the Post 60 class! Well worth it. We were to learn later that we had in fact won the Rally overall, a tribute to Sandy and all her hard work. By the time we were ready to leave Flat Hills Café we were the last car to go and decided as we had just had our lunch at 2pm we didn’t need more coffee so ventured back along SH1. A thoroughly enjoyed rally. Fabulous scenery and grateful thanks to Team Abraham - Bryan, Catherine and Carla. Note from Editor: I asked the Hughes and Hardys if they would write an article, hoping for at least one ‘yes’ but got two – must be a real incentive to be competitive as they came 1st and 2nd overall. It is also fitting to have such thorough reports reflect the thoroughness that the Abrahams have brought to every rally and run that they have run over the last three years. Quality is also the mark of the many articles and reports produced by Bryan in the Club Captain’s Corner. Brian, your work has been really appreciated.

PV: PW: P60: P80 Rally REPORT 3 THE RESULTS By the outgoing Club Captain Brian Abraham Just over half of the rally participants opted to complete an answer sheet which was a mixture of questions and silent checks in the format of photographic clues. Because the rally covered four vehicle classification groups, just for a change the decision was taken to spread the prizes around a bit with a 1st prize up for grabs for each vehicle classification group instead of the usual overall 1st, 2nd and 3rd placings.
Post War - Although there were four entrants in this group Dave & Esther Williams were the only PW entrants who chose to be competitive so became the winners with no opposition. They achieved a robust score and had there been another entrant(s) in their group they would have given any contender a good run for their money.
Post Vintage - The winner of this group was Keith & Avis Hughes with Verdon Heath & Viv Spiers (Horowhenua Branch) in a close second place. Next was Brian & Lyn James followed by Brian Billing.

Post60 - There were six competitive entrants in this group. The winner was Trevor & Sandy Hardy Photo 5d with Peter & Ann Robinson in second place followed by Max & Lynne Youle, Robert Wilson & Murray Martin, Elvery & Ada Hunt (Horowhenua Branch) and Brian & Margaret Robinson.
Overall – resorting the results gave an overall winner and runners up: 1st - Trevor & Sandy Hardy 2nd - Keith & Avis Hughes 3rd - Verdon Heath & Viv Spiers 4th – Brian & Lyn James 5th - Peter & Ann Robinson 6th - Dave & Esther Williams Non competitive - Ian & Sarah Howell participated in the rally in their ‘modern’ as a non-competitive entry, but had they entered in a PV / PW / P60 or P80 vintage car then with the very healthy score they achieved they would have rearranged the above results.

A big thank you to all who attended the 2019 PV Rally. A lot of work goes into organising an event such as this and it is really good to see a good attendance and happy people. On this occasion sealed roads, good weather and picturesque countryside all helped make it a successful day. As this was our last event as organisers, we would like to thank everyone who joined us on this rally and who have supported other club outings which we have arranged over the last three years. Manawatu VCC cars by the decade
1920’s 1929 Dodge Senior 6 Landau Sedan Model 2252 By Ian Rowden To learn all you want to know about this car, and a lot more, read John Callesen’s account of its restoration in Beaded Wheels No.236 Feb/Mar 1999. It is a Landau Sedan, 6 cylinder 241cu in 3960cc; 3 speed; wheelbase 120 in; tyres 600 x 19; brakes hydraulic all round; cruising speed 55mph; consumption 18-20mpg. When they went away with their family of four girls John and Judy always used two of the three two-seater vehicles he had restored. He wanted, though, a car which would carry them all, so he selected the Landau from his store of vehicles awaiting restoration. He had bought it in 1988. His story of the six year project is a revelation to anyone who has not restored a vehicle. John and his father Selwyn were assisted by many friends. Aspects which caught my eye included:

• The magnitude of the work involved, such as 300 hours on door handles and escutcheons alone; 60 hours of panel beating on one mudguard photo • The lack of information on missing items and the effort to obtain it. • The unique products identified on the internet and imported from overseas, some made specifically for the car • The number of other items manufactured to fit • The imperfect geometry and asymmetry of the original vehicle • A few lucky breaks • The ingenuity and persistence applied to endless obstacles along the way and the resulting skills learned • The number of specialists and their skills – too many to list here

After six years and 5000 hours of work the restoration was essentially completed at the VCC 50th Anniversary Rally at Christchurch, with the last parts couriered from the Manawatu. The car won a trophy for Best Vintage Car, from 700 Vintage cars that attended. Covering 2000miles with no problems, motoring with speed and power and more importantly it performed as well as John required. It has travelled 12,000 miles since restoration and travelled around Northland. It has done a number of weddings. Judy once had a panicking bride who was running late. Amid the panic the carby flooded and the car refused to start. The bride abandoned the car and headed for a nearby modern. While this was happening Judy pushed the starter and the landau engine fired so Judy and the car resumed normal duty. On another wedding occasion, after the photos when en route to the reception the groom wanted to stop on the way at a pub for a drink with his mates. “An argument ensued.” For many years this car was believed to be the only one of its kind in the world. John now understands that a left hand drive one has been seen somewhere in Scandinavia.

The Callesens’ stable of VCC-eligible cars includes 1912 Clement Bayard - Judy’s car 1918 Cadillac 1925 Dodge utility – Judy’s vehicle 1927 Dodge Coupe 1970 Datsun 1200 coupe. This was the first car which John bought and it is now being restored. A 1913 Newton Bennett tourer is parked in the restoration shed to occupy John when the Datsun is complete. From the early 1900s the two Dodge brothers supplied engines etc to Olds and Ford. In 1914 they made their own vehicles and these included the first all steel bodies in a mass-produced car. The cars were strong and reliable and DB was successful from the start. Both brothers died in 1919. The business performance waned and the two widows sold out to a finance company who on-sold two years later to Walter Chrysler in 1928. In 1933 the Dodge was the fourth highest seller behind its stablemate Plymouth. Production ceased in 1942 to manufacture for the war effort, with the Dodge reputation continuing unblemished.

Targa 2019 Time Trial When: Monday 28th October to Saturday 2nd Nov 2019. Where: Central & Lower/Mid North Island – Refer Draft Event Programme. What & Why: Outstanding opportunity for VCC members to drive iconic North Island roads as a time trial. This is not a race, but rather an exercise in safe, precise driving to maintain a set average speed over closed tarmac stages. (Similar to a regularity trial). It’s also a great opportunity for VCC branches to raise public awareness of the VCC & hopefully attract some new & younger members. VCC ID CARDS RENEWAL APPLICATIONS
Message from Head Office NZVCC Please note that all VCC ID Cards have an expiry. This expiry is upon change of ownership, or 10 years from the issue date. Your vehicle must also be as described on the Card. A Renewal form personalised for each vehicle ID Card is distributed by the National Office to current financial members, approximately 3 months before the expiration. Even if your vehicle has had no changes, this form must be checked, signed and forwarded to your Branch, along with the ID Card (if the photo correctly shows your vehicle in its present state), or three new photos, as stated on the form. Upon receipt at the National Office, the ID Card will be reissued and will be valid for a further 10 years unless there is a change of ownership or major changes to the vehicle during that time. It is compulsory for all National and International VCC Rallies that vehicles entered must have a current valid ID Card.
