CHAIRMAN’S REPORT// By Ian Elmsly
Welcome to the November MAG and while we have only been reopen for the past month it seems like we have had a busy few weeks. It all started with the extra Run put together by Club Captain Paul Anderson taking us up around the Taihape Rd area, and despite the threat of rain we had some 22 cars turned out (including some newer members which was great to see), followed by Club Night. We were very fortunate to score an interesting speaker in Brent Rollinson giving us the insight into building a “race car” pretty much from scratch. Again a surprisingly good turnout of 40 odd (no pun intended!) members, and then of course the annual Safari to Wanganui. Despite the threat of Covid there were no cancellations, and a good weekend was chalked up (refer the report later in the MAG.) As at the time of writing we still have the Kitchen night scheduled so hence it seems like a busy few weeks!

Going forward, we have the Annual Homestead Run scheduled and I would refer you to the notices relating to this as we have had to make a few changes as a result of Covid, to the way we run this event and who may attend. The club night we hope you will find interesting and as we try to get some normality back into life we hope in some small way we get you engaged and interested and out of the house. There is of course the Vero Rally scheduled (fingers crossed) in January 22 and our very own Art Deco in Feb22 so lots on the horizon. So let’s see you at Club Night and hope you can enjoy the banter and friendship.
CLUB CAPTAIN’S REPORT// By Paul Anderson
THE CAPTAINS LOG……. We have just arrived back from the Safari Rally to Wanganui as I sit down to write these notes, and what a great weekend it was. We are indebted to Trevor and Lyn Charman who organised the weekend - everything arranged to the last detail and they always manage to find the most interesting sheds and venues to visit (more on this in the Safari Rally Report). We took our 1936 Chevy Coupe to Wanganui. Eighty five years young and the oldest car to do the complete trip (no skites here). We were returning home on the Monday - the car on the open road bowling along like a “Bondi Tram”, the weather magnificent, arm out the window, aircon on full (vent up) and Janine was talking incessantly, enjoying the fact that there was no radio to turn on to drown her out - when I had an epiphany. As the scenery sped by, I realised how lucky we are to drive these cars from another era. I almost got misty eyed - forgetting about the lack of power steering, ABS brakes and synchronised gearbox……….. Seriously I did think that all things considered, there was nothing much else that we would rather be doing on that day. MONTHLY RUN With the Club reopening after the easing of level 4 lockdown, it was felt the we needed to organise an event to get the cars out of the garage, as we had been starved of the ability to drive them and socialise. But there was still a great veil of uncertainty over how 7
events could be run, so it was decided to go for a pure country run, in this case on an unscheduled day due to the Safari rally later in the month. Twenty four cars assembled at Roosters Brewery, and we set of on a run of approximately 60 km through fully sealed country roads in the Crownthorpe area. We set off as tail end Charlie and I could not understand how the road was clear in front of us except for one car. This was explained when we came to a tee intersection and a good number of vehicles approached from entirely the wrong direction. I am assuming one car made a navigation error and the rest followed on instead of following the directions. These cars missed what I termed “the driver’s section” of the run. The day was beneficial to a couple of us who found deficiencies in our cars that required attention before the Safari Rally. It was a lovely drive through great countryside and the one small shower we encountered did not dampen the enthusiasm. A few cars stopped at the De La Terre Winery along the way, and I am told that despite the uncertainty of what covid restrictions were in place, most managed to find somewhere for refreshments.
HBVCC HOMESTEAD RUN SUNDAY 14th NOVEmBER 2021 This year the run is only open to VCC members and their immediate families Meet at the Hawke’s Bay Farmers’ Market off Kenilworth Road, Hastings ready for a 10am departure (Second entrance - look out for the VCC Sign) While you are at the market, stock up for your picnic lunch Allow extra time for your shopping as the Market is operating under the public health guidance surrounding safe health practice in relation to Covid-19 (So log your entry on the NZ Covid Tracer app or complete the manual contact register, wear masks and maintain social distancing)
We are visiting Maungakuri Station with an opportunity to visit the Station Chapel and also the nearby Kairakau and Maungakuri Beaches. The route is approx. 60 km’s (40 miles) to its furthest point, but you need to allow for a total distance of approx.120 kms (75mls) for the return trip to Hastings, there is no fuel on route. WEDNESDAY RUN// By Helen Ball
The day was overcast but we were eager to get out and about after missing the September Run due to covid restrictions. Ten cars set off on a 40 km country run organised by Graham Smith. Turning left out from the club rooms we continued straight ahead to get to Highway 51. Following back roads out of Clive we headed towards Haumoana. Here some, who shall remain nameless, struck a wee problem as several cars in front of us did not know their Te Awanga's from their Tuki Tuki's, and as we veered left into Haumoana, as instructed, we suddenly felt very alone!!! Doing a loop around the settlement we then drove back to Tuki Tuki Road following the river down to Waimarama Rd and turning right to cross

the bridge, followed the other side of the river back to Te Mata - Mangateretere Rd. The scenery is always stunning on this drive no mater what time of the year. Today, even though cloudy, was no exception. We continued to the home of John and Sharon Hayes for our lunch and a look around the "Big Red Shed" full of all sorts of memorabilia. John fired his Lister portable motor which in its day would have been used for shearing, milking, and saw milling. A quiz followed lunch just to keep us on our toes. Many thanks to Graham for a great run and to John and Sharon for opening their property for us.

SAFARI WHANGANUI 2021// By Mercia Paaymans
DR I V E I T BREAK IT FIX IT R E P E AT This report has been compiled by Mercia Paaymans and will self-destruct in oops sorry… focus! THE 2021 SAFARI… HIGHLIGHT OF MY YEAR! When I think of the word safari I think of Africa, big game, entertainment, exotic people and places and yes people we covered all of this, New Zealand styles! We all met up on Friday at Zinc café in Waipukurau for a welcoming hot drink and some top nosh. Trevor and Lyn welcomed us, gave us our formidable rally notes( which I might add were on point EVERWHERE WE WENT!!!) and we headed southish- travelling on new roads for many of us. So nice to get off SH2 and enjoy the verdant fields of green. The sunny weather continued as we passed the beautiful Woburn house and Oruawharo Homestead and headed through Dannevirke onto more rural roads and we wended our way up and over the Saddle Road to enjoy lunch at the Ashhurst domain. Best fuel economy was reported by the Rover 14 and 26 Buick. We then journeyed to Wanganui via Marton and masked and dangerous we checked into our accommodation. Saturday was another corker day and the safari ing continued. Firstly we covered the exotic people part- the Wanganui market 18

was a busy place, lots of local creative artists, cooks gardeners, it was relaxed and vibrant. Many of us indulged in the pastime of mooching and shopping. Next we headed down SH3 to Tom Cloustons property in Turakina. As we all assembled the unique letterbox whetted our appetite of things to come.
So much memorabilia collected by father and son, SO MUCH- hard to describe so overwhelming! Literally something for everyone…. SERIOUSLY it was impressive as well as this were a selection of cars from hot rods to vintage vehicles. So my pick of the vehicles was the 1906 Darracq called Lily dressed in red with brass highlights, she had a great story.
Purchased by Toms father in 1957 she was stripped down and stored in ammo boxes for 60 years, she was put together and it has all the original speedo, clock and windscreen. What a HONEY! 19
Lunch was at Paloma gardens which I am definitely going back to as the unique plants and creative plantings need a quiet half day to really enjoy. It is a spectacular privately owned Garden of National Significance. Continuing on we visited Bruce Ardells property and were able to see the commercial side of his parts business, all family run and not a computer in sight.
Bruce gave us an interesting talk about his history and made us very welcome. Again another extremely interesting shed to visit. We were lucky enough to view a part of his eclectic car collection. From fire engines, tractors to Skoda’s and Rolls Royce. Even a cannon! Trevor made the car pick from this shed -he liked the 1600 Cortina no particular reason, he just loved it
Dinner was – this is the entertainment part- was at Carolines Boat Shed Bar- it was a satisfying meal with great service and a big thumbs up for the Eaton Mess- a dessert beloved by all…. Ok some! Ok mainly me and Jo. Then later by Alistair, Jean, Kevin and Sandra! Sunday- a bit of drizzle actually it was raining quite hard and was cold! And then I lost my pen- what’s with this? It was here yesterday, did it grow legs? It required a deep dive (think Ghost in the Shell people) into the handbag … successfully located I was ready to scribe. We started at Hinemoa Boyds property viewing her and her late husband’s Ed Boyds collection- this is a work in progress a museum creation, the memorabilia and cars were interesting and created great discussion amongst us all. A highlight was the amazing car graphics that were up on the walls they added so much to displays as well as all the nooks that had surprises in them, telling us about the history of Wanganui. Hans car pick was the 1962 Bambina, it was a hot yellow and just made you smile. A wee climb up the hill and we viewed Ian Chamberlan’s vehicles and in particular a rebuild of a 1906 Arrol Johnson. He is one clever man!

The weather continued to close in as we travelled about 100 metres up the road and visited Richmond Harding’s collection of aviation memorabilia and aviation history. He regaled us with stories of his flying history and kindly supplied us with a welcoming hot drink and biscuits. The most poignant display I viewed was the topdressing tribute to all the pilots who had lost their lives during top dressing and related accidents, it was sobering to read so many of these men died in this industry. So I approached Malcolm, whose pick was the Spitfire, as he has always wanted a ride in one of these British planes.
Our final shed was Ian and Frances Higgins property which hid a collection of iconic speed machines!.Paul gave a great introduction and we drooled over this collection- definitely a fast and furious selection. Pauls pick was the 1968 Chrysler 300 Red soft top- it was immaculate, you could eat off the motor!
Lunch divided us, some went to the Bason Botanic Gardens, others to the Wanganui VCC rooms. Ian Higgins kindly opened up for us and we even got into the parts shed! The final meal was at The Wanganui RSA for a great meal and prize giving. We were joined by Bruce and Jenny Ardell and Ian Higgins which added to the enjoyment. We have been encouraged to get involved in the annual Burma Rally in January 2022. On behalf of everyone I want to thank Trevor and Lyn Charman on a fantastic job, everytime I go on these safaris I find new places I want to re visit and explore. I think we can tick all the boxes exotic people tick and places/ collections tick, big game, big cars tick, Africa/ Wanganui closeish tick. Thanks to everyone for getting on board and getting out there, if you didn’t go …..come along next time!

This month we have had a couple of members shifting house and moving into retirement villages, this has prompted them to clean out there garages and we have been treated to some vintage treasures, thanks goes to Fred Payne & Kevin Haywood. I'm sure someone will fine something of interest. Also thanks to Steve Donovan & Hooters for the trailer load of Whippet parts left over from a sale, parts include blocks, guards, and wheels. Fred Payne has also given a collecting of Beaded Wheels from previous years, which will be available for members if they are interested. The write up of Nigel Browns restoration was left out last month, and is on the following page this month. Until next time.

Restoration of 1946 MG TC 1510 Nigel Brown
Car purchased 22 February 2017 (after 44 years waiting to be restored on a farm at Waitahora outside Dannevirke) MANUFACTURED: 2 October 1946 IMPORTED INTO NZ: 4 July 1962 PREVIOUS OWNERS: Four LAST REGISTERED: 1973-74 The MG TC first appeared in 1945 and was really a revamped version of the pre-war MG TA/TB models. The TC had classic 1930's MG styling which was exactly what MG buyers were looking for, particularly car-hungry ex-American service men. The TC's classic looks and simple yet effective mechanical’s helped this small sports car to sell in important export markets. Despite the fact that many TC's were exported only RHD versions were available. The cars specification was the normal basic MG package consisting of 19" wire wheels, 23
a fold flat windscreen, cut-away doors, separate wings and petrol tank. The cars "nippy" performance can be best described as leisurely by today's standards, power came from an overhead valve engine of 1250cc I completely disassembled the car, the chassis and other relevant parts were sand blasted and painted. It was not until the car was disassembled that I realised what I had purchased and what a large restoration was going to be required to put it back to the original specs. A full and ever expanding list was made up of the parts required, with a small amount purchased from vendors in NZ but mostly from English vendors. Parts of the wooden body frames and metal panels were rotten or rusted beyond repair so new parts were purchased.
The clubs parts store and team have provided lots of guidance and parts for the car which has helped me tremendously on my very first restoration project.
car was put back together and upholstered, put through the re-registration process and issued with a VIN, WOF and new plates 22 December 2020.
The engine needed a full rebore and sleeved back to the original piston size with the twin SU carburettors refurbished, with worn parts replaced. Gearbox and differential were OK luckily. Anything else that had previously moved (i.e. brakes, cables, bearings) was seized, therefore requiring refurbishment or replacement. Most of the shiny parts were re-chromed. Five new 19inch spoked wheels with new tyres completed the shiny side of the car.
The car will have a new hood and side curtains made and fitted by early June 2020 and then I will be able to go out on the club runs.

What have I learnt from this restoration project? – heaps, so much, I am looking for another car to restore and to use the knowledge I have gained. Some would say I am a slow learner.
