Well its 2021 and I hope you all had an enjoyable Christmas and New Year and before we know it, it will be Christmas again. I would like to say that with a new year we can now forget about the issues that faced the branch last year and move forward as a united group but obviously it’ s not as simple as that. The club property is and has been for a number of years a divisive subject and I think for the sake of the branch and its members the committee and myself need to take another look at the clubrooms and grounds as a priority. With this in mind I intend to look initially into the financial aspects of the property. The aim of this is to eventually provide members with information of what’ s happened financially in the past, where we are now and to provide a discussion starting point around possible options for the future. Happy New Year. I think we are all looking forward to a better year this 2021. It is time to unleash the car from the shed and dust off the cobwebs. Give it a drink of petrol and let it sniff the fresh air on the country roads. Fill the car with its owners and go out for a ride and have fellowship with other like-minded people. It is also time to just put the problem with the club rooms aside and enjoy being a car owner and having fun in the cars. We are a car club so it would be great to see more of our cars out on runs with their owners. We do have some good runs organised for the coming year. Please come along and support the branch. Last year we were asked by the public at different times for display cars and giving people rides. It would be good for more cars to come along and support us in waving the flag for Manawatu Branch of VCC. We are starting to get a good profile in the community. Please be proud of who we are, and this is another way of getting new Club members. It was great to see a few cars at the Feilding and Shannon Christmas parades. Thank you to those that came along to support these parades. It was good to see so many cars out on the New Years Day run. Sounds like the weather was a lot better than where I was. We had rain and cold for New Years Day. Queenstown was packed and we had to wait 1½ hours for Ferg Burger in the rain. Thank you to those that turned up to help with the gardens at the club rooms at the working bee. It sounds like a lot of work was done around the grounds. We have decided to have working bees on the 2nd Wednesday of every month.
COMING EVENTS 31st January 2021 Pack a picnic lunch then head to Dannevirke for Wheels with Attitude. It starts at 10am and runs to 2pm at the Dannevirke A&P Showgrounds. 7th February 2021 Veteran Rally As this is the first Sunday in the month, we will be joining the Veteran Rally at teatime. Come along with your tea and drinks to see the cars at the club rooms. Meet around 4.30pm at the club rooms with Tea and drinks. Page 6

10th February 2021 Working bee at club rooms around 9.30 am with (BYO) lunch if you would like to stay on until 2.00pm. We will be doing some chairs and gardening, also cleaning out the tractor shed. Please bring your own tools. 28th February 2021 Meet at railway land by the Railway hotel at 9.00am to go the Heritage Day in Levin. The Fee to get in will be $2.00 per person. We are meeting at the Levin branch club rooms for a fun day of displays and stalls etc. There will be some food stalls and scones cooked on coal ranges. Bring a picnic or buy some food there. So, come and support the Horowhenua Branch on their big day. They will be doing a parade of different years of cars so if you are going to come can you please let me know ahead of time to see if they are requiring any of our branch cars. 6th March 2021 Ruahine Ramble Meet at club rooms at 9.15am with the briefing at 9.30am - first car away 9.45am. We are going to have lunch at a pub at your expense. There will be afternoon tea for free. We will be doing approx. 180kms. There will be a little gravel. See the Tourer for the entry form. 10th March 2021 Working bee. More information in the next Tourer. 27th March 2021 2021 Kimbolton Sculpture Festival.

November 22nd gave Manawatu Branch members a choice of two outings with neighbouring branches - the Picnic in the Park with the Central Hawke’ s Bay Branch, or the Tararua Trundle with the Horowhenua Branch. We opted for the picnic and were one of five cars from our branch. There was also a good turn out from the Wanganui Branch. About 25 (or more) cars in total managed to park up under the trees and have a picnic before rain sent people back into their cars or bargain hunting in the Woodville second hand shops (as you do).

We chose the Trundle as our outing for the 22nd November. At the briefing we were given a choice of being competitive or not - we opted for non-competitive. The Trundle started with a short street tour before heading north into the countryside where we came to an instruction which lead us into an ‘off road section’(a farm track). Out the other end of the track into Buckley Rd and it was through more pleasant countryside onto Tokomaru School for the lunch stop. After an enjoyable prepared school lunch of soup, rolls (choice of meats), cake, fruit and a hot drink, rain and hail began falling so that became the prompt to start the afternoon section which took us back to the clubrooms via Opiki and Shannon. A very relaxing day out with our neighbouring Horowhenua branch. Right: - some of the 38 participating cars parked up at the Levin Clubrooms before the start.

Allan and Dennis and John and John journey to the veteran rally in Gore. A plan was hatched by John Callesen to take the 1918 Cadillac and as a travelling companion our 1915 Dodge roadster to Gore for the 2020 national veteran rally to be held on the 16-18th of October 2020 and then onto the Prince Henry tour based in Te Anau immediately afterwards. In true Callesen style the route was not going to be straight forward and of course the weather in October is not always the most predictable or clement for veteran motoring. The ladies decided that this was too hard core for them so Dennis Milne dug out his winter woollies to come along as co-driver in the Dodge and John Hastilow from Christchurch was to join John in the Cadillac in Blenheim ‌ Good, everyone happy. The Dodge left Palmy on time to catch the Bluebridge over to Picton but unfortunately the Caddy had to stay behind to attend to a sudden petrol tank leak. Was this fright at having to keep up with a Dodge??? A slightly bleary-eyed John turned up at about 2 in the morning and after a briefish kip and a solid breakfast we all set off in the misty rain up the Wairau valley to Reefton. Thankfully this was the only mechanical glitch in somewhere around 2600 miles of motoring. At Reefton the rain was very persistent and quite wet, bringing to mind the poem about the west coast rain below.

The good things about Reefton were the very friendly Motel owner at the Lantern Motel, the good meals (and beer) at the local pub and later the gin dishdillery (sic) where we stopped to buy some treats for the other halves at home. Hokitika …..
As we moved west the rain became denser and more horizontal and it was generally decided that we had to stop off at Blackball for some restorative fluids (for the drivers that is). As we went west the weather became … well more west coast like. For the run between Greymouth and Hokitika it was impossible to determine rain from sea spray, the windage on the Dodge was quite exciting as well … NOT! It was good that Dennis was sitting on my left (the down-wind side) otherwise he might have given up then and there. However, after a glass of wine and a surfeit of the local delicacy, whitebait pizza, invented by Giovanni Te Tai Poutini (look that one up) we were completely restored and ready next day for the PASS’ s invented by brothers Arthur and Porter Te Tai Poutini. Away from the coast the weather improved the mood of the team picked up and by the time we were heading into the hills we were enjoying a beautiful day as we drove eastwards and up the Bealey river, the scenery at Arthurs pass is breath-taking on a fine day. With the hood up on the Dodge I was a bit nervous about the destructive looking beaks of the Keas that mobbed us when we stopped for the morning coffee, but all was well, like the tourists up there they also wanted to admire the cars. After a stop for cheese, delicious cheese, at Geraldine and if you are down that way you must stop to buy some, no lots, of their Epicurean cheddar and Gruyere. Then it was onto accommodation in lovely warm sunny Timaru with a visit to Dennis’ s son Mat and Gavin another keen vintagent. Gavin had a collection of Dodges, clearly a man of impeccable taste though his latest purchase was a Chrysler, but that is OK, they’ re from the same stable. Gavins latest acquisition, Note the Dodge Polara with gorgeous fins in the background.

After a couple of nights in Timaru we headed inland in rapidly cooling weather. The plan was to follow the Kye Burn river up and over Danseys pass and stay the night at Danseys Pass pub, a really great place to stay with a fantastic atmosphere if you are down that The mates at the summit of Danseys Pass way. However, with the rapidly decreasing temperature and no garaging at the pub we were a bit nervous about leaving the cars outside in well below zero conditions so we limited our stay at the Pub to a warming beverage originating in Scotland and pushed on to a warm motel in Ranfurly. The next day it was onto Gore for the rally. The drive was again in brilliant but very cold weather. As we crossed the Rock and Pillar range at about 10:30 in the morning each of the irrigation sprinklers was surrounded by ice from the water spray. It is beautiful country down that way when the weather is good made even more spectacular in the spring by the flowering Broom and Gorse in the gullys.
Veteran motoring at its best!
As we dropped down into Mosgiel the temperatures became less wintery and a lot more springy. Longbourne Lodge, just out of Mosgiel is a cracker place to stay and the owners made us most welcome. We had a lazy day there pottering around with the cars in the sunshine making sure nothing was about to fall off while John C went to the airport to pick up wife Judy who joined us for the rest of the tour. In the next instalment I’ ll cover the Gore veteran and Prince Henry Rallys and the tour home. Allan Page 12

IGHTING
The sealed beam headlamp, a significant advance in automotive lighting, was introduced in August 1939 after a three year long development programme. In cooperation with other lamp manufacturers and the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators, General Electric publicly introduced the new headlamp at Nela Park in Cleveland, Ohio, the site of the electric company’ s laboratories where its lighting research was done.
The 1938 drawing (above) shows a design that GE received a patent for on the 21st February 1939. The illustration shows the glass lens and the rear reflector section which was aluminised by vaporisation of the metal in a vacuum. The two glass pieces were then fused together by localised heating of a small portion of the two joined sections. The tungsten light filament, its support, and wiring connectors are also visible in the drawing. The assembly was filled with an inert gas to prolong the life of the lighting element. -

Approximately 15 cars and crews met at the Coach House Museum in Feilding for a natter and coffee before heading off to the Kimbolton Hotel for lunch. After finishing their drinks in the bar, members gravitated outside where the Hotel staff had erected a marquee for members to have their BBQ lunch in.

Wellington businessman and politician William McLean imported the first motor car into New Zealand in 1898. On 28th October, the McLean Motorcar Act allowed McLean and others to drive their vehicles on roads subject to local by-laws and any regulations the Government might promulgate. In 1899, Timaru engineer Cecil Wood developed his first combustion engine and built New Zealand’ s first motorcycle. In 1901 Wood built a car and drove it around Timaru’ s streets. In 1901, a Mr Oates, pioneer of New Zealand cycle manufacturing, drove his Benz in the first motor car journey from Wellington to Napier. This was considered to be a remarkable feat at the time. In 1905 (Feb > Mch), Mr and Mrs B Leyland and Mr and Mrs J A Moody travelled to Wellington from Auckland in a Leyland 15hp Darracq. They then went from Nelson to Greymouth via the Buller. Also in 1905, motor car registration was made compulsory. Local authorities administered the Act and registration letters were assigned to each provincial district. In January 1907 W B Leyland left Wellington in a 15hp Darracq to drive around the North Island. He was the first motorist to complete the journey. The first driver’ s licence was issued in Wellington in 1912. In 1917 the Garage Proprietors Association of New Zealand was formed. Its name was changed later to the Retail Motor Trade Association. In 1924 the Motor Vehicles Act provided for annual licence fees for all vehicles (the revenue going to the Main Highways Board), annual licensing of drivers (by local bodies) and penalties for dangerous driving. In 1936 the Motor Vehicles Amendment Act imposed a 30mph (50kph) speed limit in built-up areas. It was 1937 when the first edition of the Road Code was published, and Warrants of Fitness were required by law for all vehicles not already covered by certificates. The first zebra crossing was introduced in Petone in 1938. In 1939 an annual driving test and a medical examination were made compulsory for drivers over the age of 70. Page 23

4 annual “Stretched Gymkhana” Saturday February 20th 2021 Building on the success of the last 3 year’ s events (and originally inspired by some of the “off-tarmac” events reported on in the Beaded Wheels), on Saturday February 20th 2021 the Wairarapa Branch is holding their fourth Stretched Gymkhana. We have invited members from all the lower North Island VCC branches to enter this event.
Do you like the excitement of gymkhana style driving, on grass?
Would you enjoy the challenge of trying to navigate at a constant speed, through a winding course, against the clock? o The course will be sufficiently challenging to ensure unsafe speeds cannot be obtained –this isn’ t a “Speed Event” .
Can you meet the challenge of driving a course consistently, so as to maintain, as far as possible, the same time each lap?
If you answer YES to all of these, then the Stretched Gymkhana is an event not to be missed. There are limited spaces so register early. Event outline:
Driver’ s briefing will be at 8:45am, with the event expected to finish mid/late afternoon (BYO lunch / bbq sausages and bread will be available).
The course will be around a ½ mile in length o The course will be on grass, a bit like a classic gymkhana’ s cones course, there will be lots of sharp turns, to ensure that excessive speeds (i.e. greater than the speed limit) cannot be obtained
All drivers will have 3 (or more) timed runs over the course, after which the best time for each driver will be calculated (this becomes their individual target time).
From then on drivers have to try and match their target time, with 1/2 the field dropping out each time, until a winner is found o For example, if there were 16 drivers, once each driver’ s target time has been determined (from the practice runs), all 16 drivers have another run. Then the 8 drivers whose time was closest to their target time would move into the next round. These 8 drivers would have another run, and the 4 whose time was closest to their target time would have another run etc.

HOOTERS VINTAGE RACE SERIES - Updated Dates for the 2020/21 Season We have now been able to confirm dates for this seasons Hooters Vintage Race Series. Unfortunately due to the race calendar being compressed and therefore meetings oversubscribed, we have not been able to secure a grid at the HRC Taupo Meeting in January. That means that our first event will be at Pukekohe in February. As soon as entries open, I will let you know.

VCC ID CARDS - RENEWAL APPLICATIONS - MESSAGE FROM HEAD OFFICE NZVCC Please note that all VCC ID Cards have an expiry. This expiry is upon change of ownership, or 10 years from the issue date. Your vehicle must also be as described on the card. A renewal form personalised for each vehicle ID Card is distributed by National Office to current financial members, approximately 3 months before the expiration. Even if your vehicle has had no changes, this form must be checked, signed and forwarded to your Branch, along with the ID Card (if the photo correctly shows your vehicle in its present state), or three new photos, as stated on the form. Upon receipt at the National Office, the ID Card will be reissued and will be valid for a further 10 years unless there is a change of ownership or major changes to the vehicle in that time. It is compulsory for all National and International Rallies that vehicles entered must have a current valid ID Card.
VINTAGE CAR CLUB VEHICLE CLASSIFICATIONS VETERAN: VINTAGE:
Motor Vehicles constructed prior to 31st December 1918. Motor Vehicles constructed between 1st January 1919 and 31st December 1931.
POST VINTAGE : Motor Vehicles constructed between 1st January 1932 and 31st December 1945.
POST WAR :
Motor Vehicles constructed between 1st January 1946 and 31st December 1960.
POST 1960 :
Motor Vehicles constructed between 1st January 1961 and 31st December 1980.
POST 1980 :
Motor Vehicles constructed after 1st January 1981 provided that no vehicle is accepted for this class until January 1st of the year that is thirty years after its original year of construction.
