It’s good to see that we have three people in our branch who will shortly have their 50 years of membership in Vintage Car Club acknowledged. This is certainly some achievement and we all wish them well. I understand that we have a membership of about 150 persons. Unfortunately we had a total of 15 only at the last club night. A bit of a disappointment really as our speaker had travelled from Dannevirke for us. This to me is indicative of the feeling I am experiencing within the club. It is beyond time that individual differences were settled so that we can get on with enjoying VCC activities - including club nights - for the good of all. You know the old saying use it or lose it. I don’t know if all our members are aware but our Treasurer is now our Acting Secretary, Branch Delegate and Swapmeet Coordinator. This is totally unacceptable in my view. I would like members to use some commonsense at the upcoming AGM so that this can be rectified. On the other side of the coin, thank you Esther for a really great Ruahine Ramble. My wife and I attended the lunch at Apiti and if the volume of chatter was anything to go by, all those that attended were thoroughly enjoying themselves. I hope to see more at club night please. Thank you to those that have been turning out for the working bees. It was a great turn out of cars for the Ruahine Rally with cars from Wanganui, Central Hawkes Bay and Levin Branches. Weather was exceedingly kind to us on the day with the rain coming at around 4.00pm. I would like to ask the club members to start to think about the up coming AGM in May. There are several office positions available for this coming year. We would like to hear from anyone that would like to be on the Committee. I am stepping down from Club Captain this year so it would be great to have someone to take over the position. Please don’t forget the Sculpture show at Kimbolton on 27th March. It is a great day out – take a picnic or buy lunch. It is a great way to show our cars to the public.

Meet at the club rooms 8.45am with the Rally Briefing at 9.15am. The first car will be away at 9.30am. There is petrol on the way and at the lunch stop. It would be good to start with a full tank of petrol. The rally will be finishing with afternoon tea around 2.00 2.30pm with a cuppa. We are finishing early so that gives you time to get home in day light. The roads are all quite easy with no gravel roads. Executive Meeting held 20 March 2021 Miramar Golf Club, Wellington Meeting opened 9:45 am President Diane Quarrie welcomed delegates, observers, life members, and new office administrator Robyn Ashworth. Matters arising from previous minutes: A survey was taken about the cataloguing of parts in branch parts sheds. As a result of this survey there is no national parts policy. All branches should be keeping a register of all events including club nights. Branches need to keep checking Health and Safety plans. The Incorporated Societies Act is under revision at present and the new Act seems to imply that officers of a society may be liable for health and safety breaches. Correspondence: A letter was received from Hawkes Bay Branch about partners of deceased members and whether they can be offered a lower rate of membership fee. Membership Status Report: Some of those showing as “resigned” are actually “unfinancial”. Anyone unfinancial after this meeting becomes a non-member. Guest Speaker: NZTA were invited to speak at the meeting but pulled out the day before. Clean Air Standards and new imports: Roger White recently attended a meeting about this. This legislation will only affect new imports. Vehicles over 40 years old will be exempt. This legislation is due to come into effect in 2023. Reports: Received from: Secretary / Treasurer, Long Service awards, North Island and South Island Club Captains, Beaded Wheels, Speed steward, Archivist, Insurance, Registrar, NZTA, LVVTA, FIVA, NZ Federation of Motoring, 2022 Vero International Festival of Historic Motoring, Facebook page, VCC National Day. All of these reports are available from branch secretary. Entry forms for the 2022 Vero International Festival of Historic Motoring will be out soon. VCC National Day is 22 August 2021. The Cancer Society is the beneficiary. A survey has been sent to branches. Notice of motion: To amend constitution to allow for members to join online. A set fee of $100.00 is proposed for the first year of membership by those who apply online. This amount will change the following year of membership depending upon individual branch levies. These applications will then be sent to branches for the usual joining process. A person becomes a member as soon as a branch accepts them and their membership is ratified at the next 6 monthly Exec Meeting. Page 7

Proposed Remit to Change Club By Law: Special Interest Groups: The VCC has been approached by several one-make clubs wishing to join the Club as a group. The proposed by law change suggests that this could happen if each group becomes their own branch within the VCC with all members of that group having to become individual members of the VCC. If a member of such a special interest group is already a VCC member they will need to choose whether to remain a member of their geographical branch or switch membership to the special interest branch. This topic caused a lot of discussion. It was formalised as a notice of motion with submissions due by 30 April 2021 to be voted upon by the 2021 AGM in August. General Business: Venue for AGM: Rydges Hotel Christchurch. This AGM will mark 75 years for the VCC. There will be a commemorative rally on the Friday followed by the Executive Meeting with the AGM on the Saturday followed by the rest of the Exec Meeting. There will be a further get together of cars on the Sunday. Members are encouraged to attend. Entry forms will be available in May. Presentation about branding: At the AGM in 2019 the executive agreed to update the VCC logo. (The name of the Club will not change – just the logo) The brief was given to a designer who came up with the tag line “Driving our history”. The proposed product was shown and given general approval by delegates. New Systems at National Office: Murray Trounson was recently appointed to the Management Committee and tasked with overhauling the 25 year old office systems. He has spent a huge number of hours on this task and now has integrated all systems which will make the job of the office staff much easier. Events: Central Otago Branch has offered to host the National Veteran Rally in Oct 2023. This bid was accepted. Wanganui Branch has offered to host the National Commercial Rally in 2023. Southland has offered to host the National Motorcycle Rally in 2023 Roger White suggested closing the Post 80 class of vehicles at 31 Dec 1999. Emailed Branch Magazines: These are emailed to each branch secretary. It was suggested that secretaries ask members which branch issues they would like to be sent. Allan and Dennis and John and John and now Judy continue their journey to Gore and return. We left our intrepid team in instalment 1 at a very pleasant motel in Mosgiel having added John C’s wife to our touring group. After a lovely relaxing day in Mosgiel enjoying the sun and tinkering with the cars it was off to Gorrre. The closer we got the cooler it got. Getting out of the car for a driver servicing stop just before Gore one of the drivers door hinges on the Dodge broke (the only failure on the trip). Arriving in Gore at the VCC, I asked about finding/borrowing a welder when Paul Heron, the rally organizer, ran me off to his workshop. The hinge was welded and painted and back on the car in less than an hour. Pretty damn good southern hospitality! After the requisite amount of barbequing and blether at the Gore clubrooms we were up in the morning for a show and skite session in the centre of Gore and then a run to the Marairua Farm Complex just south of Gore. Although the house was not all that elaborate on the outside, it was in very good conditions and very original, the grounds were superb and looked fantastic with all of the cars lined up in the sunshine. The following day, Sunday, was a teams driving skills day in the show grounds with public participation invited. However, it gradually became so impossibly cold that we tootled off early to go find somewhere warm, preferably also selling warming fluids. The team (the Dodgillacs) comprising two Dodges (Rob and Dianne Ross and the Milne-Hardacre combination) and a Cadillac (Callesen/Hastilow) took out the rally/driving skills team prize.

The day after the veteran rally Greg Elder took us all into Invercargill to visit the Bill Richardson Transport museum. There are around 300 truck and passenger vehicles on display including almost every Ford model made and about another 300 vehicles in the motorcycle section. We made a grand day of it and I’m sure that all of you who have visited there will agree with us that the displays are amazing.

The move to Te Anau for the Prince Henry rally resulted in a massive change in the weather for the better, the sun shone, the birdies tweeted, little white clouds floated about and life was again good for touring in a veteran car. Dennis Milne had abandoned me at this stage to return home and John Hastilow became a Dodge copilot, a welcome change from the 1912 Cadillac he left in Christchurch he said .. or perhaps that was just to make me feel good. Te Anau felt like an abandoned town when we got there, bars, restaurants and motels were closed and there were next to no tourists. But it was good for us as it made the driving MUCH easier but we really felt for the business owners.

The lack of tourists also made the rally day driving up lake Te Anau and then following the Eglington Valley up to the Cascade picnic area (at lake Gunn) a real pleasure. No buses to worry about, just touring along in the dappled shade of the beech trees, this day was just magic as you can see from the photo of the dodge up near the mirror lakes picnic area.

Our return to the North was via Roxburgh, Clyde, Cromwell the Lindis pass and onto Twizel. Luckily, we just missed a fatal accident on this road, a head-on. A single guy was watching a movie while driving, the movie was still running on his phone .. but he wasn’t when they pulled him out. Luckily the occupants of the other car survived. … Darwin does sometimes get it right but he is not always that PC about it, like the author of this article.

After a night in Twizel we headed into Christchurch via Burkes Pass and Fairlie. On the steep bits down the pass the Dodgy boys were keen to keep a good gap between the Cadillac, at over a tonne heavier than the Dodge and with little engine braking from the V8 the Caddy takes some driving down the hills and I was not going to be the auxiliary brake. After Fairlie the wind got up and by the time we met SH1 it was also raining with extra traffic, diabolical b----y traffic. After a couple of nights in Christchurch, the rest of the tour was a straight run up the coast with a night in Kaikoura. Yes, it was a pretty epic journey but at the end the drivers and the cars were still very happy and still good friends. We remember the stops for morning coffee in the cafes in small towns on the way, chatting with the people we met about the cars and having to convince some that yes, we’d driven these old, old cars all the way from Palmerston North. We remember the great hospitality from club members at Gore. So, thanks to John C for organizing this and thanks to our companions along the way, Dennis Milne, John Hastilow, and of course Judy C.

Adrian was a member of the Vintage Car Club for 47 years having joined in May 1973. He was Branch Secretary for three years in the mid-1970’s. Page 13

Our 1960 vintage car has a cylinder block of chromium iron and cylinder head of aluminium alloy. With the prevention of cylinder head corrosion foremost in my mind I replaced the coolant in the car last year during lockdown even though it was a little earlier than the eight year life of the product.
My interpretation from the label is that it should be expected to provide Anti-Freeze, Anti-Boil and Anti-Corrosion protection for eight years. A few weeks after changing the coolant I was ‘surfing’ a motoring forum on the internet and came across several entries which suggested that while the life of Anti-Freeze might be several years, that kind of life span does not apply to the Anti-Corrosion inhibitor. Below are extracts from some of the forum entries I found: 1. Mch2005 - “….Dexcool is still a ethylene glycol based anti-freeze. The real
difference between it and the regular antifreeze is the corrosion protection package added to each. All the controversy I read seems to indicate that the packages often don’t last anywhere near the 5 years that is claimed. If you change it every 2 years you seem safe. ….”
2. Oct2007 - “….Finally, I use any of the standard brands of ethylene glycol anti-
freeze available. All anti-freezes have corrosion inhibitors as well as lubricants for the water pump seal and they all loose their effectiveness after a year or so. Because I will drain it out next year and replace it with new, I regard it as a maintenance item, like oil and grease - ….”
3. May2017 - “…. 2 to 5 yr..whatever the label for the type you are using. It is
the anti-rust/corrosion additives that deteriorate, the anti-freeze component stays OK…unless you top up with just water (top up with your pre-mix)….” - “….The thing is, the corrosion inhibitors in antifreeze get used up. That’s why you are supposed to change it every 2 years. ….”

So, armed with these ‘opinions’ I wandered into Radiator Services and asked them for their view on the life of the Anti-Corrosion inhibitors in Anti-Freeze - given that the products are labelled to suggest a life of several years. Avoiding discussion around ‘brands’, they were quite adamant that when relying on the product to protect against corrosion on an aluminium head their recommendation was that the coolant should be changed every two years. I recently decided to further investigate the life of the Anti-Corrosion properties in Anti-Freeze and contacted Penrite directly by email. In my email to Penrite I clarified that because of the climate where I live I was not really using the Anti-Freeze product for its Anti-Freeze properties, but primarily for its Anti-Corrosion properties. Below is the reply which I received. To: bryana@xtra.co.nz Subject: RE: New enquiry Hi Bryan We often recommend CLASSIC CAR COOLANT (CONCENTRATE) http://www.penriteoil.com.au/products/classic-car-coolant-concentrate - for classic vehicles which is recommended to be used at a concentration rate between 10% to 15% in demineralised water. Optimum protection is achieved at a dosage rate of 12% for which a change interval of 3 years applies. For reference however, there are plenty of cars using glycol based coolants in classic cars. Within a few minutes of the above email arriving I received a phone call from Penrite in Australia (from the writer) wanting to clarify that because I had indicated that I was not particularly needing the Anti-Freeze properties of the product he had suggested the Classic Car Coolant (which is not an Anti-Freeze) as an alternative. But he did say that whichever product I decided to use (the Classic Car Coolant or the Anti-Freeze), the Anti-Corrosion inhibitors in both products were every bit as good as each other - (but he very strongly emphasised to not mix the two products one has an Ethylene glycol base and the other has a hybrid-organic non-glycol base).
I was advised that if I was to continue using Anti-Freeze, that like the Classic Car Coolant, it should have a change interval of 3 years if ‘optimum protection’ from the Anti-Corrosion inhibitors is sought. So, whilst the Anti-Freeze product does offer ‘protection’ against corrosion for 8 years (as indicated on the label), ‘optimum protection’ against corrosion is only achieved with a 3 yearly coolant change regime. Needless to say, going forward I will be now be draining, flushing and replacing the coolant somewhere between 2 years and 3 years. Page 15

Diesel Oil, Flat Tappets & petrol Engines "Zinc" or "Phosphorus" on an oil bottle label usually is referring to the additive Zinc Dialkyl Dithiophos-Phate (ZDDP). ZDDP helps prevent wear, especially where the camshaft contacts the lifter in flat tappet lifter engines. Newer engines (since the late 1980s) have roller valve lifters and therefore do not benefit as much from ZDDP. The anti-wear benefits of ZDDP were recognized in the 1950s. The oil of the 1950s had only about 300 parts per million (ppm) ZDDP. The concentration of ZDDP in motor oil gradually increased until it reached a maximum of 1200 to 1400 ppm in the 1980s. (More than 1400 ppm of ZDDP in oil actually starts to increase engine wear.) Unfortunately, it was discovered that ZDDP makes catalytic converters for gasoline engines less effective by gradually coating the catalyst material with phosphate. To satisfy the latest API Service "SN" oil standard, oil manufacturers only put 600 to 800 ppm ZDDP in their oil. For over a decade, car enthusiasts with flat tappet lifter engines have been debating whether the 600 to 800 ppm ZDDP in new "SN" oil is enough protection. Oil experts say that it is enough wear protection once the engine is broken in. The flat tappet lifter equipped engines in my family fleet were all broken in around a half century ago. I still like to dote on my old cars by giving them a little extra ZDDP as long as it does not require too much hassle or extra money. Valvoline VR1 Racing Oil has been one convenient option. It does not qualify for the "SN" rating because it has too much ZDDP and it is "not recommended for extended use in vehicles with catalytic converters." Another new, less expensive possibility may be the 10W-30 oil made for some of the most modern diesel engines. Some old car enthusiasts have long recommended oil for diesel engines because it frequently contained more ZDDP. Unfortunately, diesel oil was typically only available in a heavy weight such as 15W-40. The label on Motorcraft's 10W-30 oil for diesels says it "contains more than 1000 ppm phosphorus for better wear protection." That is 200 to 400 more ppm at little or no additional cost compared to "SN" 10W-30 oils. The Motorcraft diesel oil label also says, "do not use in gasoline engines equipped with catalysts." -

With the weather outlook for rain later in the day Roan and I set out from the club rooms with the hood down in my 29 Chevrolet Tourer hoping it would hold off till at least lunchtime. Off down Watershed Road to Hiwinui then through to the top end of Feilding and a quick fuel stop. From there across to Makino Road, up Mangone Road to admire the view as you travel across the top towards Halcombe and carrying on the theme of nice country roads towards Tokorangi - then across to come out at the end of Williamson Road south of Waituna West. A right headed us towards Cheltenham then into Beaconsfield Valley Road where the country side starts to get a bit more rugged. Once we get across to Levett Road we get into real vintage roads with the start of the gravel roads which in my opinion have been lacking in rallies over the last few years. McBeth Road is a fantastic piece of vintage motoring narrow, windy and most of all a bit of greenery growing up the centreline and made some very good video on the camera I had setup on the car!! As we approach the main road north of Kimbolton the instructions said right at the T. Unfortunately a few people had thought this was taken a couple of km’s back but the other road was a No Exit so were one instruction ahead and turned left instead. As I followed them round the corner I was thinking hang on we have one instruction to get to Apiti and at the moment we are north of the turn off - so a quick U turn and we were back on track turning left towards Apiti and the lunch stop at the pub which Roan was most excited about!! After a very nice pub lunch we headed north and then right down Pohangina Valley East Road. This is a good drivers road with plenty of variation and great scenery then onto Pohangina Ashhurst Road, right up Ulysses Road winding our way back to the club rooms via Watershed Road back to finish off a fantastic day out. Big thanks to Esther for organising a fantastic day out!!

I have a 1933 Pierce Arrow model 836 Brougham. I have no spare parts for it. Would like to know if there is anything out there. Particularly steering wheel controls, mine are missing, have attached a photo of what they look like. Maybe steering wheel controls from another make are interchangeable. Engine, differential, gearbox from later model ( full synchro ), 17” wire wheels. Radiator cap, my radiator cap has been broken, and put back together, would like to get another. I am also concerned about theft. Here is a photo of my existing one. Instruments, ammeter, fuel, temperature. The original fuel and temperature gauges, were the fluid type. They are missing, not sure how accurate they were, and whether they are worth pursuing. Would be ok with gauges that have the same chrome bezel as my oil gauge. Not too worried if the faces are different, as they can be changed. Photo of my oil gauge attached. Will appreciate any help that can be offered.

VEHICLE IDENTITY CARD APPLICATION FORM CHANGES Members should be aware that there have been some changes to the process of having a VIC issued. These changes are reflected in the Vehicle Identity Card application forms. You now need to use forms which are dated as follows: Pages 1, 2, and 3 are dated 09/2019. (the date is in the top RH corner below the page number) Page 4 is dated 01/2021. Page 5 is dated 09/2019. Pages 6 and 7 are dated 10/2020. The main change is that photographs are required of all available identifying serial numbers - i.e. chassis/frame, engine, body, VIN, and any other identifying features together with copies of any paper work that is relevant to your vehicle. Only one photograph/copy of the above is required, but three photographs of the finished vehicle are still required. If a car or commercial vehicle, the photograph should be on ¾ view and a motorcycle needs to be taken side on. A set of papers can be obtained from the VCC website.

SCRAP METAL COLLECTION A large bin for disposal of old scrap metal including your old (clean) household tins etc. is located on the eastern side of the main parts shed (i.e. between the two parts sheds). Money raised from the sale of scrap helps with the ongoing maintenance of the clubrooms and parts sheds.
