Editorial Esmee Rowden
This is my last Tourer as Editor. I want to thank Bruce Hutton for encouraging me to take the role 4 ½ years ago. It has turned out to be a real privilege. I have had a lot of fun meeting many interesting people who have been willing to share their interest / passion for things Vintage. For the people who contributed to the Alphabet series, and more recently the Decade series I have valued talking with you in the preparation of your articles. I want to thank Ian Rowden – my proof reader extraordinaire – as well as the writer of a number of articles when needed by the Editor. John Callesen has also been my ‘go to’ person if I have had an emergency space to fill – thanks John. Best wishes to Stan as he assumes the role of Editor. Esmee Rowden

The swap meet is getting closer, in fact rather than being the daylight at the end of the tunnel, it’s actually a train with headlight blazing coming the other way and unless action is taken now, we will be run down. There have not yet been enough volunteers to help on the day, which is a pretty poor show. Members don’t seem to have cottoned on that the swap meet is held for their benefit, and without it the Branch would be seriously financially compromised. So, please “digit extactus” and call either the swap meet coordinators or Sarah Howell to add your name to the little list. This event does NOT run on its own or on some sort of autoplilot. Esther Williams is doing a sterling job organising events. She has a plan in place for the November club night, so watch this space. As no-one has come forward to take on the role as editor, I have decided to do it myself, at least until the next AGM. So look out for a new-look Tourer from October. September Club night will be the traditional visit to Central Hawkes Bay with a combined meeting with that branch. The venue is the Dannevirke Citizens and Services Club, Queen Street, Dannevirke. Meet at 6:00pm. The price for the meal is $24 pp and they need to know the numbers attending so if you are going please advise Esther Williams ASAP!! Secretary’s Scribbles Peter Robinson
By the time this edition of Tourer reaches you, one of the more important happenings on the National calendar will have been and gone. This of course, is the Daffodil Day event. I only hope that our Branch performed well. This is a significant event initiated by our national body for several reasons. As well as the obvious one of a fundraiser for the Cancer Society – we probably all know of someone, a friend, maybe a family member, who has suffered from some form of this insidious disease - the day is also one we can use to showcase our hobby and interest to the general public. We need to heighten public interest, and by so doing lead to the continued preservation of New Zealand’s motoring heritage, and the continued wellbeing of our movement. Happily, we have a replacement editor for Tourer. Our chairman, Stan, has put his hand up to take the reins of our monthly newsletter, and the committee has unanimously appointed him to the position. Stan has previous experience as editor of the Wellington Branch newsletter, so we await his first issue with anticipation. On behalf of the membership Stan, I would like to thank you for taking on this most important role. On the issue of communication, I am currently in the midst of a time consuming operation. This involves the updating of the email address register we have on file. There are two reasons this is happening. Firstly, National Office has requested this be looked at in the light of the demise of the clear.net.nz addresses. Those of you who had that provider will have already had a phone call from me to obtain your new address. Secondly, emailing is a very convenient way to get a message to you, and both Esther, as Club Captain, and myself, have been, and will be using this means to remind you of upcoming events, and as a means of keeping you informed. In addition, the membership list that National Office provide us with each year has many gaps in the email address area, so I will be contacting each of you where that information is missing. And for every new or altered address I get, I have then to enter the details on to not one, but three membership lists on the computer. So, as I said, very time consuming. Now, should you not wish to be emailed, please let me know, and I will not list you. Similarly, if you are on the “confidential” list, there will be no emails sent unless you request otherwise. Bear in mind that emails are sent out in the “BCC” section, so no other recipient will be able to see what your address is. That’s enough from me, stay happy, stay safe. Cheers, Peter.

A friend of mine, David Fricker who lives in Palmerston North used to remember Old Mrs Tuohy driving around in it in the early 1970’s. I bought it about 11 years ago from Don Dennis, a Palmerston North panel beater who got it from the PNVCC after Mrs Tuohy died. Had it for a couple of years, then sold it to Al Dawson, the car collector/hot rodder/musician in Rotorua. He sold it to Ralph Wright, a well known hot rodder from Pukekohe. Cook Sestercentennial Rally Gisborne, Labour Weekend 2019
Dear Branch Secretaries, Please advise your members through your newsletter of the upcoming Cook Sestercentennial Rally to be held in Gisborne at Labour Weekend (October 25-28) commemorating 250 years since Captain James Cook sighted New Zealand in October 1769 (see attachment). This run will be the basis of the Hawke’s Bay Branch Annual Safari who will be responsible for the entry forms. Note that there are two starting points for the rally on the Friday (October 25), one from from Napier organised by the Hawke’s Bay branch and one from Opotiki organised by the Eastern Bay of Plenty branch. Gisborne branch will organise the Saturday and Sunday runs. All inquiries should be directed to the Hawke’s Bay branch. weather to Masonic Cafe. We had a lovely lunch of roast ham, roast vegetables etc. For dessert we had a very nice slice of cheese cake. The 15 August mid week run to Toyota was very successful. We had 35 people come. We split up in 2 groups with Mark McDowell the Warehouse Manager taking one group and Ryan Fitzpatrick Outward Freight Team Leader taking the other group. It was very informative and a very big operation there. The parts department is the distribution centre for the whole of New Zealand. We then went to Rendezvous Cafe for coffee and cake afternoon tea.

1900’s
1910 Model 20 Hupmobile Runabout
By Karl Gilchrist I purchased my 1910 Model 20 Hupmobile Runabout in 2008 (via Beaded Wheels) from Richard Hadfield in Auckland. Richard had acquired a collection of Hupmobile parts and with the help of the late Len Woodgate had performed an immaculate (and to judge by the receipts I saw expensive) restoration. Hupmobile was formed by Robert Hupp in 1908. Hupp had worked for both Regal and Ford before branching out on his own. Henry Ford’s words when seeing the Model 20 prototype for the first time were – “Bobby has built a fine car for the price. If ours (the Model T) is as good, we will be doing well.“ The Model 20, named for the 20hp it produced (it really only produced 16.9hp but 20hp sold more cars) was seen as a fast reliable easy to start vehicle. The first Police car in Detroit was a Model 20. As was the trend at the time the car was introduced with a 600-mile advertising endurance run through snow drifts

ending in Buffalo New York. In 1911 a Model 20 circumnavigated the Globe on another advertising trip. The car put on 48000 trouble free miles (apart from a broken rear axle in Japan fixed on the roadside by re-machining a rickshaw axle). They came to New Zealand and even Palmerston North admiring the magnificent Manewatua Gorge (sic). The Model 20 is powered by an 1800 four-cylinder fixed head engine with two connected cylinder blocks. Cooling is by thermosiphon and ignition by Bosch HT magneto. Transmission is two speed selective (Slow and slower) and reverse through a multidisc oil bath clutch. Top speed is 40 mph wind and slope assisted. When I got the car, it was running a Holley NH carb on a butchered inlet manifold. The original Breeze carburettor was in the words of Richard Hadfield unobtainable and NBG (no bloody good). However, being as I am, I managed to obtain the correct H3 Breeze carb (from Portugal) which was sent to Stan Howe in Montana who is the acknowledged world expert on Brass carb restoration. Breeze carbs have not been made since 1913 but Stan had three on his bench when mine was there. The complex (and no doubt inefficient) inlet manifold was recast and we are now back to original. Since buying the car I have trolled the internet and have accumulated an original Owner’s Manual and all the original advertising material from 1910 as well as books (signed by the Drivers) detailing the Buffalo Tour in 1908/1909 and the World Tour in 1911. I also have the original Carburettor and Bosch Magneto manuals for 1910 (Did someone call me **** retentive!) Bumble (from its bright yellow colour -selected by Richard’s wife on the way to the painter off a passing late model Fiat) is driven frequently in summer. I take her to work and even do house calls in her. Patients like her but not the oil slick on their drive. Having owned both a 1913 Model T and the Hupp at the same time I am able to compare them. In my opinion the Hupp is lighter more zippy, cuter and much sassier. The T is stronger, more solid and dependable and will climb hills effortlessly that the Hupp would crawl up. In summary the Hupp is a gorgeous toy the T is a functional vehicle. But it was the T I sold when I rationalised my veteran collection. Despite the 48000-mile trouble free circumnavigation in 1911 my mechanical experiences have not been as good. Currently the engine is out with a suspected big end bearing failure. Less than five hundred miles ago we discovered a bent camshaft when we sheared off the magneto drive on the end of the camshaft. Efforts to straighten it resulted in two (short) camshafts! A new camshaft was made and ground. On strip-down we discovered that the nuts on the end of the rods were finger tight (A lucky save). Also that the clutch was missing several thrust washers. The bearings looked good, so the source of the recent bearing failure is still a mystery. Thank Goodness for Graeme Miller!!! (PS since writing this Karl has heard back from Graeme Miller - the Hupmobille Bearings and crank are fine; did have a slightly loose flywheel which should be an easy (and cheap thank goodness) fix.)

My Great Grandfather had a slightly later Model N Hupp which I have just heard has been restored in Auckland. My Father and I brought my Hupp together before he died. It is a glorious little car. I meet up with Richard Hadfield each Art Deco and every year he tells me of all the cars he has sold the Hupp is the only one he regrets selling and I understand why! I don’t believe I could ever sell it other than perhaps to enable the return of my Great Grandfathers Model N Hupmobile and/or my Father’s 1938 Triumph Dolomite to our family (should I be lucky enough to ever have the opportunity). And even then, it would be with great regret. People tell me that when they see me driving it, I have a smile from ear to ear and I guess that’s what it’s all about.

North Cape to Bluff TOUR (Taumarunui to Wanganui) Have you considered joining the North Cape to Bluff tour in September/October? Rob Eason (’54 Ford Customline) and I (’39 Chevrolet) are planning to travel to Taumaranui on Tuesday October 1st. We would then drive with the group through the “Forgotten” highway 43 to Stratford, then to Wanganui, and back to Palmerston North on Friday October 4th. It would be good to have a few others join this relatively undemanding mini-tour, including some pre-1932 vintage cars. You can, of course, join or leave the tour at any point. VCC Facebook page The Vintage Car Club’s facebook page is now two years old and has over 1500 followers. It has interesting stories, posts on events and photos of vintage and classic vehicle activities from around New Zealand and the world. One of the photo posts on the last Irishman Rally achieved a reach of 8,253 people. 1. For those who already have a facebook account: Go to the VCC facebook page and LIKE it. Posts will then appear in YOUR facebook stream and you can share them with your friends 2. For those who don’t have a facebook page or don’t want to set up an account: type in the link below and then save it in bookmarks in your internet browser. You will then have easy access to the page whenever you want to see the latest posts. To access the Club facebook page go to: https://www.facebook.com/vintagecarclubofnewzealand/ or type Vintage Car Club of New Zealand into facebook search. Our facebook page includes notifications of upcoming events but it’s not a buy, sell and exchange page. There are other avenues for that information. It would be great if you could email us pictures and include a couple of words about the photo from your Branch events or rallies you are attending around the country. Good Afternoon Branch Secretaries At our AGM held in Greymouth last weekend, I informed delegates of a new event happening in the North Island at Anzac Weekend 2020. (Flyers are with Secretary Peter Robinson).
A FEW MORE DETAILS:
DATE 24 - 26 April 2020 The date for the Highland Fling was altered several times by the organizing committee before settling on late Autumn next year. Originally the ‘Fling’ was planned for Queen’s Birthday, however, the date was changed for different reasons. REASONS a) Wanganui Branch has their annual Rally at Queen’s Birthday b) The country roads and private farms we plan to travel on in June could be heavily bogged in, and therefore, more time would be spent towing vehicles out of the mud than actual motoring c) To date, this event has already gained national momentum with many South Island members indicating they are keen to attend the Highland Fling as well as the Irishman Creek Rally, therefore it would not be possible for them to participate in both events if the ‘Fling’ was held at Queens Birthday. LOCATION The chosen location for the first event will be the highlands of Taihape/Upper Rangitikei area. We selected this region of the North Island because Alastair Jones (BOP Member) who is spearheading this Rally, has a great deal of knowledge and experience ‘under his belt’ traveling off-road in and around Taihape/ Waiurou from his many years as a Major serving in the NZ Army. RULES OF ENTRY Veteran and Vintage vehicles HOST BRANCH The Bay of Plenty Branch will host the inaugural ‘Highland Frolic,’ and I am optimistic with the right publicity and marketing, another branch in the North Island will volunteer to host the Frolic in 2021. Therefore 1) the ‘Highland Fling WILL NOT necessarily be held every year in the Taihape region in April, and 2) be hosted by the BOP branch.
