CHAIRMAN’S REPORT// By Steve Donovan
Another month has just about gone by and we are now in Covid Level 1 in Hawke’s Bay. Long may it last? But as a Club we should not be letting our guard down and keep up our register and making sure we use the sanitizer. This week we received the sad news that Robert Duncan from Wanaka has passed away after courageous 15 month battle with cancer. Robert and his family have been great supporters of our Art Deco Events and has encouraged many other South Islanders to attend. He was also an owner of the Wings and Wheels Museum at Wanaka Airport. Robert built up a very successful Civil Contracting company in Wanaka and the surrounding area. He enjoyed restoring cars and always had time to chat and showed an interest in the people around him. He will be missed by all car people and his friends around the world. There has been some chat on face book with people lamenting the fact there are less and less vintage cars on outings and more so called moderns. I agree with these comments but it is a fact of life that members are turning to 1960s model cars

to drive. They are more able to keep up with traffic on our disgusting roads For us to survive we need bums on seats and people who are interested in cars. Our outings are an opportunity for members to catch up for a chat. As a person who organizes runs I would sooner have 30 cars from all ages than just a couple of old models. Overall we do not do too badly in getting out and about to our various activities. In a month we would have approx 260 participants Something that needs to improve and that is members willing to write outing reports for the Mag. It is embarrassing for the run organizer when all they get is blank looks when they ask for help. Remember it is your Club and it needs your help from time to time. That’s it for me. Like many of our members we are going to the South Island and it a shame the Canterbury Swap Meet is not on, but maybe some happy wives. Just heard today that Early Ford Club South Island Branch is having a swap meet and Manfield is sill on.
CLUB CAPTAIN// By Trevor Charman
The September club night was an exceptionally good night, but sadly only 35 members turned up which was disappointing. The guest speaker was Janine Howard from Howard and Gannon funeral directors in Taradale. Janine’s speech was very well presented, very interesting and most informative and very light hearted. Janine covered how and why she became involved in the funeral business from the age of seventeen to the present day. She covered burials, cremation, laws, coffins, planning, to the stage that anything goes these days, to suit the wishes of the deceased and the family. Janine put a lot of emphasis on the need to pre plan, the need to talk and discuss with your elders, family, executor’s, your wishes or their wishes prior to the event, and write it down, even to the stage of choice of music or hymns. There is a lot of legal information also required before the funeral directors can start to prepare a funeral, such as burial / cremation, pre-paid, parent names, maiden names, etc. Any information recorded can make organising a funeral easier and less stressful. All funeral services have information packs with the questions of all information required. These packs can be returned to the funeral directors of your choice, or else make sure that someone else knows where you have stored or filed the information. I would be most surprised if any members
went home from the meeting without an information pack to study or complete. If you missed the meeting you missed a most informative night. Many thanks to Janine Howard for coming along and speaking to us. The club’s run for September was to Trelinnoe Park, at Te Pohue, with 20 cars and 45 adults attended. It was a great day and the weather could have not been better, sunny, warm and not a breath of wind, a great day for looking at the 30 acre garden and for just sitting in the sun and talking. This is what numerous people chose to do after lunch rather than return to the gardens. There was no rush and the last cars left Trelinnoe about 3.00pm. Thanks to Marion Crocker for writing a report on the run. There will be a guest speaker for the October meeting, a club member, Alastair Chalmers. The October run will be to a private property to meet with members of the NZ Military Vehicle Club of HB. Details elsewhere in the magazine. As per the club rules. No dogs permitted.

SEPTEMBER MID WEEK RUN// Juliette Cadwallader
19 cars gathered at the clubrooms on a glorious sunny day before heading south. 19 cars! A large number for a mid week run – must be the magic word “RESTORATION” that drew them in! Was great to see so many cars, two more joining us en route so please, we look forward to seeing you all out and about on future runs. We headed south down through Raukawa, passing Argyll School and crossing SH50 onto Makaroro Road for approx 17 ks before arriving at C.A.R.S. This translates to “Classic And Restoration Services” the business of Chris and Christine Calder. Well mainly Chris I suspect as Christine has many other interests. Will get to them later. First we passed a shed with 8 cars stored, all of the older vintage. 8 Escorts, 2 Humber Sunbeams and 2 Toyotas – but wait there’s more !! Firstly we were treated to a brilliant, albeit brief display by “Percy” the albino peacock. Unfortunately he lost his partner recently so they are on the lookout for a lady peacock of the same colouring. Then the MAIN shed which really got the blokes attention. 5 cars under covers, 3 others in various stages of restoration including a Cobra. When Chris fired that up it really got one’s attention. Luckily they have no near neighbours! Chris explained the workings of a very clever machine he has which among other tricks can turn metal etc to look like woodgrain, wood to make look like a Formica bench top and wheels to look like Kevlar. The machine uses a water transfer system. The pattern is attached and the covering film eventually disappears. October 2020
While Chris held the mens attention Christine showed the ladies, what I suspect is mainly her domain, which included 4 Alpacas (one brown), horses both full size and miniatures, I counted 3 schnausers running about, bantams, “Cookie” the Cockatoo and which must be is her main love, “Burmese” cats of which she breeds. There were Mums waiting for their babies, others were happy to be patted and cages/ runs with many others, watching us curiously. She did say at one stage she had to feed a kitten hourly for several days!! Christine also told us that during lock down she had a huge number of people wanting to buy her lovely cats. It will take her quite some time to fulfil the orders. If I have missed some animals my apologies. By this time (lunch time) the weather had turned decidedly colder with light rain starting to fall. This hurried the departure of many as it was not pleasant under the trees which did provide cover for a time until it got heavier. We had the choice of going back the way we had come or following on the same road to cross over the river and travel down the opposite side of the river onto Wakarara Road before joining highway 50 and heading home in the rain. A big thank you to both Chris and Christine for making us welcome and showing us your many interests. Thanks also to Bob and Trixie for organising a very interesting run. If I have missed or got some mechanical terminology wrong again my apologies as I am but a mere woman!!

Club Captain’s Run. Sunday 18th October 2020. We will be meeting with members of the NZ Military Vehicle Club. HB, Branch. Assemble at the HBVCC club rooms. 67 Sandy Road Meeanee. At 1.00pm for a 1.15 pm departure. This is a short afternoon run, but bring your afternoon tea. The run is 32 kms each way from Napier, 30 – 35 minutes. Hastings members could meet us at the Roys Hill Reserve SH 50 at 1.30 pm ish. SH 50 is a busy road so I suggest that the Napier group do not stop. TRELINNOE PARK// By Marion Crocker
This was a run I had been looking forward to. We had never visited Trelinnoe Gardens, although we had heard about them, and had seen the signs when we drove the Napier – Taupo Road. So it was with pleasurable anticipation we joined the twenty or so diverse cars, their equally classic and diverse drivers, navigators, and passengers to set off on our trip to Trelinnoe Garden Park. Cars fuelled, picnic baskets packed, and sun shining, we gathered at the club rooms for instructions, and set of on our days adventure. The chosen route led through the countryside of Puketapu, toward Puketititri and down Glengarry Road to the Napier – Taupo Road and eventually the gardens. The instructions were clear and apart from a slightly dodgy, not quite “hard left” turn onto Glengarry Road – we know your lips are sealed Kevin - all went well. There is something magical about driving through countryside at this time of the year; the air is so fresh and the colours so vivid. The drive set up great expectations for the destination at Trelinnoe. We were not disappointed with the experience of our first visit to Trelinnoe. We were aware that the gardens have been closed for some time and the new owner, Michael Midgley, has only owned the property for about a year. However the gardens still looked magnificent, and well maintained. These gardens are not only well known locally but are of international significance, having one of the largest collections of October 2020
Magnolia in the world. Many of those trees were showing off their glorious blooms as we toured the garden with our host Michael. He is very aware of the history of his own little slice of Hawke’s Bay paradise, although he commented that had he been aware prior to purchasing the property that it was close to the epicentre of the 1931 earthquake, he may have had second thoughts. A consequence of that event is the undulating nature of the land and the steep gullies around the perimeter of the developed 13 hectare garden. The garden had been developed over some 60 years by John and Fiona Willis. Great gardeners are not only knowledgeable about the plants they grow, and constant seekers of new and interesting plants, but they have an artists eye for landscape and the way that plants enhance, and are enhanced by, careful placement within that landscape. This garden shows of the skills of such gardeners – as well as access to some probably quite serious earth moving machinery to create wide paths, attractive large lawn areas, a number of lakes, and look outs with great views to the surrounding countryside. Michael led us up the garden paths and shared his knowledge of, and plans for the garden. As with all such gardens there is always the promise of things to come, and I certainly will be watching his website for information about the flowering of the Himalayan lilies, Cardiocrinum giganteum in early summer. These giant scented lilies flower only once in their lifetime, but
appear to have naturalised in parts of the garden so would be a magnificent sight, worth a visit. The garden tour over, we relaxed in the sun and enjoyed our well deserved picnic lunches. I got the feeling that following the walk, picnic chairs were even more comfortable than usual! After suitable time had passed, a small group of us wandered the paths of the other side of the garden, enjoying the opportunity to benefit from the hard work and toil of others. We viewed the Labyrinth and the Vale of Xanadu. No sign of stately pleasure domes however, so it was upward and onward, back to our cars and the run home. A memorable Captains Run enhanced by the lovely day, and the company of our fellow travellers. Thanks Trevor and Lynn for organising the weather, and the trip for us.

SPARES NEWS// By John Dury Hi All Good to see the numbers for the Tuesday morning group turnout increasing, so a good chance to catch up and see what array of goodies can be obtained from the spares department. Last week (7/9/20) I put some Cortina tail lights on a facebook page, we had quite a few people interested but we only needed one and he drove down from Auckland to purchase them all. We also still have the Jaguar gearbook that I put on facebook but didn’t sell, photo attached, so if you know of anyone who wants one please advise.

We have got this now running and just need a couple of belts, the Chairman has volunteered to get these, once this is done we are hoping to get a demonstration on how it works and will be available for members to use, all in all a good asset for the club. About a month ago I had a ring from a past member Stu Billings offering me a Valve refacing machine he used to use in his business. He told me he didn’t really have any use for it plus he wouldn’t be able to lift it and that he would check that the VCC may be interested to take it off his hands. After discussions with Brian (BT) we decided it would be a good idea to get for the club, so off we went to get it and when we got it back to the club rooms found a lot of burnt wires and the motor was burnt out, tried to source another motor but couldn’t find anything that would fit, Brian had 2 at his place (as displays) which had no tooling so it was decided Brian would donate one

VINTAGE CAR WRECKS FROM THE GREAT MOTORING BOOM// The pictures were taken in and around Boston , Massachusetts by Leslie Jones, who was staff photographer at the Boston-Herald Traveller newspaper from 1917 to 1956. When he died in 1967, his family donated a vast collection of 34,000 prints to the Boston Public Library. They included these fascinating photos of vintage car wrecks from the great motoring boom. Motor cars became affordable to the masses for the first time in the 1920s. By the end of the decade a Model T Ford cost $300, just a fraction of the $1,200 it cost in 1909. By 1929, 20 per cent of Americans were on the road. Ford, Chrysler and General Motors were all competing for the boom in business and by the time the depression hit in 1929, Ford was producing more than one car every minute. Technology meant these early cars were capable of achieving speeds of up to 50 miles per hour - but safety measures were nowhere near as advanced as they are today. Add the fact that drivers didn't need to pass a test before they got behind the wheel, and it's easy to see why accidents were frequent and often spectacular.
