As we all know, this year has brought this branch more challenges than was needed. Covid-19 created changes in the way life and clubs were conducted for a while but by far the biggest challenge was in relation to several changes in committee. Despite this the club has had a great year with some very good events organised by committee and other loyal members. As I have mentioned before, the swapmeet was again very successful with the participation of many. Runs were very well attended as were working bees. Maintenance and immediate necessary repairs were also carried out on the verandah floor. Many thanks to our volunteers for their commitment. A highlight for our branch was the formal presentation of certificates and badges to not only one but three of our club members who had given 50 years of continued membership. National President, Diane Quarrie, made the presentations to Bob Pettigrew, Keith Maegaard and Gary Millar at a very well attended function held at the Grove on 2nd May. Gary Millar was also made a Life Member of the Manawatu Branch at the same time. Our congratulations go to each of these members for their dedication to this club. One of the disappointing outcomes of this year is the deepening divide caused by the second attempt to gather support for the sale of our one big asset - the Grove. The resulting immediate stand-down of the executive committee when the vote was too close meant that a further election of officers was undertaken. Unfortunately the then elected Chairman and Secretary resigned after a few short months which left the existing committee scrambling to keep the club running. Both these situations have created an enormous amount of confusion and work for those who have been left to try and reunite members under such distressing circumstances. Another disappointment was the lack of attendance at club nights despite their being very interesting speakers giving their time and travel. This leads me to wonder whether members still have an interest in this aspect of club activity. At this point the committee and I have worked very hard to keep the club running without further disruption. I reiterate this is a club for all who have a love of vehicles be they Vintage Truck, Motorcycles, Veterans, Vintage or the relatively modern vehicle which is over 30 years old. We need your input whether it be on committee, taking responsibility for creating the odd run or two, or helping out in the many other ways that are needed for the successful continuation of Vintage and Classic motoring in the Manawatu. In conclusion please don’t forget that the Manawatu Branch is due to celebrate its 60 years of existence next year. Brian Halcox, Acting Chairman. Page 5

Further to the above (previous page). Our AGM proved to be disappointing with no executive elected. It is obvious members are not interested in continuing with the club in its present form. This therefore has necessitated a further meeting being called to determine the way forward for the club and its assets. Before this meeting can be called we will need the chartered accountants report in order to verify that our accounts are in order. You will be advised by email the date of such meeting. If you are at all interested in the Manawatu Vintage Car club’s future your attendance will be essential. Brian Halcox.

I would like to thank everyone for the support of the few years I have been doing Club Captain. I have really enjoyed doing the runs and having a great response from all MEMBERS. As you will know we had no one come forward to fill the positions on the committee. So, it is with a heavy heart that we will be cancelling all June’s runs, this includes the Twilight rally. I would love to see the social side of the club continue. If anyone would like to take up this position, I am only too willing to help. On a lighter note we had a great turn out of cars for the PV, PWV, P60, P80 Rally - there were 32 cars all totalled. We had cars from Wellington to Wanganui branches attending the rally. Sunday run to Allen and Justin Mills Museum was well attended - we had 18 cars come on the run. This just shows that there is interest in the social side of the Club and wanting to get out in our cars, so please do not let this stop. Thank you again, Esther

Manawatu VCC Year End Accounts At the club AGM I attempted to point out a few concerns relating to the Clubs Year End Accounts but was prevented from doing so. So I will clarify what I wanted to say here. Firstly - I DO NOT believe there has been any impropriety in relation to the clubs finances. My issue with the accounts is that they are presented in a manner that is confusing and difficult to interpret. For example, The Notes to the Financial Statements states that “All transactions in the Statement of Financial Performance are reported using the accrual basis of accounting” however the total income figure in the Statement of Financial Performance is a Cash basis figure. The Statement of Financial Position under Current Liabilities has a Provision for Advance Hall Payments of $11320. See page 7 of the Notes to the Financial Statements for an explanation of what a provision is. Also another member present asked a question concerning depreciation which unfortunately was unable to be explained. The point I want to make is that due to the difficulty in interpreting these accounts, the accounts and the supporting documents should be passed to a chartered accountant so that the figures can be verified and the statements restructured. The opening day of duck-shooting season was the occasion of the Manawatu Branch PV rally. At least 30 drivers with their cars and assorted navigators from the Manawatu, Horowhenua, Wellington, Wairarapa and Wanganui branches, together with two light commercial vehicles, were at the clubrooms at 9 a.m. ready to go. The planned route was direct to Pahiatua over the track, then to Pongaroa for lunch, and later to Dannevirke for afternoon tea via Weber, all of it on good, often recently re-sealed roads. It was pleasant driving through the cool but sunny countryside, knowing that we were not missing much by not being with the duck-shooters, although the beauty of the Clematis festooned bush through the Makuri Gorge was tempered by the knowledge that Clematis vitalba (Old Man’s Beard) is probably one of the worst noxious weeds in NZ. We caught up with an Austin A35 going up the hill behind Makuri village, and had plenty of time to contemplate the large areas of pastureland recently planted in seedling pines at the top of the hill. These are probably a permanent cover crop for ultimately, regenerating native bush being grown for the carbon credits. Lunch at the Pongaroa pub was good, but Robert Wilson and Murray Martin almost missed out after spending a long time sightseeing in their recently refurbished 1934 Austin. Other interesting cars were a Riley Elf with a grand-daughter dressed in a colourful red and black steam punk outfit, and a 1935 Packard purchased from the Williamson family at Cheltenham, and originally imported by one of the Hannahs of shoe-store fame. There was also a 1952 A90 Atlantic (very nice!) and a Morris Marina (when did you last see one of those?), and a couple of 1950s Saabs. The winners were selected on the basis of answers to questions accumulated on the way. Steve Bright (PV), Rob Eason (PWV), Tim Ross (P60), and Stan Garmonsway (P80) took away the prizes. It was a good day out thanks to Esther. Hmmm, I think we are going to miss her as Club Captain. Page 8

Approximately 40 members attended a gathering at the Club Rooms on Sunday 2nd May 2021 to witness Dianne Quarrie present 50 year badges to Keith Maegaard, Gary Millar and Bob Pettigrew. Keith, supported by his wife Natalie, showed some emotion as he received badge number 408. He joined in 1971 with his Ford A at the age of 29. A highlight in his motoring career was winning the 2000 International Rally with a zero score, the only person to do so. Gary, with Marion in support, received Badge 406. He joined the club in 1970 as a 21 year old with a 1929 Nash and a 1929 Pontiac. These cars as most people know are still under restoration. Gary has had many roles in the club, notably as Custodian, Librarian and involved in the Parts Shed and still is. In recognition of his outstanding service to the Club, he was also awarded Life Membership in the Branch. Bob Pettigrew received Badge Number 407. He joined at age 32 years in 1970 with his 1909 Britton and a 1919 Ford T. He added the Ford A which he has motored extensively over the years. His Britton, which he restored, was a local car which he recovered from the Pohangina Valley. Dianne Quarrie took the opportunity to remind the Club that we are celebrating 75 years, nationally, with an event to be held in Christchurch. The National Office will also be looking to replace their earthquake damaged office, and there are also plans to look into modernising our Club Logo. The day ended with cake cutting and afternoon tea. Bill Turner Page 11

On the 2nd May 2021, following the 50 year service presentations, in recognition of his service to the branch, Gary Millar was awarded Life Membership in the branch. Usually involved in several roles at the same time, Gary is well known within the branch for his genuine manner and helpfulness. He joined the Manawatu Branch in September 1970 and by February 1971 he had agreed to be included in the duty roster for the Easter Rally. Gary worked on a variety of tasks including the stonework when the clubhouse was being built, and has contributed almost continuous service to the branch in a number of capacities since 1978. He took on the role of Branch Librarian in April 1978 and continues to hold that office along with other duties. In June 1991 Gary volunteered to add the role of custodian to his duties and he continues to hold that office. For a decade or so up until about 15 years ago Gary also managed the hire of the hall, taking all of the bookings and liaising with clients. This was a major task which contributed to branch revenue but Vice Chairman (& Actg Chairman) Brian Halcox making because of its demands, the Life Membership presentation to Gary. at his request this was outsourced to a commercial business. He was on the Parts Committee from April 2004 until April 2007 and has been in sole charge of the Parts Shed from 2011 to date. His apparent magnetic fingers do not like to let too much go to the scrap bin. Gary is ever present at the branch and his commitment over such a long period has undoubtedly been a factor in the slow restoration of his 1929 Pontiac which has been a work in progress for many many years and is still not on the road. As a result of not having it on the road he has often participated in events by assisting other members by navigating for them on rallies and runs. Page 15

Thirty something people decided take the trip over the Saddle Road to inspect in person what had been promised to be a remarkably interesting museum - and it really did prove to be just that. In an extremely large ‘shed’ Allan and Justin Mills had three Kenworth trucks parked up in the centre - surrounded by motorcycles, bowser pumps, motoring memorabilia and lots more. It is a ‘man-cave’ to die for with everything impeccably presented.

The Roper steam velocipede was a steam-powered velocipede built by inventor Sylvester H. Roper of Roxbury, Boston, Massachusetts, between 1867 & 1869. It is one of three machines which have been called the first motorcycle, along with the Michaux-Perreaux steam velocipede, also dated 1867 - 1869, and the 1885 Daimler Reitwagen. There is disagreement as to whether the Roper or the Michaux-Perreaux came first. The Reitwagen came many years later than the two steam cycles, but it is often labelled as the "first motorcycle" because there is doubt by some experts as to whether a steam cycle should meet the definition of a motorcycle. After his initial prototype of the late 1860s, Roper built a new and revised version in 1894, based on the then state of the art safety bicycle frame type. There are competing claims for the title of first motorcycle, depending on whether a steam motorcycle, or only one with an internal combustion engine, counts as a true motorcycle. The Oxford English Dictionary definition of a motorcycle requires an internal combustion engine whereas the Encyclopædia Britannica defines a motorcycle as, "any two-wheeled or, less commonly, three-wheeled motor vehicle, usually propelled by an internal-combustion engine." There is also uncertainty as to which of the two earliest steam motorcycles, the Roper or the Michaux-Perreaux, was built first. The example on display at Allan and Justin Mills’ shed (which is a replica) was in production between 1884 & 1896. Engine

Although Sylvester Roper took out a number of patents for firearms, industrial machinery and other inventions, he did not obtain patents for any of his steam cycles or cars. Page 18

Roper's first velocipede of 1867 - 1869 used a purpose built frame rather than adapting an existing velocipede frame by retrofitting a steam engine, but one contemporary newspaper account does assert that Roper repurposed a velocipede frame and used a hickory wood frame built by the Hanlon Brothers, who made and demonstrated boneshakers at fairs and circuses, although the Smithsonian's Roper has an iron frame. Roper was asked to demonstrate his 'self propeller' at the Charles River velodrome, a banked concrete bicycle racing track, where he first paced the racing cyclists, then raced professional rider Nat Butler, easily outpacing the bicyclists with timed laps at around 30 mph (120.2sec/mile on the 1/3mile track). He was then encouraged to give a demonstration of maximum speed, and was timed at over 40 mph, when a 'sudden pallor' was seen on his face, and his machine wobbled to a stop, Roper falling off his cycle. He died of 'natural causes', at age 72 at the track-side.

Originally this rally was meant to take place in 2020 but the lovely COVID forced the postponement to this year so with accommodation transferred and entries already in it was time to head off to the Inaugural Fling!! Friday 23rd April With the Car packed fuel tank full leave Palmy and head towards Bulls for lunch at Mum & Dads but just south of Sanson I receive a phone call from the South Island troop that one of their troopers has a head gasket issue so we meet up in Sanson and the offending Model A is redirected to Feilding for a bottle of Cemi Weld and off to lunch I go. Leaving my lunch stop (or trying to) the SI troop consisting of one Rolls Royce and six Ford A’s go past on their way to Turakina for a rendezvous with twenty cars for a scenic back road drive up Turakina Valley to the waterfall for an afternoon tea stop and regroup. Just after the Falls we turned into Pohonui Road to give them some idea of the sort of country side that we will be travelling through for the next few days. After a spirited drive to the end of the road with one of the SI Ford A’s behind me I stopped at the end of the road and asked him what he thought!! The first word we can’t print but the second was Fantastic!!! Through to Mataroa school next where I sent everyone on their way to Taihape but I had to detour through the town to set up the field test for Sunday afternoon. I had dun a rekkie 14 months ago to sort out where we were going to have the field test but my first opinion for a slalom course through some trees proved to be a fail with long wet grass on a slope providing too much of a test of traction. The car was stationary and the Speedo was reading 10mph!!! So plan B was implemented and we set up in a slightly flatter paddock!! Off to Taihape next to settle into our salubrious accommodation at Taihape Motels and then down to the Gretna Hotel to get rally packs and a well-deserved beer or two. Page 20

Day one!! 7:30 drivers briefing out front of the Gretna on Hautapu Street started with some spirited bagpipes to set the mood for the rally then a briefing from Alastair Jones before an 8am start! With very light drizzle falling all 105 cars 104 vintage and one Veteran set off inland towards Moawhango for our first stop at the Collie Club for morning tea. After leaving we set off up the Taihape/Napier road for 18 miles of Tar-seal before turning right into Kelly Road - well actually it is the entrance to Kelly Land Company farm. This is what we came for!!! Off road tracks!! Evening started out well with some fantastic farm tracks and good old Taihape scenery eventually ending up in a nice grassy paddock looking up at a rim rock hill with the track winding its way up the side. The real fun started after the first car made it up the initial part of the hill with no problems. The next few victims failed one so badly he managed to get himself stuck in the water table!! So time to shod the rear wheels with chains!! This was a first for us so time to line up for our turn to tackle the grassy slope but not before hooking up Bill Turner on a tow rope to “assist him” up the hill, this was going fantastically till we approached the hairpin corner where two Model A’s had taken the corner too tight and managed to loose traction and were cast!! With some intervention (lots of grunting) they were on their way next it was our turn to loose traction this is where I found out tyre chains are great for digging holes!! So we both back up to some slightly flatter ground and off we go again!! Further on up the slope the conditions improved so I detached Bills car and we both headed to the top of the mighty hill approximately 850m up and waited for our navigators who we had left behind to catch a lift up the hill with the next car. Navigators retrieved photos taken of the cars still at the bottom who looked like ants and off through the next farm this was slightly easier driving but still spectacular!! Tar-seal beckoned and a short drive to a fantastic lunch put on by the Pukeokahu community. The afternoon run was fairly straight forward with a nice gravel road taking us across to Mokai road then up to the now disused Gravity Canyon Bungy site and the 80 metre deep canyon. Page 21

Once the sights had been taken in we headed back towards Taihape but instead of going down Spooners Hill Road (old SH1) we went right heading north then took a left into Paengaroa Road. This is a nice winding gravel road that comes out about 15km north of Taihape so it was a quick blast down the road for the end of the first day of the Highland Fling!! Day 2 ANZAC Day!! 7:30 am for briefing!! 8am start and not wanting to be too far back in the pack we got going quickly!! North out of town via a couple of back streets onto SH1 then 2.5 miles from the start left into Pukenua Road this was a fantastic road tight winding gravel then an extreme tight right turn onto Ridge road. We were meant to be going left but the paper road we were going to use was impassable so a redirection was needed last minute! Ridge Road took us north to Mataroa then we had another quick blast down SH1 to just over the top of the Mangawekea deviation then right into Manui Road and what a road it was!!! Tighter and more fun than the one before!!! Coming out just south of Mangawekea head north with a quick detour through the old Main Street then right off SH1 down over the old swing bridge with a new bridge being constructed next to it then follow the Rangitikei river north turning inland to our morning tea stop at a huge asparagus farm. Pit stop over and nearly being taken out by a rampant Model A on a blind corner on the driveway out of the farm heading north again to find our next paper road! The road was found with a very concerned farmer talking to the car in front now my turn! The censored statement from the Farmer goes like this: 400 meters round that corner it’s turns into a ....... bog I have a 4wd Ute and I wouldn’t go through you guys have no ........ chance of making it through!!! Well he was sort of correct. Yep it was boggy, actually very slippery. We were passengers at 10mph - the car had a mind of its own!! Once through this we stopped on a very grassy section and before us was an incline with thick wet grass and two cars going nowhere! With some additional manpower they made it to the top so at this point we decided to put the chains on again this proved a bit more challenging today as the ground was not flat and very slippery!! Chains fitted then we turn to the Model T behind us ‘do you have Page 22

chains’ - ‘no’ was the reply so hook up the tow rope and off up the slippery rutted potholed hill we went!! Amazing the difference with the chains it gives tractor type grip. Disconnect the T at the top of the hill and have a pleasant drive over the paper road to the start of the gravel where we stop to remove the chains under a very old Council sign saying Well the Farmer and the sign were WRONG!! The rest of the drive back to Taihape for lunch was far less adventurous but still on some good gravel roads. Lunch at the Gretna Hotel was a hurried affair as Ray and I had to get out to Mataroa to finish setting up the field tests! Slalom and Cloverleaf set up we are ready to go! Within 10 minutes we had our first victim turn up and it was all go for the next couple of hours and to add to the fun Ray repurposed the Slalom course after every one had a turn to ever decreasing circles this proved to be a huge hit with everyone!! The only casualty was the Model T truck that collapsed a wheel right in front of me. Time to pack up and head back to town sort the results and off to the Gretna for dinner and prize giving with a few beers thrown in for good measure! Monday morning it was an easy drive home with very little traffic 381 miles in total. Highland Fling 2021 was over - bring on 2022!!

1960 Humber 80 - Series IIIA - NZ assembled by Todd Motors
I am looking for the Number Plate Lighting Unit which is installed on the boot lid above the number plate. Total length is 506mm. Distance between the mounting studs is 412mm. I’m trying to help my step father Graham Gordon. He used to have one of the biggest new and used BMC car parts in Auckland for the past 50 years. Graham is now retired and still has an enormous quantity of valuable parts, I have discussed with Graham and we are looking for a group/club or a few people who could be interested in sheds full of parts and a few classic cars that are still complete for a fair price. It would be a shame to see what he has left to end up rusting away. We are hoping that you and your association could put the word out there to save these parts. There is a time issue as I can only help Graham for a while. I have many more pictures and there is much more that I have not mentioned. It would be good to have serious people come around and have a look. Graham still knows mostly what he has but he can’t leave the house easily to show you, so hopefully you know what you are looking at. There is a: Wolseley 1660 - 1962 approximately. Motor 1622 and the car was going when parked in the shed. Wolseley 680 overhead cam 6 cylinder - was going when parked in the shed. A60 station wagon – 1800 motor which needs repairs. 5 speed gearbox. Brand new V8 Perkins Short Block out of a Austin Mastiff truck.
