A hurried chairman’s chat tonight as Dennis Milne and I in the ’15 Dodge along with John Callesen in the Cadillac are off to the National Veteran Rally in Gore tomorrow on the 9th of October (or bust) and we’ll be back into Palmy on the 28th. This is a pretty big tour and will be a real test for driver and car I think. We’ll get some pictures to show at the next club night. I have been talking with our good club captains and Esther and I think Cliff are keen to make club-nights and the club runs a bit more fun. The club runs are already going along very well and we have identified a lot more interesting places to visit. Summer will be a time of picnic runs. We’ll keep the costs down on these so most of them will be along the lines of bring your own lunch and a thermos. We won’t be covering big distances but will be having a little explore of the places we visit. Clubnights will be shorter and probably focussed more on social interaction. Surprisingly, the public turnout at the swapmeet was excellent and I believe takings were up by 98 dollars from last year! So CONGRATULATIONS to Sarah Howell and her team for the excellent effort they have made. The Feilding facility is booked for next year. Keep those submissions re the clubrooms coming in. Those in favour of keeping the rooms seem to want to do this for reasons of history and emotional attachment to the rooms and this is perfectly understandable. We have put a lot of effort in to the rooms to date. However, maintenance of the building is becoming increasingly expensive. About 14 years ago I set up the wedding hire business to fund the impending short fall of income. This has grown and now brings in a substantial income (about $8500 net last year). Some claim that between the swap-meet and the hall hire we are operating at a very good profit ,,, we are not. Over the years since the rooms were built the bank balance has built at about $8000 pa over a 5-8 year cycle. Subsequently, this has been all used in major repairs and maintenance of the building. Now at 40 years old the building is becoming more expensive to maintain. (See the reprint of the estimated costings that I have put together with Cliff and Rob). So, when you come the SGM in November carefully consider if and why you want to retain the clubrooms, to do so, the committee and members will have to commit a lot of time to maintenance and working bees and our bank balance will again be close to 0 or in overdraft. In spite of the uncertainty over whether it could proceed, the Swapmeet was a great success. We must be thankful for the excellent work of Sarah Howell and her band of helpers. The Swapmeet probably has the widest community appeal and provides our movement’s best publicity, with visitors from far and wide. The New Zealand elections are over, though not finalised, and we look forward to our own voting in November on our premises at The Grove. Your attendance is vital to get the best possible outcome, a strong vote one way or the other. The Committee has received no more submissions during the last month nor any queries. If you have either, please email me. I received one email which surprised me, condemning apparent threats that if the decision goes the wrong way then a new committee must be elected. At the SGM in August the “Five Proposers to Sell” offered to serve on the Committee only on that basis. That was clearly stated. Since no-one else was nominated for these positions, had the five not offered, the Branch would probably now be winding itself up. My brief experience as Secretary has been that the hire business is a pain in the arse and that any car club should steer clear of it. By selling the Grove and reducing the workload we may expect more volunteers to stand for the Committee leadership. Otherwise…. Ian Rowden, Secretary.

We had a few cars out for the Sunday run on 18th October. There was a lot of other car runs on the same day which meant we had only a few cars there. It was a beautiful day with lots of snow on the ranges.

We have been asked to supply cars for a car display at Caccia Birch 125th Jubilee. Meet at Caccia Birch before 12.30pm so we can the cars parked. It would be good to have a lot of cars there. You are welcome to bring a picnic with you. There will be food stalls, a lot entertainment, also different stalls like weaving etc. You will be able to go thru the house and we will be given a cuppa and biscuits. If you wish to dress up in costume of the era of your car you are welcome too. It sounds like a great day out. 14th November 2020

Dear Committee I've just read the Tourer and the article on the clubrooms. Under the heading Where to from here? it states "if a new committee cannot be formed then the VCC NZ national management committee will sell the clubrooms and disperse the funds to other branches". I'm not sure who put this article together but this is completely incorrect and frankly I am disappointed to see it in print as if it is a fact. If enough of a committee cannot be formed, then the branch members would have to vote to wind up the branch (the process is set out in your branch constitution) and decide where the funds would go (also as set out in your branch constitution). It is nothing to do with the national management committee although we would of course assist in any way to avoid that situation occurring. Please make sure that this is corrected at your meeting and also in the next Tourer so that members are not under any misapprehension as to what could happen if that occurred. As explained above in the VCC President's email to our Branch, the last issue of the Tourer was incorrect in stating that in the absence of a Branch committee the NZVCC management committee will sell our premises and distribute the proceeds. The Club (national body) has no such powers. The powers rest with the Branch in General Meeting. Her email makes this clear. The proposers to sell the property regret the error and wish to emphasise that the proposal to sell is intended to reduce the burden of office so that a full committee will be elected. The wedding hire is not losing money but the proceeds have always been spent primarily on hall maintenance and not on subsidising Branch activities as intended. As a result the Branch levy is amongst the highest in the Club. Of most importance, the Hall is now seldom used for Branch activities. If the Branch through the November Special General Meeting decides to sell then the present committee will continue. If not, the Proposers will resign immediately, in line with their statement to the August SGM that this was a condition of their offering to fill the vacancies on the Committee. Clubrooms Maintenance The estimated costings are split into materials, approximate labour hours needed to complete the job. These estimates of hours may be low more if working bees are to be used to complete the work. The labour cost is based on the estimated number of hours at a low cost of $60/hour. If the job cannot be done with working bees then the whole job is costed with labour included. This occurs for electrical wiring, plumbing and repairs where specialised scaffolding or other skills are required. The final column is an estimate of the full cost of contracting the work out. If the clubrooms are to be retained then the work should be done to a high and certifiable standard. Too much of the work on the clubrooms in the past has been done at a home handymans standard and on the cheap, longevity of the building has not always been considered. Some members think that the proposed work can be done for substantially less than these estimates, this is by using second hand materials and a huge commitment to working bees. If you want to retain the rooms you will have to ask yourselves whether you want to do this for a building that we only use about Âź of at a maximum of 30 times per year. Other members have estimated the cost of these repairs will be well over $140,000, so, the estimates in the following table are probably not too far out. We have about $60,000 in the club kitty at present and I would not like to see this go to much below $20,000 to cope with contingencies. Please think on this and try to be logical about it and consider the future. How many of you want to be involved with the heavy lifting associated with the repair work and how many of you will want to be doing this in 5 years time? Selling the rooms will in no way diminish the club and it may well enhance our enjoyment of it.

We are ticking along with the cars behaving - 1600 plus kms so far. Allan Hardacre and Dennis Milne in the '15 DB roadster were second in the over 20hp with 54 entries on the rally. In the teams event which is 3 cars we won that with them, Judy and I in the 18 Cadi and Rob and Diane Ross in a '15 DB tourer. Both our cars are furthest driven to the rally. Tomorrow we head to Te Anau on the Prince Henry Tour. John Callesen

The Editor, Manawatu VCC Property Estimates. The estimated future costs and proposals made interesting reading last month but some of the ideas would completely change the character and style of our clubrooms. Some of the suggestions appear quite unnecessary for a Car Club. Selling the parts, library and memorabilia is hardly the correct thing to do under our Constitution rules 3.2, 3.4, and 3.5. Finally will members have the opportunity at the Special General Meeting to discuss their submissions and the proposed motion BEFORE the vote is taken? ANAWATU INTAGE ALLY EPORT SUNDAY 20TH SEPTEMBER 2020 BY ISABELLE PETTIGREW Whoever ordered the weather for this day needs a medal! Not a cloud in the sky; not even a breeze. We gathered at our clubrooms in Kelvin Grove for a hot drink, the briefing and start. Great to see each other again and among the chatter you could hear ‘nice to see you’ ‘how are you?’, and ‘how is the old girl?’ [Watch out guys! No offence ladies, the guys referred to their four-wheel petrol-driven old girl.] It was no problem hearing Cliff – welcoming our visitors (who I noticed admired the many photos on the wall) and giving the rally instructions. As navigator I loved the instructions…. no questions, no silent checks, no straight-line navigation and no speed checks. Just enjoyment! (My dentist would’ve loved the toffees in the rally pack – as it took one of my fillings last time – so I didn’t miss them.) The drive was great from the start – city joggers waving to us, and soon we were past the city homes, lifestyle homes….. and then to enjoy the farm homesteads and countryside. By that time the cows were milked, calves fed, and lambs grazing with their mums. I loved looking around – especially as we’re sitting high in the old car. For those without a window to wind up – we could enjoy the country smell. Sometimes good, sometimes not so good…. but good for the sinuses anyway. An instruction that says ‘left/right at T’ meant I could look around without having to check for the next turnoff. Our toilet stop was in Shannon – thanks for that Cliff! It was about time! Plus good to stretch our legs. I didn’t mind the short stretch of metal road. It was as if the Model A agreed…. trying to say “this is my familiar territory”; the Model A purred along even better. Lunch stop was at Foxton’s Boat Club. It was ‘in style’. Sitting on a chair at a table and to top it all…. with a sea view. We enjoyed the chatter again while filling our tummies and watching what’s happening on the river. There was a very small glitch in the instructions but our scout, Laurie Cocker, was there waiting and directed us. No problem! This certainly was a day we all enjoyed. Away from Covid talk, away from election talk, away from recession talk. A huge thanks to Cliff who arranged a most enjoyable and scenic rally. He’s put a lot of time into it; I’m sure you’ll all join me with a ‘Three Cheers to Cliff!’ Isabelle Pettigrew Page 16

ISTORY OF THE

OCOMOBILE

(USA 1899-1929)

Locomobile was a pioneering American automobile manufacturer founded in 1899 to exploit the steam car design of the Stanley Brothers - the name coined from “locomotive” and “automobile”. Locomobile (of Bridgeport, Connecticut) was soon, even though just briefly, America’s biggest manufacturer - known for its dedication to precision before the assembly line era, turning out 4000 cars between 1899 and 1902. The company manufactured affordable, small steam cars. But the steam Locomobiles were unreliable, finicky to operate, prone to kerosene fires, had small water tanks (getting only 20 miles per tank), and took time to raise steam. Their frail steam buggy was widely copied, but in 1902 they built their first petrol car - a four-cylinder model which was so successful that they gave up steam cars in 1903. They were soon established as makers of big expensive petrol cars, including in 1904, the twocylinder Type C 9/12hp and the Type D 18/22hp, a chain drive four along Mercedes lines.

1901 Locomobile Steam Car

The 1904 Locomobile Touring Car had space for five passengers. It had a front mounted, vertical, water-cooled straight-4 engine which produced 16bhp. A three speed sliding transmission was used and the steel framed car weighed 2,200lb. These were followed by the Type E 15/20hp (right), the 40/45hp Type F and the 30/35hp Type H of 1905-06, as well as a replica of their Gordon Bennett racer, a 17.7 litre four. In 1911 came the 8-litre, six cylinder Model 48 (‘the Exclusive Car for Exclusive People’). This remained in production until 1929. In 1920, Locomobile was briefly linked with Mercer and Crane-Simplex, then in 1923 became part of Billy Durant’s final empire. New models, the 192527 Junior Eight and the luxury Model 90 appeared, and the Locomobile plant also built the low priced Flint Six. The last Locomobile, Model 88, had a 4.9 litre Lycoming engine.

TARGA VCC TIME TRIALS Hi Everyone - Great News! 1. Dates for 2021 - 25th to 30th October:

Dates for the 2021 Targa VCC time trials, (in conjunction with the main Targa NZ event), start with Documentation Labour Day Monday 25th October and finish Saturday 30th October 2021. Our full time trial event will be over 5 days (Tuesday to Saturday), and we'll also offer a 2 day time trial for the last 2 days, (Friday/Saturday), to enable those who can't join us for the full event to enter for the last 2 days, (as we tried to do this year, but all cancelled due to Covid-19). The route is yet to be finalised, but heads up it will be central North Island, with a good chance it may start in Taranaki and finish in the Hawkes Bay. Hopefully this will enable easier travel plans for most of us, especially those coming up from the South Island. As we've done previously, our VCC time trial group will most likely get together on the afternoon of Sunday 24th October for our own meet & greet, afternoon tea, Scrutineering, RallySafe installation etc. (Subject to Covid-19 etc Targa may also run a small event in April/May 2021, but it's not practical to include a VCC time trial component in that event). 2. VCC ID CARDS - RENEWAL APPLICATIONS - MESSAGE FROM HEAD OFFICE NZVCC Please note that all VCC ID Cards have an expiry. This expiry is upon change of ownership, or 10 years from the issue date. Your vehicle must also be as described on the card. A renewal form personalised for each vehicle ID Card is distributed by National Office to current financial members, approximately 3 months before the expiration. Even if your vehicle has had no changes, this form must be checked, signed and forwarded to your Branch, along with the ID Card (if the photo correctly shows your vehicle in its present state), or three new photos, as stated on the form. Upon receipt at the National Office, the ID Card will be reissued and will be valid for a further 10 years unless there is a change of ownership or major changes to the vehicle in that time. It is compulsory for all National and International Rallies that vehicles entered must have a current valid ID Card.
