CHAIRMAN’S REPORT// By Steve Donovan
I would like to thank members of our last committee for the work they did on your behalf and they are all back again this year to carry on the good work. Welcome Trevor Charman as Club Captain. This is a very important role as he is responsible to ensure we have a good flow of Outings. It is important to note that it should be a coordinating role. He will need your support to come up with ideas for runs and outing. As he has already said that he will be happy to follow up and assist with outings. One of the challenges we have in our branch, we have been to many different places over the years and now need to revisit them. I often hear the comment that we have been to a particular place that is suggested. But please remember that other members may not have been to the place suggested.
You will notice that John Durry has agreed to keep you up to date with what is happening in the Parts Shed. Thanks John.
It is encouraging to hear that Helen Ball has taken on the role of Wednesday run coordinator with members coming forward to organize outings. If you would like to know more about these outing give Helen a call she will be only too happy to inform you as to what they do.
Remember it is you club and needs your input. The committee is there only to give it guidance you are the glue that keeps it together.

I have been able to find the time to attend the Tuesday morning chat and tea or coffee and a biscuit (maybe cake if you are lucky). These mornings are a well-attended informal get together. If you are a new member I would recommend for you to come along if you have time it is a good way to meet fellow members. It starts at 9am till 10.30am. Please have a chat in the Main hall as the parts manager gets upset if his workers cannot do what he asks them and there can be too many under his feet and he cannot crack the whip. Thanks to members who have passed on their best wishes I will try and do as good a job of this role that Ian did.
CLUB CAPTAIN// By Trevor Charman
Welcome to your new club captain’s report. Firstly I must thank Esther Smith, for holding this position for the past three years and for the great job that she has done finding places to visit and organising the runs over that time. Our thanks also to Graeme as I am sure that he has been actively helping Esther along the way and behind the scenes, and beating the groups to the destination and putting out the signs. Thanks to you both. Thank you to Esther also for the shed raid / run held on the 16th of August, which she organised, and many thanks to the ladies who baked and those who served the afternoon tea. This was a very well supported run, at one stage I counted 38 cars and wrote down 69 names, so thanks for your support it was good to see such a good turnout. Esther was also surprised and had to make a detour to collect more mugs for the afternoon tea. I thank those at the AGM for putting your faith in me to handle the club captain’s role. I do hope that you the members continue to support the club activities.

As we all have different ideas and contacts I will always be open to suggestions, so if you have an idea that could be of interest to the club please let me know. I am able to do the organising and run routes, printing etc, [as I am a stickler for good accurate instructions.] Any contacts or ideas for guest speakers will be appreciated also. The organising is often the easiest part, getting the idea is often harder. Safari is organised unless Covid 19 changes things, we hope not. At this stage we have 20 cars registered. Those registered should have received the pre rally information, with the meal payments listed. The evening meals have to be pre paid this year. [Seems to be the sign of the times.] There will be a guest speaker at the September meeting. So please come along and support the club. The September run is organised. See a separate page for the details.
One of my aims for the year is to try to encourage you, our members, to bring out the older cars that we do not see on many runs. To help encourage this I thought that we will try to keep some of the runs shorter and more social. I will endeavour to publicise the actual destination, the distance to be travelled and the travelling time to the

Sunday 13th September 2020. Assemble at the HBVCC grounds, 67 Sandy Road. At 9.45 am for a 10.00 am departure. There is a $10.00 p/p entry fee. Bring a picnic lunch, picnic chairs, drinks, and suitable foot ware. There is an undercover area for lunch, if the weather is not good, and toilets available. The distance is 56 kms, 1 hour travelling. [51 kms return.] We suggest that we walk some of the gardens when we arrive and re group at 12.30 pm for lunch, and then return to the gardens if you wish, as you can easily spend 2 to 3 hours to see all of the garden. AUGUST MID WEEK RUN// Barries Blurb
The day was bright sunny and welcoming, retiring mid-week run organiser Alan Twort spoke to the enthusiasts outlining that time had come for him to retire from the organising side of the mid-week runs and mentioning that he had followed on from Derek and now it was time for someone to take over the reins. Well done Alan and know that all us Wednesday folk appreciate what you both have done for the club. The Balls offered, under the guidance of Helen, who spoke and requested that all who turn up should also be challenged to put on a run for the club, many heads nodding in agreement, Helen out with pen and paper, begin the process. Onto todays run designed by Bob Ackerley, no written instructions but had handed out a Heritage Trails booklet then gave verbal instruction to the gathering as to where we were going, that done off we went. I should mention here that my old buddy, Ian Lee our navigator and yours truly, did not pay as much attention as we should, and were more interested in talking to the lovely Anne Watt, who had been offered a ride with Marie and Wayne Evans in their Vauxhall, nice to have Anne with us for the day and thanks to the Evans for doing that. Now Ian has re-named the Wed runs which we now call Donut Day as he always brings one along as part of lunch. After a little while we are heading down Church Road and notice that we are alone, everyone else

is lost we decide but we have checked the booklet because we heard the Hartree name mentioned. Looking at the map inside the booklet was the Hartree Reserve, up over the Wharerangi Hill don’t worry we will meet up with the rest at the Apley Rd intersection but no one shows so onwards we go, they will be coming out of the Hawkston Rd. Ian is always full of interesting subjects, at one time he was a very good Harrier and along with other mad runners, had run up this road as a support warm up for another Harrier Terry Manners who was going to the Olympics, so all along the way he was describing the run, they must have been nuts. Not a sign of a sole at Hawkston, hey look Brownie the gates at the Hartree Reserve are shut, buggar! We got this wrong Curley “ Ians nic name” we should be at Tom Hartrees place down Dartmoor way never mind we will get onto the Hawston Rd and just enjoy a good long run plus the Anglia hasn’t been out for a while. Beautiful country Curley eh, lamb numbers are down this year Brownie due to the lack of feed not many twins either, that sign said no exit Brownie and up our exhaust is a huge logging truck with a smiling driver, swing over and let him past turn around and back to the corner. Triplets here lambing is looking much better, phew what is that smell something like rotten eggs,

seems to be coming from that rather large building and yards down in the shallow valley. Great, back on the tar seal, chat chat chat here we are, made it, what a great drive, others already with hands full of Daffodils, but it is time to compare donuts. We are told, that due to our journey of exploration, the article for the mag is our care, fair enough, also told by certain members that there are fourteen cars here today to which we reply well thirteen of them got it wrong. We had a great day, thoroughly enjoyed Tom Hartrees property and worthy donations made by all. Anyone for a cold beer at the Puketapu? no ah well just Curley and me again but we earned it.

HBVCC SHED RAID// Sunday 16th August 2020
This was a very well attended run even though it was not a very nice day, no rain but it was very cold. The run began at Off The Track restaurant in Havelock North, where some of our members did enjoy some lunch there prior to the 12.30 pm start. Off the Track is a Holman family business and where Wim and Hennie store two of their cars. Also where Wim undertakes his restoration work. The club did visit the shed about two years ago and there was not much that looked like an Auburn car, except for a motor. The 1936 Auburn Coupe, has been a four year restoration. It is now looking magnificent, all painted up and the finishing touches to complete. Wim does hope to have it finished for Art Deco 2021. We look forward to seeing it completed and back on the road. I am sure that the car will attract a lot of attention. From Havelock North we travelled to Onekawa, Napier, to visit the shed of Paul Anderson. Paul has also embarked on a massive project, a ground up rebuild / restoration of a 1913 FN. FN’s were built by National Fabricators in Belgium who were well known for the manufacturing of firearms. The vehicle was originally a milk truck in Taradale around the time of the horse and cart deliveries and then converted to a saw bench. At that time the motor was turned ninety degrees. One of our members recognised the original owners name and can head Paul to the son of the original owner so Paul should be able to gain more information and history of the September 2020
vehicle. The vehicle is at the rolling chassis, motor and gearbox stage. Paul is working on the restoration as a three year project so we look forward to watching the project progress. From Paul’s we drove to Bay View to visit Richard Anderson’s shed to catch up on Richard’s restoration / re builds. Richard has been working on a 1930 Talbot A070 for several years and is an ongoing work in progress. There were 60 of these built. These vehicles had Darracq body work, most were exported and there are three known to be in New Zealand. Richard’s latest project is a 1947 Lea Francis 14 hp sports special. There are five of these known to be in New Zealand. Both of these vehicles are a huge undertaking as Richard is having to make most of the body work himself. From Bay View we made our way to Graeme and Esther Smith’s for afternoon tea and to see their collection of cars, a 1955 Humber Super Snipe, 1961 Humber Super Snipe, a very interesting 1973 Renault due to numerous seating configurations, a 1929 Chevrolet Tourer and Graeme’s restoration of a 1935 Humber Super Snipe. The 1935 Humber is certainly looking good and fairly close to being completed, right down to the chroming of the small parts that were all chromed originally. Hopefully we will see it completed for Deco 2021. Many thanks to the four members who allowed the club to visit their sheds. - Trevor Charman.

SPARES NEWS// By John Dury Hi All I have been asked by the new chairman Steve Donovan to produce an article for The Mag and report on the Tuesday morning gatherings, Unfortunately there was only 2 days before this report was to be in so there is not a lot to report for September Mag. We had a good turnout of between 25 & 30 people attending Tuesday morning but we would like more. Tuesday mornings is when the spare parts is open & we have a good crew looking after this under the leadership of Brian Taylor. At present we have more stock than room so we are trying to double up on our space. The library had some spare wooden boxes which we have adapted to use to sort the different grades of bolts & nuts so they are easier to find. We have a good array of BSF so if any British car owner needs some, we have good stocks. See images on the right of Ian Workman & Kevin Cains in the Spare Parts room. Until next months report.

Taupo and beyond. SAFARI 2020 23rd, 25th, 25th, 26th, October 2020. Safari this year will be based in Taupo. We have pencilled a motel large enough to accommodate us all for the nights of, 23rd, 24th, 25th, of October 2020. As the drive to Taupo is not a very long run, the Saturday run will be of an equivalent distance. Sunday will be mainly a short radius of Taupo. At this stage we have evening meals organised for the Saturday and Sunday nights. This year we have to pay in advance, [one payment] and will have to pay for the number of persons that we book for, therefore there will be no refunds if you change your mind at the last minute.
