CHAIRMAN’S REPORT// By Ian Elmsly

Welcome to the May edition of the MAG and welcome to winter!! After what seems to have been a warm summer it seems as if daylight saving finished and the cold rocked in. Might be a good time to look at buying an open car from someone who suddenly finds it too cold!! The past month seems to have been relatively quiet on the car front with our monthly meeting having only 32 members in attendance, with those there tested on their knowledge and reading skills from the latest Beaded Wheels, thanks to an impromptu quiz from the Club Captain. Yours truly was missing from the Waimarama Wander run but from all accounts the numbers rallied at the last minute and the run and dinner went ahead as planned.

As we move on into the year, you will all be aware that our AGM will be held in June, with notices of the meeting appearing in this edition of the MAG, along with nomination forms for those who wish to get more involved in the running of the Club. This is your chance to put yourself forward and get into the thick of things and volunteers are an essential part of any club. We are no different to any other club, with largely the same issues around membership and volunteers experienced across most clubs. As Chairman I would encourage you to think about what you can offer your Club and just maybe you can bring some fresh ideas or direction as we look to keep the club moving into the future. Don’t be shy! In the meantime, your committee have a number of meetings and runs organised over the next few months so please ensure they are well supported. That’s all from me. Happy motoring.

CLUB CAPTAIN// By Esther Smith

Our April run was held on Sunday the 13th of April, the run was an original concept and a lot of fun. I learnt a new skill which was how to play Skee with the set that Paul Coe had made and bought along, I played Boules with Brian Taylor’s grandson Nelson. The aftermatch was at Pipi’s in Havelock North, yummy Pzza’s so a great day all round thanks to Malcolm and Lesley Blair for organising the day. The run was won by Brian Taylor and his three grandchildren, with Steve and Pam Donovan second. Our next club run is to Neil Hammond’s up Puketitiri Road. Details elsewhere in the MAG. Note the date is Sunday the 19th of May, we have moved the date by one week to avoid clashing with Mothers Day Future events in the planning stage are the Lady Drivers Run in June, Winter Art Deco in July. National VCC Day in August and somewhere in that I would like to fit in a Restoration Run/Shed Raid. For the latter event if we can visit your place or you know of any garages /restorations that we could visit let me know.

Our annual Safari this year is to Gisborne, it is been organised by Lesley and Malcolm Blair in conjunction with the Gisborne Branch, Eastern Bay of Plenty have also been invited. Entry forms will be out in a couple of months. The dates are the 25th28th October, so put those in your calendar now. There is a lot to do and see on the East Coast, I have quite a lot to do with the area as part of my work, as there are new horticulture developments happening plus buildings that require strengthening. There are lots of other car events happening in Hawkes Bay and around the country, local non VCC events are the Hot Rod Festival on Sunday the 5th of May and Targa coming to Havelock North on the weekend of the 18/19th May. For this run we are going to Neil and Jill Hammond’s home in Puketitiri Road Meet at the Anderson Park carpark off Auckland Road, ready for a 1.30pm departure: What to bring: 1. Bring a pen and clip board, we can’t make it too easy, you have to earn your afternoon tea 2. A contribution for a shared afternoon tea we will provide hot water, tea, coffee etc. 3. Something to sit on. 4. The distance is approx. 30km’s each way Neil and Jill some interesting vehicles and it’s a lovely spot, so this will be a good day out.

WAIMARAMA WANDERER CLUB RUN// We met at the Rose and Shamrock car park for a 2pm start. We even had Brian Taylor and his 3 grandchildren. (Who said he was a grumpy Granddad. )

With the grandchildren and Branch Members friends joining in, it was a very pleasant hour. At approx. 5pm we packed up and went to Havelock north.

10 Cars left the car park where we were handed a route sheet and a page of pictures which we were to identify as we followed the instructions.

Our next meeting place was the Pipi Restaurant where we all enjoyed an excellent meal of various Pizza and drinks.

It took us around Havelock north and out past Te Mata Peak and onto Waimarama road with the option of stopping for a coffee. At Maraetotara road we all visited the falls so as to identify some of the picture clues. From there the route took us to Waimarama Beach. It was time for afternoon tea. After our refreshments Lesley and Malcolm had arranged for us to play games. So rugged up for the cold we played Petanque, Cricket and a game of Skee that were made by Paul Coe (looked too complicated for me).

The weather was cold but it did not rain which was great. It is pleasing to see a number of guests on this outing and having the very well behaved children with us. First prize for the quiz went to Brian Taylors Grandchildren and runner up to Jo Hayes and Steve Trott. Thanks to Lesley and Malcolm for a pleasant afternoon outing. Regards. Pam and Steve Donovan.

TERROR IN THE GORGE// Ever driven in an earthquake? Here’s how it feels. Devastation, death, and terror struck at the Central Buller area of New Zealand on the morning of Monday, 17th June 1929, when the disastrous upheaval known as the Murchison earthquake brought lofty mountains crashing onto homesteads in the valleys, blocked rivers, tore gaping holes in roadways, and carried away bridges, cutting all communications between Nelson and the West Coast and isolating a vast area. Accompanied by terrifying roarings and thunderous rumblings deep in the earth, the earthquake thrust a tract of land ten miles long sixteen feet above its previous level, and for days, while rain poured down, the earth rocked and muttered. At its height, people were not able to keep their feet while buildings were cast from their foundations. Where mountain-sides slid into valleys, lakes formed as the rivers and streams dammed, adding a further fear to the minds of an already stunned people. Eleven persons lost their lives most of them buried deep under displaced hillsides. At eight o’clock that morning Dick Powley had left Westport driving a brand new Newman Car, with three passengers for Nelson – two men and a young woman from Wellington. Powley had been driving for Newman’s for ten years, and had marked up an excellent reord for punctuality and reliability. He was proud of his new car and seemed well for a fair run through to Nelson. The road was in good condition, the weather was clear after a frosty morning. Inangahua Junction was May 2019

reached on schedule; the day continued bright and there was not a breath of wind. Deep in the Buller Gorge there was a profound hush; even the far –reaching voices of the Buller and Inangahau Rivers, joining at the point for the last turbulent rush to the sea, was subdued. Above the peaks, towards Murchison, there were banks of heavy fog, but that was usual at that time of the year, and by eleven o’clock the sun would probably break through, as it had on countless other days. With his three passengers, Powley set off on the next stage of his Journey, which was to take him to Lyell. Two miles below the road crosses the Buller River where the sturdy Iron Bridge spans the deep gorge. On his right the gorge opened out in a great arc that swung to his left before rounding Murderer’s Point, opposite Lyell. On his left a frowning precipice of rock rose above the northern end of the bridge. Beyond the road ran across half a mile of nearly flat country two hundred yards wide, the only level ground between the bridge and Murchison. Rising from the landward side of this area beetling cliffs of rock stood sheer several hundred feet high. Seconds only separated Powley’s leaving the bridge and the crash of the earthquake. The first indication that there was anything wrong was the car leapt suddenly to one side. Powley fought the sideways swipe, the vehicle continuing to bounce in a strange manner as the roadway ahead appeared to rise several feet, rock from side to side and then subside, jolting. Powley slapped on his brakes and he and his passengers realized what was happening. It was obvious that this was a quake on a major

scale. Explosions in the bowels of the earth emitted fearful rumblings. Trees threshed furiously, many trunks snapping with the movement. The very mountain tops seemed to lean out over the gorge. From the rock faces above and the immense masses of stone fell, hurtling across the intervening bush covered land, taking the roadway in giant leaps and catapulting into the Buller below. In a flash the occupants were out of the car, but so violent was the earth movement that they could not stand up without clutching at the vehicle or at shrubs on the side of the road. Heralded by a nerve-shattering crunching sound, a crack appeared in the road a few yards in front of the car and in subsequent tremors over the next few minutes the crack widened to seven or eight feet, extending across the full width of the road. It was the kind of thing few people have seen and lived to tell about. Behind them huge rocks littered the highway, and with the gaping fissure ahead passengers and driver were trapped. From the heights vast boulders continued to fall. At any moment one of these might smash down on them. To make their case more difficult, rain started to fall, increasing steadily in volume. It was 10.20am when the earthquake occurred and it was midday before Powley and his three charges were able to leave the spot. In all that time the earth had heaved and groaned, but the passengers behaved well, the men admiring the plucky self-possession of their young woman companion who, after the first shock, proved her mettle.

A quick survey revealed that there was no way of moving the car. What lay ahead or behind, none of them could guess, but I it would be foolhardy to clamber around the gap in the road and walk toward Lyell. That would take them into the deep valleys around the tiny settlement. Behind them was more open country, so it was agreed to walk back the way they had come, if the Iron Bridge was still standing. They clawed their way over jagged rock debris to reach the bridge, which they were overjoyed to find was still intact to all appearances. Its northern end had moved along the massive concrete pylon on which it rested, shearing the heads off the immense bolts that had held it in position. Fearfully they ventured out on the structure which was their only means of escape to uncertain safety, and though it bucked and swayed they scurried across, shepherded by Powley. They were thankful to reach solid ground on the far side, even if it proved to be very infirm ground, for it still heaved alarmingly. High clay banks on their left had deposited thousands of tons of spoil over the road and this the rain was rapidly turning into a cloying mass that shivered into ever-widening pools. Through these and over the wet clay they made their way, slipping falling, covered with yellow mud, wet to the skin, all the time wondering what the scenes of further disaster were to meet their gaze as they moved toward the outside world. It took them more than six hours to reach the nearest house, which was only a mile from where they had left their car

HOOTERS// Ana @ Hooters Hi Folks, Well that’s it for another successful cruise ship season and it’s been the biggest yet. The team have really hit it off and we have a great selection of characters that come together to form the Hooters crew and that has made this season an utter Hoot! Sadly it’s time for the season to end, Phil and myself have headed to bonnie Scotland for a friends wedding and left David to hold the fort for a few weeks. From what I hear, David & the team are rocking it in our absence with our regular multi-car convoys and daily tours running like clockwork. Monte the vintage bus has now finished doing daily tours for the season which definitely symbolises winter is on the way. Over winter the team will still be busy with Steve D working on the cars and getting them ready for next season, David finishing all the jobs on the new shed and getting it up to scratch. Whilst we work on renewing and reviving our tour and event offerings along with our advertising, marketing and social media. All of which is done in-house by the

team. Certainly a quieter time of the year bookings wise but no rest for the wicked, there is always plenty to do at the Hooters headquarters. When we return it’s time to train up the new drivers, some of which we simply haven’t had time to train during this crazy summer so we look forward to them joining us next season. We do still need more part time drivers so if you enjoy driving vintage, love Napier and have a passion for people then do pop in and have a chat with us. Now is the perfect time to join the team! The costume department is looking great and we have had lots of donations but we do still need items, So if you have any unwanted art deco bits and bobs then please do drop them in so we can make sure they get fixed up and used and enjoyed regularly. Now it’s time to look forward to next season and how we can again improve on our customer service and keep those rave reviews rolling in but for now I’m off to enjoy the bonnie Isle of Skye.
